PY - 2012/10. Y1 - 2012/10. N2 - Purpose: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is associated with substantial mortality and morbidity, and oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is representative in OSCC. Early detection of oral premalignant lesions (OPLs) that will develop into invasive tumors is necessary to improve the poor prognosis of this cancer. Methods: To identify potential biomarkers that could be used for early detection, we compared the gene expression of incident primary oral tongue SCC, severe dysplasia, mild and moderate dysplasia. For this, we used three expression datasets obtained from a ...
Despite improvement in preoperative imaging, surgical technique, and adjuvant therapy, the prognosis of patients with tongue squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is still unsatisfactory. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) play a key role in the regulation of tumor cell proliferation and survival. However, the significance of mTOR on the prognosis of tongue SCC remains largely undefined. In the present study, immunohistochemistry was performed to evaluate the expression of phosphorylated mTOR (p-mTOR) in 160 surgically resected tongue SCC, and correlated with survival. Univariate analysis revealed that p-mTOR overexpression (P = 0.006) was associated with inferior overall survival. In multivariate comparison, p-mTOR overexpression (P = 0.002, hazard ratio = 2.082) remained independently associated with worse overall survival. In vitro study, tongue cancer cells treated with everolimus, the specific mTOR inhibitor, or transfected with mTOR-mediated siRNAs dramatically attenuated the abilities of ...
Lymph node metastasis is a critical event in the progression of tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC). The identification of biomarkers associated with the metastatic process would provide critical prognostic information to facilitate clinical decision making. Previous studies showed that deregulation of manganese superoxide dismutase (SOD2) expression is a frequent event in TSCC and may be associated with enhanced cell invasion. The purpose of this study is to further evaluate whether the expression level of SOD2 is correlated with the metastatic status in TSCC patients. We first examined the SOD2 expression at mRNA level on 53 TSCC and 22 normal control samples based on pooled-analysis of existing microarray datasets. To confirm our observations, we examined the expression of SOD2 at protein level on an additional TSCC patient cohort (n = 100), as well as 31 premalignant dysplasias, 15 normal tongue mucosa, and 32 lymph node metastatic diseases by immunohistochemistry (IHC). The SOD2 mRNA level in

BACKGROUND: DNA methylation profiling of heterogeneous head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) cohorts has been reported to predict patient outcome. We investigated if a prognostic DNA methylation profile could be found in tumour tissue from a single uniform subsite, the oral tongue. The methylation status of 109 comprehensively annotated oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC) formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples from a single institution were examined with the Illumina HumanMethylation450K (HM450K) array. Data pre-processing, quality control and analysis were performed using R packages. Probes mapping to SNPs, sex chromosomes and unreliable probes were accounted for prior to downstream analyses. The relationship between methylation and patient survival was examined using both agnostic approaches and feature selection. The cohort was enlarged by incorporation of 331 The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) HNSCC samples, which included 91 TCGA OTSCC samples with HM450K and survival data

Abstract. Bmi1 (B-cell-specific Moloney murine leukemia virus insertion site 1) had been found to involve in self -renewal of stem cells and tumorigenesis in various malignancies. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of Bmi1 in the development of tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) and its functional effect on the migration and invasion of TSCC. Initially, immunohistochemistry revealed that Bmi1 overexpression was a common event in premalignant dysplasia, primary TSCC, and lymph node metastases and was associated with a poor prognosis. A significant correlation between Bmi1 and SOD2 (manganese superoxide dismutase) expression was observed. Side population (SP) cells were used as cancer stem-like cells and further assessed by sphere and colony formation assays, and the expression of stem cell markers. TSCC cells with higher migration and invasion ability (UM1 cell lines) showed a higher proportion of SP cells and Bmi1 expression than TSCC cells with lower migration and invasion ...

