Abstract Gymnophalloides seoi (Digenea: Gymnophallidae), a new human intestinal trematode reported from a Korean woman who complained of epigastric discomfort, has been shown to be highly prevalent among the villagers of a southwestern island of the Republic of Korea. For the detection of human infections, fecal examinations were conducted on the inhabitants of a seashore village, where the first patient with a G. seoi infection had resided. Of 98 inhabitants examined, 70 (71.4%) were infected with various intestinal parasites; among them, G. seoi showed the highest rate of egg positivity 48 of 98 (49.0%). Individual worm burdens of G. seoi, as measured by collection of adult flukes after anthelmintic treatment and purgation, ranged from 106 to 26,373 specimens (average per infected case = 3,326). There was no sex-related difference in the prevalence of G. seoi, and the age distribution of the infected cases showed a relatively even pattern. This study confirms that human infection by G. seoi is not an

Nearly every species on the planet has at least one parasite, which, by definition, incurs a cost in the host. Therefore, organisms must resist parasites - preventing or reducing infections - or tolerate parasites - reducing the costs of infection - in order to maintain their fitness despite the presence of parasites. Here, I investigated: 1) whether parasitic, larval trematodes (cercariae) can detect the least resistant tadpole host species, 2) a hypothetical framework for how host life history impacts the utilization of inflammation and thus, resistance and tolerance, 3) whether a common anesthesia technique used in experimental infections immunocompromises tadpoles, 4) the relationship between tadpole host life history, tolerance, and behavioral resistance to cercarial infection, 5) how tadpole behavior affects trematode infection location, and 6) how host life history impacts trematode infection location and the implications of this for host tolerance. In the first chapter, I investigated whether

Clinostomum marginatum is a species of parasitic flukes (class Trematoda). It is commonly called the yellow grub. It is found in many freshwater fish in North America, and no fish, so far is immune to this parasite. This type of fluke can be found in the mouth of aquatic birds such as herons and egrets. They are also found commonly in the esophagus of fish-eating birds, and reptiles. Eggs of these trematodes are shed in the feces, hopefully into the water. Many aquatic birds become infected by ingesting freshwater fish that are infected. The metacercariae are found right beneath the skin or in the muscles. Life cycle of this yellow grub consists of two intermediate hosts and one definitive host. The parasites eggs hatch in the water and the miracidium invades the foot of the snails. The cercaria leaves the snail and encysts in the muscle of the connective tissue of fresh-water species. The metacercarial stage is that is formed is then referred to as the yellow grub. The encysted ...

