Construction methods and materials in the hot, humid, wet region of northern Thailand are often rudimentary. Shelters are left susceptible to harsh weather conditions, and weather-worn materials revealing gaping holes into buildings are common sights. Therefore, better insulation and more durable wall materials are needed in such underdeveloped areas prone to extreme weather.; Phenolic foam warrants consideration as a building material because of several characteristic features. It is lightweight and has low thermal conductivity, allowing for applications as a building insulation material. Moreover, the material has low flammability, low smoke toxicity, and is cost-competitive with conventional foams, such as polyurethane and expanded polystyrene (EPS).; This paper evaluated the potential of using phenolic foam as a building material in northern Thailand. Phenolic foams mechanical and insulation properties, sustainable benefits, and costs were evaluated when used as an insulation material in ...

Abstract Several case reports of autochthonous leishmaniasis in Thailand have been published since 1996. Most of the previous cases presented with visceral leishmaniasis (VL) and were mostly reported in southern part of Thailand. Recently, it has been evident that Leishmania martiniquensis is the main cause of Leishmania infection in Thailand. However, Leishmania siamensis (PCM2 Trang isolate) was found to be of a separate lineage with restricted distribution in southern Thailand and also a cause of disseminated dermal and visceral leishmaniasis in one published case. Here we report the first patient from central Thailand with human immunodeficiency virus infection presenting with disseminated dermal leishmaniasis. Polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing analysis (large subunit of RNA polymerase II and 18S ribosomal RNA internal transcribed spacer 1) from the tissue biopsy sample revealed the pathogen sequences to be highly homologous to PCM2 Trang strain previously reported from southern Thailand.

2018, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. Objective: Microscopic residual tumor (R1 resection) may have a significant negative impact on prognosis of patients with adenocarcinoma of stomach and esophagogastric junction. Results of R1 resection on survival and recurrence patterns have not yet been thoroughly investigated in Thailand. The aim of this study was to study the oncological outcomes of R1 resection after curative intended surgery. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients who underwent curative intended surgery from 2005 to 2013 at Siriraj Hospital. Results: 162 patients underwent curative intended gastrectomy with radical lymphadenectomy. 122 (75.3%) patients received R0 resection (non-residual group), 40 (24.7%) patients had microscopic residual tumor (residual group). Microscopic residual tumor was associated with tumor size (p=0.008), tumor extension (p=0.028), pT-stage (p=0.012), pN-stage (p=0.012), and AJCC/TNM stage (p,0.001). ...

So its been a while since I last updated my blog. Apologies to all. I will try to summarise the last month as best I can.. I arrived in Thailand on the 10th Feb to work with the admin/tech team of CouchSurfing.com. Having landed in Bangkok, I took a domestic flight up to Chiang Mai. As luck would have it, I arrived on a Sunday, just in time for the Sunday Night market. I decided to delay a night here to sample the sights and sounds of this town that I have never been to. Chiang Mai is an ancient city that used to be the capital of one of the northern Siamese kingdoms. Founded around 1296 by King Mengrai, it was originally named Nopphaburi Si Nakhonping Chiangmai. After being captured by the Burmese, it was finally incorporated into Thailand in 1774 when King Thaksin recaptured the area that is now Chiang Mai province. Since then Chaing Mai has become an important local economic hub in northern Thailand, where locals come to engage in trade and work. It is also an important destination in the ...
Background: Osteosarcoma is the most common bone cancer in children, responsible for a high rate ofamputation and death. This is the first long-term, population-based, epidemiologic and survival study inThailand. Objective: To study the incidence and survival rates of pediatric osteosarcoma in Khon Kaen.Method: Childhood osteosarcoma cases (0-19 years) diagnosed between 1985-2010 were reviewed. The datawere retrieved from the population-based data set of the Khon Kaen Cancer Registry and medical recordsfrom Srinagarind Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University. All cases were censored until the endof April 2012. The age-standardized incidence rate (ASR) was calculated using the standard method. Survivalexperience was analyzed using the standard survival function (STATA 9.0) and presented with a Kaplan-Meiercurve. Results: 58 cases were enrolled. The overall ASR was 14.1 per million. Males and females were equallyaffected. The peak incidence was for 15-19 year-olds in both sexes (ASR=10.4 per

