TY - JOUR. T1 - Influence of nicotine on tissue trace element concentrations and tissue antioxidant defense. AU - Dubick, Michael A.. AU - Keen, Carl L. PY - 1991/11. Y1 - 1991/11. N2 - Both altered trace element metabolism and cigaret smoking have been proposed to be risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Thus, it is important to identify the mechanisms by which cigaret smoke alters trace element metabolism. In the present study, serum trace element concentrations were measured in 19 smokers and 13 nonsmokers. In parallel studies, data from rats treated with 50 mg of nicotine over a 21-d period tested the hypothesis that nicotine induced altered trace element metabolism observed in smokers. Serum Cu and Zn concentrations were significantly higher in smokers than in nonsmokers. Serum nicotine concentrations in rats were comparable to those observed in heavy smokers, but serum trace element concentrations were not significantly altered by nicotine treatment. Tissue trace element ...
Background: Hemodialysis (HD) patients are at risk of developing trace element imbalances. Methods: The 12 trace elements Cd, Co, Cs, Cu, La, Mg, Mo, Pb, Rb, Sr, Tl and Zn were determined in the plasma (n = 52) of 6 chronic HD patients before and after HD sessions by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Plasma trace element concentrations were monitored for 6 months. Baseline data have been compared to the concentrations at the end of the observation period to identify a potential reduction or accumulation of trace elements in HD patients. Results: Plasma Cd, Co and Pb levels were about 10 times higher than in healthy adults. Concentrations of Co and Pb increased during HD sessions, whereas plasma Co and Cd increased during the study period of 6 months. Plasma Cs, Mg, Mo and Rb continuously decreased in all patients. For plasma Cu and Zn, a statistically significant rise of their plasma concentrations during HD and during the period of 6 months could be established. Concentrations of La
Intimately intergrown micron-scale framboidal pyrite, carbonaceous material (CM), chalcopyrite, sphalerite and cobaltite form polyframboids in prehnite-pumpellyite facies rocks of the Otago Schist, New Zealand. This study quantifies the metal contents of these polyframboids using synchrotron X-ray fluorescence (SXRF) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Trace elements Au, Zn, As, Mo, Co, Ni, Cu, Ag and Pb are significantly enriched in the polyframboids. The distribution of Zn most closely follows that of CM, and was probably absorbed into the structure of the polyframboids during biogenic processes. The concentrations of Au and Ag are positively corrected with the Zn concentration in the polyframboids (R2 of Au-Zn and Ag-Zn are 0.81 and 0.89, respectively.). The concentration of other trace elements, such as As, Co and Cu, which occur adjacent to Zn on elemental maps, show a weak relationship with Zn and may have been incorporated into the polyframboids during ...
Access to reliable information on the elemental contents of the human body is crucial to understand the roles these elements may have in the maintenance of human health. Establishing trace element blood levels in a general population can help elucidate potential causes of diseases related to natural and anthropogenic sources of these elements; it can also provide a baseline for potential future biomonitoring that could assess and evaluate temporal changes in the trace element status in populations. For the toxic elements such population studies can provide an important source for considering the total exposure of such elements through food, water and air, and may thus warn us on potentially dangerous exposure or contamination. Several epidemiological studies have indicated that a number of trace elements may play a role in type 2 diabetes (T2D). To address the question on when anomalous levels of trace elements begin to appear in T2D development, one could measure trace elements levels in the ...
The Parys Mountain copper mining district (Anglesey, North Wales) hosts exposed pyritic bedrock, solid mine waste spoil heaps, and acid drainage (ochre sediment) deposits. Both natural and waste deposits show elevated trace element concentrations, including selenium (Se), at abundances of both economic and environmental consideration. Elevated concentrations of semi-metals such as Se in waste smelts highlight the potential for economic reserves in this and similar base metal mining sites. Selenium is sourced from the pyritic bedrock and concentrations are retained in red weathering smelt soils, but lost in bedrock-weathered soils and clays. Selenium correlates with Te, Au, Bi, Cd, Hg, Pb, S, and Sb across bedrock and weathered deposits. Man-made mine waste deposits show enrichment of As, Bi, Cu, Sb, and Te, with Fe oxide-rich smelt materials containing high Pb, up to 1.5 wt %, and Au contents, up to 1.2 ppm. The trace elements As, Co, Cu, and Pb are retained from bedrock to all sediments, including high
A total of 60 products of traditional herbal medicine (THM) in various dosage forms of herbal preparation were analyzed to determine selected trace elements (i.e., Zn, Mn, Cu, Cd, and Se) using ICP-MS. Thirty types of both Chinese and Malay THMs were chosen to represent each population. The closed vessel acid microwave digestion method, using CEM MARS 5, was employed for the extraction of the selected trace elements. The digestion method applied was validated by using certified reference material from the Trace Element in Spinach Leaves (SRM1570a). The recoveries of all elements were found to be in the range of 85.3%-98.9%. The results indicated that Zn, Mn, Cu, Cd and Se have their own trends of concentrations in all samples studied. The daily intake concentrations of the elements were in the following order: Mn > Zn > Cu > Se > Cd. Concentrations of all five elements were found to be dominant in Chinese THMs. The essentiality of the selected trace elements was also assessed, based on the

