African Americans were excluded from employment in the Southern textile industry for most of this century. Before 1965, they made up little more than two percent of its employees. At first glance this fact is unsurprising since economic life throughout the South was strictly segregated, with blacks occupying poorly paid laborer jobs whenever they worked in the same industries with whites. But from an economic point of view the exclusion of African Americans from textiles is surprising indeed. The textile industry was the largest manufacturing industry in the South and one of the most competitive. Most production jobs in the mills required little skill. ...

Objective. According to the Department of Statistics at the beginning of 2003, 551 textile industry and garment enterprises operated in Lithuania. The purpose of the study was to evaluate morbidity among workers in textile industry enterprises in Kaunas and analyze the data obtained in relation to sex, age, profession, and occupational health hazards. Material and methods. A sick-leave-based case-control study was conducted in the units of four textile enterprises where 1842 workers were employed. Data were categorized in relation to sex, profession, and kind of sickness. Age was grouped in the following way: under 29 years, 30-39 years, 40-49 years, and over 50 years. Results. In the period of survey, 1482 cases of sick leave were reported in the enterprises where 1842 workers were employed. The main cause of absence because of sickness was respiratory diseases - 37.3% (30.27 cases per 100 workers), nursing took the second place -17.0% (13.76 cases per 100 workers). Accidents and injuries made up 9.3%
The incidence of respiratory symptoms among workers occupationally exposed to cotton dust was studied. There is a constant threat to the environment in terms of the pollution which is enhancing day by day. The impact of the pollution in the atmosphere, lithosphere and hydrosphere cannot be ignored. A lot of man made activities such as domestic, industrial, agriculture, shipping, radio-active, aquaculture waste activities are developing the negative impact on the water body by enhancing the contaminants present in the water. Textile industries are one of the type which are being counted as the top polluting industry. There are a number of harmful dyes which are present in the effluents from the textile industries and should not be discharged directly to the water body. These effluents are required to be treated for the removal of all the harmful dyes available in it before discharging it to the outer water body.. There are a number of processes available for the removal of textile dyes from the effluents such as such as trickling filtration, activated sludge process, oxidation ditch, oxidation ...

Where are the organized women workers? Alice Kessler-Harris asked in 1975.1 Her question unleashed an unabating torrent of provocative studies of proletarian women in a number of countries, particularly in the United States and Europe.2 This deluge of solid research notwithstanding, activist women, to paraphrase Anne Firor Scott, continue to be seen and not seen.3 Pre-World War II Japanese women textile workers suffer the. same,...if not indeed a more pervasive, invisibility. When they are not generally overlooked, they are pitied as passive victims incapable of acting on their own initiative. When instances of activism are so obvious they cannot be ignored (as when silk reelers carried out a major strike in 1885), they are dismissed as unique, aberrant events. Womens failure to become the backbone of an enduring union movement confirms the conventional view of them as passive. Their gender, it is argued-or, as one scholar suggests, their youth4-made them hard to organize. Further research on womens

NCTO further agrees with President Trump that all U.S. free trade agreements should be periodically reviewed on a performance basis.. As for any new trade deals, NCTO supports President Trumps preference for individual bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs) over multilaterals. Moreover, any new FTA targets should be limited to countries that trade in a fair, reciprocal manner. NCTO would oppose any FTAs with non-market economy countries like China and Vietnam because of their demonstrated ability to disrupt the U.S. textile market.. NCTO welcomes President Trumps view that U.S. has made a mistake by not prioritizing trade enforcement in recent years. NCTO intends to make this issue a point of emphasis in the coming months because curtailing customs fraud and enforcing trade laws incentivizes reshoring. Moreover, due to the extremely high volume of trade in our sector, the textile industry is especially susceptible to customs fraud.. For FY 2017, the U.S. International Trade Commission reports ...

