Multi-phase personal care compositions comprise a first phase and a second phase, wherein said first and second phases form a visually distinct pattern. The compositions are intended for moisturizing or conditioning skin or hair and comprise less than about 10%, by weight of the multi-phase personal care composition, of surfactant. Methods of moisturizing or conditioning skin or hair comprise the steps of wetting the skin or hair, applying the multi-phase personal care composition to the skin or hair, and rinsing the multi-phase personal care composition from the skin or hair. A process for making the multi-phase personal care composition comprises forming a first phase by premixing an oil / emollient benefit agent and oil-soluble colorant and then combining the premix with additional optional ingredients.
A 72-year-old man was admitted for recurrent episodes of chest pain 3 months after stent deployment in the left anterior descending (LAD) artery. The patient underwent a computerized tomographic (CT) examination of the thorax with a multislice spiral CT scanner (MSCT) (Somatom Volume Zoom, Siemens). A dynamic study was performed with acquisition of 20 scans at the level of the LAD distal to the stented segment during injection of 20 mL of nonionic contrast medium (370 mgI/mL); the resultant time-density curves were suggestive of high-grade stenosis (Figure 1A). Thereafter, a cardiac CT scan with retrospective electrocardiographic gating and injection of 110 mL of contrast medium was performed. Axial images were reconstructed with an absolute delay of 400 ms before the next R-wave. Three-dimensional volume-rendered images were also obtained; 2 overlapping stents were identified in the mid LAD without lumen reduction at the margins (Figures 2A and 2B). Coronary angiography documented a ...
BACKGROUND: Conventional coronary angiography (CA) is still recommended before valvular surgery. Preliminary studies suggest that multislice spiral computed tomography coronary angiography (MSCT-CA) can be used to rule out coronary artery disease (CAD). AIM: To assess prospectively the safety of ruling out CAD before surgery solely on the basis of normal MSCT-CA in patients with severe aortic valve disease. METHODS: We included all consecutive patients scheduled for aortic valve surgery. We first estimated the calcium score (Agatston score equivalent [ASE]). Patients underwent injected MSCT if the ASE was|1000. CA was cancelled when MSCT-CA quality was sufficient and showed no significant CAD. Our primary endpoint was the occurrence of perioperative myocardial infarction in patients who underwent surgery with no prior CA. RESULTS: Between 1st July 2005 and 30th June 2008, we included 199 patients with severe aortic valve disease: 118 men (59%); mean age 69+/-12 years; 63 patients (32%) underwent CA
Treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is aimed at salvaging viable but ischemic brain by opening the occluded artery and restoring anterograde perfusion as quickly as possible. Time saved while making critical decisions correctly is vital in AIS management. Conventional angiography is invasive, resource intensive and not feasible as a fast diagnostic tool. Perfusion CT and MRI are both susceptible to patient motion, need trained personnel to process and take at least 10-30 min to acquire and interpret. The investigators have developed a new imaging tool, multi-phase CT Angiography (CTA), which generates multiple time resolved images of backfilling arteries beyond a blocked artery filled by collaterals.. Investigators seek to determine: i) if patients with AIS will have a differential clinical response to early recanalization based on collateral status assessed on multi-phase CTA, ii) if the extent to which collateral assessment on multi-phase CTA resembles perfusion CT in predicting which ...
The principal aim of this study is to assess the diagnostic accuracy (sensitivity, specificity, predictive values) of multislice spiral computed tomography (MSCT) coronary angiography among patients having idiopathic hypokinetic dilated cardiomyopathy in sinus rhythm, compared to conventional coronary angiography. The secondary aims are to assess the performance of MSCT in coronary sinus anatomy assessment, and in quantitative measurement of left ventricular anatomical criteria (telediastolic diameter, septal and posterior wall thickness, and ejection fraction) compared to echocardiography. Lastly, renal tolerance of MSCT will be studied. This prospective monocentric study will include 120 patients scheduled to undergo coronary angiography for etiologic diagnosis of idiopathic cardiomyopathy (defined by a left ventricle echographic ejection fraction ≤ 40 %, without anamnestic or electrocardiographic arguments in favour of coronary artery disease) in sinus rhythm. MSCT will be performed within ...
Background. End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients exhibit increased cardiovascular mortality associated with cardiovascular calcifications and endothelial dysfunction. As circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) harbour vascular regenerative potential and are altered in uraemia, we examined clinical and biochemical factors influencing EPC levels as well as the relation between EPC numbers and function and uraemic cardiovascular calcifications.. Methods. Sixty-five haemodialysis patients were investigated. Cardiovascular calcifications were assessed by multi-slice spiral CT (MSCT, n = 44) with the calculation of coronary Agatston scores and indirectly by carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV, n = 61). EPCs were quantified in peripheral blood (CD34+/KDR+) and at day 7 after ex vivo cultivation (ac-LDL+/lectin+) by flow cytometry. In addition, colony-forming units (CFUs), migratory activity, adhesion and viability of isolated EPCs were analysed.. Results. EPC numbers were reduced (P , ...

