Mortons toe is the condition of a shortened first metatarsal in relation to the second metatarsal. It is a type of brachymetatarsia.[1] The metatarsal bones behind the toes vary in relative length. For most feet, a smooth curve can be traced through the joints at the bases of the toes. But in Mortons foot, the line has to bend more sharply to go through the base of the big toe, as shown in the diagram. This is because the first metatarsal, behind the big toe, is short compared to the second metatarsal, next to it. The longer second metatarsal puts the joint at the base of the second toe (the second metatarsal-phalangeal, or MTP, joint) further forward. If the big toe and the second toe are the same length (as measured from the MPT joint to the tip, including only the phalanges), then the second toe will protrude farther than the big toe, as shown in the photo. If the second toe is shorter than the big toe, the big toe may still protrude the furthest, or there may be little difference, as shown ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Surface electromyogram analysis of toe exercises. T2 - A comparison of toe function. AU - Shiroshita, Takashi. AU - Fukubayashi, Toru. PY - 2012. Y1 - 2012. N2 - [Purpose] This study analyzed toe exercises using surface electromyograms. [Subject and Methods ] The subjects were 26 feet of 16 participants, whose mean age was 25.7 ± 7.2 years old. The participants did three toe exercises, which were isometric contractions (about 5 sec) of the first toe flexor, 2nd-to-5th toe flexors and 3rd-to- 5th toe flexors. An electrode was attached to four muscles: the longus peroneal, supinator muscles, and the medial and lateral gastrocnemius muscles. [Results] In the first toe flexor exercise, the peroneus longus muscle activity increased significantiy more than the other muscles. In 2nd-to-5th toe flexor and 3rd-to-5th toe flexor exercise, the supinator muscle activity increased significantly compared to the peroneus longus muscle, and the peroneus longus muscle activity decreased ...
Overlapping toes are characterized by one toe lying on top of an adjacent toe. The fifth toe is the most commonly affected. Overlapping toes may develop in the unborn fetus. Passive stretching and adhesive taping is most commonly used to correct overlapping toes in infants, but the deformity usually recurs. Sometimes they can be surgically corrected by releasing the tendon and soft tissues about the joint at the base of the fifth toe. In some extreme cases, a pin may be surgically inserted to hold the toe in a straightened position. The pin, which exits the tip of the toe, may be left in place for up to three weeks.. Underlapping toes usually involve the fourth and fifth toes. (A special form of underlapping toes is called congenital curly toes). The cause of underlapping toes is unknown. It is speculated that they may be caused by an imbalance in muscle strength of the small muscles of the foot. If deformed toes are flexible, a simple release of the tendon in the bottom of the toe will allow ...
Toe walking refers to a condition where a person walks on their toes without putting much weight on the heel or any other part of the foot. Toe walking in toddlers is common. These children usually adopt a normal walking pattern as they grow older. If a child continues to walk on their toes past the age of three, they should be evaluated by a doctor. Toe walking can be caused by different factors. One type of toe walking is also called "habitual" or "idiopathic" toe walking, where the cause is unknown. Other causes include a congenital short Achilles tendon, muscle spasticity (especially as associated with cerebral palsy) and paralytic muscle disease such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy. A congenital shortening of the Achilles tendon can be hereditary, can take place over time as the result of abnormal foot structure which shortens the tendon, or can shorten over time if its full length is not being used. Toe walking is sometimes caused by a bone block located at the ankle which prevents the ...
Overlapping and underlapping toes occur when toes are out of position. The conditions can be congenital due to inheritance or the fetuss in-utero position, or they can develop over time from ill-fitting footwear that constricts or pressures the toes, keeping them bunched rather than flat. It can also stem from a bunion.. An overlapping toe lies across the top of an adjacent toe rather than staying in its straight position. This is most common with the fifth toe. An underlapping toe lies behind another toe; this most commonly affects the fourth and fifth toes. Congenital curly toe is a condition where the toes curl and point to the outside of the foot. It is usually congenital and can be worsened by ill-fitting footwear. As a result of toe overlapping or underlapping, blisters, irritation, corns, and calluses may form as the toes rub against one another and footwear.. Treatment for overlapping and underlapping toes involves stretching and taping the toes, which is usually how the condition is ...
Ligaments surrounding the joint at the base of the second toe form a "capsule," which helps the joint to function properly. Capsulitis is a condition in which these ligaments have become inflamed.. Although capsulitis can also occur in the joints of the third or fourth toes, it most commonly affects the second toe. This inflammation causes considerable discomfort and, if left untreated, can eventually lead to a weakening of surrounding ligaments that can cause dislocation of the toe. Capsulitis-also referred to as predislocation syndrome-is a common condition that can occur at any age.. ...