The GMRI has previously demonstrated the putative presence of two cancer stem cell (CSC) subpopulations within moderately differentiated oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (MDOTSCC), which express components of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS).. In this study we investigated the expression and localisation of the proteases cathepsins B, D, and G in relation to these CSC subpopulations within MDOTSCC.. We identified the presence of cathepsins B and D in the CSCs and cathepsin G on what are phenotypically mast cells. The identification of these suggests the presence of bypass loops for the RAS. Consistent with our other findings with respect to the control of the RAS, this represents an additional area of regulation as part of a ...
Background Inherited genetic alterations, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), were described in association with oropharyngeal cancer risk. However, existing studies have analyzed a limited number of genetic variants. Base of tongue (BT) squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a common tumor of oropharynx; however, the association of SNPs and BTSCC risk is still not clarified and, therefore, this was the aim of the present study.. Methods Genomic DNA of 49 BTSCC patients and 49 controls was extracted from peripheral blood samples using the QIamp kit (Qiagen®). Each sample was genotyped individually using DNA high-resolution microarrays containing 500.568 SNPs (SNP array 5.0, Affymetrix®). Further sample processing, including digestion, adaptor ligation, amplification, fragmentation, labeling, hybridization, washing and scanning was assayed according to the standard protocol. Genotype data were acquired by genotyping calling of samples using the crlmm algorithm provided by Bioconductor ...
400 Quantitative proteome analysis of tongue squamous cell carcinoma was performed by using laser capture microdissection (LCM) and mass spectrometry. LCM allowed for the one-step procurement of homogeneous populations of normal/tumor epithelial cells from tissue sections. The protein expression profiles of dissected normal/cancer cells were examined using a quantitative proteomics approach based on stable isotope labeling and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Both protein extracts were reduced, alkylated and digested with trypsin. The resulting peptides were labeled with iTRAQ 114 and 117 reagents, respectively. Both labeled peptides were then combined and analyzed simultaneously by nanoflow LC-QTOF MS for protein identification and quantitation. A total of 115 proteins were found to be differentially expressed, including 37 up-regulated (1.2-3 fold change) and 78 down-regulated (1.2-4 fold change) proteins in human tongue cancer tissue. A number of proteins altered at their ...
The rate of young, white women being diagnosed with one type of tongue cancer has more than doubled in 30 years, and researchers arent sure why. The usual suspects, such as tobacco use or human papillomavirus, dont seem to be at work, according to a new study.. The analysis of National Cancer Institute data, which revealed a 111 percent increase in cases of squamous-cell tongue cancer among young white women, found a 43.7 percent increase among young, white men over the same period. Meanwhile, the tongue cancer rates decreased for people of other age groups and ethnicities.. Smoking isnt likely to account for the increase in tongue cancer, because other studies have shown a decrease in tobacco use over the last few decades in the United States, said Dr. Bhisham Chera, an assistant professor of radiation oncology at the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.. Ive treated a handful of these patients, and theyre all a higher socioeconomic status, Chera told ...

Answer (1 of 3): Few main tongue cancer symptoms to look for consist of a white or red spots on the tongue, gum, or on mouth lining. Other tongue cancer symptoms include problem or pain in chewing or eating, and a sore throat that doesnt leave, pain in ear, change in the voice, and abnormal bleeding, or lack of sensation in the mouth.Remember that these are tongue cancer symptoms and might also be caused by any other unrelated health issues. So it is always better to visit your doctor before coming up with your own diagnosis.
BACKGROUND and AIMS: p63 is critical for the development and maintenance of stratified epithelial tissues. The role of p63 in tumorigenesis remains poorly defined. This study aims to determine the levels of p63 and miR-138 expression both in vitro and in vivo, and further to analyze their correlation with the clinicopathological parameters and prognosis in patients with tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC).. METHODS: Levels of p63 and miR-138 in TSCC and paired para-cancerous tissues were investigated by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridization (ISH), respectively. The correlations of p63 and miR-138 expression with the clinico- pathological parameters and prognosis of patients with TSCC were analyzed using SPSS 13.0 software package. Expression of p63 and miR-138 in TSCC cell lines (n = 5) was measured using immunoblot analysis and qRT-PCR, respectively. p63 was expressed transgenically, or knocked down with shRNAs in SCC9, SCC25, SCC15 and UM1 cell lines, and effects on cell ...

