The thrifty gene hypothesis, or Gianfrancos hypothesis[citation needed] is an attempt by geneticist James V. Neel to explain why certain populations and subpopulations in the modern day are prone to diabetes mellitus type 2. He proposed the hypothesis in 1962 to resolve a fundamental problem: diabetes is clearly a very harmful medical condition, yet it is quite common, and it was already evident to Neel that it likely had a strong genetic basis. The problem is to understand how disease with a likely genetic component and with such negative effects may have been favoured by the process of natural selection. Neel suggested the resolution to this problem is that genes which predispose to diabetes (called thrifty genes) were historically advantageous, but they became detrimental in the modern world. In his words they were rendered detrimental by progress. Neels primary interest was in diabetes, but the idea was soon expanded to encompass obesity as well. Thrifty genes are genes which enable ...
Former Tongan MP and government teacher Lepolo Taunisila said the proposal has been in the pipeline for a while and involved previous governments and Education Ministers such as the late Dr Huakavameiliku and Dr Ana Taufeulungaki.. It had been absolutely long overdue, Taunisila told Te Waha Nui.. A former student at the University of the South Pacific (USP), Fīnau Leone said the move could help resolve the problems he and other Tongan students had encountered in the past.. Leone said he faced frustrating challenges studying in Fiji.. He said his family struggled to pay for his studies because he did not have a scholarship.. His parents could sometimes only afford to pay for his school fees and not for his shopping and living costs.. I have no choice but to use all that money to pay for my school fees and begged for food from other Tongan students at USP and also asked them for a space to sleep in their apartment.. Leaving home for the first time to stay with different people from ...

Bio-Physical Models of Oceanic Population Dynamics was the central theme of the 1994 summer program in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (GFD) at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. This unusual topic brought together mathematical population biologists and geophysical fluid dynamicists and provided a new synthesis of ideas and methods for coupling these two broad and diverse fields. Lectures and seminars given by staff and visitors addressed the nature of physical controls on free-drafting or active swimming organisms in the oceans, the biological responses of marine populations to their physical environment and their own internal states, and the dynamics of coupled biophysical processes on marine populations. This volume includes write-ups of the principal lectures, abstracts of some seminars, and the reports of the fellows research projects ...
The Tongan Royal Family is the epi-centre of Tongan politics, a traditional role that was later formalised by the 1875 Tongan Constitution, which spelled out the power of the King and the law of succession to the throne. While in most western countries one could follow political trends by studying the manifestos and the working agenda of political parties, in Tonga one has to understand the political thoughts of the King and the members of the Royal Family. This is no easy task, because of the exclusiveness that surrounds the Royal Family in their daily lives. By Pesi Fonua. From Matangi Tonga Magazine, Vol. 16, no. 3, December 2001. It is suggested that the major prehistoric human colonizations of Oceania occurred twice, namely, about 50,000 and 4,000 years ago. The first settlers are considered as ancestors of indigenous people in New Guinea and Australia. The second settlers are Austronesian-speaking people who dispersed by voyaging in the Pacific Ocean. In this study, we performed genome-wide SNP typing on an indigenous Melanesian (Papuan) population, Gidra, and a Polynesian population, Tongans, by using the Affymetrix 500K assay. The SNP data were analyzed together with the data of the HapMap samples provided by Affymetrix. In agreement with previous studies, our phylogenetic analysis indicated that indigenous Melanesians are genetically closer to Asians than to Africans and European Americans. Population structure analyses revealed that the Tongan population is genetically originated from Asians at 70% and indigenous Melanesians at 30%, which thus supports the so-called Slow train model. We also applied the SNP data ...