The aim of the present thesis was to assess the occurrence of early lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD) in patients with diabetes and to assess novel potential risk markers for development or worsening of LEAD in the same patients. In parallel different measures of impaired peripheral circulation were evaluated.. The measurement of ankle-to- brachial blood pressure index (ABI) to screen for asymptomatic LEAD in diabetic subjects is unreliable since a large proportion of patients have stiff ankle arteries (mediasclerosis) and thus may display a too high ABI. We studied type 1-, type 2 diabetic and non-diabetic subjects without a previous history of LEAD and a composite variable of ankle - plus toe blood pressures and indices was compared to ABI alone in detecting LEAD. Significantly more subjects with reduced peripheral circulation were detected using the composite variable compared to ABI alone. This was particularly true in diabetic subjects, about 30% of whom had signs of impaired ...
If your child walks on his or her toes or the ball of the foot, often referred to as toe walking, Good Shepherd is here to help.. Toe walking can be part of natural development, and is fairly common in children who are pulling to stand, walking along furniture and early stepping. Children often experiment with walking on their toes in their toddler years; however they shouldnt exclusively walk on their toes.. Early diagnosis of toe walking is important to identify the underlying cause and treat the impairments to prevent future issues with balance, flexibility and motor skill development.. At Good Shepherd, toe walking is typically treated by a physical therapist. Therapy may include stretching, strengthening, serial casting, orthoses, desensitization activities and instruction in a home program. Level of care:. ...

The first step towards curing toe nail fungus is to keep your feet clean and dry at all times. You must wash your feet thoroughly with soap and water and then remember to dry your feet. While wiping your feet, see that no moisture is left around and between the toes. You can use anti-fungal powder to keep your feet dry. Your toenails must be trimmed well but see that you dont extend beyond the tips of your toes. Use a separate set of clippers for infected nails. Otherwise you will land up spreading the fungus on healthy nails. Tea tree oil, made from an Australian plant is used to treat toe nail fungus. You can also try a natural anti fungal treatment formula known as "ZetaClear". It basically attacks the toe nail fungus through the blood stream. You can treat toe nail fungus by using ZetaClear which takes about 1-2 months of improvement. Within 6 to 9 months, the fungus gets completely eliminated. Always use a high quality anti fungal product to completely eliminate and be cured of toe nail ...

Home remedies for toe walking - Is toe walking bad for you? Depends. There are plenty of toe walkers in this world with no issues, but with some you can have a contracted or short achilles tendon. This can cause other pathology. Bottom line, if there is no pain, I would not worry so much. In a child, heel lifts in the shoes can help train the child to eliminate the condition. (if in a child - a consultation with podiatrist is recommended.).
Probably the most famous non-human examples of extra-toed mammals can be found among the records of polydactylous horses. One of the classic examples of evolution is the gradual disappearance over millions of years of all but one of the horses functional toes. The horse lineage began with the Eocene epochs dawn horse Hyracotherium (formerly called Eohippus), with four functional toes on each forefoot; leading on to Mesohippus of the Oligocene epoch, with three toes; to Merychippus of the Miocene, in which the two lateral toes were greatly reduced in size so that they no longer touched the ground; and to Pliohippus of the Pliocene, whose two lateral toes were merely insignificant splints whereas its central toe was massively enlarged, with its single hoof (modified toenail) bearing the animals entire body weight. This same condition is present in normal specimens of all modern-day horses too, belonging to the genus Equus. (It should be noted, however, that this is not a direct, straight-line ...

