Has a tsunami hit your house?. Another term for tsunami is tidal wave-a series of traveling ocean waves usually triggered by an earthquake. In deep water, a tsunami may reach speeds exceeding 600 miles per hour. And when all that force hits land, the wave may be a hundred feet or higher.. One of the worst recorded tsunamis occurred in 1970. About 260,000 people were killed when a monstrous wave crashed ashore in what is now Bangladesh.(1). Although we live far inland in Arkansas, theres a kind of tsunami that threatens to crash into our house on a daily basis. Its the tidal wave of media.. The human race has never had so much to read, view, experience, or listen to as we do today. Just think of the choices you and your children have with a spare hour or two: books, magazines, newspaper, mail, radio, compact discs, videotapes, cable television, e-mail, computer software and games, video games, the Internet. Does this feel like a tidal wave threatening to sweep you away?. Since we live in a ...
Tidal forces exist between any two bodies. The effect stretches the bodies along the line between their centers. Although the tidal effect on Earths seas is observable on a daily basis, long-term consequences cannot be observed so easily. One consequence is the dissipation of rotational energy due to friction during flexure of the bodies themselves. Earths rotation rate is slowing down as the tidal forces transfer rotational energy into heat. The other effect, related to this dissipation and conservation of angular momentum, is called locking or tidal synchronization. It has already happened to most moons in our solar system, including Earths Moon. The Moon keeps one face toward Earth-its rotation rate has locked into the orbital rate about Earth. The same process is happening to Earth, and eventually it will keep one face toward the Moon. If that does happen, we would no longer see tides, as the tidal bulge would remain in the same place on Earth, and half the planet would never see the ...
Pedal mucus production rates were measured in the Antarctic limpet Nacella concinna (Strebel, 1908). Measurements were taken over 30-min and 24-h periods to allow the relative amounts of mucus produced on attachment to substrata and during normal locomotory phases to be calculated. Mucus produced while N. concinna was attaching accounted for 80% of the mucus produced in a 24-h period. Rates of production were also assessed in relation to shell length, foot area and tissue ash-free dry mass (AFDM). Twenty-four hour production rates for specimens ranging from 11.7 to 45.9 mm in length (21.0 to 85.2 mg tissue AFDM), ranged from 0.49 to 1.87 mg dry mass · day−1. On a foot area basis mucus production in a 24-h period ranged from 0.61 to 2.34 mg dry mass · cm−2 and was inversely related to animal size. Residuals analysis and multiple regression of mucus produced in a 30-min period against shell length, foot area and AFDM failed to show that any of these parameters accounted for a significantly ...
The extent to which genetic divergence can occur in the absence of physical barriers to gene flow is currently one of the most controversial topics in evolutionary biology, with implications for our understanding of speciation, phenotypic plasticity and adaptive potential. This is illustrated by a recent study reporting a surprising pattern of genetic differentiation between intertidal and subtidal morphotypes of the broadcast-spawning Antarctic limpet Nacella concinna. To explore this further, we collected almost 400 Antarctic limpets from four depths (intertidal, 6, 15 and 25 m) at Adelaide island, Antarctica, and conducted a combined morphometric and genetic analysis using 168 polymorphic amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) loci. Morphological analysis revealed not only pronounced differences between the two morphotypes, but also a continuous cline in shell shape from the intertidal zone down to 25 m depth, suggesting that the distinction between the morphotypes may be artificial. ...
By Jeannette Bedard. With each ebb and flow the shoreline changes. Rocks and sand are exposed only to be hidden again a few hours later. Tides are rhythmic and predictable-a look at a tide chart will tell you when a beach will be exposed. What makes tides predictable is how they are created, yet how the tide manifests at a specific location is shaped by the local topography.. The sun and moons gravities pull at the earth, and since the oceans are a fluid they are free to respond to this pull in a very observable way. Tides start out uniform with depth since the pull from the sun and moon act on the entire water column at once. The wave created is thousands of miles long-the true tidal wave. It doesnt appear like a wave to an observer the way lapping wind-driven waves do, instead, tides raise and lower the sea level, exposing more or less of the beach. Since tides are a type of wave, they take time to propagate. This means that low tide (or high tide) occurs at different times at different ...
Cymophobia is an abnormal fear of waves, sea swells and other wave-like motions. [...] Tsunamis, big waves, traumatic childhood experiences in the beach, waves hitting cliffs or rocky regions, tidal waves, floods, wave pools and river waves can easily trigger cymophobia. The fear of waves can be treated. It may require hypnosis, psychotherapy or even acupuncture. Cymophobia forces patients to live far away from the oceans, rivers and lakes. The symptoms of cymophobia are vertigo, dizziness, headaches, feelings of nausea. ...