Trace elements (TE) are known to play a crucial role in microbial metabolism, and to improve biogas output in anaerobic digestion (AD), although the mechanisms are not well characterised. We have characterised the microbial communities associated with anaerobic mono-digestion of grass silage through initiation, stable operation, inhibition at high organic loading rates, and rescue through addition of trace elements (iron, nickel and cobalt). Comparison of these communities with communities from unsupplemented anaerobic co-digestion of a grass silage:slurry mix shows TE supplementation to be significantly associated with increases in genera known to be involved in the metabolism of volatile fatty acids (Gelria, Anaerovorax, Dethiobacter), hydrolysis (Clostridia), and in particular the uncharacterised clostridial order MBA03. However, a decrease was seen in the abundance of methanogenic Archaea, indicating TE supplementation improves mono-digestion of grass silage through augmented fermentation rather

The distribution of salinity and selected trace elements in shallow ground water in the Tulare Basin, California, was assessed to evaluate potential problems related to disposal in evaporation ponds of irrigation drain water containing elevated concentrations of selenium and other trace elements. The constituents of primary concern were selenium, arsenic, and salinity; uranium, boron, and molybdenum also were evaluated. Samples from 117 shallow wells were analyzed, and the results for samples from 110 of the wells were interpreted in relation to surficial geology, sediment depositional environment, soil characteristics, and hydrologic processes to determine the geochemical and hydrologic factors affecting the distribution of these constituents in ground water. In general, shallow ground water in areas where concentrations of salinity and most trace elements are elevated is influenced primarily by sediments derived from marine sedimentary rocks originating in the Coast Range, San Emigdio Mountains, and
Even though the original collision/reaction cell ICP-MS was developed for trace element analysis of marine water samples, it is easily adapted to new tasks such as the determination of metal body burdens of marine mammals. As part of the monitoring of the health status of marine mammals, trace element levels in blood and tissue samples are under investigation, using ICP-MS for a reliable multi-element screening. The concentrations of selected elements were measured in fresh whole blood samples of 80 harbour seals, captured at three different locations of the German and Danish Wadden Sea. ...

Bone-Fluoride Content in Fluoridated Areas Associated with Bone Defects in Kidney Patients. Trace elements are known to influence bone metabolism; however, their effects may be exacerbated in renal failure because dialysis patients are unable to excrete excess elements properly. Our study correlated bone quality in dialysis patients with levels of bone fluoride, magnesium, and aluminum. A number of studies have linked trace elements, including fluoride, magnesium, and aluminum, to the development of renal osteodystrophy (ROD). However, little is known about the relationship between trace elements and changes in bone quality in ROD patients. The purpose of this study was to examinebone quality in ROD patients, and correlate differences in bone quality to trace element concentrations in bone. Bone quality ...
Soil, plant and water samples from Ghana were analysed by inductively coupled plasma--mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to ascertain the impact of gold mining on soil chemistry and grain quality. Principal component analysis (PCA) of soil trace element concentrations showed that while As, Co, Cu and Zn are the main trace elements influencing variability, As poses a more serious pollution threat compared to all other elements considered in this study. Soils from the Anum Valley Irrigation Project (AVIP) site at Odumase, located close to the old Konongo gold mine in the Ashanti region, contained up to 103 mg As/kg and paddy rice from this site recorded the highest grain As content (0.6 mg/kg) for Ghana grown rice. Results from water analysis indicate that surface run-offs from abandoned mine tailings into the paddy irrigation water (River Owerri) constitute the primary source of As pollution at the AVIP-Odumase site. Comparison of soil-shoot-grain As transfer in Ghana and Bangladesh grown rice showed ...

