ITPR is a new device that allows positive pressure ventilation to be delivered as needed during CPR but is otherwise designed to maintain negative intrathoracic pressure. The device transforms the thoracic cavity into an active bellow, causing increases in venous return to the heart and simultaneously adequate gas exchange.. The results of this study demonstrated that using ITPR during CPR provided a new way to generate negative intrathoracic pressures during the decompression phase of CPR, thereby improving hemodynamics, blood flow, vital organ perfusion pressures, and short-term survival rates during VF cardiac arrest.1-6 The ITPR generated and sustained the negative ETP, a surrogate of intrathoracic pressure, independently of the intrinsic elastic properties of the chest wall or the quality of CPR performed. Moreover, negative ETP was maintained continuously relative to the rest of the body (except during the delivery of ventilations), thereby providing a vacuum to draw blood back to the ...

Pain in upper chest and throat - Pain in upper chest lower throat coughing up green discharge had a cold for a week lost my voice? Infection. A viral respiratory infection can cause voice loss (laryngitis), cough and even discolored discharge. These symptoms should improve after 7-10 days and voice rest is typically needed for longer. If symptoms are not improving in that time frame, are worsening or abrupt onset of high fever, a secondary bacterial infection could be present. A physician can assess to see if antibiotics are needed.

This year we have also provided some guidance on the requirements for publication of genetic association studies in Thorax. We noticed that many studies submitted have been underpowered or poorly designed, and we have published an editorial containing guidance on some of the key issues that need to be addressed when assessing the validity of genetic association studies. Already the standard of genetics papers in the journal has improved, and we urge our authors to study these requirements.8,9. We have continued to develop our educational features, including Airwaves at the front of the journal, Lung Alerts (short summaries of papers published in general and non-respiratory journals and serviced by our younger readers),10 and "Images in Thorax".6 This series has proved very popular and educational and we have received 111 high quality submissions for the Images series over the year. The series has been available free of charge since November 2003 in a collection on the Thorax website ...
Think of it like this: Imagine a vacuum sucking water into a container. At the end of the vacuums suction, there will be more blood in the container than would be under normal pressure. In this sense, the negative intrathoracic pressure of the chest during inspiration acts to draw more fluid into... ...
Day 1, we talk about the history, current research and the principles of L.A.S.T. We cover treatment of the cervical region and begin to have a detailed look at the thorax. A device and method treats pulmonary disease of a patient by expanding the thorax of the patient. Following surgical sternotomy, a separator is implanted in the thorax between the facing sternum surfaces resulting from the surgical sternotomy. The separator has a longitudinal dimension with opposing sidewalls extending along the longitudinal dimension and a width dimension. The facing surfaces of the sternum are engaged with the opposing sidewalls of the separator. Thereafter, the sternum is fixed to the separator for maintaining the sternum in engagement with the opposing sidewalls of the separator and thus maintaining the expanding condition of the thorax.

What Nature paid special attention to in constructing the thorax Since neither respiration nor speech can occur without the thorax, and since the heart first and the lung as well need to be protected by the thorax, it was necessary for the Maker of things to attend to four goals, as it were, in the fabric of the thorax: voice, respiration, and the size of the heart and the lung. The thorax, which has a more or less oval shape, is as large as the size of the lung warranted (figs. 12 and 13, Bk. 6). At the same time, the lung follows the shape of the thorax, not the opposite. In my account of the lung, I shall show with no great difficulty that like the liver, the spleen, or, to a degree, the brain, it required no particular shape,.. ...
Using half-sib analysis, we analysed the consequences of extreme rearing temperatures on genetic and phenotypic variations in the morphological and life-history traits of Drosophila ananassae. Paternal half-sib covariance contains a relatively small proportion of the epistatic variance and lacks the dominance variance and variance due to maternal effect, which provides more reliable estimates of additive genetic variance. Experiments were performed on a mass culture population of D. ananassae collected from Kanniyakumari (India). Two extremely stressful temperatures (18°C and 32°C) and one standard temperature (25°C) were used to examine the effect of stressful and non-stressful environments on the morphological and life-history traits in males and females. Mean values of various morphological traits differed significantly among different temperature regimens in both males and females. Rearing at 18°C and 32°C resulted in decreased thorax length, wing-to-thorax (w/t) ratio, sternopleural ...

