Multicultural research approaches stress the importance of understanding the cultural interpretations and/ or associations of colour in product design, as these may result of century-old traditions, religious beliefs, contemporary influences, political an historical developments and form the cultural foundation of a country or people, ref name=TNS,TNS Multicultural Research Services. Based upon two years of fieldwork in a mental health service for migrants in Lisbon, this article underlines how the psychiatric interpretation of the emotional experience of displacement, homelessness and (non) belonging in migrants can be influenced by colonial legacies. These legacies - incorporated, despite the best of intentions, as a constitutive element of diagnosis and treatment into the therapeutic practices of psychiatric counselling - pathologize experiences and behaviours of marginalized people of non-Western origins, reproducing discriminative attitudes and institutional racism. You came to me, Hippocrates, to give me the hellebore, giving credit to foolish men by whom my job is considered madness. I was writing about the harmony of the cosmos, the description of the pole and about the stars […] If you, convinced that I was insane, had made me drink this medicine, my wisdom would have become madness and your art would have been blamed as responsible of creating folly [Letter of Democritus

Buddhist philosophers argue that there is no general entity, such as a universal, which is responsible for the fact that we can apply a term, such as pot, to more than one particular. They argue this because they believe that only momentary particulars exist. Dividing the world into enduring substantial objects that can be classified according to their differing natures is at best a useful illusion, according to Buddhists. The issue then becomes how to explain the fact that we refer to seemingly enduring entities in our language. Buddhists claim that when we use the term pot as a general concept, we refer to every individual that is not a non-pot. This is the distinctive feature of the Buddhist apoha theory, as mentioned in the above quote. The advantage of this theory for Buddhists is that it does not require any general essence that all pots have to share. Instead, the term pot refers as the result of a double negation... ...

Pneumococcus is a bacterium that healthy people commonly have in their nose and throat; this is called pneumococcal carriage. Carriage is usually harmless, but can progress to serious disease like pneumonia, meningitis, and blood stream infections or to less serious, but burdensome, diseases like sinusitis or ear infections. Infants and the elderly bear the greatest burden of pneumococcal disease with over 800,000 annual global deaths from this germ among children under 5 years of age. Furthermore, pneumococcus has developed resistance to antibiotics making it increasingly difficult to treat pneumococcal infections. Within the United States some Native American groups, like the Navajo and the White Mountain Apache tribes, suffer from pneumococcal disease much more often than people in the general US population. We dont know why pneumococcus disproportionately afflicts these communities, but we know this health disparity can be significantly reduced through vaccination. In 2000, for the first ...
Aotearoa New Zealand has escaped the worst impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our country has had comparatively few cases of COVID, and we have only experienced one major lockdown nationwide, although our biggest city Auckland has been more impacted by four lockdowns.
The American Kidney Fund (AKF) has launched a nationwide study examining the factors that can make it difficult for people who are on dialysis to adhere consistently to their prescribed treatment regimens. This study, funded by Amgen, seeks to identify reasons for non-adherence so that appropriate patient interventions may be designed.. The treatment regimen for dialysis patients is demanding: medication, regular dialysis treatment, and strict fluid and diet restrictions.. Kidney failure is an enormously difficult condition to live with, and its crucial that we gain a better understanding of the unique challenges patients face in their daily care management, said LaVarne A. Burton, president and chief executive officer of the American Kidney Fund. With that knowledge, well be able to develop education programs and interventions to help patients overcome barriers to adherence and improve their health.. On July 1, CMS also proposed updates to its performance measures under the ESRD Quality Incentive Program (QIP) for payment years 2013 and 2014. The ESRD QIP is a Medicare savings program that will reduce payments by up to two percent to dialysis facilities who fail to meet certain performance measures. Performance measures during the first year of the ESRD QIP (2012) include a target hemoglobin range of 10-12 g/dL, and a hemodialysis adequacy measure.. CMS is proposing to eliminate the bottom level of the target hemoglobin range from its performance measures in 2013 to coincide with recent recommendations from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) use in kidney patients. The FDA released findings in June that showed ESA use by kidney patients can lead to increased risks of stroke, adverse cardiovascular reactions and death. Accordingly, ESA labels now instruct doctors to use lower doses of ESAs based on a patients individual needs, rather than to ...