abstractNote = {Periodic samples of bracken taken during the growing season have shown that the concentration of major elements (except calcium and sodium) decreases with age in fronds, and remains relatively constant in rhizomes, whereas trace-element concentration varies widely. Soil type has little effect on the mineral composition of fronds. Examination of three rhizome types revealed no wide differences in the content of major elements; pinnules generally contained higher concentrations of major and trace elements than fronds. Comparison of results with those published elsewhere for moorland plants grown under similar conditions indicates that bracken contains more potassium and less molybdenum ...

JANKA Zoltán. [Trace elements are found in the living organism in small (trace) amounts and are mainly essential for living functions. Essential trace elements are in humans the chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), fluorine (F), iodine (I), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), and questionably the boron (B) and vanadium (V). According to the biopsychosocial concept, mental functions have biological underpinnings, therefore the impairment of certain neurochemical processes due to shortage of trace elements may have mental consequences. Scientific investigations indicate the putative role of trace element deficiency in psychiatric disorders such in depression (Zn, Cr, Se, Fe, Co, I), premenstrual dysphoria (Cr), schizophrenia (Zn, Se), cognitive deterioration/de-mentia (B, Zn, Fe, Mn, Co, V), mental retardation (I, Mo, Cu), binge-eating (Cr), autism (Zn, Mn, Cu, Co) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (Fe). For a comparative study of plasma copper, iron and zinc between anaemic and non-anaemic pregnant women, data for anaemic (n = 223) and non-anaemic (n = 126) pregnant women drawn from a cohort of 351 pregnant Nigerians recruited at gestational age of ≤ 25 weeks for the study of impacts of trace element status on pregnancy outcomes were analysed. With the exception of plasma copper which was significantly (p , 0.05) higher in anaemic women in comparison to the non-anaemic women (10.11 ± 10.15 vs. 8.68 ± 7.92 µmol/l), plasma iron and zinc were lower (p , 0.05) in the former. While plasma copper, iron and zinc concentration were not correlated with maternal haemoglobin concentration, plasma zinc significantly correlated negatively (r = -0.141, p , 0.05) with plasma copper. It is thus concluded that anaemia in pregnant women in this population may partly be due to a combination of trace element deficiencies and their interactions with each other. While interventions should go beyond improving ...

Acidobacteria represents one of the most dominant bacterial groups across diverse ecosystems. However, insight into their ecology and physiology has been hampered by difficulties in cultivating members of this phylum. Previous cultivation efforts have suggested an important role of trace elements for the proliferation of Acidobacteria, however, the impact of these metals on their growth and metabolism is not known. In order to gain insight into this relationship, we evaluated the effect of trace element solution SL10 on the growth of two strains (5B5 and WH15) of Acidobacteria belonging to the genus Granulicella and studied the proteomic responses to manganese (Mn). Granulicella species had highest growth with the addition of Mn, as well as higher tolerance to this metal compared to seven other metal salts. Variations in tolerance to metal salt concentrations suggests that Granulicella sp. strains possess different mechanisms to deal with metal ion homeostasis and stress. Furthermore, Granulicella sp.

Gerga district contains different activities, urban, agriculture, and industry, which can impact adversely on the soil quality. Sixteen samples of the agricultural soil (0-30-cm depth) were collected to investigate the pollution of soil with trace elements (Co, Ni, Pb, and Mn). The statistical techniques were applied to discriminate the sources of these elements. The studied soil ranged from uncontaminated to moderately contaminated with the studied trace elements based on the contamination factor index. The statistical analyses indicated the anthropogenic source of Co, Ni, and Pb as well as the natural source of Mn. The statistical analyses assisted in the discrimination of natural and anthropogenic sources of trace elements in the investigated soil samples. Mn is mainly of natural origin, affected by pedogenic factor, whereas traffic emissions and phosphate fertilizer, as well as domestic activities, are relevant sources of Co, Ni, and Pb elements in the studied soil. Consequently, the recommendation