... has two embedded sensors: one measuring acceleration and another measuring force. A sophisticated microprocessor continuously measures both of these parameters during each compression, and special algorithms convert the collected data into meaningful information.. The accelerometer measures the depth and rate of chest wall movement during each compression and converts it into distance travelled. The force sensor measures the force applied during CPR and is used for several purposes, the most important being to detect that pressure is not fully released between compressions i.e. provide feedback if the responder is leaning during CPR.. CPRmeter 2 utilizes similar Q-CPR technology found in the Philips MRx, Philips XL+ and Philips FR3 defibrillators.. ...

I take one last look at the village, recalling the many days I have spent among the humans. I climb the canyon face to the upper cave and take my place upon the platform the tribe has built for me. I steady myself and place my claw against the flexible gap between my prothorax and head. The serrated edge of chitin easily passes into my softer tissue and opens up my circulation to the air. My lymph flows down my thorax and spills onto the ground at my feet. There is some pain, but it is over quickly and I inhabit darkness.. I arrive with the booming of a titanic storm muffled by the fluid surrounding me. I rise within the water, my body dragging against joints of metal, tearing my cowl, exposing me to the boiling liquid. I am heaved upon a ramp, tilting as if the surrounding room has partially collapsed. I am within a spire of unknown construction, gray light and storm clouds are visible through a hole in the ceiling. Nearby, an unseen ocean crashes ...
Dumbbell flyes interact the upper chest muscles and also tones the arms. Accomplish this on inclined or rejected bench and you will see good results either way! To do dumbbell flyes, are lying face up on the bench. Retain the feet flat on the floor together with hold each dumbbell which has an overhand grip. Slowly press the actual dumbbells upwards. Extend your current arms; they should be facing each other. Now, slightly bend your current elbows, lowering the dumbbells about each side.. Now to do the lift up, with the elbows bent somewhat, push the dumbbells in place. The movement will engage the chest and shoulders. As soon as the dumbbells are slightly through the chest, hold the position. At this moment, slowly move the dumbbells downhill. Do the same position once or twice. If you dont have a trainer to assist you during the lift, keep the weight loads close to your chest.. ...
Swallowing is a complex act that involves the mouth, throat area, and esophagus (the tube that moves food to the stomach). Many nerves and muscles control how these body parts work. Part of swallowing is voluntary, which means you are aware of controlling the action. However, much of swallowing is involuntary. Problems at any point -- from chewing food and moving it into the back of the mouth to moving the food into the stomach -- can result in painful swallowing. Chest pain, the feeling of food stuck in the throat, or heaviness or pressure in the neck or upper chest while eating are often the result of swallowing difficulties. ...

It runs in my family. My mother, grandfather and brother all had heart attacks between ages 49 and 77, so I tried to be proactive about my heart health. I have always been conscious about eating and cooking healthy and managing my weight. I saw my doctor regularly - no cholesterol or blood pressure problems. I took a low-dose statin as a preventive measure and maintained a clean bill of health - or so it seemed.. Then strange symptoms showed up, symptoms I ignored for too long. Fatigue at first, then aching in my upper back, upper chest, neck and jaw. I chocked it up to pinched nerves from marathon sewing sessions, a favorite pastime of mine. Over the next few weeks, my symptoms grew harder to dismiss. With mild dizziness and shortness of breath just going upstairs, it finally dawned on me that things were getting worse, so I called my doctors office and spoke to his nurse.. ...
So the past few weeks of my health has been both good and bad at the same time. The bad is I have been having diarrhea. Around 2 Mondays ago I actually had to go to the bathroom 7 times in one day! On that day I took a warm bath and actually felted cured (for about a day). The other side effect was I had a pain in my backside which has happened before but made worse by the fact that I was always having to go to the bathroom. The only other recent symptom I have noticed is when I lay down sometimes my upper chest hurts a little (however I think this too has past. My gastroenterologist did some blood work and a stool analysis and noticed my white blood cell count made him "nervous". He scheduled a colonoscopy which I happily did today. The prep is always the worst part. At 5:30 PM I started by prep and by 8:30 P.M. I finished 6 glasses of Gatorade + Miralax + the 4 pills. Honestly the first one seemed like twice as many liquids. I did my first one on November 30, 2011 and this one was done today ...