In a digitally connected world where diversity of identities is a reality which we must confront every time we log into our smart phones and social media accounts, academia has played a pioneering role in the way we learn how to be inclusive and embrace diversity. Nevertheless, recent demonstrations across American campuses as well as the growing expressions of hate and violence in online space worldwide, make question the preparedness of traditional education methods to tackle the virtual multicultural world we live in. Grassroots intercultural dialogue programs between citizens living in different societies have flourished over the past decade as a response to the growing antagonism between some of those societies. Those programs aim at building mutual understanding and a sense of empathy among participants, creating bridges and fostering a new culture of constructive engagement between young citizens. Lately, online dialogue programs carried out by organizations like Soliya have received an ...
We understand culture as a dynamic system that creates and defines meaning. The dynamics involved are viewed as sources of creativity that can give rise to something new, but can also cause conflicts, including violence and war - and are analysed accordingly.. Mobility, migration and transfer constitute not only crucial challenges of our times. It is our working hypothesis that they have been fundamental experiences in all eras. These experiences and processes concern the development of groups, societies, religions, and behavioural patterns, including every-day social practices, as well as the creation of art and literary works. Like all cultural phenomena they are historically contingent, thus multi-layered and modifiable. They reflect current power structures and social inequalities; at the same time they are intrinsically linked to a search for orientation and order.. We view our research as. ...
The most intense cultural conflicts tend to be disputes over the proper way to structure and maintain mass-scale social life. Accordingly, whether within or across national boundaries, disagreements regarding politics (and religion, as the other major force that regulates mass-scale social life) are much more likely to lead to acrimony and even violence than, say, disagreements over preferred personality traits or tastes in art. Politics can affect the lives of others in a way that personality and taste do not. It has been a flashpoint over the centuries and serious attempts at understanding cultural conflict must address the reasons for political differences.. What is it that leads individuals-even in nearly identical social milieus-to hold such distinct, often persistent, and potentially explosive political orientations? Traditional social science approaches have ignored the role of biology in these differences and focused on variables directly relevant to political life. Scholars argued over ...

We resequenced portions of three helicase genes (BLM, WRN, and RECQL) identifying a total of 37 noncoding single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Haplotype inference predicted 50 haplotypes in BLM, 56 in WRN, and 47 in RECQL in a sample of 600 chromosomes. Approximately 10% of the predicted haplotypes were shared among all ethnic groups. Linkage disequilibrium and recombination effects showed that each locus has taken a diverse evolutionary path. Primate DNA analysis of the same ...
Introduction: In the Southern Cone of Latin America physical inactivity has become the fifth most important determinant of death. There is no published data describing and comparing physical activity (PA) patterns among different cities in this region.. METHODS: CESCAS I is an observational, prospective cohort study entailing a probabilistic sample of 7524 representing the general adult population in four middle-size cities of the Southern Cone of Latin America. PA was assessed through the transcultural adapted questionnaire from the International Physical Activity Questionnaire long form. The indicator of PA intensity was expressed continuously, in metabolic equivalent task (MET) per minutes per week. We expressed the total PA score per week as Total MET-minutes/week constituted by the sum of Walking, Moderate and Vigorous MET minutes/week scores. Insufficient PA was defined as , Total 600 MET-minutes/week. Analyses were based on weighted data taking into account individual probabilities of ...