A team of researchers using the Advanced Photon Source, a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science User Facility at Argonne National Laboratory, demonstrated unparalleled sensitivity for measuring the distribution of trace elements in thicker specimens at cryogenic temperatures, in this case at about 260 degrees below Fahrenheit.. Trace metals are important in normal and disease-causing biological functions. Until now, researchers believe, it was impossible to obtain images of biological samples with such high combined structural and chemical fidelity.. X-ray fluorescence lets us see trace metals in cells with fantastic sensitivity, and ptychography lets us correlate that with cellular ultrastructure, said Junjing Deng, an applied physics graduate student at Northwestern University. Ptychography is an approach to obtain absorption and phase contrast images from scattered light with no lens-imposed resolution limit, making use of the overlap between multiple coherent illumination ...

Osteoporosis is a multifactorial disease with dimensions of genetics, endocrine function, exercise and nutritional considerations. Of particular considerations are calcium (Ca) status, Vitamin D, fluoride, magnesium and other trace elements. Several trace elements, particularly copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn), are essential in bone metabolism as cofactors for specific enzymes. Our investigations regarding the role of Cu, Mn and Zn in bone metabolism include data from studies with animals on Cu- and Mn-deficient diets. We have also demonstrated cellular deficiencies using bone powder implants, as well as fundamental changes in organic matrix constituents. In clinical studies we have demonstrated the efficacy of Ca, Cu, Mn and Zn supplementation on spinal bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. Each of these studies demonstrated the necessity of trace elements for optimal bone matrix development and bone density sustenance.. Saltman PD, Strause ...

The variation of baseline levels of uranium in soil and stream sediments over Europe is described, based on new data prepared by the Forum of European Geological Surveys. The samples have been collected and analysed according to international protocols. The baseline levels of U vary between 0.21 to 53 mg kg-1 in topsoils, 0.19 to 30 mg kg-1 in subsoils and ,1 to 59 mg kg-1 in stream sediments. There is generally good agreement between the levels of U in the three sample types, and the median concentration in all three media is approximately 2 mg kg-1. The most anomalous baseline levels occur over the Variscan orogen, especially areas into which late postorogenic radiothermal high heat production granites were emplaced. Spider diagrams based on trace element levels and REE plots, confirm the association between the highest U anomalies and evolved radiothermal granites. High values are also associated with parts of the Alpine terrain especially in Slovenia, where there are historical U workings, ...

Exposure to air pollution has been shown to adversely affect foetal development in the case of pregnant women. The present study aims to investigate the PM composition and sources influencing personal exposure of pregnant women in Barcelona. To this end, indoor, outdoor and personal exposure measurements were carried out for a selection of 54 pregnant women between November 2008 and November 2009. PM2.5 samples were collected during two consecutive days and then analysed for black smoke (BS), major and trace elements, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) concentrations. Personal information such as commuting patterns and cosmetics use was also collected. PM2.5 concentrations were higher for personal samples than for indoor and outdoor environments. Indoor, outdoor and personal BS and sulphate concentrations were strongly correlated, although some specific indoor and outdoor sulphate sources may exist. Average trace elements concentrations were similar indoor, outdoor and for personal ...
1] The spatial and temporal variability of chemical signals in lavas, residues, and melt inclusions provides important constraints on source heterogeneity, the efficiency of convection, and melt transport processes in the mantle. The past decade has seen an impressive increase in the number, precision, and spatial resolution of chemical analyses. However, as resolution has increased, the picture of variation that emerges has become increasingly difficult to understand. For example, mid-ocean ridge basalts can display large variations in trace element concentration on scales from 1000 km of ridge to melt inclusions in 500 micron crystals. These observations suggest that melt transport processes do not readily homogenize partially molten regions. While some of the observed variability is due to source variations, a large proportion could be the consequence of magma transport in channelized systems. We present results of numerical models that calculate the trace element signatures of high-porosity ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Putative role of dietary trace elements in coronary heart-disease and cancer. AU - Strain, JJ. PY - 1994/9. Y1 - 1994/9. N2 - Relatively little attention has been given to the role of dietary trace elements in oxidative processes or in the aetiologies of chronic disease processes. Iron and copper are pro-oxidants in vitro, but there is now compelling evidence that adequate body copper status is required to maintain antioxidant defences in vivo. Epidemiological evidence linking measures of high iron nutritional status with both coronary heart disease (CHD) and cancer is accumulating, although there are few mechanisms implicating iron in these disease processes apart from acting as a pro-oxidant. In contrast, low copper nutritional status may produce pro-oxidant effects and experimental evidence, especially from animal models of CHD, suggests that copper has an involvement in disease mechanisms which is much wider than simply an involvement in maintaining oxidant/antioxidant ...