While recent funding from the federal and the state government offer some tools to keep people housed, many of the lowest-income residents are still at risk of being left out. Thats because the government funds dont provide the flexibility needed to address the myriad financial challenges facing economically vulnerable families, such as Sara and Joe. Beyond just paying the rent, many people have had to continue to forgo food, medical bills, car payments and much more over the past several months and need help to meet the burgeoning demand.. The need remains significant, and were now faced with a crisis. Families in the most recent phase of assistance have reported that their income dropped by two-thirds since the beginning of the pandemic, and they now owe an average of $5,000 in back rent. With debt mounting and people falling so far behind on their bills, theres real reason to believe were facing a tidal wave of homelessness in the months ahead, if we dont do more now. Moreover, the ...

As previously experienced by the wind industry, it is envisaged that tidal stream turbine blades will present misalignments or blade deformations over time as they are constantly working under harsh and highly unsteady environments. Blade misalignment will affect the power capture of a tidal stream turbine and if not detected in time could affect other components of the drive train. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to compare the use of two numerical modelling techniques to predict the performance of a tidal stream turbine working under off-design conditions, in this case, the misalignment of one or more blades. The techniques used in this study are Blade Element Momentum Theory and Computational Fluid Dynamics. The numerical models simulate the performance of a three-bladed horizontal axis tidal stream turbine with one or two blades offset from the optimum pitch setting. The simulations were undertaken at 1.0 m/s flow speeds. The results demonstrated that both unsteady BEMT and steady or ...
I know of two reasons for why we should consider gravity to be a force. The first is purely classical and Newtonian: tidal forces. Gravity is solely responsible for producing tidal forces, and they cannot be considered a fictitious force, whereas the usual acceleration due to gravity in some sense can always be thought of as fictitious. The way you know that tidal forces are real forces is that they are constructed directly using the Riemann curvature tensor, which cannot be made to vanish using a mere change of coordinates. Compare this to the acceleration due to gravity, which in a general relativistic setting is characterized by the connection coefficients, $\Gamma^a_{bc}$. Unlike the Riemann tensor, the connection coefficients are not tensorial, and they can be made to vanish using a change of coordinates (this choice of coordinates is called Riemann normal coordinates), which reveals the fictitious nature of this force. From a more practical standpoint, tidal forces should be thought of as ...
In differential geometry, the Weyl curvature tensor, named after Hermann Weyl, is a measure of the curvature of spacetime or, more generally, a pseudo-Riemannian manifold. Like the Riemann curvature tensor, the Weyl tensor expresses the tidal force that a body feels when moving along a geodesic. The Weyl tensor differs from the Riemann curvature tensor in that it does not convey information on how the volume of the body changes, but rather only how the shape of the body is distorted by the tidal force. The Ricci curvature, or trace component of the Riemann tensor contains precisely the information about how volumes change in the presence of tidal forces, so the Weyl tensor is the traceless component of the Riemann tensor. It is a tensor that has the same symmetries as the Riemann tensor with the extra condition that it be trace-free: metric contraction on any pair of indices yields zero. In general relativity, the Weyl curvature is the only part of the curvature that exists in free space-a ...
At a commercial scale horizontal axis tidal stream turbines are likely to be installed in arrays (similar to wind farms) to maximise power output from a tidal site. The work focuses on the use of computational fluid dynamics for modelling arrays of tidal stream turbines. Methods for deriving momentum sources are being investigated to represent a turbine in a simulation, and the accuracy of these approaches through comparison to experimental data. The methods have been extended to model arrays of turbines and computational constraints and accuracy of power predictions for these methods are investigated. ...

Commercial scale tidal turbine arrays are expected to be located in areas where the depth of water varies between 1.5 and 3 turbine diameters (D) and the lateral distance between rotors varies between 1.5 and 5D. Thus, blockage ratios are between 5 and 34 per cent based on the swept area of the rotor and the cross section of the channel. It is therefore important to understand the effect that bounding surfaces, at similar proximity, have on turbine performance. Owing to the relatively small areas available for tidal stream farms, longitudinal spacing of turbines may also be small. It is, therefore, important to understand the extent of wake recovery and wake expansion downstream of each row of turbines, so that the incident flow on subsequent rotors can be determined. Various theoretical studies [1,2] have been conducted into the effects of blockage on turbines, including those taking consideration of the free surface [2]. The flow velocity in the bypass region around the turbine (and hence the ...