The author will present quantitative and qualitative results from the South African PAGEC (Perception and Assessment of Global Environmental Change) study. The study forms part of an international investigation of the topic, and is the first study on this issue to be undertaken in the Southern Hemisphere. A cybernetic approach to the analysis and interpretation of the data will be used to illustrate the relevance of certain basic systemic assumptions. Four language groups (Afrikaans, Zulu, Sotho and English) were sampled in two regions (urban and nonurban) (n=801). Results suggest that the traditionally conceived ethnic variable is much more complex than is usually acknowledged, and is affected by socioeconomic factors such as the situational factors of poverty. The transactional relationship between humans and their natural environment is also seen as being mediated by certain cultural factors that are fundamental to the differences that are found in transcultural research. Amongst these are ...
The development of modern science has depended strongly on specific features of the cultures involved; however, its results are widely and transculturally accepted and applied. The science and technology of electricity, for example, emerged as a specific product of post-Renaissance Europe, rooted in the Greek philosophical tradition that encourages explanations of nature in theoretical terms. It did not evolve in China presumably because such encouragement was missing. The transcultural acceptance of modern science and technology is postulated to be due, in part, to the common biological dispositions underlying human cognition, with generalizable capabilities of abstract, symbolic and strategic thought. These faculties of the human mind are main prerequisites for dynamic cultural development and differentiation. They appear to have evolved up to a stage of hunters and gatherers perhaps some 100 000 years ago. However, the extent of the correspondence between some constructions of the human mind and the

An alcoholism recovery home was established for Mariel Cuban refugees, but client selection procedures and program were inappropriate. A viable alternative was found with Hispanic Alcoholics Anonymous, and the program was converted to this approach. Problems of professionalism and the clinical relationship to AA emerged. Clinical interventions are inappropriate in the AA context, but sociologists may adopt the ethnographers role. Exploration of the transcultural adaptation of AA ideas for an Hispanic population proved therapeutic when clients were placed in roles such as collaborator and cultural informant. Sociologists involved with groups in which clinical roles are inappropriate may find subjective refuge in the role of ethnographic researcher.

In exploring both of these themes Capurro has re-vivified the transcultural and intercultural expressions of how we bring an understanding of information to bear on scientific knowledge production and intermediation. Capurro has long stressed the need to look deeply into how we ...

Lev 18:22) Thou shalt not lie [shâkab] with mankind [zâkâr], as with womankind: it is abomination [tôêbah] . (Lev 20:13) If a man [îysh] also lie [shâkab] with mankind [zâkâr], as he lieth [mishkâb] with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination [tôêbah]: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. While these commands explicitly condemn male homosex and are presented as general commands given to all Israel, relatively recently these have become the subject of intense attack by prohomosex polemicists. While most admit that sexual moral codes are transcultural and transhistorical, attempts are made to find grammatical, categorical and cultural aspects that would disallow the injunctions which prohibit homosex. Most of these prohomosex writers usually first assert that the Hebrew word tōʻēḇā for abomination, which describes male sex with men here, does not usually signify something inherently evil, like adultery or theft, but something ...

No one is entirely sure when magical penis loss first came to Africa. One early incident was recounted by Dr. Sunday Ilechukwu, a psychiatrist, in a letter some years ago to the Transcultural Psychiatric Review. In 1975, while posted in Kaduna, in the north of Nigeria, Dr. Ilechukwu was sitting in his office when a policeman escorted in two men and asked for a medical assessment. One of the men had accused the other of making his penis disappear. This had caused a major disturbance in the street. As Ilechukwu tells it, the victim stared straight ahead during the examination, after which the doctor pronounced him normal. Exclaiming, Ilechukwu wrote, the patient looked down at his groin for the first time, suggesting that the genitals had just reappeared.. According to Ilechukwu, an epidemic of penis theft swept Nigeria between 1975 and 1977. Then there seemed to be a lull until 1990, when the stealing resurged. Men could be seen in the streets of Lagos holding on to their genitalia either ...

The blanket terms Asian cinema and East Asian cinema tend to elide the distinctive ways individual nations, regions, and cities have represented themselves in the face of cultural domination. Jenny Kwok Wah Lau has edited a new collection of writings, Multiple Modernities: Cinemas and Popular Media in Transcultural East Asia, to combat this tendency. The concept of multiple modernities refers to the interdisciplinary approach of identifying specific modernities in each locality rather than assuming that Asian or East Asian modernity follows a uniform path in resistance to or in compliance with that of the West. The format of Laus book fits this thesis well: separated into 12 chapters, the anthology highlights 12 different pop culture terrains across various geographic categories from nations (South Korea, Taiwan) to cities (Beijing) and places in between (Hong Kong).. Two of the books many merits stand out especially prominently. First, it is a useful introduction to various popular ...