How many kind of food can you name comes with its own side dish? Well, the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) should be on that list. This week. weve already seen how a trematode infection can improve the taste of oysters, but it seems that oyster also comes with another gastronomic treat in the form of the pea crab Zaops ostreum. Pea crabs (family Pinnotheridae) are small soft bodied crabs which live inside a variety of marine invertebrates, with most species living in bivalves. Zaops ostreum infect the oyster as a tiny first stage larvae, and grow to maturity within the bivalves mantle cavity, feeding upon food-laden mucus strings produced by its hosts filtering action. It is a true parasite in that it causes harm to its host. Not only does it steal food from the oyster, it also forms an obstruction within the body cavity and erode the gill tissue. From a culinary perspective, there are many serving suggestions available for pea crabs - they can be served raw, deep fried, or sautéed, ...
Fascioliasis belongs to the group of foodborne trematode infections and is a zoonosis, meaning an animal infection that may be transmitted to humans.
G. salaris was first described in 1952,[8] after being removed from a Baltic strain[2] of Atlantic salmon kept at the Hölle Laboratory in Sweden, near to the river Indalsälv.[8] At the time, it was not thought to cause disease in the host fish.[8] The presence of G. salaris on fish became a World Organisation for Animal Health notifiable disease in 1983.[8] Catastrophic losses of Atlantic salmon occurred in Norway in the 1970s following the introduction of G. salaris. By 2001, the salmon populations of 41 Norwegian rivers had been virtually wiped out in this way.[4] Historically, Gyrodactylus-infected rivers have been treated with the indiscriminate pesticide/piscicide rotenone. A newer method of treatment employs dosing small volumes of aqueous aluminium and sulfuric acid into the river. A huge advantage of this method is its ability to kill the parasites without harming the hosts. This new method has shown promising results in Batnfjordelva and Lærdalselva, two rivers in Norway.[citation ...
We analyzed 601 ethanol-fixed B. austriaca individuals obtained on 16-Nov-2013 at two sites located within the same stream separated by 700 m and differing in altitude by 70 m a.s.l. The specimens were lysed and subjected to DNA isolation and subsequent CF700 PCR-based diagnostics. Amplification of 23 specimens (3.8%) resulted in a PCR product of the expected size. The prevalence of CF700-positive specimens was similar at both sampling sites (15/387 and 10/214).. We next dissected 1320 freshly collected B. austriaca individuals obtained in parallel on 16-Nov-2013 at the same two sampling sites described above. The total prevalence of morphologically identified trematodes differed strongly between these sites. Only 24 (4.2%) of the 576 B. austriaca individuals examined were positive for trematodes at the lower sampling site. In contrast, 126 (16.9%) of 744 B. austriaca individuals from the upper sampling site were positive for trematodes (OR 0.21, 95% CI 0.13 - 0.33, z = 6.71, p , 0.01). However, ...

While A. contortum seems to do quite well in its rather unusual (for a trematode) habitat, the basic body plan for trematode is that of an internal parasite. So how does one modify a body plan for living inside the cosy confine of a hosts body to a life clinging on to the more exposed parts of the host? Fortunately for A. contortum there are some functional overlaps between living in a fishs intestine versus living on its gills. While it lacks the hooks and sucker clamps of monogenean flatworms which are specialised for ectoparasitism, A. contortum has co-opted its large and muscular ventral sucker for hanging on to the sunfishs gills. Other trematode species use their ventral sucker to attach to the intestinal wall. In A. contortum it also function as the main attachment organ, but on a different part of the hosts body. Additionally, this flukes hind body appears to be long and prehensile, which it might to able to use to grip like a chameleons tail (to a limited degree ...
In the first part of a national survey of gyrodactylid parasites, with special reference to Gyrodactylus salaris, funded by French administrations, two water basins harbouring Atlantic salmon were sampled: Brittany (7 rivers and 3 restocking farms) and the Adour basin in the Western Pyrenees (6 rivers and 1 restocking farm). 535 salmonids were collected and examined for G. salaris and other gyrodactylid species investigations. Identification procedure was performed by morphological examination and molecular analysis. Both methods led to the same conclusions with a high degree of consistency: Gyrodactylus salaris is declared absent from the examined samples and, therefore, can be considered absent from the sampled water basins with a very high level of confidence (over 99.4 %). A new species named Gyrodactylus teuchis was identified first by morphological examination and confirmed by molecular analysis. This result has been confirmed by an independent study performed in the same time (CUNNINGHAM ...

Gilles Mongeau has written an illuminating book with many enjoyable insights. This is no small praise for a book that adds to the innumerable discussions of the structure and aims of Thomas Aquinass Summa theologiae. According to the introduction, Mongeaus work draws upon various streams of Thomistic and medieval studies: Thomas Hibbss attention to dialectic and narrative in the Summa contra Gentiles, Jean-Pierre Torrells treatment of the spiritual theology of the Summa theologiae, and Mary Carrutherss retrieval of the rhetorical shape of medieval and Dominican life. Mongeau thus offers a reading of the Summa theologiaeas rhetorically constructed to lead its reader into deeper conformity with the wisdom it seeks to communicate. [End Page 303]. He formulates the purpose of his work in his first chapter, A Wisdom that Makes One Holy. The theme of wisdom as transformative plays a central role in this book. Mongeau thus seeks to overcome some of the separations that have occurred in ...

