It is sometimes said that when science and theology conflict, this is because we are dealing with bad science or bad theology or both bad science and bad theology. This may be in fact true of a number of apparent conflicts between science and theology.. But even if this is in fact true, one shouldnt elevate such an observation into a necessarily true principle. Here is one reason to think this. We learn from history that good science is often wrong. (Can one say the same about theology? That may depend on whether one restricts to the theology of a true religion, and on how speculative one allows theology to be and still count as "good".) Unless science and theology have completely logically disjoint subject matter, so that no proposition of science can possibly entail or be incompatible with a proposition of theology, it seems quite possible to have a case where a proposition p is such that (a) p is good science, (b) p is false, and (c) not-p is good theology.. I think I would argue, however, that theology is not learning any of these modes of thought from science, but rather that science first learned them from theology, and is now having to re-learn them. It is also true that theology is re-learning what it once knew. Both science and theology are recovering more careful modes of thought that were challenged by the Enlightenment.. I think the answer is that natural theology has a real voice but that it is ineffectual at leading people to God, not because it is lacking, but because mankind is dead and thus unable to hear it. The passage in Rom. 1 isnt telling us how people come to believe in God. Instead, it is telling us why people who dont come to God are culpable in their unbelief. It never hints that creation (natural theology) is actually effectual in leading anybody to believe. But if scientific rigor could be brought to bear in natural theology, then it would be simply a matter of mathematical proof (such as we see in ID) to force people to hear it. It would be effectual. He matriculated from the Scots College in Sydney, New South Wales in 1975 and received his degree in Theology from the University of Athens in 1980. He received a diploma in Byzantine Music from the Greek Conservatory of Music in 1979 and was awarded a research scholarship to St. Vladimirs Theological Seminary in 1982. He completed his doctoral studies in Patristics at the University of Oxford in 1983. Chryssavgis read patristic theology at Oxford. His work and writing have focused on medieval theology, as well as on the history of the Eastern Church. He holds degrees in theology and sacred music. I agree that the issue of the law is very important in the movement towards any post-critical "retrieve" of theology. I dont, however, see the basic dialectic between the eternity of the law (Thomist tradition) or the divine will authority of the law (late medieval scholasticism) as that important in what happened. Both of these camps regard the law as something over and against human beings, something to which they must conform if they are somehow not to be sinning. Finally, it makes little difference salvifically whether one is failing to conform to an eternal law or to a willed divine precept. The real problem is that after Kant, it made no sense to think of God as a being who could possess any law over and against the noblest sentiments in human being. If God is not a being, who in His being, places law (of whatever kind) upon His creation, then human beings are not beings, who in their being have divine law at issue for them.