This study shows through a national impact analysis that the Pipeline program had a significant positive impact on increasing the number of weeks spent in extramural community rotations at fifteen Pipeline dental schools compared to dental schools not involved in the program. While the program was more successful in increasing the rotation time for schools that started it with little available time for student rotations, for any school with a 2003 baseline rotation time of up to seven weeks, Pipeline schools received a positive boost over the 2007 rotation time reported by students at non-Pipeline schools. While it is not possible to pinpoint the exact components of the Pipeline program that resulted in such differences, it is clear that involvement in the program resulted in increased time in extramural community rotations.. Relating the findings of this analysis with the goals of the Pipeline program and with the published literature may provide interesting insights for schools interested in ...
With the CT scanner used in this study, the mean scan time of a thinly collimated spiral CT scan of the brain was 30 seconds, approximately 2 times longer than the mean scan time of a thickly collimated sequential CT scan. A minor disadvantage of this relatively long scan time is the increase of the risk of motion of the patient during data acquisition. In this study, at least 1 patient had moved during acquisition of the spiral scan, which affected the image quality and caused the observers to have a preference for the sequential technique. With the recent introduction of CT scanners with 16 to 64 detector arrays, this potential drawback will disappear because of the vastly reduced scan time.. Another potential drawback of thinly collimated spiral CT is the larger reconstruction time. Because of the relatively small reconstruction increment of the spiral scans, approximately 10 times more images are reconstructed. On our CT scanner, this resulted in an increase of the reconstruction time of ...
The first group of patients (A) were examined using standard head technique as well as with the default protocols used by the Radiographers at the center. The CTDIvol and DLP were extracted from the monitor and the 75th percentile were calculated. Subsequently, there was a scrutiny of tube current (mA) and modulation option, tube potential (kVp), gantry rotation time (seconds), scan range for cranial exams (mm), pitch, and azimuth for supine scanogram. The values of the parameters set in the protocol was noted to for ease of reversal if need be. The kVp was reduced from 140 to 120. The mA was moved from 250 to a range of 180 to 220 using automatic mA modulation. Gantry rotation time was moved from 1 sec to 0.7 s. Scan range was adjusted to 140 mm from 250 mm. The pitch of 0.75 was replaced with 1.5 to minimize gantry rotations/ series. Cranial examinations were done supine as recommended but at an improper azimuth of 0 and 90 degrees. This corresponds to anteroposterior (AP) and lateral ...
Although no professional organization as yet recommends screening for lung cancer, steps have been taken in this direction. During the National Lung Screening Trial it was found that people at risk of lung cancer - heavy current and former smokers between the ages of 55 and 74 - who received a newer type of CT scan called low-dose spiral CT had a 20 percent lower risk of dying from lung cancer than participants who received standard chest X-rays. The scan was able to detect early lung cancers and provide more detailed pictures than the X-ray. The problem is that the screening is very expensive and no standard work-up for abnormal findings has been established, according to Ebright ...

