Approximately 60% of patients presenting to dentists with erosive tooth wear have significant gastroesophageal reflux (GERD), despite minor reflux symptoms. No longitudinal studies of reflux-associated erosive tooth wear and of reflux characteristics have been reported to date. The aim of this study was to characterize the longitudinal course of GERD and of associated erosive tooth wear, as well as factors predictive of its progression, in a large group of patients. Seventy-two patients presenting to dentists with clinically significant erosive tooth wear and increased esophageal acid exposure by 24-h multichannel intraluminal pH-impedance measurement (MII-pH) were re-assessed clinically and by MII-pH after 1 year treatment with esomeprazole 20 mg twice-daily. Predictive factors for erosive tooth wear were assessed by logistic regression. At follow-up, no further progression in erosive tooth wear was observed in 53 (74%) of patients. The percentage of time with a pH | 4, the number of acid reflux

The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence and severity of erosive tooth wear (ETW) and its association with dental caries and the use of psychoactive substances among Finnish prisoners. One hundred voluntary prisoners (90.9%) from the Pelso Prison participated in this cross-sectional clinical study between September 2014 and February 2015. Fifty prisoners were also interviewed using the one-on-one interviewing technique for their background factors and use of psychoactive substances. Basic Erosive Index (BEWE) (0-18) was used to measure erosive tooth wear. Decayed (D), missing (M), filled (F) and the number of remaining teeth (T) and DMFT were reported. The association between the different variables was tested and analysed by using cross tabulation. To test the association between the variables a logistic regression analysis was conducted. Almost all (90%) of the subjects had need for preventive and operative treatment for ETW. In addition, one in five (19%) suffered from severe erosive tooth
Dental erosion was defined as dissolution of tooth by a solution that is low in pH either after the consumption of extrinsic acidic fluids or when gastric fluids come into the oral cavity.
A novel animal model of extrinsic dental erosion has been established. The model is suited for studying the progression and treatment of dental erosion.. Dental erosion is common, with a reported prevalence in permanent teeth of 30% worldwide. Experiments on dental erosion with human patients are unethical because of the irreversible loss of dental hard tissues when exposed to acids.. The need for a standardized animal model for studying dental erosion has been emphasised for many years. With this new animal model, erosive lesions of varying severity can be created and analysed using precision techniques. The mice model creates an oral environment that resembles the human mouth, giving new knowledge and improving our understanding of the dental erosion.. In the current study we evaluated transverse sections of mouse molars, after exposure to citric and phosphoric acids, using SEM (Figure 1). The method lends itself to further studies on the influence of saliva on dental erosions and on the ...
Symptoms of dental erosion are enamel color change, formation of divots on the chewing surfaces of teeth. To prevent, treat tooth erosion; drink milk and eat calcium rich foods.
When the root of a tooth becomes exposed it does not have a layer of enamel like the crowns of your teeth. Instead the roots have a very soft covering called cementum, which once lost leaves the dentin of the root exposed. Overzealous brushing or using a very abrasive toothpaste can also cause abrasion of the tooths enamel surface and expose dentin. A very acidic diet - for example a diet with a lot of citrus food, pickles or sodapop - can cause tooth erosion and dissolve the tooth surface, exposing the dentin. Bulimia and GERD can also result in dental erosion and sensitivity due to acid in the mouth. ...
The heavy consumption of diet soda can be as damaging to the teeth as the chronic abuse of methamphetamines or crack cocaine, a case study recently published in the journal General Dentistry claims. The study compared the mouths of three adults: a woman in her early-thirties who drank 2 liters of diet soda every day for the past three to five years; A 29-year-old who had been addicted to methamphetamine for at least three years; and a 51-year-old who had previously abused crack cocaine for 18 years. Lead author Mohamed Bassiouny of Philadelphias Temple University found that each patient experienced nearly identical, severe tooth erosion due the high levels of acid in each drug. The American Beverage Association, which represents the soft drink industry, believes that likening carbonated beverages to illegal drugs is an unfair comparison.
Aim: The aim of this paper is to discuss the impact of dietary, educational and behavioural variables on tooth erosion patterns in a cross-sectional study in a sample of ..