On an analytical level, the range of holiday houses produced in this case study reveals an intrinsic pattern. Before, the holiday allotments had little or no diversity in terms of quality, location, connectivity and relation to the landscape, making their removal imminent: because of their lack of contribution to the coastal urbanization and because they impeded the landscape from functioning as a dynamic system. The breaking of the dyke has brought an incredible quality, as the soil diversity, tidal regimes, changing topography and landscape legacy creates endless options for a new leisure economy that can actually contribute to a varied interest of society. In the renewed tidal landscape, the height differences are small, yet important. The expression of each holiday collective comes from its physical presence in the landscape. A section crossing the whole new tidal landscape into the sea demonstrates these gentle, important nuances. The cabanes en lagune transpire the life of disconnected ...

Going back to disruption, it is my opinion that the adaptation of a model-based workflow which is run by young, eager, innovative architects and engineers could be compared to a tidal wave headed for shore. It is better to latch on early, (even if you fall off your board from time to time) ride the crest, and have a smooth landing than to stand in the way of the wave, fist shaking at the whippersnappers while the wave smacks you in the mouth. ...
Shippings green $1trn is a profitable investment, not a cost … We need this crucial investment to build renewable plants and other infrastructure …. The entire financial sector is looking for green investments more than ever, as governments, asset managers, and the public pile on the pressure over climate change. Demand for green bonds currently far exceeds supply. Smart companies in the maritime sector will position themselves to benefit from the growing tidal wave of green cash. However the benefits brought by the clean shipping transition go far beyond the shipping sector. These include new job opportunities and increasing demand for higher-skilled jobs, such as engineers, that will help transform labour markets. The expansion of renewable electricity will push prices of clean electricity down and drive down the cost of decarbonisation in other sectors …. Other Contexts on Maritime Geography and Business. Lanes work on maritime issues evokes memories, and therefore connects to two other British artists, Isaac Juliens Ten Thousand Waves, (2010) and John Akomphrahs Vertigo Sea (2015). Unlike Lane who uses only sound, these artists work with both sound and visuals. Julien in his Ten Thousand Waves (2010) recalls the Moracambe Bay Tragedy where several Fujian Chinese cockle pickers were drowned by an incoming tidal wave. John Akomphrahs works retell the stories of migrants and other current illicit activities on the sea. Similarly, Lane engages with the maritime world in her works. Her work however can be linked far more to Allan Sekulas across the Atlantic, who probes like a detective and examines exploitative economics and labor systems that continue to haunt maritime geographies since colonial times, and perhaps from even before. Sekula probes like a detective because maritime activities are increasingly made less visible with technological ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Formation of offshore tidal sandbanks triggered by a gasmined bed subsidence. AU - Roos, Pieter C.. AU - Hulscher, Suzanne J.M.H.. PY - 2002. Y1 - 2002. N2 - Offshore gasmining is an example of a human intervention with a morphological impact. On land, it is usually attended with a dish-like bed depression. We show that, if located at sea, such a bed depression can become morphodynamically active by triggering mechanisms related to tidal sand bank formation. To that end, a simple morphological model is considered which describes an erodible bed subject to a tidal wave in a shallow sea. The continuous subsidence is modelled by a sink term in the sediment balance. Then, a linear approximation is carried out to describe the bed evolution after the onset of subsidence. The results, presented in physical space, show that the subsidence triggers the formation of a sand bank pattern that gradually spreads around the centre of subsidence, at a rate that may go up to 160 m year¿1, ...
But then I look at the last 6+ years....what Ive been through. I went from straight As to barely keeping my head above water because I spent long periods of time in the hospital, going to doctors offices, and basically overhauling my entire life to accomodate a sudden change in my health. However, I still graduated with honors twice. I lost almost all of my friends. I learned to be very self-sufficient because I had to be. I probably still talk to my parents far too many times a day - all because when I lost almost all of my friends, I needed someone to rely on emotionally...and fortunately, they were there for me. Getting the headaches and ending up in the hospital really were the small changes compared to the things they impacted - it was like the domino effect in my life - or the flap of a butterflys wings causing a tidal wave on the other side of the earth. Thats been the story of my life the last 6+ years - one tiny change causes a whole cascade of huge challenges and hurdles ...

And Ill try to do it as quickly and concisely as I can, although there are some here that deserve a more in-depth look. In 2016, CODE41 emerged amidst a watchmaking crisis. The distribution networks were in great difficulty as a result of the big watchmaking groups requiring significant minimum stocks, generating a very large volume of unsold stock and a gray market boom. On top of that came the tidal wave of smartwatches, sales of which leapt 223% between 2015 and 2016. And yet with crisis often comes the opportunity for change. This is how CODE41s innovative ideas - direct online sale, the participation of the community in the creation of models, and of course the policy of total transparency on origin and prices - met a favorable response in a community of fans of fine mechanical watches.. So for us, crises has always been synonymous with opportunity.. ...