Cynthia Hale:. Hale, an executive assistant in the Washington, D.C., headquarters, is a savvy collaborator; bridging the gap between traditional and progressive thinkers in the workplace. She serves as the co-lead facilitator for the African American Strategy Group. Building a committee of next level thinkers is her highest priority and crucial to the longevity of the group.. Hale shares that her curiosity of the groups purpose prompted a conversation with the former Washington Office group lead facilitator.. Hearing that membership had decreased significantly, I made a conscious decision to do what I could to reverse this trend, Hale said.. Her highly-energized committee recently hosted three cultural awareness events: viewing of videos created by Urban American Outdoors; guided tour of the National Museum of African Art and career orientation for St Augustine Catholic School in Washington, DC.. As a young military wife, she had the opportunity to live overseas, including Turkey and Japan, ...
Like many others in the health care field, we paid little attention to patients cultural background until we experienced two cases which profoundly emphasised the need for cultural awareness and sensitivity. Both involved severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) where the patients were initially unable to speak for themselves as they were in comatose states.. One case was that of a member of the Shoshone Paiute tribe. This woman, M, was involved in a serious automobile accident in which she sustained a TBI leaving her comatose. She had no visitors during her first two weeks in the intensive care unit (ICU). Little was known about her background. M seemed to be recovering from her injuries, but did not respond in any way to environmental stimulation or attempts to assess her level of consciousness. She appeared comatose despite brain images revealing no damage accounting for her continued comatose state. Near the end of her third week in ICU, Ms mother and aunt visited. We learned that M ...
The word cultural competence is a synonym for competence in a particular area, and is used in a wide variety of contexts.. For example, in the US, a cultural competence job title is often the name of a job that will be considered the best fit for the person, but will not necessarily be a good fit for everyone.. In the UK, the term is also used to describe the kind of person who has good health and is well-informed about the health of their family and friends.. In Ireland, the word is used to identify someone who has achieved cultural competence, and has achieved a certain level of cultural competence.. In Canada, the language is also associated with cultural competence jobs, and in the United States, cultural competence has been defined as being in the academic or educational sector.. So what does this mean?. Well, as the word suggests, cultural competency is a quality that is shared by a group of people.. For people with the correct level of cognitive ability, this means that they can apply ...
By what means do Buddhist artworks and structures manifest and communicate their spiritual efficacy? The tale above answers this question by relating the rapport between the foreign monks and the miraculous statue. The monks felt compelled to travel over mountains and across seas in an effort to catch but one glimpse of and worship the statue; the statue, gilded and crafted skillfully and carefully, responded to the monks devotion by emitting a bright light. The essays in this volume of Ars Orientalis seek to respond to this question more broadly. They offer a transcultural perspective on performative agency-defined as the visual and material properties of Buddhist artworks and sites that have the capability to both engage with as well as be engaged by devotees in a transformative manner, similar to that of the Changgansi statue and its bright, golden hue.[2] In doing so, we build upon earlier scholarship in the disciplines of religious studies and art history that has considered the ritual ...
This book is based on the papers presented in the The Barents and the Baltic Sea region: contacts, influences and social change symposium that took place at the University of Oulu on December 10th-11th, 2015. It was an international event organized by the Department of History and Transcultural Encounters Research Center (TCERC). The symposium continued series of researcher meetings at the University of Oulu. These contribute to Arctic and Nordic research, both of which belong to the universitys focal areas. The symposium focuses on cultural, economic, political, religious, social and other ...
This dissertation focuses on a case study of the multi-lateral trade and commercial networks that flourished between the United States and the Spanish colonial provinces of Venezuela, especially during and immediately after the crucial era of comercio neutral (neutral trade) between 1797 and 1808. It argues that trade between late-colonial Venezuela. and the United States was a forge of transcultural relations, and explores how commercial networks of traders, government officials, and diplomats influenced the decisions of policymakers in both regions.
The award of literary prizes is a highly potent tool of cultural policy that frequently determines the wider national and international impact of a literary work. As such it is of crucial relevance to the study of comparative literature in a number of ways: the award of literary prizes reflects the beginnings of the successful or, as the case may be, the (ultimately) abortive formation of literary canons; moreover, it affords insights into processes of cultural production and marketing and reveals in which ways political and economic agendas are tied up with these processes; it also offers a perspective on transnational and transcultural aspects of the production and reception of literature and indicates shifting notions of the social function of literature and the writer; literature is thus understood as a cultural product in ever changing contexts which is frequently subject to external forces of which literary prizes become indicators or even enforcers. This module will investigate with the ...

