Transgender women are disproportionately impacted by HIV. Transgender women involved in sex work may experience exacerbated violence, social exclusion, and HIV vulnerabilities, in comparison with non-sex work-involved transgender women. Scant research has investigated sex work among transgender women in the Caribbean, including Jamaica, where transgender women report pervasive violence. The study objective was to examine factors associated with sex work involvement among transgender women in Jamaica. ...

This is three-step study. Step 1 will screen men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women who are unaware of their HIV status and 1) report high risk behaviors for acquiring HIV-1 infection or 2) who have symptoms of acute retroviral syndrome or 3) who have a sexual partner with newly-diagnosed acute or recent HIV infection. HIV testing will be conducted for several thousand MSM and transgender women from study opening until July 2015. In Step 2, high risk HIV-1 uninfected MSM and transgender women with high risk for acquiring HIV will be tested at regular intervals for incident HIV-1 (using tests for HIV p24 and/or HIV RNA). (During this period, men will receive standard HIV prevention interventions.) In Step 3, individuals with acute or recent HIV-1 infection will be enrolled in a 48-week randomized, open-label study of the effects of immediate vs. deferred ART on the decay dynamics of HIV viral load in plasma, semen and rectal secretions. (ART will be provided prior to 24 weeks for ...
President Donald Trump recently announced an unofficial ban on transgender people serving in the U.S. military, describing their service as a financial "burden," plagued with "tremendous medical costs and disruption." Trumps announcement was followed by a debate within queer communities about what this ban means for the transgender movement as it intersects with an anti-imperialist agenda.. Despite dissenting voices, the current discourse on the Left seems to be dominated by cheerleading for the marginal victory of transgender inclusion in the military, sidelining the queer communitys historic resistance to dependence on exploitative institutions, exemplified through the Against Equality organization and The Sylviaa Rivera Project.. Let us make one thing clear: The Department of Defense (DOD) should not be celebrated as an economic provider for the marginalized. Instead, we should reimagine a more socio-economically just distribution of resources that does not depend on an institution that ...
Transgender persons are at increased risk for certain types of chronic diseases, cancers, and mental health problems. Below is a list of the key health concerns transgender people should consider discussing with their doctor.
But most of all, extensive lobbying has been the key to the success. Several LGBT organisations in Norway have been working actively on these issues for years, Part of it is the fact that the largest national LGBT organisation Fri (Free), and its youth organisation Queer Youth, has had a focus on this for a number of years now. In addition FTPN (Association for Transgender People in Norway) has of course worked extensively on the issue. On the other side of the table weve also had many allies in politics and in the state departments. The fact that two restrictions proposed for this law that aimed to put limits on legal gender recognition, proposed by the Christian Conservatives and Center Party, were stricken down 87 against 9 and 01 against 6, respectively, clearly shows how broad support this law had. But also in the Department of Health and Directorate of Health weve been received and heard on numerous occasions. Now that Im out of LGBT activism for the time being to finish my PhD abroad, ...

I come late to organizing as a transgender activist. In doing so, I?ve learned a lot. I?ve learned transgendered people truly are everywhere and not just in New York, San Francisco and Washington D.C. I?ve learned many want to quietly assimilate into the white, heterosexual, middle class status quo that is the dominant culture of our nation. I?ve learned quite a few of us have no wish or desire for such assimilation?that for some of us, our greatest desire is to shake up that dominant culture, to question gender and identity on every level?social, biological, political and personal. I?ve learned that perhaps right at this moment there is a transgendered person?most likely an MTF transsexual or crossdresser, most likely a person of color, being brutally murdered. I?ve learned people much younger than I are coming out as transgendered in ways I never believed possible when I was their age and are challenging not only the status quo, but also calling on ?old? activists like me to take another look ...
April 30, 2014 - TLDEF offered testimony today before the New York City Councils Committee on Immigration about the need to create a municipal identification card system so that residents who face barriers to obtaining government-issued identification can more easily acquire it. The proposed law, which would create a New York City ID, is intended to help those who lack legal immigration status, but it would also help transgender people who often have difficulties securing accurate identification cards with gender markers that match who they are. Without proper ID, transgender people face tremendous barriers to accessing employment and public sector services.. TLDEF Staff Attorney Noah Lewis testified before the Immigration Committee on City Council Bill Int 253, which would create a New York City identity card program. Lewis explained the unique obstacles transgender people currently face in getting identification cards that match who they are:. "While proof of surgery has largely been removed ...