A rapid, simple, precise, accurate, and environmentally friendly spectrophotometric method was developed and validated for simultaneous determination of Sacubitril and Valsartan in their combined dosage form, using continuous wavelet transform (CWT) and zero-crossing techniques without using organic solvents and the time-consuming extraction step.Initially, UV spectra of two pure components in water were processed via various mother wavelet families. Then, applying zero-crossing technique, the optimum points were found to obtain appropriate calibration curves for each point. The calibration curves were linear for both Sacubitril and Valsartan. The validation of these methods was investigated by analyzing several synthetic mixtures with known concentrations. Applying one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test and Fisher pairwise comparisons, the following were found to yield the best results: Discrete Meyer (dmey) wavelet functions with scaling factor of 61 at 232 nm and Symlet5 (sym5) with 48 at 232 nm

Tidal streams are currents in the sea that flow as the tide moves in and out. Tidal stream turbines are similar to wind turbines but use fast moving tidal streams instead of the wind to generate electricity. Sea water is 832 times denser than air and so a 5 knot ocean current has more kinetic energy than a 350 km/h wind. As a result, ocean currents have a very high energy density and therefore tidal stream turbines tend to be smaller in size than wind turbines. Electricity is generated by the turning of a turbine and is brought to shore by a cable.. An example of a tidal stream project is Atlantis Resources MeyGen scheme in Scotland, intended to become the largest tidal stream project in the world. Following the deployment of a demonstration array of up to six turbines, a maximum of 86 turbines (86MW) will be deployed in phase one, with the project ultimately reaching up to 398MW of tidal stream capacity.. ...

The Antarctic intertidal zone is one of the worlds most extreme marine environments. As well as having a typically high annual temperature variation (~ 30 °C), it is affected by frequent ice scouring in summer and ice encasement in winter, as well as substantial salinity fluctuations during tidal cycles. For many years the Antarctic intertidal was believed to host only migratory species during summer, however, recent studies have found several permanently resident macrofaunal species, including the limpet Nacella concinna. Here we present results of the first seasonal comparison of different ecophysiological parameters in this species collected from the intertidal in both winter (August and September) and summer (January and February) on Adelaide Island (West Antarctic Peninsula). There was clear evidence of seasonal acclimatisation with a shift in thermal window between winter and summer limpets. The DARK Act was defeated in the U.S. Senate today, achieving a massive victory for consumers and also for the Environmental Working Group, which helped organize large-scale opposition to the bill. The DARK Act would have outlawed state-level GMO labeling laws nationwide, condemning American food consumers to remaining completely in the dark over the genetically […]

4Laboratorio de Bioestratigrafía de Alta Resolución. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Ciudad Universitaria, Pabellón 2, 1428 Buenos Aires. Argentina.. Received September 1, 2008 - Accepted September 4, 2009. Abstract: The Agrio Formation (Valanginian to early Barremian) is a siliciclastic and carbonate unit of the Neuquén Basin in west central Argentina. A conspicuous 20 m thick dolomitized section near the top of the upper Agua de la Mula Member of the Agrio Formation was identified for the first time in this unit. The analyzed section is composed of dolostones with scarce siliciclastic intercalations. A tidal flat environment with highfrequency cycles is suggested for the measured section. Petrography, SEM, X-Ray, EDAX and cathodoluminiscence analyses showed two different dolomitization processes. The first one comprises early mimetic and non mimetic dolomitization on ooids, bioclasts and early marine cements. The second one reveals precipitation of dolomite cement. The mimic dolomitization ...
In August, 2010, researchers using images from LROs Narrow Angle Camera (NAC) reported the discovery of 14 cliffs known as lobate scarps on the moons surface, in addition to about 70 previously known from the limited high-resolution Apollo Panoramic Camera photographs. Due largely to their random distribution across the surface, the science team concluded that the moon is shrinking. These small faults are typically less than 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) long and only tens of yards or meters high. They are most likely formed by global contraction resulting from cooling of the moons still hot interior. As the interior cools and portions of the liquid outer core solidify, the volume decreases; thus the moon shrinks and the solid crust buckles.. Now, after more than six years in orbit, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) has imaged nearly three-fourths of the lunar surface at high resolution, allowing the discovery of over 3,000 more of these features. These globally distributed faults ...
If would like to elaborate on the answer give by Leo L.. Tidal forces have to be considered, too. Those will eventually lead to a rotation of the coin locked to its orbit, like moon. In this specific set up, however, I reckon that tidal forces are so small that they can be ignored for all practical purposes. The term „practical purpose here includes the moon which had enough time to synchronise its rotation.. The crucial aspect is the relation of the radius of an extended object to its orbit. For the coin it is much smaller than for moon and the timescale of synchronisation increases with a very high power of that ratio.. ...