A paper published in the Journal of Transcultural Nursing by Suzanne Johnston and Joyceen Boyle (based on Johnstons PhD work) explores the experiences and strengths of Aboriginal mothers raising children affected by FASD.. At a practical level, this ethnographic study aims to demonstrate what it is like for mothers to raise teenagers who have FASD, what their struggles are, how they meet challenges, what is helpful, and what is not.. The paper also explores a range of issues using a postcolonial framework (for more on this, see earlier post Postcolonial Theory for Beginners, September 1, 2010). This perspective allows the study authors to explore intergenerational patterns related to parenting and FASD. The authors connect alcohol misuse during pregnancy to colonial pressures and effects that have continued to exist after seven generations.. …the root causes are undoubtedly related to the historical and collective emotional injury Aboriginal peoples have experienced as a result of ...

Nursing grand rounds (NGR) is a method to improve the nursing image and shed light on the process of developing professionalism in nursing. It aims at promoting evidence-based practice and offering an effective strategy to positively change patient care. In Iran, ground rounds is a relatively new concept; thus, there is little information about this strategy and its advantages and implementation. This study aimed to conduct an integrative review and classify the existing studies on NGR.The authors searched the keywords of ground rounds, nursing, and evidence-based practice in various databases including SID, Irandoc, Google Scholar, PubMed, Medline, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and ScienceDirect. Studies carried out between 2000 and 2019 fell within the scope of this study. The modified version of Coopers five-step approach to literature review was used to examine and integrate the existing NGR knowledge. These steps included problem identification, literature search, data evaluation (assessing the

Native American traffickers and independent dealers supply most illicit drugs available on reservations in the region. Most illicit drugs available on reservations in the region are transported and distributed by Native American traffickers and independent dealers, who obtain the drugs in cities near reservations. Many of these traffickers supply abusers on several reservations, transporting small quantities of diverted pharmaceuticals, multiounce quantities of commercial-grade marijuana, and gram quantities of cocaine to numerous Native American communities throughout the region. Additionally, some reservations in the region are experiencing a presence of local street gangs, such as Bloods, that are distributing illicit drugs at the retail level.. Some drug abusers engage in violent and property crime on reservations to support their drug habits. Law enforcement reporting indicates that drug abusers commit most routine criminal offenses on reservations in the New England Region. Abusers ...