Deep ocean minerals (DOM) are mineral nutrients (chemical elements) extracted from deep ocean water (DOW) found at ocean depths of between 250 and 1500 meters. DOW contains over 70 mineral nutrients and trace elements including magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca) and potassium (K) in their bio ionic form. To extract these products, DOW is treated with micro filtration and reverse osmosis to desalinate and concentrate magnesium, other minerals and trace elements whilst eliminating the salt (sodium chloride). Although research about DOM is in its early stages, as it is a source of electrolytes that can help metabolize carbohydrate, proteins and fat plus maintain bone, teeth and muscle function, health benefits are possible. The abundance of minerals and trace elements is also of note as deficiencies in macro minerals and micro trace elements can lead to premature aging, immune dysfunction and susceptibility to cardiovascular related diseases. The minerals and trace elements (DOM) present in DOW have ...

Chelates ( che·late ) [kee-leyt] in animal feed are organic forms of essential trace minerals such as copper, iron, manganese and zinc. Animals absorb, digest and use mineral chelates better than inorganic minerals. This means that lower concentrations can be used in animal feeds. In addition, animals fed chelated sources of essential trace minerals excrete lower amounts in their faeces, and so there is less environmental contamination. Mineral chelates also offers health and welfare benefits in animal nutrition Since the 1950s, animal feeds have been supplemented with essential trace minerals such as copper (Cu), iron (Fe), iodine (I), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn). Initially, such supplementation was by means of inorganic salts of essential trace elements. From the 1960s onwards, genetic improvement of farm livestock resulted in increased nutritional requirements for these nutrients. Chelated minerals were developed in the 1980s and 1990s. Trace mineral chelates ...
Mg (p , 0.001) and Mn (p = 0.002) levels were significantly increased whereas Zn (p = 0.011) level was decreased in toenails of patients with onychomycosis compared to healthy subjects. Although Mg and Mn levels were higher in female subjects with onychomycosis (p = 0.001; p = 0.019), Mn was only increased in male subjects (p = 0.015). Mg was the only trace element found to be independent of sex, age, and smoking status in patients with onychomycosis. However, no significant difference has been found in serum trace element levels neither between any groups nor toenail trace element levels of patients with onychocryptosis and healthy subjects ...

Zinc deficiency can change the concentrations of minerals and trace elements in the body. However, previous studies still had many limitations. To reveal the effects of zinc deficiency on homeostasis of 16 minerals and trace elements. Forty-five rats were divided randomly into three groups: normal zinc diet (30 mg/kg), low zinc diet (10 mg/kg), and pair-fed diet(30 mg/kg). The concentrations of 16 minerals and trace elements in serum, feces, urine, and liver were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The excretion of 16 elements in urine and feces were calculated and compared. Zinc-deficient rats exhibited significant changes in up to 12 minerals and trace elements. The low zinc diet induced decreased excretion of zinc and concentrations of zinc in serum, feces, urine, and liver. Zinc deficiency increased feces concentrations of Mg, Cu, Se, K, Ag, Fe and Mn; decreased the concentrations of Mg, Cu, Se, K in liver and urine, and a diminished amount of Ag was observed in serum.
Treated wastewater reuse for irrigation has gained a greater significance as an alternative resource to meet the growing water demands for agriculture and reduce the pressure on limited existing fresh water. However, this reuse needs adapted management in order to avoid environmental and health risks. An experiment was conducted in a greenhouse to evaluate the effect of different irrigation methods on the Metallic Trace elements and metals concentrations of a Tunisian soil (pH = 8.6) and corn when using treated wastewater. Four irrigation methods: surface irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, drip irrigation and subsurface drip irrigation, and two water qualities were used: treated wastewater and fresh water. Samples of soil and corn were analyzed for several Metallic Trace elements. Results for soil showed that treated wastewater increased electrical conductivity, nutrients and metallic trace elements. The highest levels of salinity and Metallic Trace elements were recorded with using surface ...