Five patients received FHL and flexor digitorum longus (FDL) tenolysis at the musculotendinous junction; among them, two also underwent Z-plasty lengthening of the FHL tendon. Nine patients underwent percutaneous segmental toe flexor tenotomy. The Hallux Metatarsophalangeal- Interphalangeal Scale (Hallux MTP-IP scale) and Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS), English version LK1.0 self-explanatory questionnaire were used to evaluate the functional outcomes ...
The flexor hallucis longus muscle is one of the three major deep muscles found in the lower back region of the leg. Specifically, the muscle spans part of the calf. It is the largest and strongest deep muscle of the legs posterior section.
Treatment is usually centered on an individual basis and the severity of the injury sustained. The following are general principle guidelines for turf toe injuries. The mnemonic "RICE" can be employed. The "R" stands for rest and is the hallmark component to allow for successful healing to occur. However, this is the greatest area of noncompliance because the athlete assumes the injury to be trivial and not severe enough to miss a game or practice. The "I" represents ice, which is usually performed for the first 48-72 hours after the initial injury. Cryotherapy consists of placing the injured toe in a bucket of ice water for 15-20 minute intervals. "C" signifies compression, which is done by taping the great toe in a compression dressing or strapping. The "E: stands for equipment modification or change. For example, the use of a stiffer athletic shoe to resist motion of the great toe or the insertion of an orthotic to increase the support of the great toe. Additionally, strapping of the great ...

This is also an effective way to eliminate the feeling of self-consciousness, and even shame, that uneven toes can create. Due to the skill of our specialists, patients undergoing toe surgery can expect more attractive, pain-free feet and can often wear high heels again within a surprisingly short time period.. Toe shortening surgery at South Coast Specialty involves making an incision in the side of the long toe, dislocating the toe, shaving off the necessary amount of bone, and fusing the bones together. This cutting-edge procedure is a substantial improvement over past procedures, which generally involved a pin and sometimes led to ongoing pain and other complications.. p,The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the strength of the foot muscles that control the toes and disorders such as shin splint. In order to this, we designed and built a toe dynamometer to compare the muscle power exerted through the toes in top female marathon runners and age-matched women not involved in sports. The subjects were 12 top-level female marathon runners (Group A) and 37 student nurses who were not involved in sports (Group B). We devised a dynamometer to measure the total power exerted by the flexor muscles of the 5 toes of a single foot (total flexor power) and the combined power of the abductors of the big (1st) and little (5th) toes (abductor power). In Group A, the total flexor power was 14.3 +/- 5.3 kg in the right foot and 15.4 +/- 4.7 kg in the left foot. The abductor power was 1.9 +/- 1.8 kg in the right foot and 2.2 +/- 1.9 kg in the left foot. In Group B, total flexor power was 18.3 +/- 6.7 kg in the right foot, while the abductor power was ...

I would like to know what may be wrong with my big toe. About a week ago I noticed that it was hot to touch, it went from there to seeing a red line that moved up to the top of the toe nail. Over this past week the nail color of the toe has turned black and blue. It is very painful to touch, but Not painful to walk. I did NOT do anything to the toe such as a tramua, it just started on its own. Is this something I need to have checked out or can I soak it in epson salt? is it an infection UNDER the nail ...
Yesterday I kicked the door of my Bathroom, I had on my Skeetcher Tennis Shoes when I did this. The Big toe is swollen almost to twice the size of normalcy. I am unable to walk with full weight of my body on this foot unless I put the weight on the outter side of my heel and my little toe and ball under the little outer toe. There is a bluish color to my Large toe on the innerside, and leading down towards the top of the foot where the toes meet. I am able to barely bend the tow downwards due to the swelling, and am completley unable to bend it upwards as the pain is unbearable! Any suggestions as to what should be done? I unfortunaltly do not have insurance as my Husband was laid off last September, and have not seeked any professional help. Thank you.. ...
Turf toe is a sprained joint in the big toe due to excessive upward bending. It is usually a sports injury that occurs as a result of jamming the toe suddenly or pushing off repetitively while running or jumping. Athletes who play sports on turf surfaces, such as football and soccer, are prone to turf toe, which is what gave the condition its name. However, gymnasts, basketball players, dancers, and wrestlers can also suffer from turf toe due to the movements involved in their sports ...
the extensor hallucis longus and the extensor digitorum communis deep to the annular ligament or extensor retinaculum. The deep peroneal nerve lies immediately lateral to the vessel. In the foot, the artery passes under the extensor hallucis brevis. At the base of the first intermetatarsal space, the dorsalis pedis artery dives plantar between the heads of the first dorsal interosseous muscle to connect to the plantar arch. Before passing plantar, the dorsalis pedis artery gives off the first dorsal-metatarsal artery, which travels distally in the first metatarsal space to the first web space, where it divides to supply the adjacent sides of the great and second toes. In this course, it usually lies on the first dorsal interosseous muscle, but may lie within the interosseous muscle or deep to it to cross superficial to the first intermetatarsal ligament. In approximately 60% of our patients, the dorsal-metatarsal artery is extremely small. The supply to the great and second toe is dominated by ...
Hello and thank you for your question. 5th toe pain is very common due to the shape of shoes which do not match the shape of the foot. In addition if you have any rotation or contracture of your 5th toe this can increase the pressure from the shoes. What I suggest is checking out some silicone toe covers for when you need to wear closed shoes or choose shoes that are wider or softer material. If the pain persists there is a surgical procedure to correct the 5th toe contracture. You can speak to a Podiatric Surgeon about this procecure. Average recovery time is 2 weeks. I hope this helps! ...
Aim. To explore risk factors for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) as well as the association between toe blood pressure and subclinical and clinical central vascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes.. Method. Toe brachial index (TBI) was cross-sectionally analyzed in 742 middle-aged (54-66 years) patients with type 2 diabetes as well as non-diabetic controls and related to other vascular measures (e.g. carotid intima media thickness (IMT), presence of carotid plaque, central arterial stiffness and left ventricular mass index) and previous cardiovascular events.. Results. A TBI ≤ 0.7 was seen in 22% of the patients but only one patient had severe TBI reduction (TBI ≤ 0.3). The corresponding figures in the controls were 13% and 0%, respectively. Mean TBI was significantly lower in patients with type 2 diabetes than in controls (0.81 ± 0.14 vs. 0.87 ± 0.15, p , 0.001). In patients with diabetes, a lower TBI was associated with increased central arterial stiffness (p , 0.001), IMT (p ...