PITTSBURGH (2 min read) - Research demonstrates the importance of perceptual-cognitive skills, such as pattern matching, anticipation, and decision making in sports.. Although there is a growing body of research demonstrating the trainability of perceptual-cognitive skills in sport and their transfer to the field, few researchers have attempted to translate this research into accessible and useful training tools for everyday coaches and athletes. In this research, an evaluation of one such tool in an applied setting was administered - a review of the experience of baseball players who were given access to a video-scenario-based training technology designed to improve pitch recognition and pitch location assessment training.. Using a naturalistic approach, a collegiate baseball team was equipped with Axon Sports simulation tool for training perceptual cognitive skill.. Players and coaches were permitted to use this tool at their own discretion. As an assessment of this tools validity, the ...
The aim of this paper is to reveal and discuss the methodological issues related to online qualitative consumer behavior research. A number of methodological issues are examined, related with the online qualitative research on consumer in-store emotional experience implemented by the authors. It is concluded that the Internet is becoming an increasingly attractive environment for consumer behavior research. A large part of scholars use the Internet as a medium for data collection and analysis. At the same time, researchers study the Internet as a source of information about consumer preferences, their virtual communities, prevailing relationships, traditions and attitudes. The Internet is analyzed as a phenomenon in itself, too. In this article, the Internet is analyzed as a tool for communicating with research participants, and collecting, storing and analyzing data. In general, qualitative inquiry is characterized by contextual and naturalistic approach to the study of objects and processes. ...
To sum up, after a century-long hiatus, a limited trend toward the reformulation of naturalistic approaches to Jesus resurrection has recently emerged. The hallucination and related subjective hypotheses are again the most popular among these approaches, as they were at the close of the nineteenth century. We have seen that these strategies have failed to explain the known, critically ascertained data on several fronts. Giving a total of 19 reasons, we have concluded that they fall far short in their attempt to provide an alternative to the New Testament proclamation. Clinical psychologist Gary Collins summarizes a few of the issues: Hallucinations are individual occurrences. By their very nature only one person can see a given hallucination at a time. They certainly are not something which can be seen by a group of people….Since an hallucination exists only in this subjective, personal sense, it is obvious that others cannot witness it.36. In fact, the problems with this thesis are so ...
Introduction. Are scientific models are useful, despite their inaccuracies? According to the British philosopher, Karl Popper, Science may be described as the art of systematic oversimplification. This concept is illustrated in our definition of scientific models, that is, a simplified abstract view of the complex reality. Models can greatly affect the knowledge in natural sciences, which is defined as the naturalistic approach to the study of the universe by obeying rules or laws of natural origin. One instance of this is Bohrs model of the atom. His model is useful: correctly teaching students about the correct locations of the electrons, protons and neutrons and so on. However, Dr. Ulrich Mller from Dordrecht opposes its usefulness. He argues that Bohrs model, in reality most models, involves the simplification process which removes the knowledge from its real referent. However, it can be seen that scientific models are useful, despite their inaccuracies. The representations of ...
A Hard Road before Them. 16 Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves. 17 But beware of men, for they will hand you over to the courts and scourge you in their synagogues; 18and you will even be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they hand you over, do not worry about how or what you are to say; for it will be given you in that hour what you are to say. 20 For it is not you who speak, but it is the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you. 21 Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 22 You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved. 23 But whenever they persecute you in one city, flee to the next; for truly I say to you, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes. Increasing prevalence of diabetes and hypertension are the two primary causes of end stage renal disease in major developing countries like China, Brazil and India and is also contributing to the growth of overall dialysis products and services market. According to the American Kidney Fund, diabetes and hypertension are responsible for 38.4% and 25% of all cases of kidney failures, respectively. Similarly, increasing geriatric population and low preference by patients above 65 years of age to opt for kidney ...
Sept. 10, 2019] SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The California Assembly passed a bill Sept. 10 to address runaway costs and rein in a profiteering scheme involving the dialysis and addiction treatment industries, and it now heads to Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has until Oct. 13 to decide whether to sign it into law.. Passage of this bill moves California one step closer to protecting patients access to care without inflating the profits of shadowy healthcare corporations, said Assembymember Jim Wood (D-Santa Rosa), the author of AB 290. This kind of accountability is long overdue.. The bill, which passed the California State Senate Sept. 9, is supported by Health Access California, the California Labor Federation, SEIU California, California Association of Health Plans, and the Association of California Life and Health Insurance Companies.. Currently, some drug rehabilitation facilities and a dialysis industry-funded charity, known as the American Kidney Fund, pay health plan premiums on behalf of their ...
My talk was about how kidney exchange has made a lot of progress, and become a standard part of transplantation, but that theres still room for it to grow and help more patients get transplants. In that regard I focused on two recent initiatives, starting a non-directed donor chain with a deceased donor kidney, and global kidney exchange to bring developing world patient-donor pairs into American kidney exchange to the mutual benefit of both kinds of pairs ...