Results Eighty-two (27%) of the 300 rheumatologists responded. Three of the responders (4%) stated that they measured chest expansion in every patient whereas 72 (87%) said that they performed the test only in patients suspected to have ankylosing spondylitis. Seven rheumatologists (9%) reported that they never measured chest expansion.. There was a good intra and inter-observer agreement in chest expansion measurements as judged by a difference of less than 1 cm in 80% of the calculations. A chest expansion of less than 2.5 cm had a sensitivity of 23% in patients with AS whereas it had a specificity of 49% (2 patients with RA, 1 with SLE and 5 HC had values below 2.5 cm). There was a significant correlation between vital capacity and chest expansion only in male patients with AS (r = 0.51, p = 0.005). Chest expansion decreased with age in all groups (r2 = 0.083, F = 0.0001). There was no relationship between the chest expansion either with gender or with BMI, both among the patients and the ...

Thoracoabdominal asynchrony (TAA) is defined as the no coincident motion of ribcage (RC) and abdomen (AB) and considered as relevant clinically. TAA has been estimated through respiratory inductive plethysmography (RIP) and, more recently, optoelectronic plethysmography (OEP). However, the agreement of TAA measurements with both RIP and OEP remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To compare TAA values during inspiration via OEP and RIP. METHODS: 8 healthy subjects (4 male, 34.2±8.7yrs and FEV1 91.8±7.2%pred) performed 2 cycle ergometer sessions with 30 minutes between them in a random order. TAA was evaluated in different phases of exercise, 3 minutes of each one: at rest, 40% (L40), 60% (L60) and 80% (L80) of maximal workload obtained in a previous day. TAA was calculated between RC (upper RC in OEP) and AB through phase angle using the Lissajous approach (Agostini and Mognoni, 1966). The flow at the mouth was assessed with a pneumotacograph. It was analyzed a mean cycle of 5 last breaths of every phase. ...

The biomechanical response of a finite element model of the human thorax and a protective body armor system was studied under impact loading from a projectile. The objective of the study was to create a viable finite element model of the human thorax. The model was validated by comparing the results of tests of body armor systems conducted on cadavers to results obtained from finite element analysis. A parametric study was undertaken to determine the essential components of the model. The results from this investigation determined that the path of force propagation from a body armor system to the thorax upon bullet impact is directly through the vest to the sternum and then through the skeleton to the rest of the body. Thus, any parameters that affect the components in this pathway were essential to the model. This included the muscles, their geometries, material properties, and viscosity, as well as the Youngs modulus of the sternochondral cartilage and the bones themselves ...

The absence of Antp+ function during embryogenesis results in the larval mesothorax exhibiting characteristics of the prothorax and an ensuing lethality; the loss of Antp+ function in the development of the adult thorax causes specific portions of the leg, wing and humeral imaginal discs to develop abnormally. Every Antp mutation, however, does not cause all of these developmental defects. Certain mutant alleles disrupt humeral and wing disc development without affecting leg development, and they are not deficient for the wild-type function required during embryogenesis. Other Antp mutations result in abnormal legs, but do not alter dorsal thoracic development. Mutations of each type can complement to produce a normal adult fly, which suggests that there are at least two discrete functional units within the locus (Abbott, 1986). Ectopic expression of homeotic genes, Dfd, Scr and Antp, results in the disruption of the developing PNS in the abdomen. Thus homeotic genes have specific roles in ...
Adult Description: Adults are 6-12 mm long, chestnut brown color, the entire body is thinly covered with long grayish setae. The head and thorax have shallow pits and square-shaped frons. There is a transverse ridge between the brownish-black antennae. The male antennae are slightly longer than the body, whereas the female antennae are about two-thirds of the body length. The scape of the antennae are coarsely punctured. The prothorax is wider than its length, and the two sides are rounded with no lateral spikes. The prothorax has some hardly visible raised tubercles. The ventral portion of the thorax and the femur of all appendages are brownish-red and thickened.. Larva Description: Larvae are about 10 mm long, light yellow in color, and the body is slightly flat. The mouthparts are blackish-brown. The pronotum has a pair of brown markings. The thoracic legs are receded. Pupae are 7-10 mm long, oval shaped, and cream colored. Antennae are kept close to the sides of the body and bend back near ...

