Attributes of the built environment can influence active transportation, including use of public transportation. However, the relationship between perceptions of the built environment and use of public transportation deserves further attention. The objectives of this study were 1) to assess the relationship between personal characteristics and public transportation use with meeting national recommendations for moderate physical activity through walking for transportation and 2) to examine associations between personal and perceived environmental factors and frequency of public transportation use.

Three proposals for spending $100,000 on public transportation next year have a common destination. Three groups say they can expand Lawrences public transportation to the general public by spending $100,000 of city money.. The groups -- the Douglas County Community Transportation Coordinating Council, A-1 City Cab and a partnership of the Lawrence Bus Co. and Specialized Transportation Services Inc., of Merriam -- want money set aside by Lawrence city commissioners for coordinating current transportation services.. Details of the proposals have not been released, but group representatives say Lawrence residents next year could pick up the phone, call for a ride and be driven to desired destinations at reduced costs.. Its not a citywide, full public transportation system, said Pat Weaver, chair of the coordinating council and an associate scientist at Kansas Universitys Transportation Center. We feel like its taking what we have now and maximizing that as much as we can.. What Lawrence ...

The announcement was made by Bratislava spokesman Peter Bubala.. Moodys claims that it chooses and applies its conceptual reforms from an incomplete boulevard rather than a quick launch of public transportation. Because the face of our city will determine this neighborhood and this major artery for oncoming traffic. In an agreement with investors, we are revising some elements of Boulevard to improve conditions for residents, cyclists, pedestrians and travelers, Bubla said.. The cycling route will be moved along the bi-route north of the street and safely detached from the road. Thus, the collision points designed so far in the area of public transport stops are about to cease. The spokesman said that such a solution would enable the implementation of a two-lane bicycle lane on the south side of the street after the temporary bus station was completed.. The trains will extend from 2.5 to 5.5 meters. The width and number of lanes will also change, the number of bushes and bushes on the ...

The most effective life-saving traffic safety tool for a commuter and a community may be the daily metro transit pass. A person can reduce his or her chance of being in an accident by more than 90 percent simply by taking public transit as opposed to commuting by car. This means traveling by public transportation is ten times safer per mile than traveling by auto. Transit-oriented communities are five times safer than automobile-oriented communities. This means public transit cuts a communitys crash risk in half even for those who do not use public transit. Public transportation communities spur compact development which reduces auto miles traveled and produces safer speeds ...
Contemporary society is characterised by the constant increase of mobility. Although individual mobilities can be seen as a new form of capital and the premise for innovation, this has also a negative impact on surrounding environment and social structures. Hence, human travel behaviour research is essential for understanding a myriad of different societal issues. To date, human travel behaviour has been thoroughly examined using activity-travel diaries predominantly based on short period of time (up to three days). The need to understand travel behaviour from a longitudinal (monthly, yearly) perspective has increased due to the overall increase of individual mobility, together with the increase of the complexity of human travel behaviour and its flexibility in space and time. Mobile phone based data are perceived to be one promising means to cost-effectively assess human movements and its variability in the prolonged perspective. This dissertation ascertains how mobile phone based data can help ...

How much percentage of the infection risk is do to having exposed eyes? Does it make sense to protect them with swimming googles?
Im sitting on the streetcar and this guy is acting like i have cooties. Hes about 50 and sitting across from me. He keeps scooting his stuff closer to himself even though its nowhere near me. Thousands of riders boarded UTA trains and buses on Free Fare Friday, Dec. 22, and the result was a significant reduction in air pollution. An extra 17,560 cars were removed from the roads that day, and an additional 3 tons of pollutants and 200 tons of greenhouse gases were prevented from entering the atmosphere. Free Fare Friday was designed to encourage people to try public transit - and it worked, said UTA President/CEO Jerry Benson. Thousands of riders boarded our buses and trains, and we were able to save several tons of pollution from entering our atmosphere during a critical time of year for air quality. We hope this translates to more Wasatch Front residents who are willing to leave their cars at home and ride UTA again, especially during inversion season.. Ridership for the entire UTA system increased by 23 percent on Free Fare Friday, compared to the average of five previous weekdays. Approximately 22,800 more people than usual rode public transit on Dec. 22 using the same ...