For example, take todays parasite. For quite a few years, it was thought that the Acanthoparyphium found at Otago Harbour, South Island, New Zealand consisted of a single species. It infects the marine snail Zeacumantus subcarinatus as the first host, within which it undergoes asexual replication to produce free-living larvae call cercariae which then infect the New Zealand cockle Austrovenus stutchburyi (which also happens to be the second host for another trematode, Curtuteria australis - featured on January 15). However, during some routine investigation with molecular markers, it was serendipitously discovered that what was initially thought to be a single species of trematode actually turned out to be composed of at least four different species that are morphologically indistinguishable from each other (or at least very similar), but genetically distinct. At the moment, they are provisionally known as Acanthoparyphium species A, B, C, and D. While they all utilise the same species of snail ...

The one species that is of concern to fisheries and fish farms is Gyrodactylus salaris. This is the notifiable one which is naturally widespread in the rivers of Finland, Russia and eastern Sweden draining into the Baltic Sea and which has been identified as the cause of loss of whole populations of Atlantic salmon parr and smolts in western Sweden and Norway. Epidemics of the organism occurred when it was transferred to areas where it is not naturally found and salmon exposed to the parasite for the first time had no evolved immunity (unlike those fish in the Baltic rivers which appear to be tolerant). This resulted in heavy losses of the susceptible fish and populations of salmon have been eliminated from more than twenty Norwegian rivers with the probable inevitable loss of some strain characteristics of those populations ...
In addition to dealing with us ecosystem-altering and land-lusting apes, Florida panthers must also cope with other parasites - including highly specialized trematodes that have evolved a fancy for fare of the feline sort.... Trematodes are flukes of nature (sorry, couldnt resist) in that theyve evolved an astonishing, almost incomprehensible level of developmental plasticity. Most have evolved the ability to subtly manipulate their growth rates and sexual maturation to track the resources available in their environment. For parasitic nematodes, their environment is manifested by the internal chemistry of their victims. Id est, the digestive enzymes, hormones and antibodies expressed through the physiology of their hosts help the trematodes gauge the probability of reproductive success and to tune their own developmental process accordingly. This fantastic capacity for flexibility is of survival benefit because should a trematode happen to find itself immersed in the body of an unsuitable ...

The Red River is the fourth solo offering from Portland, Maines Micah Blue Smaldone and the first to be released on Chicago label Immune. Heres what Micah has to say about it: Rather than construct a thick frame of reference for this new album, Id prefer to describe simply where Ive come from in the past few years, and then let this music speak for itself. My first solo effort, 2003s Some Sweet Day, was a collection of ragtime and country-blues, a fervently authentic homage to great influences -- John Jackson, Blind Blake, Robert Wilkins, etc., who all helped me through some tough times. 2005s Hither and Thither was much more internal, an urgent telling of germination in a harsh climate. This new one reaches a little further both into the past and the future. The title is borrowed from Red River Blues, an old chestnut that goes which way, which way do that blood red river run? From my back window home to the rising sun. I suppose this is the big theme of the album - Never fight evil ...

Hello everyone. I recently delved into a recently acquired copy of Ricardo Iznaolas Summa Kitharologica and would like to know if any of you have read, or are reading, this book, and if so what youve taken away from it. Im still on the first chapter dealing with the anatomical aspects of classical guitar playing, but have looked ahead a bit to what the authors calls a Theory of Positional Framing pertaining to right hand technique: at once fascinating and, at first glance, bewildering. Also, does the text tie in directly with Kitharologus to any great extent, or is it more of a general survey of the authors approach to technique. To anyone who hasnt read the book, its an apparently intentionally dry, academic read (comparable to a long academic jouranl article in style and layout), but packed full of information that makes it entirely worthwhile (as least judging by what Ive read so far). It also comes with a well produced DVD that I have just barely skimmed through. Thanks to all in ...
