We report on an experimental investigation and numerical analysis of the spectral properties of pulsed nanosecond optical parametric oscillation. The optical parametric oscillator (OPO) used in the experimental investigations consisted of a 2.5-mm-long crystal of beta-barium borate (pumped by the third harmonic of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser) and a 3.5-mm-long optical cavity of two plane mirrors. Despite the short crystal, this OPO provided an efficiency of 26% at pump-pulse intensities of 30 mJ. Owing to the short cavity, the longitudinal mode spacing was ∼1 cm-1. The complete mode spectrum of individual OPO pulses could thus be recorded with a 1-m grating spectrometer having a spectral resolution of 0.25 cm-1. If the OPO was unseeded, the energy distribution in the mode spectrum varied considerably from pulse to pulse. Near threshold, the fluctuations of the energy of individual modes are close to 100%. The origin of these fluctuations are the statistical fluctuations of the vacuum field that ...
Experimental Investigation into the Flexural Behavior of Hollow, Full, and Intermittently Stiffened (bamboo-like) Glulam Beams from Larch Wood
Four experiments examined peoples folk-psychological concept of intentional action. The chief question was whether or not evaluative considerations - considerations of good and bad, right and wrong, praise and blame - played any role in that concept. The results indicated that the moral qualities of a behavior strongly influence peoples judgements as to whether or not that behavior should be considered intentional. After eliminating a number of alternative explanations, the author concludes that this effect is best explained by the hypothesis that evaluative considerations do play some role in peoples concept of intentional action. ...

The main objective of this working group is to identify efficient concepts for using renewable raw materials and production residues. For this purpose, methods and processes are developed for separating valuable substances and producing intermediates of higher value for subsequent processing. These processes are at first investigated in laboratory scale. Evaluation of these concepts is then conducted based on technical (process integration, efficiency), economic (higher value products, cost minimization) and ecological (minimization of emissions) criteria. Development and optimization of appropriate processes is initially carried out successively by means of experimental investigations (e.g. maximizing biogas yields, separation of proteins, nutrients or lignin from residual process streams). In addition to laboratory reactors, a comprehensive selection of analytical methods is available. Alternatively or in parallel to the experimental investigations, a modeling of the respective processes can ...

Author(s): Pham, Stephanie Minh | Advisor(s): Princevac, Marko | Abstract: This thesis documents three diverse projects done in the Laboratory for Environmental Flow Modeling. They are presented in the following order: 1) Interception of Smoke from a Forest Canopy, 2) Flame Merge Experiment, and 3) Examination of Testicular Thermoregulation. The first project is an experimental investigation of possible filtering of particulate matter from wildfire smoke dispersing upwards through forest trees of the canopy layer. If the filtering is significant, then it should be accounted for when modeling air quality impact, visibility, and other environmental effects of surface fires in forests. The second project is an experimental investigation of the processes of flame merging and tilting with no wind velocity. It was determined that the flame distance, fuel mass, flame size, and fuel bed configuration are the parameters that influence when the flame will
In November 1839 the young university lecturer Bernhard (von) Langenbeck (1810-1887) published the first description of a fungus as aetiological agent of an oro-pharyngeal and oesophageal candidosis. We present his in English translated paper entitled Finding of fungi on the mucous membrane of the gullet of a typhoid fever corpse (Germ.) in Neue Notizen aus dem Gebiete der Natur- und Heilkunde (Froriep). There are interesting particulars in Langenbecks description and discussion. The publication happened at the same time as that by Johann Lukas Schoenlein about fungi as the cause of the favus lesions. In this time Langenbeck lived at Göttingen. Later he went to Kiel and Berlin and became one of the most prominent surgeons of the 19th century. He sponsored the founding of the German Surgical Society, the Berlin Medical Society and the Archiv für Klinische Chirurgie. In 1864 he was ennobled. Some of his assistants were Th. Billroth, R.U. Kroenlein, F. von Esmarch, and F. Trendelenburg.

TY - JOUR. T1 - Storm sewer pressurization transient - an experimental investigation. AU - Ferreri, Giovanni Battista. AU - Ciraolo, Giuseppe. AU - Lo Re, Carlo. PY - 2014. Y1 - 2014. N2 - Pipe pressurization is examined experimentally by 144 laboratory experiments in a circular tilting pipe between two tanks, in which the transient was triggered by sudden closing of the downstream tank outlet. The experiments cover ranges of values of slope, velocity and filling ratio of the open-channel flow not explored in previous studies. Situations involving considerable air quantity and consequent intense pressure oscillations were also reproduced. Two different pressurization patterns, defined as smooth and abrupt, were observed, but only the abrupt pattern produced intense pressure oscillations. The comparison among all the abrupt pressurization surges showed how the oscillations changed in starting time, intensity and duration as the pipe slope, the flow rate and the free-surface flow filling ratio ...
The application of textile-reinforced mortar (TRM) as a means of increasing the flexural capacity of two-way reinforced concrete (RC) slabs is experimentally investigated in this study. The parameters examined include the number of TRM layers, the strengthening configuration, the textile fibers material (carbon versus glass), and the role of initial cracking in the slab. For this purpose six largescale RC slabs were built and tested to failure under monotonic loading distributed at four points. It is concluded that TRM increases substantially the precracking stiffness, the cracking load, the postcracking stiffness, and eventually the flexural capacity of two-way RC slabs, whereas the strengthening configuration plays an important role in the effectiveness of the technique. Simple design equations that provide good estimation of the experimental flexural moment of resistance are proposed.. ...