State departments of transportation are focusing increased attention on freight transportation. The reasons are many, obvious and compelling. They include: (1) A rapidly increasing volume of freight; (2) Transportation overloads at major freight gateways; (3) Constraints on infrastructure capacity for all modes; (4) The need for efficiency in intermodal connections; and (5) Heavy traffic in major multimodal, multi-state transportation corridors. As a consequence, many State DOTs are analyzing the freight transportation needs of their states, giving greater priority to freight transportation investments, participating in public-private ventures, and engaging in innovative financing arrangements for freight projects. For most, this shift represents new lines of business and new ways of doing business. Many programmatic and technical issues are involved, but the foundation for programs must be constructed through policy and organization decisions. Therefore, the leaders of the State DOTs need to ...

More than 30 members of Congress, including U.S. Reps. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Jesus Chuy Garcia (D-IL), and Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), introduced legislation on Thursday calling for equal funding for transit and highways.. Called the Transit Parity Resolution, the legislation would change how Congress determines to fund highways and public transportation. Currently, Congress uses a formula set in 1982 that allocates 80 percent of federal transportation dollars to highways, and the remaining 20 percent to public transit. The resolution calls for transit funding to be equal to highway funding.. Public transit is a public good, and its past time our government treat it like one, Pressley said. For too long, our federal transportation investments have prioritized highways over public transit, incentivizing travel in private cars, which increases traffic congestion, produces pollution, and exacerbates racial and economic inequality.. The resolution is supported by several transportation ...

By 2050, continued urbanization will add 2.5 billion people to todays worldwide urban population, with nearly 90% of the growth concentrated in Asia and Africa. India, China, and Nigeria together will account for nearly 37% of the estimated increase of the total urban population. In order to ensure that the benefits of urbanization are equitably distributed, strong policy instruments are required. Emerging economies where much of the infrastructure is yet to be built offer a unique opportunity for low-carbon development. This is especially true in the case of the transportation sector. Designing cities for public transportation, walking, and cycling can offer affordable ways to meet mobility demands and cut global pollutants. Choosing an appropriate transportation technology can significantly affect the spatial structures of cities and ensure a more sustainable form of development. While large and medium cities can be designed for public transportation, smaller cities can be designed for active ...

Traffic Reform. According to the TomTom Traffic Index, Portland has become one of the top ten cities in the nation with the most traffic congestion. With our ever-growing population, issues abound with inadequate public transportation and commuting options for drivers. Our current infrastructure does not support the hundreds of thousands of cars on the roads, and there are many necessary repairs needed to restore bridges and highways. The current City Council proposal does not reduce carbon emissions, focuses on unrealistic highway expansion and minimal street repairs for a total of 450 million dollars. In other growing cities such as Los Angeles, Seattle, etc., it has been statistically and historically proven to increase one-person driver vehicles and has been unsuccessful in eliminating or decreasing traffic congestion.. How can we create a city that is more green, provides excellent public transportation and also has a budget for maintaining sustainable city infrastructure? Well, I believe ...

The national strategy for reducing road transport emissions is likely to be ultimately effective. Professor Alastair Lewis from the Department of Chemistry said: The wide range of simultaneous actions being proposed, and sectors and pollutants being targeted, is a reflection that further improving air quality in the U.K. is getting harder and harder, now the big industrial and combustion sources are under control.. Whilst road transport emissions remain a critical source of pollution in U.K. cities they are on a gradual downwards trajectory for both NOx and PM. The rate of adoption of electric vehicles may be proceeding only slowly, and uncertainty remains over their non-exhaust emissions, however the national strategy for reducing road transport emissions is likely to be ultimately effective, if a somewhat lengthy and drawn out process over two decades.. Quietly increasing. Whilst road transport has already seen recent reductions in emissions, domestic and agricultural releases of air ...

Description | Recommended courses Description Transportation has always played an essential role in the development of society, originally with regard to trade routes and harbours, but more recently with regard to land- and air-based systems as well. It is the transportation engineers responsibility to plan, design, build, operate and maintain these systems of transport, in such a way as to provide for the safe, efficient and convenient movement of people and goods. Increasing environmental concerns have revived an interest in the development and management of public transportation systems. Professional activities can range from road and transit design and operation at the urban scale, to railroad, seaway and airport location, construction and operation at the regional and national scale. Transportation engineering in North America focuses on automobile infrastructures, although it also encompasses sea, air and rail systems. Automobile infrastructures can be split into the traditional area of highway