The Dilophosauripus footprints reported by Welles in 1971 were all on the same level, and were described as a "chicken yard hodge-podge" of footprints, with few forming a trackway. The footprints had been imprinted in mud, which allowed the feet to sink down 5-10 centimeters (2.0-3.9 in). The prints were sloppy, and the varying breadth of the toe prints indicates that mud had clung to the feet. The impressions varied according to differences in the substrate and the manner in which they were made; sometimes the foot was planted directly, but there was often a backwards or forwards slip as the foot came down. The positions and angles of the toes also varied considerably, which indicates they must have been quite flexible. The Dilophosauripus footprints had an offset second toe with a thick base, and very long, straight claws that were in line with the axes of the toe-pads. One of the footprints was missing the claw of the second toe, perhaps due to injury.[29] In 1984 Welles interpreted the fact ...

While searching for genes involved in hypospadias, we identified this family with atypical HFGS carrying a novel mutation in the HOXA13 gene. The mutation consists of a duplication of 18 bp resulting in six additional alanines in the second polyalanine tract in the first exon of HOXA13.. This is the largest HFGS family reported so far, with 27 affected subjects in six generations. However, it appears to be an atypical variant of the syndrome since many phenotypic features distinguish this family from previously described HFGS families. The skeletal anomalies are less severe, in particular regarding the feet. Affected subjects have small feet, brachydactyly of the second and fifth toes, and a large gap between the first and second toes. The latter two features have not been described in any previously reported HFGS families; however, short or uniphalangeal second toes with absent nails are found in Guttmacher syndrome in which a mutation in the HOXA13 gene was recently reported.35,37 Hallux varus ...

Hallux rigidus (big toe pain) is characterized by reduced dorsiflexion (toes pointing upward) and stiffness within the first metatarsalphalangeal joint (MTPJ: the ball of the foot).3, 5 This common injury becomes more problematic with age and is more prevalent in females than in males.3 Limited range of motion and stiffness in the big toe and ball of the foot can be caused by a number of issues including a tight plantar fascia,3 a low medial longitudinal arch, prolonged or excessive pronation,3 and a tight or weak flexor hallucis longus muscle.5 Stiffness within the big toe often causes a lateral or outward shift in the center of pressure, transferring the stress to the outside aspect of the ball of the foot.3 As well, alterations to gait patterns and restricted propulsion from reduced dorsiflexion can increase the force on the medial metatarsals which can lead to other types of foot pain including metatarsalgia.3. Metatarsalgia is a progressive overuse injury that creates pain and inflammation ...