The debate over which bathroom transgender people can use has been taking over the Internet and our social conversations for weeks now, and its getting a bit ridiculous. Transgender people have always used the bathroom that they feel comfortable with, whether its the bathroom that belongs to the sex they were born with or not, and there have been no problems.. In the heat of this debate, Americans are not only divided on the issue but collectively distracted from bigger, more important issues, such as the fact that there are three nuclear disasters occurring throughout the nation that have been getting no media attention.. One major disaster that will soon come to head all started with a fire at the Bridgeton Landfill in Missouri that has been burning for five years. Despite this extremely long length of time, authorities say that this fire is nowhere close to being contained. Whats more is that St. Louis County officials have reported that they have an emergency plan in place because the ...

See list of unlawfully killed transgender people for homicides of transgender people. In 1972 George Duncan and Roger Jones were thrown into a river by a group of men believed to be police officers, resulting in Duncans death. Jones refused to identify their attacks out of fear for his life. A group of officers were charged but acquitted, and the case is said to be the subject of a government cover-up, with a police report describing it as the result of a "high-spirited frolic that went wrong". In January 1987, Raymond Keam was killed in Alison Park, Randwick, Sydney. His injuries were consistent with attackers having jumped on his chest while he lay on the ground. In December 1988, Scott Johnsons body was found at the bottom of a 50 metre cliff near Blue Fish Point around Manly. There have been many investigations into the ...

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for transgender people replaces the hormones naturally occurring in their bodies with those of the other sex. However, not all cases of hormone replacement therapy are used by transgender people. Some reasons for this include men who wish to have a hair-free body, as a result of less of the testosterone, androgen`s in their body. Hormone therapy is the use of hormones in medical treatment. Treatment with hormone antagonists may also referred to as hormonal therapy.. Its purpose is to cause the development of the secondary sex characteristics of the desired gender. Some intersex people also receive HRT, either starting in childhood to confirm the gender they were assigned, or later, if this assignment has proven to be incorrect.. Hormonal therapy is one of the major modalities of medical treatment for cancer, others being cytotoxic chemotherapy and targeted therapy (biotherapeutics). Because steroid hormones are powerful drivers of gene expression in certain ...
I was confident that being as open and honest as possible would encourage others to be the same. Lets face it -- female Daddies tend to attract some intriguing questions. I have gradually encouraged my children to call me MJ instead of Daddy, and they are slowly getting used to people referring to me as their Mom. Having two Moms in their lives makes things complicated sometimes, and causes friction between their biological mother and myself. Although I do not wish to compete for the Mom title, it is not socially acceptable for my children to have a female Dad. Keeping the kids interests at heart, it seems easier to allow people to refer to me as their mom, rather than teaching the kids to correct strangers at every turn. I am often accused of "stealing the title". Without having experienced the pain of labour I am apparently unqualified to claim Mom. I believe that how we love and nurture our children is more important than a label, particularly when considering the childs comfort level in ...

In July, Callen-Lorde warned of potential public health risk for transgender women and transfeminine people due to a nationwide shortage of some generic and brand name injectable estrogen. At that time, the makers of the drugs reported manufacturing delays in getting the medications to the market.. A sign on letter was circulated nationally. In New York City, First Lady Chirlane McCray - in her capacity as Co-Chair for the Commission on Gender Equity - signed the letter.. "The downstream medical and mental health implications from interruptions of life-sustaining therapies that keep transgender women engaged in healthcare are dire," said Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, Assistant ...

Both testosterone and estrogen are needed for healthy bone and to prevent osteoporosis. Estrogen is the predominant sex hormone that slows bone loss. The hips will rotate slightly forward due to changes in the tendons so hip discomfort is not uncommon. If estrogen therapy is conducted prior to the pelvis ossification that occurs around the age of 25, the pelvic outlet and inlet open slightly. This widening will also widen the femora as they are connected to the pelvis. The pelvis will still have some masculine characteristics by default but the end result will be wider hips than a normal male and closer to a cis female ...

L-your right, How come people in the LGBT community dont call out and tell those who misusing, misappropriating or silencing the experience and voices of another group. How come people dont call out transgender people who misuse the term and how come they dont tell them to stop using the intersex term when they dont qualify to have the term. How come I see trans people who still continue to misuse the intersex term and arent called out and told to stop it. Every time I call them out for misusing the intersex name, I get called out, but when they use it, they dont get called out and i see it as being unfair and not right at all. I see it as their trying to erase my experience as an intersex and silencing my experience as an intersex at my expense for their gain. That aint right and that aint fair and I wonder why people arent calling them out when they dont qualify to be intersex and dont have the right to speak on behalf or speak for the intersex community ...