Background: Public transportation constitutes a vulnerable sector in modern day society with a high probability of generating mass casualties if attacked. By preparing for mass-casualty attacks (MCAs), response can become more effective and public transportation can become a less rewarding target. However, preparedness for attacks, much like response, implies resource constraints, and this dissertation pinpoints some major dilemmas that inhibit achieving preparedness for MCAs on public transportation in Sweden.. Aim: The aim of this dissertation was to investigate preparedness for mass-casualty attacks on public transportation. This allowed for identification of major challenges for preparedness and response with a particular focus on the Swedish context.. Methods: Study I included 477 MCAs identified through searches of the Global Terrorism Database, journals, newspapers and websites, which were examined with descriptive statistics. Study II thematically analyzed 105 articles attained by ...
The global pandemic of physical inactivity represents a considerable public health challenge. Active transportation (i.e., walking or cycling for transport) can contribute to greater total physical activity levels. Mobile phone-based programs can promote behaviour change, but no study has evaluated whether such a program can promote active transportation in adults. This study protocol presents the design and methodology of The Smart City Active Mobile Phone Intervention (SCAMPI), a randomised controlled trial to promote active transportation via a smartphone application (app) with the aim to increase physical activity. A two-arm parallel randomised controlled trial will be conducted in Stockholm County, Sweden. Two hundred fifty adults aged 20-65 years will be randomised to either monitoring of active transport via the TRavelVU app (control), or to a 3-month evidence-based behaviour change program to promote active transport and monitoring of active travel via the TRavelVU Plus app (intervention). Testimony by Julia Kite, Policy and Research Manager, Transportation Alternatives. ***SUPPORT***. Thank you for convening this hearing. I am Julia Kite, Policy and Research Manager of Transportation Alternatives. We are a 43-year-old membership-based advocacy organization with more than 150,000 New Yorkers in our network, dedicated to biking, walking, and public transportation as city-friendly alternatives to private automobile use in New York City. We advocate on behalf of all of New York Citys pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users for safer and more livable streets.. The topic of todays hearing is very timely, because the parking systems currently in place in New York City are unsustainable, inequitable, and an impractical use of public space. For too long, parking policies have privileged the free or low-cost storage of private property, in the form of cars, on huge swathes of city streets, while pedestrians and public transit users are forced to compete for whatever space they can get. ...

A popular solution to the increased population usually lies in public transportation, it can be to the point where personal vehicles are only allowed on the outer edge of the city. With Vector, passengers dont need to be bound to the public transportation, this single person vehicle can hit the road and reduce traffic chaos especially in major cities of the country. The size is just half of a standard car, but it offers the same comfort level as car.. Designer : Bilal Majeed. ...
Welcome to Car Free Americas Web Site... Hi. Im Steve Atlas, founder of CarFreeAmerica.org. I appreciate you visiting our web site. I hope you have viewed some of our city profiles-places with walkable neighborhoods where you can live without needing to depend on a car. If you havent already, look at our gasoline price ticker on the bottom left side of our home page. As you see the price of gas steadily increase (or temporarily decrease to under $4 a gallon), do you remember when gas cost less than $1 per gallon? Nearly every week, there is at least one newspaper article about how people are coping with the high cost of gasoline. Carpooling, selling large homes in communities far from public transportation, biking or using public transportation instead of driving-these are just a few ways people are changing the way they live. Reducing our dependency on a car doesnt need to be a grim business-like taking an unpleasant medicine. Driving less can be fun. Walking, cycling, and using public ...

