Current techniques for diagnosing perioperative myocardial infarction were studied in 58 patients who underwent coronary bypass surgery. All patients had preoperative and postoperative ECGs and technetium-99m stannous pyrophosphate myocardial scintigrams; serum CK-MB was measured immediately after surgery and daily for 3 days. Postoperative bypass graft visualization and left ventriculography were performed before hospital discharge in every patient. Nine patients (16%) had new Q waves postoperatively. Five of these nine patients had positive pyrophosphate scintigrams, postive CK-MB and new wall motion abnormalities, and the remaining four had negative CK-MB, negative phyrophosphate scintigrams and no new wall motion abnormalities. Seven patients (12%) had newly positive postoperative pyrophosphate scintigrams, positive CK-MB and new wall motion abnormalities on postoperative ventriculography, but only four had new Q waves postoperatively. Eight patients (14%) had new wall motion abnormalities; ...
Red blood cells (RBCs) labeled with single-photon emitters have been clinically used for blood-pool imaging. Although some PET tracers have been introduced for blood-pool imaging, they have not yet been widely used. The present study investigated the feasibility of labeling RBCs with 18F-2-deoxy-2-fluoro-D-glucose (18F-FDG) for blood-pool imaging with PET. RBCs isolated from venous blood of rats were washed with glucose-free phosphate-buffered saline and labeled with 18F-FDG. To optimize labeling efficiency, the effects of glucose deprivation time and incubation (labeling) time with 18F-FDG were investigated. Post-labeling stability was assessed by calculating the release fraction of radioactivity and identifying the chemical forms of 18F in the released and intracellular components of 18F-FDG-labeled RBCs incubated in plasma. Just after intravenous injection of the optimized autologous 18F-FDG-labeled RBCs, dynamic PET scans were performed to evaluate in vivo imaging in normal rats and intraabdominal

N2 - Acute meningococcemia is a dramatic clinical syndrome from infection with the gram-negative diplococcus, Neisseria meningitidis. Although pericarditis may complicate the course of meningococcemia, it is distinctly unusual as a presenting sign. A case of disseminated meningococcemia presenting as acute myopericarditis is reported. The serotype isolated, type W135, was a sporadic cause of N. meningitidis in the Boston area. Although the patient had meningitis, bacteremia, and myopericarditis, his course was uncomplicated with early institution of antibiotic therapy.. AB - Acute meningococcemia is a dramatic clinical syndrome from infection with the gram-negative diplococcus, Neisseria meningitidis. Although ...

Acute myopericarditis and exertional rhabdomyolysis, two uncommon but well-described diseases with potentially life-threatening effects, are generally considered as independent clinical entities. However, they may in fact be pathophysiologically related under certain circumstances. This is the first ever report of influenza myopericarditis provoked by exertional rhabdomyolysis to the best of our knowledge. A 25-year-old immunocompetent Chinese man presented with bilateral leg pain, dizziness, and shortness of breath on admission soon after completing vigorous training comprising running drills. Exertional rhabdomyolysis was diagnosed with 44 fold high serum creatine phosphokinase. Then he developed chest pain, pericardial effusion, changes of electrocardiography and positive troponin I suggestive of myopericarditis. Influenza A (H3N2) virus infection was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction analysis of nasopharyngeal wash samples. Other possible infective and autoimmune causes were excluded. Patient
Reports of myocarditis and pericarditis following smallpox vaccination in adults suggested a need to assess inflammatory cardiac disease risk among adults who receive live viral vaccinations. From 1996 through 2007, among 416,629 vaccinated adults in the Vaccine Safety Datalink, we identified one probable pericarditis case and no cases of myocarditis in the 42 days following a live viral vaccination. Our self-controlled risk interval analysis found that, based on one case identified during the risk interval and 10 cases during the control interval, there is no increased risk of myopericarditis in the 42 days following vaccination (IRR, 0 ...

Pericarditis and myocarditis are diseases of a similar etiology and clinical image, and they often overlap. Depending on the clinical manifestation, there is pericarditis with simultaneous involvement of the heart muscle (myopericarditis), or myocarditis with pericardial involvement (perimyocarditis). The paper presents a case of a young patient with myopericarditis, with attention to the electrocardiographic image and parameters of myocardial damage ...