Platinum-based chemotherapy plus cetuximab represents the first-line treatment for recurrent or metastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. The most common adverse events associated with cetuximab are infusion reactions and skin reactions, and a risk of venous thromboembolic events has also recently been reported in association with cetuximab. It is well known that thrombosis is a common complication of malignancy, and represents the second most frequent cause of mortality in cancer patients. The present study reports the case of a 79-year-old man who presented with lung and liver metastases from tongue squamous cell carcinoma, for which platinum-based chemotherapy plus cetuximab was administered ...
Whats more, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not list brass nor copper as potential occupational carcinogens.. Dr Caitlin McMullen, a surgeon in Moffitts Head and Neck Oncology Program, says that oral cancer can be caused heavy smoking and alcohol use. Van Halen, who began drinking at age 12, said he struggled with alcoholism for years and said, during the Billboard interview, that at one point he needed alcohol to function.. He entered rehabilitation in 2007 and had been sober since 2008. There are some patients who do not smoke or drink that develop oral cancer and we do not know why, McMullen told DailyMail.com.. However, it is vastly more common that smoking and heavy alcohol use cause this disease in patients with these habits. Chronic irritation, such as from metal dentures, has been described as a possible cause of oral tongue cancer for patients without the traditional risk factors of smoking, chewing tobacco, and heavy alcohol use. Head and neck cancers can ...

Surgical excision is the mainstay of treatment for tongue cancer. However, surgery-induced immunosuppression has been implicated in the development of post-operative septic complications and neoplasm metastasis. General anesthesia is considered to not only suppress surgical stress, but also affect the immune function directly3such as altering the number and activity of immune cells. It is reported that some anesthetics increase susceptibility to tumor metastasis, apparently by suppressing natural killer cell activity. Different anesthetic techniques and anesthetics used in anesthesia have shown different effects on immunity. Many of the studies were animal trials or performed in vitro; in addition, most are focused on a single drug. To date, there is little published prospective clinical research designed specifically to investigate the effects of different general anesthetic technique on immune function in patients with oral malignant tumors. The aim of this study is going to characterize the ...

BBP developed tongue cancer. This is his story from the beginning!. I am male and aged 55 years. I have worked over 20 years in the licensed trade, and have been a smoker (15-20 a day). That puts me in the higher risk category.. My experience began with my wife making an appointment for me at the dentists on a Wednesday. I had missed my 6 monthly check-up by 3 months but had not been too bothered knowing that I had nothing wrong with my teeth. So it was just a routine visit.. Until my dentist, who had agreed that no treatment was necessary, suddenly enquired as to how long I had tolerated a small lump underneath my tongue. As long as I can remember, I replied. There was a pause and I could feel the apprehension build up in me. My dentist then proceeded to take photos of the lump, then x-rays, before asking me to wait a short while. After about 20 minutes, during which I had built up an overwhelming feeling of personal concern, he called me back in and informed me that he had made me an ...

This thesis focuses on the effects of the human papillomavirus (HPV) in tonsillar cancer, mobile tongue cancer, and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). The purpose was to characterize patients with RRP in northern Sweden in order to identify more care-intensive RRP patients and to describe the voice and quality of life aspects that follow RRP. Further aims were to confirm the expected increase of HPV-positive tonsillar cancer cases in northern Sweden, and to study the correlation between HPV, its surrogate marker p16 and HPV receptor syndecan-1 in both tonsillar cancer and mobile tongue cancer.. A total of 27 consecutive patients with RRP were evaluated at 3 months postoperatively using the voice handicap index (VHI) and SF-36 questionnaires to assess the impact on life and voice in a RRP population. The values were compared to normative data. This report was further extended by examining consecutive data from 21 new patients in order to characterize RRP patients in northern Sweden. In ...
Eddie Van Halen was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2000. He attributed the cancer to his habit of holding metal guitar picks, made from brass and copper, in his mouth. He was declared cancer-free in 2002 but then was later diagnosed with throat cancer from which he eventually died on Tuesday (October 6th 2020).. I dont suppose its possible to definitively say what caused his cancer specifically, but is it medically possible for holding metal guitar picks in ones mouth to cause or contribute to tongue/throat cancer?. ...
tongue cancer - a cancer that is a tumor, usually arising from squamous epithelium. In most cases, such a disease appears in a side surface of the tongue, this is explained by the fact that these areas are often subject to injury by sharp tips of the teeth.Initially, you may receive telephium, which later turns into a horny tissue or corn, which is under the mechanical action can continue to grow. Thus, even benign tumors can develop into cancer, particularly if there are several factors that contribute to its development.. main causes of tongue cancer main factors in the development of cancer are smoking and drinking, excessive drinking is too sharp and too hot food, infectious diseases tongue, stomatitis, leukoplakia, and too close contact with toxic drugs.Often the cause of tongue cancer is becoming an unhealthy diet, plenty of preservatives in the diet and the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables.Recently, scientists unanimously repeat of the viral etiology of cancer, as well as the bodys ...