The change in firing activity caused by the tail pinch was determined by comparing the firing rate in a 10 s window before the pinch with the firing rate during the pinch (Wilcoxon signed rank test).. Slow oscillation periods were detected as data segments with theta (3-6 Hz) to delta (2-3 Hz) ratios ,2 derived from recordings in the stratum oriens or pyramidale of the dorsal CA1 region. Theta-to-delta ratios were smoothed by a sliding average with a length of 5 s and 50% overlap. The minimal duration of analyzed data segments was 10 s. Slow oscillations in the medial prefrontal cortex were recorded by the same glass electrode that was used for juxtacellular labeling. The discrimination of DOWN- and UP-states was done by extracting the shape information below 2.5 Hz after a continuous wavelet transform using a Daubechies (3) wavelet function and by setting the threshold to cos(θ) = 0. This wavelet transform was confirmed not to cause a phase shift, and similar results were obtained by using a ...
Historically, the tidal Anacostia River in Washington, D.C. had been an extensive system of freshwater tidal marshes replete with a full array of wetland vegetation dominated by wild rice. The local Nacochtank Indians had found the abundant fish and wildlife sufficient to sustain their daily lives. White mans intrusion upon the landscape gradually brought about deterioration of the natural (and associated cultural) system. Total demise followed mid-20th century dredge and fill channelization, which was conducted from the confluence of the Anacostia with the Potomac near the heart of Washington, D.C. to the terminus of the tidal regime at Bladensburg, Maryland. The National Park Service (NPS) became the manager for much of the land along the Anacostia, particularly the eastern bank. As part of its planning effort, the NPS envisioned returning portions of the Anacostia under its control to a natural system as a vignette....
Package with tools for classification of electroencephalography (EEG) data. Feature extraction techniques such as Fourier Transform and Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) are available. Support Vector Machines (SVM) can be used to classify the extracted features. An algorithm using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), False Discovery Rate (FDR), and SVM is available to feature selection. Additionally, the package contains functions to plot data and features.
Continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is a useful technique to analyse time-varying signals. Direct computation of CWT via FFT requires O(Nlog/sub 2/N) operat
Widely loved for their bold, brightly patterned foliage, calathea are found most often on the forest floor in tropical locales. This means theyre able to tolerate partially shady areas in your home and are pretty forgiving. Most calathea plants leaves will fold up during the dark hours, which reveals the colorful undersides, making them a gorgeous addition to your indoor garden no matter the hour. The concinna features a streaky foliage with contrasting dark and light green coloring. If your calathea leaves begin to brown, that typically means its being underwatered or needs a more humid environment ...
Giant glass balls containing nothing are anchored underwater. When a tidal wave passes over them, they collapse, reducing the volume of the wave.. The vacuum spheres resemble Japanese fishing-net floats, but are much bigger. Their density is less than that of sea-water, allowing them to float. The glass is strong enough to withstand the vacuum inside and water pressure outside, until shattered. The trigger mechanism, which can be networked, senses the pressure of a sufficiently-large wave passing above and fires the shattering device. The floating spheres are connected to cables that keep them at the proper position and depth in the water. The depth below the surface is a function of the size of the wave considered to be dangerous. The spheres must be close enough to the surface to affect the tsunami, yet deep enough to be below surface traffic. A forest of vacuum balls would interfere with some marine activities, but should be below most small boats. A forest of spheres will attract fish, but ...
At the beach, Fancy and Noah marveled at the low tide and Fancy started looking for shells and treasure. Suddenly a tsunami wave swept over them. Noah struggled to stay afloat and find Fancy. He dove undersea and saw her struggling to get loose. He tried to get her foot free and when Fancy was out of air, Noah surfaced for breaths and went back down to blow air into Fancys lungs. He rose again and breathed more air into Fancys lungs. She opened her eyes to see large wooden pallets coming at them. He lay over her until they passed, then tried again to get her free. They surfaced, but Noah wasnt breathing. Fancy cried and apologized for him being hurt trying to save her. She pulled him back out onto the beach. He came to and realized that the tide had gone out too rapidly. He told her thered be another tidal wave and they began to run as the enormous wave ran back to the coast. At the pier, Spike and Jessica had been watching Butchs body sweep out to sea when suddenly it was returning on the ...