A multi-phase solid toilet article whose phases are separated by a membrane, and processes for making the article are described. Each phase is reproducibly fabricated to form an article allowing the user to sequentially or simultaneously derive benefits from the different materials contained in the articles layers. The membrane is either at least partially water soluble or dispersible in the case of a product used with water, or shearable in the case of a cosmetic product which is applied directly to or rubbed on the skin. The membrane material is selected to dissolve or disintegrate with product use, so as to accomplish its intended function of separating the different cosmetic materials until they are consumed. The flowable toilet or cosmetic formulations are simultaneously or separately transferred into the mold, simultaneously or separately allowed to harden, where the membrane divider is not removed and becomes a part of the finished product. The hardened multi-phase article is finally ejected
Have we then found the "holy grail" of non-invasive coronary imaging?. The ability to visualise coronary arteries directly, assess cardiac function, and detect subclinical disease from a 20 second scan make MDCT more attractive than conventional stress testing. However, the significant radiation exposure makes it unattractive to screen the low risk population. Similarly, there is no justification for imaging high risk patients who clearly require coronary angiography and percutaneous intervention, without additional radiation exposure. It is unlikely that the financially constrained UK health system will adopt routine MDCT in the accident and emergency department to triage chest pain patients for "rule out" of pulmonary embolism, aortic dissection, and coronary disease.. The present niche of MDCT should be as an adjunct to coronary catheterisation in the assessment of patients and a useful gatekeeper ensuring appropriate triage of patients for catheterisation. This is especially true in the ...

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to compare two time delays between injection of contrast material and helical CT scanning to determine relative conspicuity of hepatic metastases. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Twenty-five patients with hepatic metastases were examined with helical CT. The first imaging phase was initiated at 50 sec and the second 75 sec after the start of contrast material injection (3 ml/sec, 150 ml). Differences in lesion and liver attenuation were measured quantitatively. Four radiologists used a 5-point scale to assess lesion conspicuity subjectively. RESULTS Mean differences in enhancement between liver and lesion were 41 H during the first phase and 59 H for the second phase (p = .0001). Radiologists conspicuity score averaged 2.4 for lesions in the first phase versus 3.3 for lesions in the second phase (p = .0001). In 56 (88%) of 64 lesions, objective measurements showed greater enhancement of lesions during the later phase. Radiologists found 60 (94%) of 64 lesions to be more

The study shows that use of a powerful imaging tool, i.e., spiral CT, finds lung cancers when they are very small, and when prognosis is measurably better than when tumors are larger and advanced. The findings reported here are from multiple institutions, providing confidence that their model can duplicated in other settings, and the authors have shown that concerns about excessive false positive rates can be addressed by adherence to protocols for measuring lesion size and growth as a criteria for biopsy. Positivity rates are quite modest, and the predictive value at time of biopsy is quite high.. The authors also show that survival is more favorable when treatment is initiated rapidly after diagnosis (the literature shows that even small delays in treating lung cancer can adversely affect the survival rate). With respect to the question of whether the cancers they are finding are truly life threatening, all patients who had treatable lung cancers and refused treatment have died. The excellent ...

And very time consuming. Thats the first problem, the other problem is the gray-scaling, so the Hounsfield units who are quite variable ~, so you have to recalibrate, if you want to do that. So, for the moment, the only really option for adaptation is just to restart all over again: so make another CT-scan, a planning CT-scan, and redo the contouring. Ok, for the moment, with the software we have, where we can do fusions. Non-rigid fusions make it much easier to redo a contouring, but still it is very time-consuming. So, as I already said, quite often its ... if there is a big difference, then, ok, everybody agrees: ok, we should replan. If its a small difference, then, from experience, I know, we rather close our eyes, and say: ok, well check out tomorrow again. And then the day after: ok, the difference is a bit less. And then the next day its even worse, and then ... The problem is now also with this 3D-imaging, that we know much more than before. So things that passed easily in earlier ...

Over the past 20 yrs, helical CT of the chest has become the procedure of choice for PE diagnosis. Diagnostic performances of helical CT have been evaluated in two types of studies: accuracy and outcome studies. Accuracy studies are designed to establish the characteristics of a diagnostic test (sensitivity and specificity) by comparing test results with a reference diagnostic test (gold standard). Outcome studies evaluate patient outcomes when a given diagnostic test or strategy is used for clinical decision-making. In the field of PE, the outcome measurement is the rate of VTE events (DVT or PE) during a 3-month follow-up period in patients left untreated by anticoagulants. The reference for comparison is the rate of DVT or PE in patients left untreated after a negative pulmonary angiography, which is 1-2%, with an upper limit of the 95% confidence interval of 3% during a 3-month follow-up [38].. The reported sensitivity of single-detector helical CT ranged 53-100% and specificity ranged ...