Pretreated dirty cotton residue (PDCR) from the textile industry was used as an alternative carbon source for the submerged cultivation of Aspergillus oryzae and the production of xylanases. The filtered culture supernatant was fractionated by ultrafiltration followed by three chromatographic steps, which resulted in the isolation of a homogeneous low-molecular-weight xylanase (Xyl-O1) with a mass of 21.5 kDa as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrilamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) co-polymerized with 0.1% oat spelt xylan. Enzyme catalysis was the most efficient at 50 °C and pH 6.0. The Km values (mg·mL−1) for the soluble fraction of oat spelt and birchwood xylans were 10.05 and 3.34, respectively. Xyl-O1 was more stable in the presence of 5,5-dithio-bis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB), 1,4-dithiothreitol (DTT), l-cysteine or β-mercaptoethanol, which increased the rate of catalysis by 40%, 14%, 40% or 37%, respectively. The enzyme stability was improved at pH 7.0 in the presence of 20 mM l

The Town of Franklinsville, North Carolina was incorporated by the state legislature in 1847, but it had been developed as a residential community surrounding one of the states first cotton textile mills starting in 1838. Deep Rivers first cotton textile factory- and one of the first dozen opened in North Carolina- was built at Cedar Falls in 1836. The small wooden building housed a few hundred spindles which produced cotton "bundle yarn" for use by local hand weavers, of whom Randolph had a great many. Though successful, the Cedar Falls factory was not sophisticated. The second local factory, incorporated by the Legislature in 1838, was designed from the beginning to process cotton from raw bale to finished cloth woven on power looms. This corporation, the Randolph Manufacturing Company, brought the textile industry to what is now called Franklinville. In 1846 another factory, the Island Ford Manufacturing Company, was built a mile downriver. In 1848 the Union Manufacturing Company was built ...

INTRODUCTION. The use of buccal mucosal graft (BMG) is commonly employed in urologic reconstructive surgery. In poorly accessible surgical areas, graft fixation can be especially difficult. To improve the efficiency of quilting and suturing in challenging spaces, an improved surgical sewing machine was developed and implemented. The aim of our presentation is to demonstrate the feasibility and ease of this technique for a variety of surgeries incorporating BMG.. METHODS. A retrospective review was completed of surgeries where the improvised surgical sewing machine was used in areas traditionally difficult to access during reconstruction. All patients were confirmed to have strictures requiring reconstruction with BMG. Following incision through the stenosed segments, BMG was harvested. The graft was quilted with the improvised surgical sewing machine composed of materials routinely used and available in the operating room. The device was easily assembled by threading absorbable barbed suture ...
Much of todays clothing is not eco-friendly; rather most clothing is made out of synthetic fibers and petrochemical derivatives. Petrochemicals are pollutants that cause global warming and their chemical makeup isnt too far off from the nerve gases used in WWII. The manufacture of synthetic fibers is a very involved process, one that releases many noxious gases, acids and organic compounds. Clothing that has a special feature, such as crease resistant contain chemicals like formaldehyde ...

Background: Endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide) is a widespread contaminant in many environmental settings. Since the 1970s, there has been generally consistent evidence indicating reduced risks for lung cancer associated with occupational endotoxin exposure. Methods: We updated a case-cohort study nested within a cohort of 267 400 female textile workers in Shanghai, China. We compared exposure histories of 1456 incident lung cancers cases diagnosed during 1989-2006 with those of a reference subcohort of 3022 workers who were free of lung cancer at the end of follow-up. We applied Cox proportional hazards modelling to estimate exposure-response trends, adjusted for age and smoking, for cumulative exposures lagged by 0, 10, and 20 years, and separately for time windows of ⩽15 and |15 years since first exposure. Results: We observed no associations between cumulative exposure and lung cancer, irrespective of lag interval. In contrast, analyses by exposure time windows revealed modestly elevated, but