For centuries, it did not matter much because medical types did medicine and forensic types did administration and law. Now, however, we have medicine beholden to mulyiple administrative entities, and to government and the results are disastrous and getting worse. This is why all the talk about healthcare reform is so futile; because it does not resolve the irresolvable cultural conflict between the players. The solution is to return healthcare to the healthcare providers. However, we live in a time of profound distrust of authority figures. (Wow! We made it full circle to the original topic of paternalism, didnt we!) And so, because a lot people do not trust the medical experts who know how to provide the care that is needed, we will get more and more administrative, legal, and governmental incursions into medicine (all in the name of fixing the broken system), worse care, and lots of otherwise smart people who never figure out that they are sending medicine straight to Hell even as they do ...
TOPIC: Self-Discovery and Cultural Models of Identity In this section of L141 we will be concerned with the theme of self-discovery, particularly in connection with models of identity in situations of cultural conflict. Some of the books we read will be autobiographies, and some will be works of fiction. All of the readings deal in one way or another with the process of self-definition. As I see it, we are all inevitably involved ourselves in some version of this process, and so we stand to gain insight into the shape of our own lives from a heightened awareness of the forms this process takes in the lives of others, real or imaginary. To what extent are we free to shape ourselves and our lives as we wish? To what extent is our sense of self determined by culture and its institutions? These are some of the larger issues that we will explore during the course of the semester. The reading list will include most or all of the following titles: Malcolm X, THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOLM X; Lucy ...

The processing of emotional faces and bodies has been associated with brain regions related to empathic responding in interpersonal contexts. The aim of the present EEG study was to investigate differences in the time course underlying the processing of bodies and faces showing neutral, happy or angry expressions. The P100 and N170 were analyzed in response to the presentation of bodies and faces. Stimuli were presented either from a perspective facing the observer directly or being averted by 45 degrees to manipulate the degree to which the participants had the impression of being involved in a dyadic interpersonal interaction. Participants were instructed to identify the emotional expression (neutral, happy or angry) by pressing the corresponding button. The result pattern mirrored poorer behavioral performance for averted relative to frontal stimuli. P100 amplitudes were enhanced and latencies shorter for averted relative to frontal bodies, while P100 and N170 components were additionally affected by

Based on examples drawn from tape recordings of two middle-class, dual-career White couples with children who audiotaped their own interactions for a week, I examined how family members mediate interpersonal interaction by speaking as, to, or about pet dogs who are present in the interaction. Analysis demonstrates that dogs become resources by which speakers effect a frame shift to a humorous key, buffer criticism, deliver praise, teach values to a child, resolve potential conflict with a spouse, and create a family identity that includes the dogs as family members. In this analysis, I contribute to an understanding of framing in interaction, including the relevance of Bakhtins (1981) notion of polyvocality for conversational discourse and demonstrate how family members use pets as resources to mediate their interactions while constituting and reinforcing their identity as a family. ...
Mental illness definition is - any of a broad range of medical conditions (such as major depression, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, or panic disorder) that are marked primarily by sufficient disorganization of personality, mind, or emotions to impair normal psychological functioning and cause marked distress or disability and that are typically associated with a disruption in normal thinking, feeling, mood, behavior, interpersonal interactions, or daily functioning. How to use mental illness in a sentence.
Sustainability is all about balancing social, economic and environmental needs, and as sustainability professionals this is an ethos that usually permeates our home lives as well as professional. It is an increasingly mainstreamed way of thinking - which is good, because as well as being the best way to bring about the change in behaviour our planet needs, it also means us crusaders get to stop being the friend that will always glare at you for using an unnecessary straw in the pub or the colleague that will helpfully remind you about the SDGs at any given opportunity.. Over the last couple of decades, sustainability in HE and FE has seen a shift, from a primarily environment focus, to a wider understanding of the need for progression in all areas of sustainability. A particularly big change of focus in the last decade has been mental health and well-being, its importance, and how to have a good work (or study)/life balance.. Most of us had this pretty well sussed (with obvious room for ...
Nobodys Mother is mostly written from a upper-middle class, middle-aged, white, straight perspective. There is one essay from a lesbian, and one from a Native North American. I was hoping for a few more younger voices, because a common issue that child-free women have, is not being taken seriously if theyre pre-menopausal. I had the same issue in asking for a tubal ligation (which I didnt get, by the way). I was 30-years old, and still got the you might change your mind speech, accompanied by the what if your partner wants children? question. (My response? Clearly, Im not the partner for them, then.) The majority of the essays are women looking back on how and why the came to be child-free, by choice, happenstance, lack of opportunity, etc. Theres nothing wrong with this approach, but it makes the book read more like Dropped Threads than a political work, which is something I was hoping for. To give the publisher credit, theres no hint that the book is all that political, but a girl ...
Given the extraordinary circumstance of a pandemic requiring laboratory testing for quality care while all available tests are approved only as EUAs, the question of how to perform an adequate test validation (compatible with the standard of care quality standards set by the College of American Pathologists would be expected to arise; this is particularly the case given that reagent and personal protective equipment (PPE) shortages would severely limit the number of validation tests that could be performed.7 For the regional northeastern United States VAMC, two reverse transcriptase PCR assays for testing were brought for clinical use including one test with a rapid turnaround time, the Xpert Xpress SARS-CoV-2 assay by Cepheid (Sunnyvale, California, USA), along with the Abbott RealTime SARS-CoV-2 assay by Abbott (Abbott Park, Ill) to handle the bulk of the testing within 24 hours. The rationale was to choose one rapid testing platform for critical needs, despite reagent limitations, and another ...
My last series of IG blood test results have been in this range: 266, 222, 259, 362, 625, 507. You can see that the results have trended higher, so the frequency of the IVIGs may lessen over time, so my primary oncologist says. I am now almost 10 years post an alloSCT and more than 11 years post the DX with MCL, blastoid type. As for prevention and remedies sought to limit the frequency of these infusions, we try to avoid exposure to crowds, public transportation (of course), and exposure to sick people, family or otherwise when we know illness is present. Retirement since 2010 gives us some options in this regard. In the main, though, we are grateful for the IVIGs when needed and find that this is our only maintenance therapy for remission at this time ...