Tooth enamel is said to be one of the hardest body parts; however, under certain circumstances, it can turn weak. The type of food we eat and the level of maintenance we adhere to in our everyday lives leverages a significant impact on the life of our teeth. For, example consumption of extremely acidic foods like cold drinks, fruits drinks, etc. causes tooth erosion. Unhygienic teeth develop foul smell and persuade the teeth towards damage. No one can flip the bygones; however, consultation with an expert dentist can undoubtedly bring back your teeth to a healthy condition. Now, the question arises, how to deduce which clinic is best? Well, after thorough research we have figured out that there are four main areas to consider before choosing a dental clinic: ...
And with dozens of new and hip sparkling drinks on the market, more and more of us are turning to them instead of good old tap water.. And, everyone it seems is anti sugar (and corn syrup). While thats a good thing for our nationwide obesity epidemic, it doesnt deal with another common phenomenon, TOOTH EROSION!. The problem is that were seeing an increasing amount of tooth sensitivity and "erosion". Erosion is where the tooth is actually melting away, much like the Wicked Witch of The West in the Wizard of Oz, when water is spilled on her, teeth melt away when exposed to acid.. Sparkling anything means carbonation. And, carbonation means carbonic acid. And acid, well, as you can imaging, dissolves teeth. It dissolves the enamel and the softer dentin and root surfaces. The result is weaker and more sensitive teeth.. The average pH (the measure of acidity, with 7 being neutral, ,7 being basic, and ,7 being acidic) of carbonated drinks is 2.5-2.8, only slightly less acidic than battery ...
Dental erosion is an increasing problem in many countries around the world, and research in this field has increased dramatically in recent years. Dental erosion is the dissolution of tooth tissues (enamel and dentine) by acids that are not of bacterial origin; most commonly these originate from the diet. Recently, protein-based technologies including casein and casein phosphopeptide (CPP) have been investigated and found to have erosion-inhibiting properties. The aim of this chapter is to summarize recent studies by the authors research groups to investigate the use of casein and casein-derived proteins as agents to inhibit dental erosion. A number of in vitro techniques and models are employed to investigate erosion, including non-contact optical profilometry, atomic-force microscopy (AFM) nanoindentation and hydroxyapatite dissolution rate experiments (hydroxyapatite is the main mineral component of teeth). Evidence is given for an almost instantaneous protective effect afforded by casein, ...
Millions of people in the United States, particularly teenage girls and young women, suffer from health-threatening eating disorders, and dentists are often the first to spot the signs. Why? The repeated, self-induced vomiting that characterizes bulimia nervosa has a pronounced effect on teeth. Anorexia nervosa (self-starvation) can also have some noticeable effects on oral health.. More than 90% of those with bulimia experience tooth erosion. This is caused by acid from the stomach, which can dissolve the enamel when it comes in contact with teeth during vomiting. Teeth that have lost enamel can appear worn, chip easily, and become sensitive to hot and/or cold. Of course, acid erosion can also affect people who drink a lot of soda, sports drinks and energy drinks - even the diet varieties. But acid erosion in bulimics has a particular pattern: It is evident on the upper front teeth, particularly on the tongue side and biting edges. The bottom teeth, on the other hand, tend to be protected by ...
Fruit juices - particularly orange juice, with its high sugar and acid content - could be a major culprit of tooth erosion, according to the British Dental Association
Top 10 Foods for Your Teeth:. 1. Green Tea has a well-deserved reputation for providing many benefits. With teeth, green tea offers up natural antioxidant compounds prevent plaque from accumulating, therefore reducing the risk of cavities and bad breath. Some green teas also contain fluoride that can further prevent tooth decay - check the label before you buy.. 2. Dairy products such as milk and yogurt are low in acidity and sugar making them great choices to quench your thirst or have as a healthy snack. This is good news for both tooth erosion and tooth decay. Milk is rich in calcium, which means you are fortifying teeth and bones while refueling during the day.. 3. Cheese is another dairy product with significant dental benefits. Being high in phosphate and calcium, cheese promotes healthy teeth. It also balances the pH in your mouth, produces more saliva, rebuilds tooth enamel and kills the bacteria that cause tooth cavities and gum disease.. 4. Fruit is great for your teeth especially when ...
