Previous neuroimaging studies have employed symptom provocation paradigms to examine the functional neuroanatomic correlates of emotions or behaviors that characterize particular psychiatric disorders. This study was designed to determine areas of differential brain activity associated with the hallmark food aversion of anorexia nervosa (AN). We hypothesized that this feature of AN would be associated with dysfunction within the paralimbic system. The tracer, oxygen 15-labeled carbon dioxide, was used to make positron emission tomographic measurements of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). We compared 8 young women with AN to 8 medically/psychiatrically healthy female control subjects during both a neutral and provoked state. OBJECTIVE: The serotonin transporter (5-HTT) is a key target for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and may be involved in the pathophysiology of major depression. It is now possible to image 5-HTT directly in the human brain, but results from studies of acutely depressed patients have been inconsistent. The purpose of this study was to determine whether abnormalities in 5-HTT might be present in recovered depressed patients. METHOD: The authors measured the binding potential of 5-HTT using [11C]DASB in conjunction with positron emission tomography (PET) in 24 medication-free, recovered depressed male patients and 20 healthy male comparison subjects. The regional estimates of binding potential were obtained using a metabolite-corrected plasma input function method followed by Logan analysis, with the cerebellum as a reference region. OBJECTIVES: To assess the accuracy of 68Gallium-prostate-specific membrane antigen (68Ga-PSMA) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) for lymph node (LN) staging in intermediate- and high-risk prostate cancer (PCa). MATERIALS AND METHODS: From April to October 2015, 30 patients with intermediate- (n = 3) or high-risk (n = 27) PCa were prospectively enrolled. Patients underwent preoperative 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT. Both visual and semi-quantitative analyses were undertaken. Subsequently, all patients underwent radical prostatectomy (RP) with an extended pelvic lymph node dissection. The sensitivity, specificity, and positive (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) for LN status of 68Ga-PSMA were calculated using histopathology as reference. RESULTS: Eleven patients (37%) had lymph node metastases (LNMs); 26 LNMs were identified in the 11 patients. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: One of the main concerns regarding resurfacing arthroplasty is the viability of the remaining part of the femoral head, and the postoperative risk of a femoral neck fracture or collapse. In contrast to radiographic methods, positron emission tomography using the radiotracer [18F]-fluoride (Fluoride-PET) enables us to visualize the viability of bone in the remaining part of the head, despite the presence of the covering metal component. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is preliminary prospective study of 14 patients who underwent an ASR resurfacing arthroplasty. Apart from clinical and radiographic analyses, all patients were analyzed by PET scan 1 week, 4 months, and 1 year after surgery. RESULTS: 1 patient had a minor region of osteonecrosis on PET scan at 1 week and at 4 months. As a nuclear approach, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a functional imaging technique which is based on the detection of gamma ray pairs emitted by a positron-emitting radionuclide. There are certain limitations to this technique such as normal tissue uptake. Therefore, it has been recommended that patients prepare before scanning. Fasting for a short while before PET imaging is an example of such preparation. In this paper, we attempted to collect the studies evaluating the effects of fasting in the three sections of cardiac, brain and abdominal PET imaging. Conclusively, we found that the effects of fasting on PET imaging can be different depending on the type of PET scanning, radiotracer, patients diseases, fasting duration and in case of any additional dietary plans. It is proposed that further study be conducted on this subject in order to determine such effects in more detail.

According to the dominant view, information is maintained through sustained, elevated neural activity. Other work has argued that short-term synaptic facilitation can serve as a substrate of memory. Here we propose an account where memory is supported by intrinsic plasticity that downregulates neuronal firing rates. Single neuron responses are dependent on experience, and we show through simulations that these adaptive changes in excitability provide memory on timescales ranging from milliseconds to seconds. On this account, spiking activity writes information into coupled dynamic variables that control adaptation and move at slower timescales than the membrane potential. Positron emission tomography (PET) allows for the measurement of cerebral blood flow (CBF; based on [15O]H2O) and cerebral metabolic rate of glucose utilization (CMRglu; based on [18 F]-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose ([18 F]FDG)). Positron-emission tomography (PET) can localize functions of the human brain by imaging regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) during voluntary behaviour. Functional brain mapping with PET, however, has been hindered by PETs poor spatial resolution (typically ,1 cm). We have developed an image-analysis strategy that can map functional zones not resolved by conventional PET images. Brain areas selectively activated by a behavioural task can be isolated by subtracting a paired control-state image from the task-state image, thereby removing areas not recruited by the task. When imaged in isolation the centre of an activated area can be located very precisely. This allows subtle shifts in response locale due to changes in task to be detected readily despite poor spatial resolution. Sequential whole-body MET PET/computed tomography (CT) was performed in 11 normal adults after they had fasted for at least 4 h. After whole-body CT for attenuation correction and intravenous bolus injection of MET, the subjects were scanned from the parietal to the groin. The scanning was repeated six to seven times. Decay of radioactivity during the PET scan was corrected to the time of initiation of the first scan. The standardized uptake values (SUVs) were evaluated in various organs by setting regions of interest on the tomographic images. We performed serial PET studies from the onset of cryptogenic West syndrome in infancy and studied the correlation between PET findings and long-term outcome in adolescence. The second PET finding after initial treatment was correlated with poor seizure and developmental outcome. On the other hand, long-term outcome was not correlated with the initial PET findings before effective treatment. This is the first report revealing the usefulness of PET performed in infancy to predict long-term outcome during adolescence in patients with cryptogenic West syndrome..