Brace yourself. You may not be able to tell yet, but according to global experts and the United States intelligence community, the earth is already shifting under you. Whether you know it or not, youre on a new planet, a resource-shock world of a sort humanity has never before experienced. Two nightmare scenarios - a global scarcity of vital resources and the onset of extreme climate change - are already beginning to converge and in the coming decades are likely to produce a tidal wave of unrest, rebellion, competition, and conflict. Just what this tsunami of disaster will look like may, as yet, be hard to discern, but experts warn of water wars over contested river systems, global food riots sparked by soaring prices for lifes basics, mass migrations of climate refugees (with resulting anti-migrant violence), and the breakdown of social order or the collapse of states. At first, such mayhem is likely to arise largely in Africa, Central Asia, and other areas of the underdeveloped South, but ...
Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and Sun and the rotation of Earth. The adjoint tidal model based on the theory of inverse problem has been applied to investigate the effect of bottom friction coefficient (BFC) on the tidal simulation. Vertical gradient is caused by tidal cycles. Sand in the lower intertidal zone only dries out on the surface during low tides, whilst sand in the upper intertidal zone dries out to a greater depth for a longer period. Being uncovered by tides, the upper intertidal zone normally exposes to air and experiences more extreme temperature change than the lower intertidal zone. Therefore, organisms inhabiting in the upper intertidal zone are expected to be more capable of coping with water stress ...

The world is on the brink of something historic. A once in a generation setting of global goals for the future of our people and planet. They could bring an end to extreme poverty, an end to soaring inequality and the protection of people and planet from deadly climate change.. Everyone in the world needs to know about them, and every leader needs to feel our pressure. A tidal wave of humanity - demanding they become real.. On the 24th September, the night before the goals are announced and Pope Francis speaks to the UN, thousands of people around the world will stand together UNDER ONE SKY to LIGHT THE WAY to a better world. Join us and shine a light on the commitments about to be made so that the world knows about them and every world leader knows that well be watching every step of the way to ensure they are met.. ...
When that happens, when the tide surges into the river mouths and meets the water pouring down, the lower levels on the banks face what feels like a tidal wave sweeping through them. Places with the narrowest river mouths suffer most: Looe has been inundated by most of the high tides this last few days. Think how depressing it is to clean up only to know that you are likely to be hit again twelve hours later. Most people living in these conditions have flood protection devices: boards to close off the lower parts of the doorways often reinforced by bags of sand are commonplace. Sadly it isnt as simple as all that. Underground, unseen (of course) the soil becomes totally saturated and new water arriving has to go somewhere. All too often, having carefully dealt with all the entrances, property owners find it pushing up through the floor. ...
Reclamation causes the direct loss of coastal habitat in the marine area that is reclaimed. It can also disrupt the sensitive ecosystems of transitional zones between the land and the sea which, in their undisturbed state, contain a diverse range of organisms and are very ecologically productive. These areas can provide important nursery areas for marine life and habitat for seabirds. Natural systems in these transitional zones can also be important for trapping sediment runoff and controlling erosion. For these reasons, reclamations and major structures should be located away from ecologically important inter-tidal and marine habitats such as salt marshes, shell banks, sea grasses, shellfish beds, mangroves and major fish habitats. They should also be located away from bird roosting, feeding and nesting sites.. Causeways can result in the direct loss or relocation of marine habitat through burial. They can also reduce wave action and the amount of flushing on the inland side of the structure, ...
A Difficult age for Believers. The twentieth century has brought many surprises in the realm of science. Man personally has begun to explore space, earths surface, the bottom and the extreme depths of the ocean. He has leaped forward to the scintillating promises of the creature comforts of an atomic age and has stood appalled before its horrors. Less expected and even more dramatic to the believer is the amazing resurgence of the study of the physical sciences in the light of the creation story. The atheistic tide of evolutionary thought had swept over the church like a giant tidal wave during the past one hundred fifty years. So destructive had been its onslaught that it appeared to many that the whole structure of the church was about to crumble, completely eroded away at its foundations.. During this troubled time many believers tenaciously had clung to their faith in the creation story in spite of repeated onslaughts of overwhelming ferocity. For many, the problem was one of grim survival ...
It is with great sorrow and concern that I write this today. I am sure it is not new news about the disasters that have fallen upon Japan. Three monumental disasters have happened all at once. The forth largest earthquake ever recorded is bad enough. But the 10 meter high tidal wave was equally devastating.…

Point A: Weve all heard them-those pithy sayings meant to get us through the rough patches. When it rains, it pours and the like.. Point B: As writers, weve all heard the impossible counterpoints, too. Write every day. EVERY. DAY.. What happens when Point A wipes out Point B? Im not talking about feeling swamped. Im talking about a tidal wave of life events that crashes over you and those you love with a destructive force that leaves you sobbing as you pick over the detritus. Whether it is one huge event, or a series of smaller events that just keep coming, you are utterly overwhelmed.. How do you manage work/life balance when that happens?. You dont.. And thats okay.. But how can I be a writer if Im not writing?. Because youre learning.. Neither life nor writing happen in a vacuum. The things that you are learning when youre in coping mode enrich both your person and your writing. I have so many writing friends forcing themselves to work through upheaval simply because they think ...