CT technology continues to rapidly evolve, especially in the area of reducing radiation dose while preserving IQ. In the present study, we used a high-pitch, ECG-triggered scan mode on a second-generation DSCT scanner to assess PV and LA anatomy in patients with SR or AF. Our results show that PV imaging can be performed with a low median radiation dose of 1.4 mSv and achieves good to excellent CT IQ. CT scanning is feasible, with no difference in IQ between patients in AF compared with SR, without the need for heart rate-lowering agents. When compared with prior standard CT protocols, we observed a remarkable reduction in radiation dose for both patients with SR and AF with this high-pitch CT protocol. Scan time acquisition was much faster with this low radiation CT scanning technique compared with MRI, with excellent agreement of PV anatomy between the 2 imaging modalities.. Thorough assessment of PV and LA anatomy with a noninvasive imaging modality, such as CT, is important in patients with ...
All patients were scanned with a 64-slice CT scanner (Sensation 64, Siemens) equipped with a new feature in multislice CT technology, so-called z-axis flying-focus technology.13 The central 32 detector rows acquire 0.6-mm slices, and the flying-focus spot switches back and forth between 2 z positions between each reading. Two slices per detector row are acquired, which results in a higher oversampling rate in the z axis, thereby reducing artifacts related to the spiral acquisition and improving spatial resolution down to 0.4 mm3.13 Angiographic scan parameters included the following: number of slices per rotation, 32×2; individual detector width, 0.6 mm; rotation time, 330 ms; table feed, 3.8 mm per rotation; tube voltage, 120 kV; tube current, 900 mA; and prospective x-ray tube modulation, none. Calcium scoring parameters (similar unless indicated) were a tube current of 150 mA and prospective x-ray tube modulation. Multislice CT has been widely used in clinical practice for diagnosing cardiovasculardisease due to its reduced invasiveness and its high spatial and temporalresolution. As a reliable alternative to conventional pulmonary angiography, multisliceCT angiography has been recognized as the first line technique for detectingand diagnosing pulmonary embolism. A pulmonary embolism located in the mainpulmonary artery, as well as being located in the segmental branches, can beaccurately detected with multislice CT imaging, and especially with the use of 16-and 64-slice CT scanners. Visualization of pulmonary embolisms has traditionallybeen limited to 2D, multiplanar reformation and the 3D external surface visualizations. In this pictorial review, we present our experience of using 3D virtualintravascular endoscopy (VIE) to characterize and evaluate the intraluminalappearance of pulmonary embolisms in a group of patients who were suspectedof having pulmonary embolism and who were undergoing multislice CT ...
CiteSeerX - Document Details (Isaac Councill, Lee Giles, Pradeep Teregowda): Volume rendering is a technique for visualizing 3D arrays of sampled data. It has applications in areas such as medical imaging and scientific visualization, but its use has been limited by its high computational expense. Early implementations of volume rendering used brute-force techniques that require on the order of 100 seconds to render typical data sets on a workstation. Algorithms with optimizations that exploit coherence in the data have reduced rendering times to the range of ten seconds but are still not fast enough for interactive visualization applications. In this thesis we present a family of volume rendering algorithms that reduces rendering times to one second. First we present a scanline-order volume rendering algorithm that exploits coherence in both the volume data and the image. We show that scanline-order algorithms are fundamentally more efficient than commonly-used ray casting algorithms because the latter

METHODS: A prospective study was performed to continuously collect data from 50 patients (age range from 19 to 60 years, male versus female 20/30) whose BMIs were less than 25 kg/m^{2} (group A) and 50 patients (age range from 21 to 82 years, male …versus female 24/26) whose BMIs were equal to or more than 25 kg/m^{2} (group B). The 50 patients in each group were randomly divided into 5 subgroups with each subgroup having lower radiation dose from subgroup 1 to 5. All the patients were performed lumbar spiral CT scans (GE LightSpeed VCT 64-slice scanner) and the scan parameters were different in different subgroups. Volume CT dose index (CTDIvol) was recorded. The qualities of the ...
Surgery remains the mainstay of treatment with curative intent for established gastric cancer. Patient selection is critical to achieving satisfactory outcomes, and involves careful assessment of both patient fitness and disease stage. Staging techniques have multiplied and become much more sensitive in recent years. Current best practice involves a combination of spiral CT scan, Endoscopic ultrasound, PET scanning and laparoscopy. Only a minority of patients progress to potentially curative surgery after staging and fitness assessment in Western centres. Conventional treatment involves a distal subtotal gastrectomy or total gastrectomy depending on the site of the lesion. Innovative techniques include the Merendino operation, and pylorus and nerve sparing gastrectomies for earlier stage disease in the proximal and distal stomach, respectively. There is evidence of nutritional and quality of life benefit in the first 2 years after surgery from formation of a gastric substitute reservoir. Laparoscopic