The above-mentioned health care development and arrangement sees oral health problems as being separate from general health and to be handled by dentists on their own. This is in sharp contradiction to human biology, which clearly shows that the mouth is part of the body and connected to other tissues and organs. Likewise, the health and diseases of the mouth and systemic health are closely related. For example, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and impaired immunity are associated with more severe periodontal diseases,3 4 and gastroesophageal reflux disease can cause teeth erosion.5 These health problems can only be satisfactorily managed by treating both the oral disease/problem and the systemic disease at the same time through collaboration between dental and medical practitioners. Take tobacco use as another example. Smoking can cause many systemic diseases as well as aggravate periodontal diseases. To enhance the quality and effectiveness of dental care services, dentists should enquire into ...
Are you noticing that food is getting stuck in new places in your mouth? Or that the overlapping tooth that was cute in your teens now seems to be overlapping even more? Youre not imagining it. As you age, your teeth shift, according to Lee W. Graber, D.D.S., M.S., M.S., Ph.D., Past President of the American Association of Orthodontists. And that can be problematic, not because youll look different, but because it can make your teeth more difficult to clean, leading to more decay. Its also of concern because misaligned teeth can lead to teeth erosion and damage to the supporting tissue and bone, Graber says. Add to that the tendency of older adults to have periodontal disease, and you could end up losing your teeth even faster ...

These typically fall into the acidic food category. Research has found that the body is doomed for disease in an acidic environment. Broadly acidic foods include meat/fish, dairy and sugars (as in sodas as well) and alkaline foods include fruits and vegetables. To regain health (currently suffering from disease) a ratio of 90% alkaline and 10% acidic food choices has been recommended. The test for acidic/alkaline environment(pH) in the body can be easily performed with litmus paper purchased in a drugstore. It has to mandatorily read above pH7. It is important to eat as many alkaline foods, and drinks as possible. It was scary to find out that for every part of acidic food or drink we take in it takes 20 alkaline parts to balance it out, or 33 gallons of water. When our bodies contain to much acid it will take alkaline from where ever it can in the body to neutralize it. This can be from other organs, cells, vitamins, or minerals, when it does this it leaves us open to all kinds of health issues. The chart above lists many different foods, but there are some I eat I dont see. What I will do is search the food I am eating to see if it is alkaline or acidic. I eat quinoa which is not on the list, but know from past research that it is alkaline, so all you quinoa eaters keep eating it ...
What is pH?. pH value determines how many hydrogen ions are in a given solution (in this case your blood). It is measured on a scale of 0-14. Everything below 6.9 is more acidic, and everything above 7.1 is more alkaline, with increasing value the higher or lower it is on the scale, and 7.0 being neutral.. How does it affect my health?. Different parts of our bodies require different levels of acidity or alkalinity. Your stomach needs to be more acidic to break down food, but your blood needs to be slightly more alkaline. Without the correct pH, your cells wont do their job which is to keep your body alive. Kinda important! Because your body wants to stay alive, healthy and in balance it will do everything possible to maintain the proper pH if it ever gets out of balance.. When we eat large amounts of acidic foods it causes inflammation in our bodies which is a gateway to all sorts of health problems (overgrowth of bad bacteria like yeast and fungus, heart disease, arthritis, allergies, skin ...

Sugary foods are bad news for the teeth, providing food for the bacteria that cause decay.. People who are concerned about their teeth may take this information to mean that they need to switch to sugar-free options, but just how much are you benefiting your teeth with this change?. What many people dont understand is that while some foods are sugar-free, they can still be bad for your teeth. Thats because there is a distinct difference between tooth erosion and cavities. While sugarless foods might not cause cavities, they can still lead to erosion. This is especially true if they are acidic - for example, diet soda might not have the sugar content of a regular Coca Cola, but the high acid content can still wreak havoc on your mouth.. If you decide to switch to foods that are sugar free in order to benefit your mouth and your overall health, the best thing that you can do is fully research what you are consuming. Foods that have been sweetened with an artificial sweetener are generally ...