It has long been recognized that minor minute-to-minute fluctuations in blood pressure occur in healthy individuals, and that many factors influence these fluctuations. Perhaps the easiest to observe is the influence of posture. Assumption of upright posture from a recumbent position results in a small but measurable decrease in systolic blood pressure (SBP) due primarily to a redistribution of blood volume into the lower abdomen, buttocks and legs under the influence of gravity. In most people, this decrease in blood pressure is very slight and evanescent, as a whole host of response mechanisms are immediately engaged to maintain blood pressure. Chief among these responses is the baroreflex constellation,1 in which stretch receptors in the carotid artery in the neck, and major vessels and structures in the thorax, quickly sense decreases in arterial pressure and central thoracic volume and trigger a coordinated increase in activity of the sympathetic nervous system, decrease in activity of the ...

When patients experience shock or, in extreme cases, cardiac arrest, they require enhanced blood flow to provide sufficient oxygen to vital organs. One way to improve outcomes in states of low blood flow is to enhance negative pressure in the chest by using intrathoracic pressure regulation (IPR), an innovative therapy that leverages the bodys own physiology to improve blood flow.
The body plan of all bilaterian animals is composed of three morphologically distinct regions along the anteroposterior axis: the head, trunk and tail. In insects, the true head comprises three segments (antennal, labrum and intercalary) plus the anterior acron (Jürgens et al., 1986). The cephalopharyngeal cuticle of the larva is unique in that it is often pigmented and has a crinkled morphology. Three gnathal segments (mandibular, maxillary and labium) are thought to have derived from the trunk (Snodgrass, 1938) but have acquired specific head-like characteristics. The trunk is formed by three thoracic (prothorax, mesothorax and metathorax) and eight abdominal segments (A1 to A8), each characterised in the larva by alternating anterior denticles and posterior naked cuticle. The tail comprises three segments plus the terminal telson.. The morphological diversity along the anteroposterior axis of vertebrates and invertebrates relies in part on the activity of Hox genes (Kaufman et al., 1990; ...

Well, it is your birthday Thorax. I thought Id get something nice for you. Spike said as he twiddled his claws. Thorax looked at the box once more. It certainly looked interesting, however he was curious as to what kind of present was in there. He took the box and sniffed it, just to see what it smelled like. The aroma of cinnamon, sugar, and creamy frosting filled his nostrils which activated his salivary glands in his mouth. He took his hoof, and with it he opened the box slowly. What he saw made not only his mouth water even more, but also made his eyes widen with surprise. The interior of the box contained a nine inch long, five inch thick cinnamon roll. The roll was ...