The Late Cretaceous La Luna Formation is the main hydrocarbon source-rock formation in Venezuela. In the Lake Maracaibo area, the formation shows a steep maturation gradient affecting sedimentary organic matter (OM) and clay minerals, related to local burial history and thrusting events. The influence of the gradient is examined through geochemical (organic and inorganic) and mineralogical investigations carried out on samples from five cored boreholes in the Maracaibo Basin. The analytical procedure comprises Rock Eval pyrolysis, vitrinite reflectance measurement, palynofacies observation, major- and trace-element content determination, performed on bulk-rock samples or after a sequential leach protocol (DOP calculation) and the examination and analysis of clay-mineral assemblages. The maturation gradient seems to have had no effect upon the distribution of the trace elements referred to as proxy indicators for palaeodepositional conditions of OM-rich sediments (Ba, P, V, Mo, Ni, Co, Cu, Cd, Cr and Mn)
Copper is an important trace element that plays a very important role in the biochemistry of all living organisms and affects enzymes activity as a cofactor or as a fundamental structure of many metalloenzymes as superoxide dismutase, ceruloplasmin, lysyl oxidase, cytochrome oxidase and tyrosinase. Therefore copper is essential for cellular respiration, free radical defence, neurotransmitter function connective and tissue biosynthesis. Excessive copper accumulation is toxic in all species as it leads to hepatic cirrhosis, hemolytic anemia and degeneration of basal ganglia. The aim of this review is to give a view on the health issue surrounding copper and animal health including many interested points about copper and fetal maternal relationship, the role of copper in the different body system and the effect of its deficiency and toxicity, as well as focusing on the relationship of copper with other trace elements, metalloenzymes, immunity and DNA.. Key words: Copper, animal, health ...
A 15 month survey was carried out into the distributions of trace metals, trace organics and nitrogen species in particulate and rainwater samples collected from the atmosphere over the southern North Sea. This is the first time a comprehensive and reliable data-set of this kind has been obtained for a coastal region from collections made at sea. Trace metals. There is a south-north decrease in the emission of trace metals to the atmosphere from the land masses surrounding the North Sea. ´End-member` aerosol trace metal concentrations have been identified for the three major source regions; i.e. continental Europe, U.K. and the open-sea, and indicate that, in general, aerosols from air masses which have crossed continental Europe are richer in some trace metals (e.g. Zn and Pb) than those from air masses which have crossed the U.K. There are short-term variations in the concentrations of trace metals in aerosols over the North Sea; however, on an integrated long-term basis the concentrations ...
Vitamins are a team of chemicals that are required to preserve the typical feature of all living microorganisms. The body can manufacture most vitamins, however some vitamins are naturally manufactured in the body from various other sources. Several of these vitamins are fat soluble, which means that they float with the bloodstream as well as are carried away in waste type when the food is eaten. Other vitamins are water soluble, which indicates that they are kept in the cell membranes and require to be delivered to the parts of the body where they are needed.. A vitamin is an important trace element that a microorganism calls for in little to modest amounts for its appropriate functioning. All minerals and vitamins are insoluble in water therefore has to be absorbed the food that they are eaten. They are additionally split right into two primary groups: macrominerals as well as trace element. The major minerals and vitamins that are considering trace element are riboflavin, pantothenic acid, ...
A technique has been developed to minimize matrix effects in urine for the estimation of trace elements by atomic absorption spectrophotometer using Flame or electro thermal atomization. The matrix and pH effects are known to change the absorption. This study may be useful for the determination of trace elements in the absence of standard/certified reference materials of urine. Our interest was the determination of trace elements in urine. For this purpose a standard urine solution was made up for the estimation of elements. At least 3-5 standard calibration curves were taken for each element. Percentage recoveries were also determined and found satisfactory. The following percentage recoveries for different elements were found; Ca (101.5 %), Mg (102.9 %), Fe (101.6 %), Zn (102.8 %), Cu (99.05 %), Cr (100.6 %) and for Ni (105.3 %).The same elements in aqueous standards were also determined against the above calibration curves to see if they could be used instead of the stock standards. The ...

