The University of South Alabama encourages all employees to adopt healthy lifestyle choices. That effort will benefit you, your family and your fellow employees. The Universitys Fringe Benefits Committee recommended, and the University adopted, a tobacco cessation program which is intended to help employees stop using tobacco products. Tobacco use and especially smoking will increase your risk of heart disease, stroke, respiratory diseases such as emphysema and bronchitis, as well as cancer including: lung, throat, mouth, esophagus, pancreas, bladder, and leukemia. The benefits from stopping the use of tobacco are almost immediate regardless of how long you have been smoking or using tobacco. Employees who declare, on the Tobacco Declaration form, that they and their covered spouse do not use tobacco products; and have not used tobacco products within six months, prior to the date on the form, will qualify for a wellness incentive of $50 per month (one per family). The wellness incentive will ...
More than 90% of dental providers reported that they routinely ask patients about tobacco use, 76% counsel patients, and 45% routinely offer cessation assistance, defined as referring patients for cessation counseling, providing a cessation prescription, or both. Results from multivariable analysis indicated that cessation assistance was associated with having a practice with 1 or more hygienists, having a chart system that includes a tobacco use question, having received training on treating tobacco dependence, and having positive attitudes toward treating tobacco use. Providers who did not offer assistance but who reported that they would change their practice patterns if sufficiently reimbursed were more likely to be in a group practice, treat patients insured through Medicaid, and have positive attitudes toward treating tobacco dependence ...

The adverse effects of smoking have been widely promulgated for several decades through several research studies, culminating in the hallmark Surgeon Generals Report (United States Department of Health and Human Services [USDHHS], 2014). The 2014 Surgeon Generals Report (SGR) concluded that smoking leads to numerous adverse effects in patients with cancer, including poor wound healing, increased post-operative pain, increased side effects from cancer treatment, and increased cancer-specific and all-cause mortality (USDHHS, 2014). However, extant literature is less well defined regarding the effect smoking has on response to both cancer treatment and treatment-related toxicities (USDHHS, 2014). Despite the benefits of smoking cessation for all patients, there is also a paucity of data regarding the best way to most effectively deliver tobacco cessation services to patients with cancer in the United States (US). Additionally, in a healthcare environment that is increasingly challenged to provide ...
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius awarded as much as $137 million, to the states funded in part by the Affordable Care Act (ACA), with the goal of strengthening the public health infrastructure and provide jobs in core areas of public health. Awarded in almost all 50 states, the grants enhance state, tribal, local and territorial efforts to provide tobacco cessation services, reinforce public health laboratory and immunization services, prevent healthcare-associated infections, and provide comprehensive substance abuse prevention and treatment programs. "More than ever, it is important to help states fight disease and protect public health," Sebelius said. "These awards are an important investment and will enable states and communities to help Americans quit smoking, get immunized and prevent disease and illness before they start.". The grants will fund vital state and local public health programs supported through the Centers for Disease Control and ...

People with severe mental disorders (SMD) experience premature mortality mostly from preventable physical causes. The World Health Organization (WHO) have recently produced guidelines on the management of physical health conditions in SMD. This paper presents the evidence which led to the recommendations for tobacco cessation and management of substance use disorders in SMD. Scoping reviews informed 2 PICO (Population Intervention, Comparator, Outcome) questions relating to tobacco cessation and management of substance use disorders in SMD. Systematic searches led to the identification of systematic reviews with relevant evidence to address these questions. Retrieved evidence was assessed using GRADE methodology, informing the development of guidelines. One thousand four hundred thirty-four records were identified through systematic searches for SMD and tobacco cessation, of which 4 reviews were included in GRADE tables and 18 reviews in narrative synthesis. For SMD and substance use disorders, 4268

At Houston Methodist West, patients at highest risk-- those who are 55 or older with a 30-year history of smoking an average of one pack a day, or those who are 50-55 with other high-risk criteria such as a family history of lung cancer, now have access to a lung cancer screening program which utilizes low-dose CT technology. The screening combines the advantage of diagnosing lung cancer earlier than typically found with standard chest X-rays while exposing the patient to the least amount of radiation. Patients and providers participating in the program will work with a patient navigator who will monitor their annual screenings and help patients to access services when needed. The screening program is appropriate for asymptomatic smokers or former smokers who fall into the high-risk categories and includes annual scans, consultations with health care providers, access to tobacco cessation programs and referrals to physician specialists if disease is found.. ...

After a steady decline for the last 50 years, the prevalence of tobacco use in the United States has reached a plateau of approximately 23%. Currently available treatments among adults are expensive and not efficacious for all tobacco users. New pharmacologic agents need to be developed and tested to achieve the Healthy People 2010 goal of less than a 12% adult tobacco use prevalence.. Bupropion, an FDA approved agent for tobacco cessation, acts by inhibiting central synaptosomal reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine. A widely used herbal antidepressant, St. Johns Wort (SJW), shares a similar mechanism of action and is effective for treating mild to moderate depression. SJW is well tolerated, available over the counter, and is significantly less expensive than the established treatments for tobacco dependence.. To date, no prospective clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of SJW for the treatment of tobacco use has been published. We propose to evaluate the efficacy of SJW for increasing ...

There is a growing body of evidence revealing disproportionately higher rates of tobacco use among sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals, compared to their heterosexual peers. These disparities have led organizations to support the inclusion of SGM in all local, state, and national tobacco prevention and control activities. In an attempt to leverage the online milieu for health-related interventions, mobile apps have been created to support tobacco cessation. However, evidence-based apps promoted by the National Cancer Institute are unpopular, remain poorly supported, and were not studied for use by SGM persons. Commercial apps, on the other hand, have been downloaded millions of times, contain many valuable features, and enjoy better infrastructure. Unfortunately, they are not evidence-based and have not been rigorously tested.. The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) is currently conducting a randomized controlled trial to assess the feasibility and efficacy of using the Kwit tobacco ...

The Particulars: Previous research indicates that as many as 60% of active smokers are not counseled about smoking cessation. This rate is high despite cessation being a strategy to prevent morbidity and mortality.. Data Breakdown: For a study, researchers compared patient charts of active tobacco users with those treated before and after implementation of a program designed to enhance smoking cessation. For the intervention, residents received teaching slides about documenting tobacco cessation counseling. Point-of-care reminders were also implemented. The documentation of smoking history improved from 49% to 66% after the intervention was implemented. After the intervention, the rate of smoking cessation medications prescribed increased from 11% to 16%, and the percentage of smokers who were counseled rose from 32% to 59%..