Ok, this is no joke!!!!!!!! We are due to be hit by a real frickin tidal wave! The sirens have been going off and there is no sleep to be had! im right on the coast, literally the closet building to the beach. i cant beleave my luck while here in hawaii. The last time chile was hit with a quake it was a 9 pointer, and it sent a huge 50 footer onto ewa beach that killed alot of people here in the late 60s. i beleave ill be fine but these buildings are not in great shape, and i mean it im right on the coast! Im not going to take their word for it but it is supposed to hit at 11:10 am my time. the siren is going to be going off at 6 am permanently until it hits. it could be a puddle wave or a massive bruiser, we wont know until it engulfs us, thats the best part. i will have my video camera mounted for this one. its a full moon which means surfers here surf all night. im not kidding they are in the water as i write this at 3:25 am. i think i may be the only sane person on this whole island. Sam wasnt happy. She must have screamed at a high decibel level for almost an hour before finally surrendering to the sandman.. Anxiety can be a bit like the kid youve tried to put to sleep but who keeps getting out of bed to torment you. You can do your best to coax her to sleep, but some days she just wont have any of it. She is wide awake and wants to come out and play, often at the most inconvenient times. When you try to shut the door on her, she can keep banging away loudly, screaming at the top of her lungs. In such instances, it can be hard to know whether to open the door and let her come out, or keep the door shut and listen to her banging, yelling and throwing a temper tantrum.. My own anxiety tends to come in waves, usually in the form of little blips. Twice in my life, the anxiety was more like a tidal wave. Life can be going along smoothly for long, uninterrupted periods of relative quiet until something abruptly life changing happens and the storm hits. Then the what ifs? ...
Unfortunately, it is too late to reverse the tidal wave of system failure that has been brewing for three decades now. It will soon end in a speculator implosion.. Whether that crisis commences before November 8th or soon thereafter is largely immaterial. If the Trump campaign has the good sense to focus on the gathering economic storm clouds, its the one thing that could catalyze an out-with-the-bums uprising across Flyover America on Election Day.. So let us reiterate our thesis even more vehemently. The idea that the American economy has recovered and is returning to an era of healthy prosperity is risible establishment propaganda. Its the present day equivalent of the Big Lie. Its the reason why Hillary Clintons campaign to validate and extend the current malefic Wall Street/Washington regime is so reprehensible.. In fact, the natural post-recession rebound of the nations capitalist economy has already exhausted itself after 84 months of tepid advance. Now, the massive headwinds of ...
Orissa, situated on the eastern cost of India along the Bay of Bengal, was first hit by a Cyclone on 18 Oct 1999 affecting the coastal districts of Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Gajapati and Balasore. As and when, the Arya Veer Dal Delhi Pradesh Officials got the first intimation about this huge disaster, an emergency Meeting was called at Arya Samaj Birla Lines, New Delhi. A team of AryaVeers (Arya Veer Dal Sewa Samiti) was formed under the leadership of Sh. Virender Arya. The team left for the affected areas, same day.On reaching the affected areas of Orissa, the Sewa Samiti found that subsequently, the State was hit by a Super Cyclone on 29 Oct 1999 with winds of more than 260 Kph, tidal waves rising 20 feet high and torrential rains. The Super Cyclone and its aftermath caused severe damage in the districts of Jagatsinghpur, Balasore, Cuttack, Puri, Nayagarh, Jajpur Kendrapada, Bhadrak and Khurda and moderate damage in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal and Keonjhar.. ...
The homosexual and transgender lobby was there in full force. The transgender bill took up the majority of time that day. As expected, there was emotion, charges of hatred, bigotry, discrimination, and their latest epithet, transparent transphobia.. MassResistance and others were there to counter the propaganda machine. The committee members blanched when we showed them the photos of whats already happening - and the fines and jail time that could go to anyone criticizing it. And we brought them individual copies of medical literature on gender identity disorder, and more. And we were interviewed by Fox TV, WBZ radio, WGBH TV, the Associated Press, and others.. But there was also a tidal wave of people wanting to give their testimony on one or more of the other 237 bills that day. Many of them were completely unaware that this was a transgender hearing, or that it was crammed with so many bills. It was a disaster waiting to happen and a lot of people were angry at the format. As we ...