During an almost seven-year follow-up period, elderly healthy Swedish citizens with low serum selenium concentrations had significantly increased cardiovascular mortality and total mortality rates compared to contemporaries with higher serum selenium concentrations. Specifically, there was a 56% increased risk for cardiovascular mortality and a 43% increased risk for all-cause mortality. Accordingly, the Swedish researchers suggested that selenium supplementation should be recommended to all Swedish citizens with a serum selenium concentration below 57 micrograms per liter [Alehagen 2016].. In fact, Professor Urban Alehagen and his team of researchers at Linköping University pointed out that the average serum selenium concentrations observed in the study of elderly Swedish citizens - 67.1 micrograms per liter - is not sufficient to achieve optimal function of the important selenoproteins that require selenium as a component [Alehagen 2016]: read more ...
I was informed that Dr. Catherine Orsoni has retired. Yes, she wrote a book on using trace elements to treat cataract, although I don t have it. I was told her work on trace elements is being continued by Dr. Boris Rysanek, but his profile says he is a cataract surgeon and a retinal specialist. Possibly, he is using trace elements to treat retinal diseases, but probably not cataract. Of course, over the last century, many people have indeed been working hard to treat cataract, but if you look at who they were, nearly all of them were biochemical researchers and none were ophthalmologis ...
The proximate compositions were estimated using compositional analysis of Association of Official Analytical Chemists, while the mineral element contents were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Analysis of variance shows that there is significant difference (p<0.05) in the proximate compositions of the rice varieties studied (Sipi>Faro14>Awilo>Faro15>Canada). No significant difference (p>0.05) exists in sodium, phosphorous, calcium and magnesium contents of the rice varieties studied. There is significant difference (p<0.05) in nitrogen (Canada > (Awilo, Faro15)>Sipi>Faro14) and potassium (Canada>Sipi>Awilo>Faro15>Faro14). Canada and Faro 14 varieties should get more attentions among other varieties in terms of proximate and mineral compositions. The result of this study can be exploited by rice consumers and also rice farmers in Abakaliki and its environs in their choices regarding mineral and proximate compositions.  Key words:

Objective: Classical phenylketonuria (PKU) is an inborn error of metabolism characterized by high Phenylalanine (Phe) levels in blood and treated with a special low Phe diet which can be defined as nonatherogenic. Since coronary heart disease (CHD) was reported to be a disease of zinc and copper imbalance, we aimed indirectly to evaluate the effect of the special diet on the size of LDL particles and to investigate whether some minerals and trace elements are involved in their lipoprotein metabolism. Methods: Eighty-six (N=86) PKU patients were divided into two groups. Group A (N=44) on a strict diet and group B (N=42) who did not adhere to their treatment. Healthy children (N=98) were the controls. Serum total cholesterol (t-Chol), triacylglycerol, High-density lipoprotein (HDL) and t-Chol in very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) were measured with enzymatic methods, whereas Apolipoprotein AI (Apo AI), Apolipoprotein AII (Apo AII) and Apolipoprotein B (Apo B) ...

Some of the El Palenques population moved to Cerro Tilcajete, which is located on the top of a ridge, some 300 m above the level of the valley floor. In 1994, Charles Spencer and Elsa Redmond mapped and surface collected Cerro Tilcajete. The material from the surface collections indicates that the site was occupied during Monte Albán II (100 BC - 200 AD) and Monte Albán IIIB-IV (AD 500-1000). Between 1999-2003, Christina Elson directed the excavation of a palace, a two-room temple, and an elite residence, all situated around Cerro Tilcajetes small Period II plaza. In addition, a low-status house located on a terrace 260 m away from the plaza was excavated. A radiocarbon date from the platform sustaining the palace was 130 AD + 60. Based on this date and on the associated ceramic material, it can be said with confidence site was first occupied in the Monte Albán II Period when it functioned as a secondary center for the Ocotlán-Zimatlán region.. ...

