Resveratrol exhibits anti-tumor properties against different types of cancer. In this study, several polyhydroxylated resveratrol derivatives were prepared with the aim of discovering new leading compounds with clinical potential for human colon cancer chemotherapy. Among these compounds, 3,3,4,5,5-pentahydroxy-. trans-stilbene (PHS) displayed the most potent cytotoxicity and triggered apoptosis in HT-29 cells as evidenced by increased poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) cleavage, elevated levels of cytoplasmic nucleosomes and DNA fragmentation. Further mechanistic analysis revealed that PHS-induced apoptosis was caspase-dependent and mediated by its pro-oxidative action through up-regulation of reactive oxidative species generation and depletion of intracellular glutathione. © 2010 Elsevier B.V ...
Peki (Caryocar brasiliense Camb.) is a Brazilian fruit with an extremely high b -carotene content, but the b -carotene is unstable under dry storage conditions. This work reports on the product development and stability of freeze-dried peki fruit pulp. Freeze-dried products were made by adding alcohols (ethanol and isopropyl alcohol; at concentrations of 0, 5 and 10 mL/100 mL of extract) and sugars (sucrose and fructose; at concentrations of 0, 5 and 10 g/100 mL of extract) to the peki fruit pulps followed by freeze- drying. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the microstructure of the freeze-dried products by visualizing the crystallized forms. The product hardness and total carotenoid content following the different treatments were measured using a texture analyzer and a spectrophotometer, respectively. The stability of these foods was evaluated by their water sorption during their storage in various relative humidity environments at 25 C. There were characteristic differences in ...

Rated 1 out of 5 by jacwo2 from not the correct rose The 2 plants I received were absolutely covered in thorns. LARGE thorns at that. I called for a refund since thats not typical for this variety (or what the description listed). I thought 1 of them was dead, but planted it anyways. Its alive, but its very stunted and had little growth. The other grew well over 8 feet in 1 summer. The flowers that bloom do not look like any picture Ive ever seen of this variety. The color is strange and inconsistent, and the flowers are closer to a single rose, not fluffy. Im not sure what this plant is, but the 1 is growing well. Sometimes I would snap a branch trying to weave it thru my arbor (while trying not to poke myself w/thorns), and at least 2 more branches come out of the broken spot. It doesnt seem fussy or need lots of water. Didnt have a problem w/spots, either. If youre looking for a good climber that doesnt need much attention, Id give it a chance. If youre looking for zephrine ...
This species is distinguished from its congeners in having the following set of characters: two rows of thorns (strongly hooked and gradually becoming somewhat embedded toward first dorsal fin origin) on mid-dorsum of tail; no thorns at the anterior part of scapular region; thorns on the orbital, nape and scapular regions not encircled by light yellow or white pigment; dorsal surface covered with minute dermal denticles of uniform size and shape, no obvious larger dermal denticles (smooth to touch) (Ref. 86259). ...
Note: Species of small, thorny tree or spreading bush producing an edible fruit; the acidic fruit that is botanically a many-seeded pale yellow oblong berry. Its young leaves have a decidedly reddish tint; later they turn green. In some varieties, the young branches of the lemon are angular; some have sharp thorns at the axils of the leaves. The large flowers have a sweet odor. Reddish-tinted in the bud, the petals are white above and reddish purple below ...

Worldwide, the annual plant biomass production exceeds animal biomass production by a factor of about 10. Thus, plant detritus is much more important in terms of amount and availability for nutrient release through the action of microorganisms and animals (decomposition: see above) than animal detritus. Accordingly, the ecological significance of vegetal matter decomposition has received a great deal of attention, but the decomposition of animal products (see below) has received relatively little. Among plant detritus, leaf litter may be the most prominent type of detritus in most ecosystems (see above), but depending on the biotope considered needle litter (in boreal forests), monocot litter (in grasslands and wetlands), or algal and angiosperm wrack (in coastal areas) may comprise the detrital pool predominantly or even entirely.. Plant litter of whatever origin (see above) serves as substratum and food source for diverse microorganisms, be it bacteria, yeasts and fungi, microalgae, or ...

This large tree can grow between 27 m (Singh et al. 2014) and 40 m (Raju et al. 2011) in height. The species is predominantly found within dry, evergreen or semi-evergreen dipterocarp forest. It can also occur within lowland dipterocarp forests, Schima-bamboo forest and on limestone (Chua et al. 2010). This species is highly tolerant of dry conditions, heavy drought and small fires (Nakamura 2006). The species is considered self-incompatible (Raju et al. 2011). Within India flowering occurs between December and April and fruiting follows between March and May (Singh et al. 2014). Unlike other dipterocarp species, Shorea roxburghii fruits, flowers, sheds and gains leaves annually (Raju et al. 2011). It is an insect pollinated tree, mostly by bees and less frequently by wasps and butterflies. It is a food source for these insects. The species exhibits low seed germination; one experimental plot within India showed only 8% germination. This is often due to fruit and seed infestation or predation by ...