There is a little bit of everything on the buffet, but the beefiest material in the show are the big operatic ballads and From Elvis in Memphis era angst-rockers. The 2004 Deluxe Edition 2-DVD set preserves the entire rehearsal/backup concert of January 12th (taped in case of broadcast mishap), during which Elvis staggers around and mumbles non sequitur stage patter. Hed do this out of pure musical delirium even in the 50s, but at the rehearsal show seems a little out of it, whether due to fatigue, energy conservation, or other factors. While not as tight as it could be, the rehearsal is not a disaster by any means and occasionally during this show he gets that faraway look in his eyes, loses himself in a song - or even just part of a song - and gives over to the sheer power of the music. He nails Burning Love to the wall, for example, despite forgetting the words and swapping verses around to compensate; Elvis stands like a shoreside Easter Island moai as that tidal wave of a song crashes ...
A Tidal Wave Approaching The momentum of collective events runs toward floodtide when there is a major transition from one whole cycle to another. The personal life stream runs in similar patterns. When youre getting ready to take off in a whole different direction, there is first a transition that is both immensely exciting and fantastically disturbing. You feel just about swept away by the oncoming changes and just before they really get going, the tension, the pressure, and the strain can tear you apart. You want to go with it, yet you yearn for sanctuary. This keen ambivalence gets loaded with desire, anticipation, memory pictures, and utopian visions. The mix is volatile. Learning how to ride this wave is such a great endeavour that it, in itself, becomes what it is all about. The consummate opportunity to open wide, but stay substantively firm and concentrated. Mastery or bust. The infinite future or wipe-out. A spine-tingler all the way. From Inside Degrees Elias Lonsdale. This is the ...

Its the summer blockbuster of all blockbusters. B.J. I suppose these aliens want to take over the world? Before they can demolish Pasadena, their spaceship is wiped out by a twister that flattens Ventura as thousands flee, screaming, Ai-yee! only to be fried to cinders in a huge explosion. What matters is the flaming holocaust that sweeps inexorably through Burbank as thousands flee, screaming, Ai-yee! Before they can get there, theyre saved by a humongous, 40-foot-high tidal wave that roars in from the ocean and puts out the fire by leveling Malibu, Pasadena and downtown Ontario, as thousands flee, scream . . . Probably the stupendous 9.3 earthquake that razes Griffith Park and frees hundreds of vicious beasts of prey who prowl out into the pitch-black night, causing thousands to flee . . . In a battle royal, the computerized
Once again at this point I found my heart rate was settled and, while I was not growing bored, I was getting antsy once more for something a bit faster. Slideshow, at first, did not seem to be going to deliver that. A slow, almost acoustic beginning, it seemed like it was going to be a pretty standard balled. I should have known better than to thing I had Rufus all figured out. The chorus of this song is incredible. Incredible! It comes out of nowhere, rising from the acoustic beginning like a tidal wave in a perfectly calm ocean. It builds and crashes back down, only to build again almost instantly. Oh, its an amazing moment! And the lyrics! Ah, these lyrics are fantastic. Tongue in cheek, in that uniquely Rufus way. It is a song unlike any other song I have ever heard, and that is a marvelous thing. This is what Rufus himself has to say in regards to the song:. That song is my most treasured caption right now, [Rufus] said. I feel like it accomplishes what I set out to do a long time ...
A life expectancy of 31 years.. ? If youre fifteen you have less than a 10 percent chance of living to age 35.. ? More than 50 percent of the population lives on 28 cents a day.. ? Half of the countrys population are under the age of 15.. Our team went to a medical clinic one afternoon to walk in the shoes of those caring for people infected with HIV. The clinic was old and worn out, medicine was in short supply, and understaffed. The waiting room was filled with patients. Some on the brink of death, others perfectly healthy. The nurses spoke about how the disease has affected their community, turning it into a continual flood of men and women coming for HIV tests, fearing the worst. On a typical day of testing, eight out of every 10 people will test positive for HIV.. Unbelievable. How many communities in Swaziland are also facing this sad reality? 46% is one thing, but 80% - Lord Jesus. What can be done? Who is left to help care for the tidal wave of orphans left all alone? In a few years ...
By: Alice Namuli Blazevic. The Internet continues to spawn new technologies that change the way people interact with their environment in significant ways, in areas as diverse as social relations, the way business is done, and economies. One such change is blockchain, a revolutionary technology that allows parties to transact directly with each other without the need for intermediaries, as central trusted third parties.. Uganda is experiencing a new technological tidal wave of new business models and novel legal questions. By far the most significant headline-grabbing development in 2017 and 2018 relates to the stunning rise of Blockchain technology. The technology has the potential to dramatically transform practices in significant segments of the Ugandan economy.. Cryptocurrency is the most popular example that is intrinsically tied to blockchain technology. It is also the most controversial one. Nonetheless, blockchain technology itself is not contentious, has worked flawlessly over the ...