This hook is invoked when a git checkout is run after having updated the worktree. The hook is given three parameters: the ref of the previous HEAD, the ref of the new HEAD (which may or may not have changed), and a flag indicating whether the checkout was a branch checkout (changing branches, flag=1) or a file checkout (retrieving a file from the index, flag=0). This hook cannot affect the outcome of git checkout.. ...
The difficulties in quantifying the 3D form and spatial relationships of the skeletal components of the ribcage present a barrier to studies of the growth of the thoracic skeleton. Thus, most studies to date have relied on traditional measurements such as distances and indices from single or few ribs. It is currently known that adult-like thoracic shape is achieved early, by the end of the second postnatal year, with the circular cross-section of the newborn thorax transforming into the ovoid shape of adults; and that the ribs become inclined such that their anterior borders come to lie inferior to their posterior. Here we present a study that revisits growth changes using geometric morphometrics applied to extensive landmark data taken from the ribcage. We digitized 402 (semi) landmarks on 3D reconstructions to assess growth changes in 27 computed tomography-scanned modern humans representing newborns to adults of both sexes. Our analyses show a curved ontogenetic trajectory, resulting from different
For the last 5 weeks (it began a week after I quit smoking) I have had a persistent tightness and feeling of discomfort in my chest, I just feel like I cant fill my lungs to full capacity and take a slow deep breath. It feels tight in my upper chest and it also feels like I hit a kind of wall in my lungs when I try and breathe deeply. The discomfort is most pronounced in the left side of my chest. I also get pains that come and go, some days I will experience little pain and other days the pain will be present almost all the time. These include aches down the left side of the chest, sharp and or dull pain in the middle of the chest, and or a tingling painful sensation in the middle of my chest. The pain will last for anywhere from 5 minutes to half an hour at a time, if I sit or lay down it becomes more managable. The tightness and discomfort in my chest is constant and I have had no relief from these symptoms for over 5 weeks now.. I also have a persistent productive cough bringing up white ...

I just had to switch to 2CheckOut because of a problem with my Paysystems account and have a question for any 2CO users out there... I use ClientExec, so dont really know what variables it passes to the 2CO system when sending a client to the payment screen. I was wondering if I need to mark orders shipped for them to be processed (and for me to get paid). Has anyone had any experience with this?

One of the two vessels which are formed as terminal branches of the pulmonary trunk and convey unaerated blood to the lungs. The two pulmonary arteries differ in length and anatomy. The right pulmonary artery is the longer of the two. It passes transversely across the midline in the upper chest and passes below the aortic arch to enter the hilum of the right lung as part of its root. The left pulmonary artery is the shorter of the two terminal branches of the pulmonary trunk. It pierces the pericardium (the sac around the heart) and enters the hilum of the left lung. ...
Very important not to let your upper chest lag behind your lower chest from a physique point of view. A lot of bodybuilders actually do ALL their chest work on an incline. However, theres no sense trying to remove the lower portion because 1) your pecs dont work that way and 2) a lagging lower chest wont look good either ...

We were laying on our back making our stomachs go in and out (try doing that for 20 minutes) when she came over to me and unsnapped the top of my uniform. She then took her pointer finger and pressed with that one finger somewhere in the center of my upper chest. It hurt like a knife. She smiled and said "good," and then moved her finger down a few inches and did the same thing which resulted in the same reaction only this time I removed her finger. She told me to imagine the pain going doing my left arm and out my fingers. She was apply pressure to pressure points on my body. In 10 days of yoga, I will feel no pain and be in better condition. Hi - I am a 27 year old female. I have a lump in my upper chest - a little below my collar bone - on the right side of my body. I found it about 3 weeks ago and it doesnt seem to be going away. It is painless & I think I noticed it when I was changing one day. I havent been sick & dont know how long its been there. I am also getting these tiny red spots on my arm & chest. Also I am really itchy everywhere! Some nights its hard to fall asleep because I am so itchy. Im sure its nothing, but should I go to the doctor to get these symptoms checked out? Could it be lymphoma? As for my family history - my aunt is the only one who has lymphoma (at the age of 38). My mother had breast cancer & my father had bladder cancer ...
The feature of this design is really the rounded neck band, the button used to fasten it (its actually sewn down - theres no buttonhole), and the resulting keyhole at the upper chest which I presume is supposed to be sexy without being revealing. The button is a spare that I had from when I was making my spring coat. I didnt do a great job of making the ends of the band perfectly rounded, but itll have to do. I spent so much time top-stitching, taking in the torso (then re-topstitching) and putting in the zip only to rip it out again, that after a while I just wanted to finish it and move on with my life ...
A portacath system consists of two parts, the port (reservoir) and the catheter (tube).. The port which is a small rounded device made of titanium metal is implanted under the skin in the upper chest area. It has one chamber covered by a plastic membrane through which a needle can be inserted to deliver medication or take out blood..