Physicians by the help of the tongue are giving many diagnosis. It can easily tell the sign of cold, hepatitis C, fever, bad intestine performance or headaches. Thats why when we are visiting doctors, first of all they are checking our tongue.. If the person is healthy the tongues color is pink and clean, covered with little bumps which recognize taste.. If the tongue is having a red, white or black color, it is indicating that something isnt right with our body.. The swollen tongue, it may indicates on having an allergy. The dark tongue, usually means extreme antibiotics use or AIDS symptoms.. The long ridges tongue, usually is indicating on sexually transmitted illness, known as syphilis. Sturdy and sleek tongue is telling that you have deficiency of Vitamin B12.. Bumps, sores and sudden tongue bleeding, are the gravest things, which can be seen to a tongue. Unfortunately, in the latest decade, those are the most often indicators of early tongue cancer signals.. Many studies have been made ...

I started off having my left tonsil removed because of cancer. Thought that would be that. Then they say, NOOOO, You had tonsil cancer and now you have cancer of the tongue. So I think about surgery to have part of the tongue removed and think that radiation would be a better option. I like my tongue you know. Years as a cook, chef and manager taught me to love my food. That option did not work for me. Two months later, I find out the cancer is back. Now It had taken over the tongue enough that they dare not try to save any of it. And it also has gone into lymph nodes again, the floor of my mouth and the left lower jaw bone. All of which was removed. They almost took my voice box but God gave me a miracle and cured the cancer from that. So now I can kind of tal with a a limited vocabulary but it is better than not talking at all. living with a trach is no picnic either but again, that is better than a permanent stoma which was the original plan. And the trach comes out in about 3-4 weeks. So ...

