In the present study, a slope volute is investigated to explore an effective method to reduce high pressure pulsation level, and its influence on flow structures is analyzed using numerical simulation. The stress is placed on experimental investigation of unsteady pressure pulsation inside the slope volute pump. For that purpose, pressure pulsations are extracted at nine locations along the slope volute casing covering sensitive pump regions. Results show that distinct pressure pulsation peaks at fBPF, together with nonlinear components are captured. The use of multiple infusions through one cannula is an increasingly common practice in anaesthesia. High pressures in the line often lead to occlusion alarms and pump disconnection. In this study, we aim to determine the pressures generated in common 3-way infusion devices, using simple low-cost equipment available and currently in use in the operating theatre environment. We compared three different common and commercially available 3-way infusion devices that allowed multiple infusions through one cannula in vitro. One with anti-siphon valves, one without valves, and serial extension sets with side ports connected in series. An invasive blood pressure transducer was used to monitor line pressure. Seven different infusion rates were used to simulate different infusions. 3-way infusion devices with anti-siphon valves have 5.5 times the infusion pressures compared to devices without valves (P | 0.001). Surgical or catheter-based treatments seek to alleviate the blood pressure gradient through the coarctation in order to reduce the workload on the heart. The pressure gradient is dependent on the anatomic severity of the coarctation: the greater the % of area reduction, the larger the pressure gradient. Furthermore, the pressure gradient is also greatly dependent on the flow rate and therefore the physiologic state of the patient: a small pressure gradient at rest can increase several-fold even in mild exercise conditions. The clinician can easily measure the pressure gradient through the coarctation under resting conditions, either by using a catheter-driven pressure transducer or a sphygmometer. Implanted within the abdominal insert of child dummies, they can be used to detect abdominal loading due to the belt during frontal collisions. In the present study - which is part of the EC funded CASPER project - two versions of APTS (V1 and V2) were evaluated in abdominal belt compression tests, torso flexion test (V1 only) and two series of sled tests with degraded restraint conditions. The results suggest that the two versions have similar responses, and that the pressure sensitivity to torso flexion is limited. We previously reported the use of a catheter system to damage the tricuspid valve and create infectious endocarditis (IE) in an animal model. The current study aims to create a faint IE model suitable for antibiotic prophylaxis using a low bacterial inoculum. We also aim to explore a way to quantitatively assess valvular impairment and to predict the success of the IE models during catheterization. Ninety rabbits were assigned to two groups according to the density of bacteria inoculated (1 × 105 CFU for Group A and 1 × 104 CFU for Group B). A catheter system consisting of a polyethylene catheter and a guide wire were used to damage the valve. The catheter system was passed through the rabbits tricuspid valves under echocardiographic guidance. A pressure transducer was used to assess right atrial pressure (PRA) before and just after valvular damage to calculate the pressure alterations (ΔPRA).
