Three hundred-ninety presentations were evaluated, of which 215 (55%) were ultimately published in a peer-reviewed journal within five years of the presentation date. The mean time from presentation to publication was 16 months (SD 25 months). There was no significant difference in the distribution of the level of evidence between studies that were ultimately published, versus those that were not published (n.s.). The level of evidence of the published study was not a significant predictor of the impact factor of the journal in which it was published (n.s.). Presentations were most commonly published in Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy (24%) and The American Journal of Sports Medicine (22%).. CONCLUSIONS ...

The term Occult Pneumothorax (OPTX), describes a pneumothorax (PTX) that while not suspected on the basis of either clinical examination or plain radiograph, is ultimately detected with thoraco-abdominal computed tomograms (CT). This situation is increasingly common in contemporary trauma care with the increased use of CT. The incidence appears to approximately 5% in injured populations presenting to hospital, with CT revealing at least twice as many PTXs as suspected on plain radiographs. While PTXs are a common and treatable (through chest drainage) cause of mortality and morbidity, there is clinical equipoise and significant disagreement regarding the appropriate treatment of the OPTX. Based on level III evidence, some authors have recommended observation without chest drainage for all but the largest OPTXs, recommendations that contravene the standard dictum for ventilated patients as recommended by the Advanced Trauma Life Support Course of the American College of Surgeons. The ...

The Marina Baixa Veterinary Hospital has a regenerative medicine service, using growth factors and stem cells. The growth factors will allow a faster recovery of joint injuries such as osteochondritis, ligament and tendon injuries. They also accelerate the union of bone fractures, as well as certain chronic cutaneous ulcers. Stem cells are obtained simply from a small portion of the patients fat. This is sent to the laboratory and in 14-21 days it is ready for use. It is currently being used in patients with severe osteoarthritis and osteochondral lesions, but in the future it may be used in more serious conditions or injuries such as spinal cord injuries. It is a method with total safety since it is obtained from the patient himself. Example of regenerative medicine ...

The high-growth variant assumes: internationally harmonised policies with well functioning markets and rapidly expanding world trade; vigorous economic revival reminiscent of the period of rapidly growing prosperity from 1950 to 1973 (growth in National Income of 4% per annum). The modest-growth variant is generally considered the most realistic. The high-growth variant may be regarded as an exceptional one with less prospect of realization. e. economic stagnation (zero annual growth in National Income). For this purpose a written survey is a more efficient way of collating information than group discussions. The Delphi method is a way of sampling expert opinion by means of written questionnaires. e. e. the usage of two or more successive questionnaires, thereby giving participants the chance to modify their answers; a statistical summary of the group answers. Anonymity is deliberately preserved in order to counteract any undesirable influencing of other participants. The iteration and ...

Broken Foot Prognosis The outlook for a foot fracture depends on what bone of the foot were fractured, and the severe nature of the injury. Easiest fractures can heal well in 6 to 8 weeks without surgery http://www.tadalafil-en-belgique.com . Severe fractures may require surgery. Toe fractures are normal and generally heal well with little if any therapy. Although the bones may take 6 to 8 weeks to heal, pain usually improves very much earlier. Rarely, very serious fractures, especially of the big toe, may necessitate a cast or surgery. Metatarsal fractures heal well usually. The first metatarsal occasionally requires a cast or surgery and an extended period on crutches, however the middle three metatarsals can usually end up being treated with a rigid flat-bottom shoe and partial fat bearing. Distal limb wounds are frequent in horses after traumatic events. The use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) represents a simple method of treating wounds in equines. A case of a chronic severely contaminated distal limb wound in an 8-month-old foal is presented. The patient was managed with the combination of standard wound therapy (debridement and bandages), surgery, and PRP obtained by a manual tube protocol. No complications were observed with the PRP treatment, and the foal was fully recovered 2 months later. ...

The proposed study is a prospective, randomized, double-blinded clinical trial intended to further define the appropriate duration of antibiotic (cefazolin) administration for surgical prophylaxis in the internal fixation of closed fractures. Our hypothesis is that there will be no difference in the incidence of infection between single-dose versus 24 hours of antibiotic prophylaxis. The null hypothesis is that multiple-dose antibiotic prophylaxis will have a decreased incidence of infection.. Research Design:. A prospective, randomized, double-blinded clinical trial will be conducted to evaluate the duration of antibiotic prophylaxis. After investigators obtain Institutional Review Board approval, recruited patients will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. Both groups will receive 1 gram (g) of IV cefazolin prior to incision, per standard protocol at our institution. If a tourniquet is used, the cefazolin will be administered at least 10 minutes prior to inflation. A 2-g dose of ...
PURPOSE: The results for fixation of comminuted posterior wall acetabular fractures are not very promising with reported complications in terms of osteoarthritis, nonunion and malunion which subsequently require conversion to total hip arthroplasty. The conversion to total hip arthroplasty is possible in patients over 50 years of age but not in younger patients. So this requires new methods for salvage of the native hip in young patients. METHODS: There were six patients in our series with highly comminuted posterior wall acetabular fractures where the fragments were excised and the gap filled with tricortical anterior iliac-crest strut autograft, fixed with screws and plate ...
Advanced trauma life support (ATLS) guidelines provide a systematic approach to the initial management of the trauma patient. Teams that follow the systematic ATLS approach have less errors and better patient outcomes.1 Non-adherence to the guidelines, however, is common and can lead to medical errors and delays in diagnosis.2 3 In our academic centres, we have observed emergency medicine (EM) interns struggling to maintain the discipline to complete the primary survey before beginning the secondary survey, despite ATLS certification. In order to force the team leader to systematically approach trauma resuscitations and use closed loop communication, a blindfold is placed on the team leader. Team members are only permitted to perform orders that are explicitly directed to them by the leader. The leader only knows the ordered tasks are completed by asking the trauma team members to repeat back all completed tasks. This blindfolded training method has demonstrated strong potential to improve the ...

The neurosurgeons, contemplating in basic terms the spinal chord, have restrained themselves to symptoms for laminectomy, an inadequate and typically useless intervention. The orthopedic surgeons, nonetheless, obsessed by means of the terror of medullary lesions, have lengthy hesitated to use the basic ideas for the therapy of fractures, specifically detailed aid via strict immobilization, hence depriving themselves of the efficacy of radiculomedul- lar decompression and of the safety this approach offers to those constructions after they are themselves curious about the trauma. And moreover, how b) how many people world wide have the particularized exposure training? with supervision? corrective feedback? c)How would you really take this method on the road for wide dissemination? d) How would you make sure that clients were appropriately screened and prepared for the work? e) And is wide dissemination a goal? If so, as to the marriage and family therapists and social workers for example without prior exposure to traumatology and dissociation and PTSD per se, f) what core nuggets of knowledge would they need to ...