What are the most common tongue piercing problems?. To pierce a tongue, the body piercer must first hold it steady with a clamp. Next, a hollowed, pointed metal needle is driven through the tongue. Finally, the piercer attaches the tongue bar to the bottom end of the needle, and then drags it upwards through the tongue. Two metal screw-on balls are then used to secure the tongue bar.. Most commonly, severe pain and swelling are experienced for several days after the piercing episode. Moreover, the new holes in the tongue are especially infection-prone, because the oral cavity is home to many bacteria colonies. In the medium term, saliva production may increase as the body responds to a completely unnatural entity in the mouth.. Are there long-term problems associated with tongue piercing?. Tongue Diagnosis. The tongue is the organ of taste and speech. Size, shape, contour, surface, margins, and color are the characteristics one can observe on the tongue. A pale tongue may indicate an anemic condition or lack of blood in the body. An yellowish tongue may suggest that excess bile present in the gallbladder or a possible liver disorder. A blue tongue is normally an indication of problems with the heart. Different areas of the tongue corresponds to different organs of the body. Hence by correlating the location of the blemishes on the tongue, the Ayurvedic practitioner can determine which organs of the body are out of balance.
Whenever you read articles about dental hygiene theres always a central focus on the gums and teeth. By the way, these articles are written youd think that these are the only structures in your mouth, which is a shame because one of the bodies most amazing organs is in there too! Our tongue is capable of incredible things, and its a central part of how we eat and speak. If youve never thought about all that fantastic structure that is your tongue, this article is about to change all that!. Small But Powerful. Throughout the world the average tongue measures in at about 3 inches in length, though certain notables have tongues that are significantly longer. Tongues are measured from the little flap of cartilage near the rear of your mouth to the tip of the tongue. Womens tongues tend to be about .2 inches shorter than mens do, yet the worlds longest tongue actually belongs to a woman by the name of Adrianne Lewis. How long is her tongue? A full four inches.. The ancient art of tongue diagnosis also describes quite characteristic patterns that can reveal the functional status of respective internal organs merely by observing the surface of the tongue. The tongue is the mirror of the viscera.. A discoloration and /or sensitivity of a particular area of the tongue indicates a disorder in the organ corresponding to that area. A whitish tongue indicates a kapha derangement and mucus accumulation; a red or yellow-green tongue indicates a pitta derangement; and a black to brown coloration indicates a vata derangement. A dehydrated tongue is symptomatic of a decrease in the rasa dhatu (plasma), while a pale tongue indicates a decrease in the rakta dhatu (red blood cells).. The front one-third of the tongue relates to the lungs, heart, chest, and neck. Froth in the middle of this area is often a sign of low lung energy with damp and cold lungs and may translate as a cold, bronchitis, asthma, or respiratory allergy. If there is a small depression in the heart ...
Aim: To investigate potential sparing of critical neurological structures (CNSs) during radiosurgery of vestibular schwannoma (VS) employing different techniques and dose prescription methods. Materials and Methods: Fused CT and MRI datasets of eight patients with unilateral VS representing a wide range of target volume (0.48 to 12.08 cc; mean = 3.56 cc), shape and proximity to CNSs such as cochlea, trigeminal nerve and brainstem were re-planned employing static conformal field (SCF), dynamic conformal arc (DCA) and intensity modulated radiosurgery (IMRS) techniques. For every patient, five plans were created for a fixed margin dose of 12 Gy prescribed at 80% in three plans (SCF_80%, DCA_80%, and IMRS_80%) and 50% in another two plans (SCF_50% and DCA_50%). All plans were compared using standard dosimetric indices. Results: Primary goal of every plan to cover ≥99% of target volume with 12 Gy was fulfilled for all patients with minimum significant dose to target (D 99 ) ≥11.99 Gy. Best ...

In current study, we have shown that miR-493 might be a novel drug-resistant relative microRNA silenced in lung cancer due to the aberrant DNA methylation, highlighting DNA methylation as a mechanism for epigenetic silencing of miRNA genes during the development of acquired drug-resistance induced by chemotherapeutics. Furthermore, we have demonstrated miR-493 might function in lung cancer cells by regulating the expression of TCRP1, a resistant relative gene specifically to cisplatin. Recently, numerous reports have shown the critical role of epigenetic modifications in human cancers [23-26]. Altered epigenetic pattern such as the abnormal methylation of CpG islands at the gene promoter regions is one of the most common epigenetic alterations in cancer, affecting both coding and noncoding genes. The aberrant DNA methylation of the miRNA upstream DNA sequence plays a significant role in cancer progression including cell proliferation, migration and invasion, apoptosis, as well as therapy ...