The Super Nassarius Snail from Tonga combines unique beauty with unparalleled scavenging abilities. Its oval, spiral shell is often said to resemble an olive pit, but it is much more ornate and elegant in its beauty. The most striking physical characteristic, however, is the long, tube-like siphon that protrudes from one end of the shell. This siphon is used to breathe while the Super Nassarius Snail is buried in the substrate foraging for food. In addition to beauty, the Nassarius sp. is an ideal detritus eater that also helps maintain adequate oxygen levels in the substrate as they burrow and sift through the sand. Among the many species of Nassarius snails found in the coastal zones of most oceans, the Super Nassarius Snail is one of the largest and can grow up to 1 in size. This size advantage over their much smaller relatives makes them ideal inhabitants in larger marine reef systems. However, since they spend most of their time buried in your aquarium substrate feeding on waste, uneaten ...

There are cases of Bacteria that are judged to be ... 1/4 billion years old and still living. But I guess you just want the oldest living creature - it seems to depend on the source. The oldest living creature that can be abosolutely verified is currently less than 250 years old, but not far off at 188 years old. http://www.extremescience.com/OldestLivingcreature.htm A Madagascar radiated tortoise (Geochelone radiata) presented to the Tongan royal family by the British explorer Captain Cook in either 1773 or 1777 lived to the age of at least 188 years old! Besides the face and an assortment of other non mainstream tattoos on his arms hes got the hand signs for his gang (a pretty well known set) prominently tattooed onto his calves. A patrol officer who has at least ten years on the job helped me transport this guy and his brother to jail. At jail he asked me if I thought the TC stood for Tongan Crip. Jesus, buddy, you think? I guess theres varying levels of attention being paid at work. Later on I drove past the duplex my wifes cousin owns on the west side and one of the residents on the front porch stood up and made sure she vigorously ...

The God gene hypothesis proposes that human spirituality is influenced by heredity and that a specific gene, called vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2), predisposes humans towards spiritual or mystic experiences. The idea has been proposed by geneticist Dean Hamer in the 2004 book called The God Gene: How Faith is Hardwired into our Genes. The God gene hypothesis is based on a combination of behavioral genetic, neurobiological and psychological studies. The major arguments of the hypothesis are: (1) spirituality can be quantified by psychometric measurements; (2) the underlying tendency to spirituality is partially heritable; (3) part of this heritability can be attributed to the gene VMAT2; (4) this gene acts by altering monoamine levels; and (5) spirituality provides an evolutionary advantage by providing individuals with an innate sense of optimism. According to the God Gene hypothesis, spirituality has a genetic component, of which (VMAT2) comprises one component by contributing to ...

In 1972, Michael Oliver, a California Lithuanian Jewish real estate developer who ran an organization called the Ocean Life Research Foundation, and his friend Morris Bud Davis, a former project engineer for the defense contractor North American Rockwell, decided to establish a libertarian nation on some uninhabited South Pacific coral reefs that were claimed by the Kingdom of Tonga and always submerged at high tide. The King of Tonga, hearing of the scheme, laid claim to the Minerva Reefs and announced there would be no Republic of Minerva -- a country with 60,000, built upon sea platforms, with no taxes, welfare, or subsidies -- in what were Tongan waters. A ship used by the American schemers, who attracted a lot of support from ex-CIA and Special Forces types, planted the Minervan flag and erected a stone edifice upon the reefs, One of Olivers associates was former Office of Strategic Services (OSS) officerMitchell Livingston WerBell III, whose company, Military Armaments Corporation (MAC), ...

May 6, 2009. Hi there, We have just had the first yacht of the season arrive at Lifuka in Haapai. I want to report that they were charged four hundred and eighty five Tongan dollars to clear in!!! 200 was for Health, 100 for arriving on a holiday and 70 for a crew change! I would advise cruisers to clear in to Haapai or Vavau directly, where the charges are likely to be a fraction of this - especially in Haapai where you may walk away scott free if you can actually manage to find the customs offical and then wake him up. There is some talk that a New Zealand influence in Nukualofa is seeing charges enforced much too rigorously.. ...