Behold, the Lord rideth upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Egypt: and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence, and the heart of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it. And I will set the Egyptians against the Egyptians: and they shall fight every one against his brother, and every one against his neighbour; city against city, and kingdom against kingdom. And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards. And the Egyptians will I give over into the hand of a cruel lord; and a fierce king shall rule over them, saith the Lord, the Lord of hosts.(Isaiah 19:1-4). The words come from Florence Nightingale but are appropriate to recent findings highlighted in a post: The HSCIC report of the Personal Social Services Adult Social Care Survey, England 2014-15 showed that whilst 64 %, that is 43,638 of the 68,185 people surveyed, felt that they had all the food and drink they wanted when they wanted it, ....... 1%, that is 681 people receiving social care, said that they did not always get enough food. This to the extent that they thought there was a risk to their health. Statistics can be made to say almost anything. And 1% in any survey might appear insignificant; 681 hungry people is not. . The post goes on to talk about a person centred approach to the use of a dementia care map and the importance of paying attention to people who are no bother because they will have needs that you wont see unless you pay attention. The Care2Improve surveys let care users whether at home or in a care home, and their relatives answer specific questions about their food, ...
A couple of weeks later, my husband stepped out on faith, quit his job, and drove 27 hours to be with us in Arizona. His drive was a bit more stressful than mine because he was tasked with bringing the rest of our belongings. While I had my doubts, I can admit when I was wrong. He did a great job with the huge task I had given him! We were 1000% uncomfortable with the idea of him having to quit his job without already having another job lined up, but it was the only way to be together. Im sure youve heard to saying good things come to those who wait for it? In our case, good things came to us because we were willing to bet on each other! Mutual trust and respect are a pillar in our marriage. Since I had been in school for the majority of our marriage, Brad had always been the breadwinner. When we realized that we were actually going to close on this house, we had to have a serious conversation about our moving plan. Naturally, Brad wanted to come with us for closing and we would all move into ...
One situation that always makes me laugh when I remember it (although it was certainly unnerving to the family at the time), was when our friends son with CP was at a private school picnic, and another little boy just wouldnt stop staring. The dad, a huge ex-football player looked right at the staring kid and said, Can I help you, Johnny? You see something interesting, Johnny? What do you need, Johnny? The poor kid finally broke his stare and shrunk away in complete intimidation. The special needs parents were pretty upset too. In retrospect, the dad couldnt believe he had, with all his imposing physique, asserted himself like that. While we chuckle now, I wouldnt exactly recommend coming on that strong with others. Rather, when dealing with curious people, if you have the strength, ask them if there are any questions you might answer for them. A response that might work could be something like, I cant help but notice that you are looking at my son/daughter. He/she is a pretty remarkable ...