ocean, with applications ranging from carbon sequestration to the fate of oil and gas released from an oil well blowout. Experimental techniques included LASER induced fluorescence, shadowgraph visualization, salinity and dye concentration profiling, stratification generated by the two-tank method (using a 1.2 m square by 2.4 m deep, glass-walled tank), and crossflow generated by a towed source (using a 28 m long flume with 0.8 m square cross-section). Size spectra of droplets and bubbles were measured using a phase Doppler particle analyzer. To control particle size, sediment was also used; sediment size was measured using a micrometer. Slip velocities among all buoyancy sources ranged from 3 to 35 cm/s. Stratified experiments investigated the dependence of plume properties on the nondimensional slip velocity, UN= us/(BN)1/4 , where u, is the slip velocity, B is the total kinematic buoyancy flux, and N is the Brunt-Vaissld buoyancy frequency. First, UN predicts the transitions among ...
The safe and reliable operation of high pressure test stands for rocket engine and component testing places an increased emphasis on the performance of control valves and flow metering devices. In this paper, we present high fidelity computational analyses of cavitating venturi-type cryogenic control valves used to support rocket engine and component testing. The computational analyses are carried out with a generalized multi-phase formulation for cavitation in fluids operating in regimes where thermodynamic effects become important. The thermal effects and the accompanying property variations due to phase change are modeled rigorously. Thermal equilibrium is assumed and fluid thermodynamic properties are specified along the saturation line using the NIST-12 databank. The thermodynamic cavitation framework has been validated against experimental data of Hord [1] for hydrofoils operating in liquid nitrogen and liquid hydrogen. In this paper, we will discuss performance losses related to cryogenic ...

I did a multi-phase problem on Fluent. And I agree with the technical staff on why you have to or not change the drag forces in VOF. Also Vol Fraction is between 0 and 1. When it comes to computer simulations(i.e. CFD) start with a simple and quick solution approach, (use the default values whenever possible) and when you get your initial solution, you can then play around with your approach to get the solution that you want. This is the only way(I hope Im wrong...) youre going to find the answer to your Doubt on VOF. Can you send me a picture of your problem? Thanks. I hope I was of some help and Go with the Flow, ...

0195] Repeated large area circular scans and helical scans can be used to perform perfusion CT. By opening, closing, and/or translating the collimator 142, radiation can be delivered primarily only along paths that intersect the VOI, thereby reducing the X-ray dose. In the case of helical scans, a dynamic axial collimator can be used to limit the x-ray exposure, axially, at either end or both ends of the helical scan. For example, in some embodiments, an axial collimator can be gradually opened at the leading end of the VOI and closed at the trailing end of the VOI. A dynamic transverse collimator positioned in a plane transverse to a gantry rotation axis and in front of the x-ray source can limit the x-ray exposure to a region of interest (ROI) 144 within a field of view (FOV) 146, as illustrated in FIG. 3. FIG. 3 is a schematic illustration of an imaging system showing two positions 152, 154, respectively at 0 and 90 degrees relative to a subject, of the radiation source unit 112, detector ...
Dynamic volume rendering of the beating heart is an important element in cardiac disease diagnosis and therapy planning, providing the clinician with insight into the internal cardiac structure and functional behavior. Most clinical applications tend to focus upon a particular set of organ structures, and in the case of cardiac imaging, it would be helpful to embed anatomical features into the dynamic volume that are of particular importance to an intervention. A uniform transfer function (TF), such as is generally employed in volume rendering, cannot effectively isolate such structures because of the lack of spatial information and the small intensity differences between adjacent tissues. Explicit segmentation is a powerful way to approach this problem, which usually yields a single binary mask volume (MV), where a unit value in a voxel within the MV acts as a tag label representing the anatomical structure of interest (ASOI). These labels are used to determine the TF employed to adjust the ...