The Sangihe shrike-thrush (Colluricincla sanghirensis) is rated as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. Known only from a single 19th century specimen until rediscovered in 1995, this species may have fewer than 100 individuals left. There has been almost total loss of forest on its small Indonesian island of Sangihe.. The yellowhead (Mohoua ochrocephala) occurs on the North Island of New Zealand. Periodic irruptions of the introduced stoat result in massive losses (50-100%) of eggs, chicks, and adult females. The range is now fragmented through extirpation of local populations. IUCN lists this species as Vulnerable.. The piopio was common on both New Zealand islands in the 1870s, but started a rapid decline in the 1880s. The last sightings were in 1950-60s. Its extinction has been attributed to predation by introduced rats and loss of habitat.. Three species are considered Near Threatened. The red-lored whistler of Australia, Tongan whistler (Pachycephala jacquinoti) of Tonga, and white-bellied ...

When did animal life first appear? What did these early animals look like? What environmental changes allowed for the evolution and radiation of animal life?. The early fossil record is full of extinct life forms that might be animals. For example, see the picture of Dickinsonia to the left. Unfortunately, scientists have had a hard time reaching consensus about what these fossils are, partially because they are so simple. In my research I study the fossil record using phylogenetic tools, meaning I build trees that represent the evolutionary relationships of between animals. These trees are made by comparing the DNA between species to determine how closely related they are to each other. A simple animal tree (phylogeny) is presented below:. ...
What about your own diagnosis with diabetes?. I found out that I had diabetes in the 1980s when I was living in Utah. I went for a physical and the doctor told me I had borderline diabetes, but he didnt tell me what to do to prevent it converting to full diabetes. When I went for my next physical, he told me I had type 2 diabetes. I took my medication but I didnt have a glucometer. I had to go back to the doctor to have my blood sugar tested every three months. I didnt own a glucometer until the late 1990s. It was so great to test myself and see the numbers!. When my doctor first told me I had diabetes, he didnt really tell me what I needed to do manage it. I didnt have a diabetes education class until much later. My doctor was not a diabetes specialist; he was a primary care doctor. It was only when the National Tongan American Society (NTAS) became involved with the Utah Diabetes Prevention and Control Program that we even knew there was a diabetes education class. I learned what to do ...
This paper describes economic developments in Tonga during the 1990s. From 1993 to 1996, financial policies were quite expansionary. Following the licensing of two new banks, credit growth accelerated in 1994. The National Reserve Bank of Tonga initially adopted an accommodating stance, but in December 1995, tightened monetary policy significantly. Hampered by its poor profitability in the use of indirect monetary instruments, it relied on an increase in reserve requirements. Meanwhile, fiscal policy had added further to demand pressures with the recurrent budget surplus declining, owing to a cost-of-living adjustment to government wages.

Research suggests that migration (both low-and high-skilled) is beneficial both to the receiving and sending countries.[3][4][35][6] According to one study, welfare increases in both types of countries: welfare impact of observed levels of migration is substantial, at about 5% to 10% for the main receiving countries and about 10% in countries with large incoming remittances.[3] According to economists Michael Clemens and Lant Pratchett, permitting people to move from low-productivity places to high-productivity places appears to be by far the most efficient generalized policy tool, at the margin, for poverty reduction.[36] A successful two-year in situ anti-poverty program, for instance, helps poor people make in a year what is the equivalent of working one day in the developed world.[36] Research on a migration lottery that allowed Tongans to move to New Zealand found that the lottery winners saw a 263% increase in income from migrating (after only one year in New Zealand) relative to the ...

On Sunday, Governor Brown signed Assembly Bill 1726, the AHEAD Act, into law. This new policy will provide Californias Department of Public Health with more granular data on the diverse Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) populations it serves. Better data on the different needs of our communities translates to more effective public health strategies that save lives.. We applaud the Governor for furthering Californias leadership in AANHPI data disaggregation. In 2011, Assemblymember Mike Engs legislation, AB 1088, was signed into law, requiring the Department of Fair Employment and Housing and Department of Industrial Relations to collect data on additional AANHPI sub-groups. AB 1726 expands this by including the Department of Public Health, and empowering previously invisible communities, like Hmong and Tongan, with the tools they need to advocate for their own good health. We look forward to working together with the Department of Public Health to implement the ...