Corals are an invaluable part of the marine ecosystem, fostering biodiversity and protecting coastlines. But theyre also increasingly endangered. Pathogenic bacteria, along with pollution and harmful fishing practices, are one of the biggest threats to the worlds coral populations today.. One of the solutions to the crisis may lie in human medicine. Prof. Eugene Rosenberg of Tel Aviv Universitys Department of Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology, working in collaboration with Dr. Ilil Atad of his own laboratory and Prof. Yossi Loya of TAUs Department of Zoology, has developed a treatment for coral infected by Thalassomonas loyana, otherwise known as White Plague disease. This deadly bacterium infects 9 percent of Favia favus corals on the Eilat coral reef in the Red Sea and readily transmits the disease to nearby healthy corals.. Their treatment uses viruses that infect bacteria by injecting genetic material into the bacteria, a therapy originally developed to treat bacterial infections ...

One of the major advantages of metal matrix composites (MMCs) is that their tailorable properties meet the specific requirements of a particular application. This paper deals with the experimental investigations done on the effects of the reinforcement particulate size and content on the Al7075/SiC composite. The composites were manufactured using stir casting technique. The effect of SiC particle size (25, 50, and 75 μm) and particulate content (5, 10, and 15 wt %) on the microstructural, mechanical properties, and wear rate of the composites was studied and the results were analyzed for varied conditions of reinforcement. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) examinations were used to assess the dispersion of SiC particles reinforced into the matrix alloy and was found with reasonably uniform with minimal particle agglomerations and with good interfacial bonding between the particles and matrix material. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the presence of Al and SiC with the composite. ...

Mixed reforming of methane, i.e. replacing a fraction of the reactant steam by CO2 has become a widely discussed option for the conversion of CO2 into a useful product. However, this can only be beneficial, if the heat of reaction is provided by a heat source that does not produce CO2 itself. For instance, concentrated solar irradiation is a suitable non CO2 emitting heat source. Within the framework of the INDIREF project (Indirectly solar heated reforming for methanol production), the possibility of solar assisted mixed reforming for methanol production is investigated.. A theoretical study solely based on thermodynamic data was carried out to assess possible inlet ratios of H2O/CO2/CH4 into the solar heated reforming reactor in dependence on reforming temperature and pressure. Several metrics where used to evaluate the results for the different configurations: (1) Absence of carbon formation, (2) sufficiently high methane (,85%) and CO2 (,50%) conversion as well as a (3) suitable composition ...

This article investigates the ability of using plasma machining for cutting simultaneously two parallel thin layers at different gap distances. The main aim of this work is to identify whether this technology if mechanized can be more appropriate than using a circular saw to process a three-dimensional structure material such as double layers, box sections or rails. This research is aimed at those working in the automotive industry and converting vehicles. Test models were built for the experiments using 0.7 mm thick steel sheets DCO1 grade, similar material used for some underbody vehicle chassis parts. Serie of cuts were carried out first to analyze the ability of the plasma to perform a simultaneous cutting in two separate sheets with an air gap, followed by tests to minimize the deformation and heat affected zones on the top sheets adopting Taguchi methodology. Parameters analyzed included cutting speed, intensity, pressure, and gap distance between the two sheets. The specimens collected ...

CW/CA (Collision Warning /Collision Avoidance) Systems have been an active research and development area as interests and demands for the advanced vehicle increase. A CW/CA Hardware-in-the-Loop Simulation (HiLS) system has been designed and used to test a CW/CA algorithm, radar sensors, and warning displays under realistic operating conditions in the laboratory. A CW/CA algorithm has two parts. One is a distance decision algorithm that determines the critical warning and braking distance and the other is a brake control algorithm for collision avoidance. The CW/CA HiLS system consists of a controller in which a DSP chip is installed, a preceding vehicle simulator, a radar sensor and a warning display. The controller calculates velocities of the preceding and following vehicles, relative distance and relative velocity of the vehicles using vehicle simulation models. The relative distance and velocity are applied to the vehicle simulator that is controlled by a DC motor. The relative distance of ...

Single-layer Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) appears to be a promising material for next generation nanoscale applications because of its low-dimensionality and intrinsic direct band-gap of about 1.9 eV. Several experimental groups have reported novel electronic and transport properties which place this material beyond graphene for device applications. Efforts are underway to further tune these properties through alloying, defects, doping, and coupling to substrate. In this talk I will present results from joint theoretical and experimental investigations [1-3] which provide a framework for manipulating the functionality of this wundermaterial and take us closer to the goal of rational material design. My emphasis will be on the structural, optical and catalytic properties of pure and defect-laden single layer MoS2 and their possible technological applications.. ...