OBJECTIVE. Recent studies have reported that antioxidant status, including serum selenium concentrations, is altered in women who develop preeclampsia. We wished to examine the effects of selenium supplementation in the prevention of preeclampsia in high-risk pregnant women.. DESIGN. We carried out a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial. A total of 166 primigravid pregnant women, who were in the first trimester of pregnancy, were randomized to receive 100 microg of selenium (n = 83; dropouts, n = 22) or a placebo (n = 83; dropouts, n = 19) per day until delivery. The incidence of preeclampsia, serum selenium concentrations, lipid profile and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein status were evaluated at baseline and at the end of the study.. RESULTS. Supplementation with selenium was not associated with any reported major side effects and was associated with a significant increase in mean serum selenium concentrations at term (p , 0.001). In contrast, mean serum selenium ...
Crossbred heifers (n=19) were used to determine the effects of feeding Cu, Co, Mn and Zn in amounts greater than recommended by the NRC on ovarian function. Heifers were fed hay ad libitum and individually fed a control (n=9) or trace mineral (n=10) supplement for 109 days. Dry-matter intake, average daily gain, day luteal phase began, length of luteal phase, daily mean progesterone production, follicular phase estradiol production and first wave dominant follicle size were not affected by mineral supplementation. However, heifers in the treatment group had fewer large follicles during the early portion of the estrous cycle.
The predominant forms of trace minerals available for supplementation typically are categorized as either inorganic or organic, with primary reference to their chemical structure. Common inorganic sources are metals with ionic bonds and fed as oxides or sulfates. More recently, inorganic forms that contain covalent bonds of the metals with chloride (e.g., tribasic copper chloride; Spears et al., 2004) have become available and are commonly referred to as hydroxy forms. Various forms of organic trace minerals are available in which metals are chelated, complexed, or covalently bonded to AA, AA analogues, proteins, or organic acids, among other organic compounds. Most research conducted using these various forms has focused on either partial or full replacement of either sulfates or oxides with one of the other forms with potentially greater bioavailability (Spears, 2003). Although some research (described previously within the discussion for individual trace minerals) has been conducted using ...

It is important for us to know that the more chemical additives are contained in food, the less beneficial it is for our health. These chemical additives are used to add flavour, colour or aroma to the food and even a longer shelf life. The E code has been instituted by the European Union to indicate the presence of an approved particular chemical additive. Independent of whether the E trace elements are approved by the European Union, the more products we use that contain the E elements, the more we burden our health, especially if we consume them on a daily basis. The catalogue below is indicative and we hope that it will make us all more careful us consumers: we need to look very carefully at the ingredients of the products to be sure that they do not contain E elements ...

Alexander Speers Zircon chapter in Orthosilicates (Reviews in Mineralogy, Vol. 5), much has been learned about the internal textures, trace-element and isotope geochemistry (both radiogenic and stable) and chemical and mechanical stability of zircon. The application of this knowledge and the use of zircon in geologic studies have become widespread. Today, the study of zircon exists as the pseudo-discipline of zirconology that involves materials scientists and geoscientists from across a range of sub-disciplines including stable and radiogenic isotopes, sedimentology, petrology, trace elements and experimental mineralogy. Zirconology has become an important field of research, so much so that coverage of the mineral zircon in a review volume that included zircon as one of many accessory minerals would not meet the needs or interests of the zirconology community in terms of depth or breadth of ...

Your body needs vitamins and minerals and a healthy diet is one that contains most of the essential nutrients including trace minerals. A trace mineral is one that is needed by the body in small amounts, an example of which is zinc. Zinc is present in all the cells in your body and there are a number of reasons why it is important.. There are enzymes in the body and for them to function correctly, they need zinc. Zinc also keeps the proteins in your body stable. It helps maintain cell membranes and controls how the cells function. Zinc also plays an important role in the functioning of your nervous system. Aside from these, there are many other health benefits of zinc. These include fighting gastric ulcers, managing diabetes, reducing symptoms associated with sickle cell anemia, managing Wilsons disease and treatment of acne vulgaris.. Because zinc offers so many health benefits and because it is an essential trace element, it is worth knowing which foods contains the highest levels of zinc. ...