We got into a little bit of a kerfuffle with the security in the airport in 1993, and this was back in the days before 9/11 where you could show up for your flight about 15 minutes before. And when I showed up, I happened to have a Championship title, and I guess the Mexican security guy didnt like that and so he decided to mess with me a bit. I was going to miss my flight and I got a little angry and I gave the guy a little shove, and I turned around and pushed the security behind me and that person ended up being a security girl. She fell down and there was a huge kind of a barroom brawl and out of nowhere I hear this Eh what you doin? And here comes this 300 pound giant Tongan running through the airport - who I happened to be very close friends with at the time - he get involved and it was like two of us back-to-back like the old Westerns with the Indian posse surrounding us. They drew their guns and put us in airport jail for about two hours until the president of the airport came and ...

The study found that the paleo-Indian diet was surprisingly high in fiber and low in fat. The historic Southwestern diet is thought to have relied heavily on corn, beans, and squash, but the scat showed - in addition to corn and hare meat - heavy traces of sunflower seeds, prickly pear, grasses, and amaranth, also known as pigweed. In addition to being very, very high in fiber, the researchers say in a release, these foods are notable for having extremely low glycemic indices, meaning theyre slow to raise blood sugar. The index for prickly pear, in particular, they say, is the lowest recorded for southwestern plant food, and one of the lowest values for any recorded human food. All of this suggests that prehistoric nutrition was so intensely lean that it, rather than boom-and-bust cycles of rain and drought, may have been the evolutionary pressure that favored those thrifty genes in ancient Americans. None of this provides us with new tools to fight obesity and diabetes among Native ...

The observed connection between circadian disruption (e.g., shift work) and cancer risk in epidemiologic studies has led to the circadian gene hypothesis, which suggests that genetic variants in genes responsible for maintaining circadian rhythm may affect an individuals susceptibility to human cancers. This hypothesis is supported by results from recent genetic association studies of breast cancer ( 28, 29), prostate cancer ( 24), and NHL ( 5). The findings from the current study of CRY2 provide more evidence demonstrating a role for the circadian genes in NHL susceptibility.. To the best of our knowledge, genetic variants in CRY2 have not been previously examined in NHL, and only one of the SNPs genotyped in the case-control portion of this analysis had been studied previously; in a population-based case-control study conducted in China, which showed a significant association between the variant allele of rs1401417 and increased risk of prostate cancer ( 24). This finding is consistent with ...

Other factors leading to larger brains in early mammals included greater tactile sensitivity and enhanced motor coordination, the researchers said. Fossils of some of the earliest mammals, such as Hadrocodium, bore full coats of fur, explaining the need for enhanced tactile sensitivity.. I think I have a few thoughts. Um, so my first is, you know, during the opening ceremony in particular, I think that is 100% the most awkward time in coverage. And they really should just stick to the facts. Yeah, like, you know, say kind of the same things, but every country, you know, small, theyre, you know, this tiny island, you know, cat sends more athletes every year. Fine, right? You know, who cares? But I did, I think I particularly feel uncomfortable. And I think the Tonga stuff is is really weird, the Tonga guy who, you know, come shirtless in every year, I think thats totally his prerogative. And its great. But the way that they talk about him is very strange to me, and like overly sexualized and, and probably a bit of like, a, theres probably a bit of a racial thing there as well. And then when it comes to the, to the other kind of poor, or low and middle income countries, or non white countries, yeah, probably theres some weird stuff. I dont know, maybe I just I didnt pay ...

FINDINGS: All participants described sociocultural factors as important in healthcare delivery to bipolar patients in their part of the world, both in accessing healthcare and in providing culturally appropriate care.