In 2004, long-simmering resentment in the southern-most Muslim-majority provinces burst into violence in Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala provinces. All are off the beaten tourist trail, although the eastern rail line from Hat Yai to Sungai Kolok (gateway to Malaysias east coast) passes through the area and has been disrupted several times by attacks. Hat Yai (Thailands largest city after Bangkok and its Nonthaburi suburbs) in Songkhla has also been hit by a series of related bombings, however the main cross-border rail line connecting Hat Yai and Butterworth (on the west coast) has not been affected, and none of the islands or the west coast beaches have been targeted. In September 2006, three foreigners were killed in bombings in Hat Yai. Some rebel groups have threatened foreigners, but while targets have included hotels, karaoke lounges and shopping malls, westerners have not been singled out for attacks. ...
BACKGROUND: The prevalence of alcohol consumption among Thais is high, around 30%. We quantified the relationship between alcohol drinking and mortality in a rural population in the most populous region of Thailand. METHODS: The data were from the Khon Kaen Cohort Study. About 24 000 Thai adults were enrolled between 1990 and 2001, and follow-up for vital status continued until March 16, 2012. Mortality data were obtained from the Bureau of Policy and Strategy, Ministry of the Interior, Thailand. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to analyze the association between alcohol drinking and death, controlling for age, education level, and smoking, and floating absolute risk was used to estimate the 95% confidence intervals of hazard ratios. RESULTS: In total, 18 457 participants (5829 men and 12 628 women) were recruited, of whom 3155 died (1375 men and 1780 women) during a median follow-up period of 13.6 years. Although alcohol drinking was common (64% of men and 25% of women), the amounts consumed
This study demonstrated that the Thai version of the ACE (ACE-T) is a valid and reliable cognitive assessment tool in the detection of MCI and early dementia in the Thai population.. The ACE-T exhibits good sensitivity and specificity in detecting MCI, and excellent sensitivity and specificity for dementia. These diagnosis accuracies are comparable with the original ACE III study,1 which has a sensitivity of 1.0 and specificity of 0.96 in dementia detection. In concurrence with the findings of the Thai version of the MMSE study,8 our study showed that the ACE-T was superior to the TMMSE. The TMMSE exhibited lower sensitivities in detecting dementia; in people with more than 6 years of education, sensitivity is 0.92 and specificity is 0.93, and for people with less than 6 years of education, sensitivity is 0.57 and specificity is 0.94.. In the original ACE, the mean total score for the NC was 95.4, and the recommended cut-off score for diagnosing dementia was 88,1 while that of the Thai ACE was ...

Chiang Mai (เชียงใหม่) is the hub of Northern Thailand. With a population of over 170,000 in the city proper (but more than 1 million in the metropolitan area), it is Thailands fifth-largest city. Located on a plain at an elevation of 316 m, surrounded by mountains and lush countryside, it is much greener and quieter than the capital, and has a cosmopolitan air and a significant expat population, factors which have led many from Bangkok to settle permanently in this "Rose of the North".
For centuries, wherever Thai Buddhists have made their homes, statues of the Buddha have provided striking testament to the role of Buddhism in the lives of the people. |i>The Buddha in Lanna|/i> offers the first in-depth historical study of the Thai tradition of donation of Buddha statues. Drawing on palm-leaf manuscripts and inscriptions, many never previously translated into English, the book reveals the key roles that Thai Buddha images have played in the social and economic worlds of their makers and devotees from the fifteenth to twentieth centuries.|p>Author Angela Chiu introduces stories from chronicles, histories, and legends written by monks in Lanna, a region centered in todays northern Thailand. By examining the stories themes, structures, and motifs, she illuminates the complex conceptual and material aspects of Buddha images that influenced their functions in Lanna society. Buddha images were depicted as social agents and mediators, the focal points of pan-regional political-religious

The process of commercialisation-diversification in the highlands of upper northern Thailand and the accompanying dismissal of self-subsistence are documented based on the findings from seven case studies carried out in different agricultural and social situations during the past decade. The characteristics of the key driving forces powering this agrarian transition such as rapid economic growth, decrease in the share of labour employed in the agriculture, urbanization and changes in food consumption patterns, and improved communication infrastructures, are presented in the Thai context. The environmental impact of these profound agrarian transformations on the degradation of key renewable resources, particularly soil erosion, is assessed. Their socio-economic consequences on an extensive differentiation among farming households and equity issues are also discussed. Finally the authors draw several lessons from this Thai experience that illustrate the very strong adaptive capacity of small highland
ABSTRACTBiomass burning (BB) frequently occurs in SouthEast Asia (SEA), which significantly affects the air quality and could consequently lead to adverse health effects. The aim of this study was to characterize particulate matter (PM) and black carbon (BC) emitted from BB source regions in SEA and their potential of deposition in the alveolar region of human lungs. A 31-day characterization of PM profiling was conducted at the Doi Ang Khang (DAK) meteorology station in northern Thailand in March 2013. Substantial numbers of PM (10147 ± 5800 # cm–3) with a geometric mean diameter (GMD) of 114.4 ± 9.2 nm were found at the study site. The PM of less than 2.5 µm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) hourly-average mass concentration was 78.0 ± 34.5 µg m–3, whereas the black carbon (BC) mass concentration was 4.4 ± 2.6 µg m–3. Notably, high concentrations of nanoparticle surface area (100.5 ± 54.6 µm2 cm–3) emitted from biomass