Amen, indeed.. Transcript below the fold. Welcome to Washington! The fun is about to begin, but first, please join me in pausing for a moment, to ask God?s blessing upon our nation and our next president.. O God of our many understandings, we pray that you will Bless us with tears - for a world in which over a billion people exist on less than a dollar a day, where young women from many lands are beaten and raped for wanting an education, and thousands die daily from malnutrition, malaria, and AIDS.. Bless us with anger - at discrimination, at home and abroad, against refugees and immigrants, women, people of color, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.. Bless us with discomfort - at the easy, simplistic ?answers? we?ve preferred to hear from our politicians, instead of the truth, about ourselves and the world, which we need to face if we are going to rise to the challenges of the future.. Bless us with patience - and the knowledge that none of what ails us will be ?fixed? anytime soon, ...
Still, just hours before the Senate takes a test vote on a bill to protect gays, lesbians and transgender people from workplace discrimination, Boehner's spokesman indicated the legislation is not on the Ohio Republican's agenda.. The statement from Boehner's office against ENDA did not, of course, hint at anxiety over moving on controversial legislation that could incite ire from the right-wing base.. The Speaker believes this legislation will increase frivolous litigation and cost American jobs, especially small business jobs, Michael Steel, Boehner's spokesman, said simply.. A GOP aide added that Boehner has long held the position that ENDA is bad policy, and that he believes gays and lesbians are already covered by existing employment law.. But Boehner's opposition comes as the Senate seems poised to approve the legislation this week, with 60 public supporters, including an unusually united Democratic party.. On the House side, should Republican leaders opt not to ...
In European societies, Roman law, post-classical canon law, and later common law, referred to a persons sex as male, female or hermaphrodite, with legal rights as male or female depending on the characteristics that appeared most dominant.[33] The 12th-century Decretum Gratiani states that "Whether an hermaphrodite may witness a testament, depends on which sex prevails".[34][35][36] The foundation of common law, the 17th Century Institutes of the Lawes of England described how a hermaphrodite could inherit "either as male or female, according to that kind of sexe which doth prevaile."[37][38] Legal cases have been described in canon law and elsewhere over the centuries.. In some non-European societies, sex or gender systems with more than two categories may have allowed for other forms of inclusion of both intersex and transgender people. Such societies have been characterized as "primitive", while Morgan Holmes states that subsequent analysis has been simplistic or romanticized, failing to ...
Overview: Groundswell Fund is the largest funder of the U.S. Reproductive Justice (RJ) movement. For more than a decade, we have enabled foundations and individual donors to increase the impact of their giving by offering a different kind of philanthropic model. Different in who we are: A program staff of women of color who come directly out of community and labor organizing and have a combined 70 years of grassroots organizing and civic engagement experience within communities of color; a board comprised of grassroots leaders shaping strategy alongside a few funders and donors. Different in who we support: women of color (WOC), low-income women, and transgender people who are organizing at the grassroots. Different in how we support the field: not just through grants, but through capacity building support focused on boosting grassroots power, and funder organizing that lifts up our grantees with a larger audience of funders and donors who can move resources to their work, whether or not these ...

In no way would I suggest that the struggle transgender people face isnt real. But lets face it. She was living as a man, not a woman, until six months ago. Plastic surgeon Dr. Kim Seok-Kwun, a devout Protestant known as the "father of South Korean transgender people," is well aware of the unease his work creates in this deeply conservative country. Kim said in an interview that he used to "agonize" over performing sex-change operations and was "overcome with a sense of shame." But since he "decided to defy Gods will," he feels a great sense of achievement for helping people who feel trapped in the wrong body. "Some people are born without genitals or with cleft lips or with no ears or with their fingers stuck together. Why does God create people like this? Arent these Gods mistakes?" Kim asked. "And isnt a mismatched sexual identity a mistake, too?" Kim has conducted about 320 sex-change operations over the past 28 years, widely believed to be the most by any single doctor in the country (Associated Press, Apr. 1).. ...

If you thought the bathroom issue that many transgender people face was contentious, then let me tell you something - you aint seen nothing yet. Thomas, his marriage, his unborn baby, and his very right to exist will all be called into question as unfounded fears and phobias run rampant....
We dont have a definitive answer to that; there have been a few small-scale studies showing brain differences in transgender people, but as you can imagine, governments and private funders arent exactly chomping at the bit to support research on this issue. What we do know is that while everyones story is different, gender variant individuals have a strong and persistent sense of self from a very early age, and to one degree or another, that identity does not match the body we were born with ...