Although the tongue may seen to be floating freely in the floor of the mouth, it is actually anchored in all directions by the four extrinsic muscle sets, which work together to move the tongue in virtually any direction. The movements they produce, however, are pretty coarse, and fine shape changes are the province of the intrinsic tongue muscles.. The extrinsic muscles are arranged in four groups. Contraction of one set of these muscles (on either side) makes the tongue stick out as its whole foundation is pulled forward. Another set passes from the side of the tongue down to one arm of the wishbone-shaped ...
When we go to see an ayurvedic practitioner, he or she will ask you questions to help determine your dosha. They are also looking for your state of balance (prakruti) and your current state where there may be imbalance (vikruti). The practitioner will also take your pulse with a three-finger technique and listen for each dosha. And then, they will also want to look at your tongue. The tongue gives us a lot of information about what is going on in the body. A practitioner has been trained to read the tongue like a kind of map, which points to various internal organs. They can learn about our state of health by looking at the size and shape of the tongue, its color, the tip, the amount of moisture, and if there is any coating on the tongue. Marks on the tongue can also indicate if, and where, any problems are present.. Ayurvedic Tongue Diagnosis ...
To examine the role of brachytherapy for aged patients 80 or more in the trend of rapidly increasing number. We examined the outcomes for elderly patients with node negative oral tongue cancer (T1-3N0M0) treated with brachytherapy. The 21 patients (2 T1, 14 T2, and 5 T3 cases) ranged in age from 80 to 89 years (median 81), and their cancer was pathologically confirmed. All patients underwent definitive radiation therapy, with low dose rate (LDR) Ra-226 brachytherapy (n = 4; median 70Gy), with Ir-192 (n = 12; 70Gy), with Au-198 (n = 1) or with high dose rate (HDR) Ir-192 brachytherapy (n = 4; 60 Gy). Eight patients also underwent external radiotherapy (median 30 Gy). The period of observation ranged from 13 months to 14 years (median 2.5 years). The tongue is not a large organ, but of course a very important one. It is made of muscle, connective and fatty tissue, blood vessels and nerves. There are small, mushroom-shaped protrusions called papillae that cover the top of the tongue and aid in tasting.. A dogs tongue has many uses besides tasting food and lapping water. The tongue helps to regulate body temperature when the dog pants. Its an aid in chewing and swallowing. Flickers have a sticky tongue with a barb at the tip-when a flicker probes the subterranean tunnels of an anthill, a dozen or more ants may adhere to the surface each time the bird pulls in its tongue thanks to the stickiness. But flickers do not live by ants alone. When one hears an insect in the wood of a tree, it can hammer with its bill to make a hole down to the bug, and not have to widen the hole at all-once it exposes the tasty morsel, it can pull back its head and stick in just the thin little tongue to grab the grub and pull it in. Without that extrusive tongue, it would have to make the hole significantly larger in order to probe it with the bill open like a forceps. The tongue allows it to save time and get a higher percentage of food items, since every minute spent hacking into a tree provides more opportunities for a dangerous situation to force the woodpecker to fly off without the meal. Ive never taken a photo of a woodpeckers tongue fully extended, but have a few with the ...

And as far as I'm concerned, the best place in Boca Raton for tongue sandwiches ($6.99) is Too Jay's. This is a tongue sandwich of the '90s. After all, Too Jay's doesn't call itself the Original Gourmet Deli for nothin'. The bread is freshly baked throughout the day and hand sliced. The slices are thicker than most rye slices, but smaller in length, so the thin, piled-high slices of tongue require some juggling.

Tongue surface. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing detail of the surface epithelial cells of the tongue. The tongue is the mouths muscular organ involved in taste, speech and manipulating food. Here, the borders between individual epithelial cells are marked by the dark folds. The surface of each cell is covered in an intricate pattern of tiny folds called microplicae. The microplicae help to reduce friction between individual cells. They also trap surface mucus within their folds which helps to prevent the tongue surface from drying out. Small pieces of debris (purple) are seen caught on these folds. The device, known as Brain Port, was pioneered more than 30 years ago by Dr. Paul Bach-y-Rita, a University of Wisconsin neuroscientist. Ideally a healthy tongue will be pink in color, look clean, and have no coating. If there is a coating, it may indicate the presence of ama. Ama is a by- product or sign of improper digestion. It results from undigested and unabsorbed food.. Most people have a slight coating at the back of the tongue which is a sign of toxins in the colon. These people may be quite healthy, its just ama that has built up in the stomach or small intestine and moved into the colon. If the entire tongue is coated, it is a sign of ama throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract.. If the tongue is white it indicates kapha-type ama and may indicate accumulation of mucous like qualities; yellowish green ama is pitta type and may indicate some heat in the body; and brownish-black is vata type ama, which may indicate dryness in the body.. ...