This study focused on the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in a metro system as an example of a public transportation system. The molecular characteristics of Staphylococcus were investigated to discern which strains were isolated from metro stations in Shanghai. These were compared with strains isolated from hospital treatment rooms and parks. Airborne Staphylococcus samples in the metro were resistant to an average of 2.64 antibiotic types, and 58.0% of the strain samples were resistant to at least three antibiotics; this was a significantly higher rate than strains from the park, but was lower than those from hospitals. The presence of two antibiotic resistance genes of Staphylococcus strains, mecA (28.0%) and qac (40.0%), were also found at significantly higher levels in metro samples than park samples, but did not differ significantly from hospital samples. Furthermore, 22.0% of the metro Staphylococcus samples were found to be biofilm-positive. The high rate of antibiotic resistance found
The Act both implements and complements the driving time and rest period provisions enacted in EU legislation. The purpose of the Act is to maintain and improve the safety and health of road transport professionals. Another aim is to promote fair competition in the transport business.. The act applies to entrepreneur drivers engaging in carriage in road transport (as referred to in the Driving Time and Rest Period Regulation and the areas of application of the AETR Agreement).. The Act on the Working Hours of Entrepreneur Drivers in Road Transport (349/2013), which entered into force on 1 June 2013, defines the maximum weekly working hours, breaks and night work in transport. The Act contains provisions requiring entrepreneur drivers to record or otherwise reliably account for their working hours and any exceptions to working hours due to technical reasons or to reasons related to the arrangement of the work.. The working hours of an entrepreneur driver may amount to no more than 48 hours per ...
The aim of Travel Smart is to influence travel behaviour change, to shift travelling commuters to off-peak periods, encourage a switch to more sustainable modes of travel such as public transport, walking and cycling or reduce travel demand altogether.. Travel Smart is based on the concept of travel planning, which is widely implemented by organisations in cities like London, Manchester, Dublin and Sydney. Essentially, travel planning is a means of evaluating how the management and employees of an organisation currently travel to work, and during the day as part of their work. Based on the analysis of existing patterns and attitudes with regard to travel, an action plan for improved transport efficiency and sustainability is prepared.. We have launched a new Travel Smart Network to intensify efforts and encourage more organisations to implement measures such as flexi travel arrangements to support employees who may wish to travel during off-peak periods. For a start, LTA will partner ...
The scope of the U.S. surface and maritime transportation systems--which primarily includes roads, mass transit systems, railroads, and ports and waterways--is vast. One of the major goals of these systems is to provide and enhance mobility. With increasing passenger and freight travel, the surface and maritime transportation systems face a number of challenges in ensuring continued mobility. These challenges include: (1) preventing congestion from overwhelming the transportation system, and (2) ensuring access to transportation for certain underserved populations and achieving a balance between enhancing mobility and giving due regard to environmental and other social goals. There is no one solution for the mobility challenges facing the nation, and numerous approaches are needed to address these challenges. These strategies include: (1) focusing on the entire surface and maritime transportation system rather than on specific modes or types of travel to achieve desired mobility outcomes, (2) ...

Rural areas in developing counties lack transportation for health delivery partly because of the geography of area [4], individual lifestyles, low household prioritization on health, and inadequacy of policy to provide transportation for health delivery as shown by our results. This challenges the effectiveness of primary health delivery programmes and strategies implemented to increase access to maternal and child health services in particular. This paper demonstrates the need for effective transportation in health delivery particularly in developing countries [11, 13] where ambulance services may not be efficient in supporting access to critical health services, and presents a framework for sustainable transportation services driven by community participation.. In the construct of the current paradigm of PHC in Ghana, referral is relied heavily upon because the main services provided under the CHPS strategy are preventive health and basic health care. This makes transportation issues very ...

The effect of transport on serum amyloid A (SAA), haptoglobin (Hp), Fibrinogen and white blood cells (WBC) was evaluated in 10 ewes and 10 beef cattle. All animals were transported by road for 6 h over a distance of about 490 km with an average speed of 80 km/h. Blood samples, collected via jugular venepuncture, were obtained before and after transport as well as after 12, 24 and 48 h rest time. One-way repeated measures analysis of variance showed a statistically significant effect of sampling time on SAA, Hp, and WBC in ewes and beef cattle. Based on these results, Hp and SAA levels, together with WBC, may be useful indicators of animal health and welfare and in predicting the risk assessment in meat inspection ...
Mapping out the effect of air pollution on Americans is often done in two parts - transportation researchers do studies on vehicle emissions and health researchers do studies on conditions such as asthma and how brain development is affected. A new center run by Texas A&M aims to bring these two parties together.. Texas A&M and four other universities received more than $11 million from the Department of Transportation to fund The Center for Advancing Research in Transportation Emissions, Energy and Health, or CAR-TEEH. Led by Joe Zietsman, Texas A&M Transportation Institutes Environment and Air Quality Division head, these researchers are focused on providing insight on the ...
Construction zone speed limits may differ from the general limits.. Electronic radar detectors are located on all autobahns, motorways, and in cities to assist the police with speed enforcement. Austria employs cameras in controlled speed zones, and drivers may be ticketed automatically for speed violations. All vehicles on the Austrian Autobahn (highway) must have a toll vignette for passenger vehicles or a toll transponder for heavier commercial vehicles. Vignettes can be purchased at most gas stations and local Tabak-Traffik tobacco shops.. The legal limit for blood alcohol is 0.05 BAC. Fines for violating this limit range from 218€ to 3,634€ and result in the suspension of the drivers license.. During heavy congestion on highways, when traffic significantly slows, Austrian law mandates that motorists leave a corridor for emergency vehicles to pass. The corridor forms to the inside of the right-hand lane of traffic.. Public Transportation Conditions. Public transit systems are excellent. ...
Public transport in Tallinn is currently free for all registered residents of the capital city. The coalition Centre Party, however, intends to expand free public transport in Tallinn to all Estonian residents, part of a broader effort to ultimately provide free transport throughout Estonia.
Active transportation refers to modes of travel that incorporate physical activity as part of the trip. Examples include walking and bicycling, as well as transit, since walking or bicycling is typically required for transit station access and egress. The Nashville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization has recently restructured its regional transportation policies and programming priorities as part of the development of the 2035 Regional Transportation Plan to enable more active transportation by encouraging the implementation of infrastructure such as sidewalks, bikeways, and transit. The result is a significant increase in the number of federally-funded transportation projects in the greater Nashville region that provide opportunities for active transportation trips. ...