Abstract Introduction Postmortem CT angiography is the method of choice for the postmortem imaging investigations of the cardiovascular (CV) system. However, autopsy still remains the gold standard for CV measurement. Nevertheless, there are not any studies on CV measurements on the multi-phase postmortem angiography (MPMCTA) which includes comparisons with autopsy. Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare CV measurements between the native CT scan and the three phases of the MPMCTA to find out which of these modalities correlate the best with autopsy measurements. Methods For this study, we selected retrospectively 50 postmortem cases that underwent both MPMCTA and autopsy. A comparison was carried out between the CV measurements obtained with imaging (aorta; heart cavities and cardiac wall thicknesses; maximum cardiac diameter and cardiothoracic ratio) and at the autopsy (aorta; cardiac valves, ventricular thicknesses, and weight). Results Our results show that the dynamic phase displays an

Rapid sequence CT imaging provides information about the vascular anatomy (CT angiography), locates major vessels encased by tumor, and eliminates the possibility of avascular lesions in the differential diagnosis of a head and neck tumor. Furthermore the use of density-time curves allows arterial and venous time. The patterns of density-time curves are characteristic for various lesions. For glomus complex tumors, regardless of the size and location, dynamic CT easily differentiates them from most of the simulating lesions. Angiography therefore is occasionally necessary for verification. Dynamic CT has a risk of complications the same as that of any intravenous injection of contrast material. Cerebral angiography via the femoral approach has been reported to have a risk of major complications of 0.28% and of minor complications of 6.25%.
introduction of multi-phase feeding in order to match feed composition to the needs of the individual animal classes. By better adjusting the nutrient supply to the needs of animals, less waste is produced and therefore less nitrogen and phosphates are released in waste and into the environment;. improving the accuracy of determining nitrogen and phosphate requirements, followed by better balancing of feeds with these essential nutrients. In this respect, important gains have already been obtained in better balancing pig and poultry rations with essential amino-acids, the building blocks of feed proteins. For example, a combination of better balanced feed improved digestibility and the inclusion of synthetic amino acids, allows for a substantial reduction of the protein content in feed and, hence, a reduction of nitrogen excretion by 20 to 40 percent (Van der Zijpp, 1992). Concentrate conversion rates range between 2.5 to 3 kg feed dry matter/kg liveweight gain in pigs, 2.0 to 2.5 kg feed /kg of ...
The increasing amounts of microscopy data generated in cell biology requires the development of automated tools for the quantitative analysis of images. Clumps of cells are difficult to segment due to the frequent lack of clear boundaries between cells and are often ignored, but communication between cells is an intrinsic part of the response of cells to their environment. In addition cells often show a large variation in their responses, even within a clump, and an accurate segmentation is therefore vital to prevent the unwanted averaging of measurements over multiple cells. Here we present a method for segmenting clumps of cells by using a multi-scale ridge filter to enhance unclear boundaries. A multi-phase level set method incorporating a region competition term is used to identify a boundary for each cell based on the ridge filter response.
An absorbable, annealed surgical device made from a multi-phase, polymeric composition derived from lactide and glycolide. Preferably, the composition has two phases, both phases are continuous, the first phase has about 0-about 25%m glycolide moieties, the overall composition has up to 45%m glycolide moieties, and the first phase constitutes at least 50% (and preferably not more than about 95%) by weight of the composition. The device has a high distortion temperature, good resistance to hot-wet creep, but yet loses tensile strength in vivo quickly. The composition per se is injection-moldable, can be annealed, and is not brittle.

Improved infusion web material for tea bags and the like is provided by using synthetic pulp in the heat seal phase and forming therein an array of a large number of small discrete craters. These craters, which exhibit an average planar area of at least about 1 10-3 square centimeters, are formed prior to drying the initially formed multi-phase material by directing a low impact mist-like liquid spray onto the heat seal phase. The droplets from the spray displace the fibers to form the shallow craters and, at times, expose portions of the underlying non-heat seal fiber phase. The small craters are present throughout the heat seal phase at a concentration of at least about 40 per square centimeter and occupy about 10-75 percent of the total exposed surface area of the heat seal fiber phase of the material. The web also is treated with a surfactant.