However, Nakhon Chai Air, a public bus company, has reintroduced a transportation service for durian lovers by allowing them to load the fruit in the hold of the bus. However, passengers will not be allowed to take the fruit to the interior of the bus. Kruawan Wongrakmit, CEO of the firm, said that since the durian season has arrived, many people wanted to send it to their friends and families or wanted to take the fruit along on a journey. Many were not sure if they would be allowed to carry it in public transport. She said durian was welcome on Nakhon Chai Air buses but the firm had to be given prior intimation. The fruit would be carefully packed and sealed in boxes provided by the firm. She said the packed durians would loaded in... Full article: http://www.nationmultimedia.com/news/national/30316193 ...

The Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program (NTPP) is a Congressionally mandated program (SAFETEA-LU Section 1807) that, since 2006, has provided roughly $25 million each to four communities--Columbia, Missouri; Marin County, California; Minneapolis area, Minnesota; Sheboygan County, Wisconsin--to spur levels of walking and cycling via a variety of planning measures.. The University of Minnesota Center for Transportation Studies is leading the community-wide population surveys for the Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program (NTPP), specifically in phase 2, to measure changes in levels of walking and bicycling as a result of the enhanced conditions for walking and bicycling. To evaluate impacts of the program, two community-wide surveys were conducted before (phase 1: 2006) and after (phase 2: 2010) the pilot program.. This report describes the evaluation efforts based on community-wide population surveys. In contrast to project-specific evaluations, community-wide surveys serve the purpose ...
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has promoted intercity passenger rail service since 1976 by augmenting Amtraks basic system of interstate trains. In 2018, Amtrak had 12,306,444 boardings and alightings (deboardings) in California (the sum of boardings and alightings represents Amtrak ridership). Over 869,116 California residents were members of the Amtrak Guest Rewards frequent user program in 2018. Figure 4 provides the number of boardings and alightings by counties in 2018 and the percent change in ridership from 2017 to 2018. Ridership increased in Solano County after a new station opened in Fairfield-Vacaville at the end of 2017. In other counties, natural disasters impacted ridership. Santa Barbara ridership increased because Highway 101 was closed due to mudslides. Wildfires temporarily suspended service in Butte, Shasta, and Siskiyou counties and may have also impacted ridership in San Luis Obispo.. Figure 4: Amtrak Ridership in 2018 ...
The Connecticut Business and Industry Association on Monday issued a statement saying that although infrastructure is important to Connecticuts economy, the association could not support adding additional cost burdens, like tolls, on individuals and businesses.. Although CBIA recognized the state needs to improve infrastructure, they faulted the legislature for diverting funds away from the Special Transportation Fund in the past and said it is incumbent upon the General Assembly to determine ways to fund transportation improvement.. But not with tolls.. It is the consensus of the board that at this time of fiscal instability due to high state spending and fixed costs, we cannot support highway tolls as one of those funding mechanisms, the CBIA wrote.. Gov. Ned Lamont has said that improving the states transportation system - including highways, bridges and public transportation - is key to making Connecticut a more business friendly state.. However, a number of businesses - particularly ...
Transportation systems have evolved since ancient time. This continual transformation of the ways in which humans travel and transport goods is often closely tied to technological advances in the field of transportation. In many ways, the culture of a civilization is heavily influenced by the transportation technologies available to it. However, the relationship goes the other way as well. The transportation technologies present in a society are also often determined by the culture of that society.. In the 15th and 16th centuries, an iconic ship known as the Caravel largely dominated the sea-faring industries of Southwestern Europe. Although the exact origin of this ship is still debated, it had been used as an offshore fishing vessel by the peoples of the Iberian Peninsula since at least the 1200s. The ship featured a strong Moorish influence, and its design, at least in part, may have been passed from the Islamic body of knowledge to the Western Christian societies of Spain and Portugal.