Its time that we go back and take a close look at the upland long staple cottons as a source of new genes to raise the current cotton production system to a new level of competitive capability in the global cotton textile industry, says cotton breeder Hal Lewis.
We used data from two large case-control studies conducted in Montreal to assess the relationship between occupational exposure to cotton dust and wool dust and risk of lung cancer. Subjects in Study 1 were in their active work years roughly from the 1940s to the 1970s, whereas the active period for Study 2 subjects was the 1950s to 1980s. Thus there was considerable overlap. It is likely that the average concentrations of exposure declined between the two studies because of improved industrial hygiene and use of personal protective equipment. Historically the Province of Quebec was the hub of the clothing and textile industries in Canada, and despite decreasing quotas and increasing offshore production, it so remains with approximately 50,000 workers employed in these fields [33]. Lifetime prevalence of exposure was higher in Study 2 than in Study 1 because females, who were disproportionately active in the textile and clothing industries, were not included in Study 1, and because there seemed ...
Press Release issued Mar 7, 2017: The anti-creasing agent market is one of the most important chemical markets for fabric finishing in the textile industry. Presently, it is a standard practice to use natural or synthetic resins to impart crease resistance in finished textiles; this enriches the look and performance as per end use requirement. In recent times, rapid growth in urbanization has led to modernization of the textile industry. Thus, it is forecasted that the anti-creasing market will witness sturdy growth in the forecast period.

The main factors that drive the market for cellulose acetate fibers is its use in cigarette products. The demand for cigarettes is increasing rapidly for the past few years. Cellulose acetate fibres are used in the production of cigarette buds and hence the demand for this material is expected to grow rapidly in the near future. The textile industry also makes use of this fiber in the manufacturing of garments and as the material is rich, smooth and satiny, it is a cheaper alternative to silk with similar qualities. the use of this material in textile industries is expected to drive the market continually especially its use in wedding gowns as the wedding industry is also a huge multimillion industry and generates huge revenues throughout the year. This material is considered biodegradable as it is made from wood pulp. Hence more industries would prefer to use this material as a raw material in order to manufacture their end product. The end users for this market include ophthalmologists, ...

The existing market for bleaching chemicals is highly dominated by geographies such as North America and Europe. The market dominance of North America is attributed to demand from various end-user applications. However, the strict environmental regulations led by European region will affect the demand for bleaching chemicals to certain extent. Asia Pacific region is expected to be the fastest growing market for bleaching chemicals considering the extensive growth in demand from paper and textile industries. Asia Pacific countries such as India, China, Thailand, Malaysia and Bangladesh are anticipated to be the upcoming markets for bleaching chemicals in the next six years considering their tremendous growth potential in end-user industries. Moreover, the continuous economic advancement of these countries, coupled with surge in the growth rate of textile industry in these countries is further resulting in an increase in the number of potential customers across these developing countries. ...
The collapse of the Rana Plaza factory building in April 2013 in Dhaka, Bangladesh and the fire at Ali Enterprises in Karachi, Pakistan in September 2012 are two particularly drastic examples of the inhumane working conditions endured in southern Asia by those producing goods for the European market. Payment below the living wage, excessive overtime hours on six to seven days per week, workplace abuse and discrimination, repression of trade unions and frequent workplace accidents and fire disasters: this is the sad reality faced by millions of workers in South and East Asia. European companies aggravate the already poor conditions by demanding low prices and tough deadlines. This pressure is passed along to the workers by the factory owners ...

For example, if you try to sew a pair of jeans with a machine of the domestic type, you probably wont succeed, whereas with an industrial sewing machine you wont have any problems with such a task. Furthermore there are lots of useful accessories (like presser foots and different types of needles) available, that make it possible to use the sewing machine for a range of different materials and sewing tasks. In October we continued to learn about the textile workers in Lawrence, Massachusetts, who went on strike in 1912. Each of us developed a budget for a family based on the actual wages and costs from that time. We rolled dice to see how many children we had to feed and how old they were, which helped us decide whether they would need child care, be in school, or go to work in the mills themselves. While we were studying Lawrence, we went to visit the Lowell National Historical Park. Lowell is on the Merrimack River, like Lawrence, and also had textile mills. There was also a strike in Lowell, but it was not quite as famous as the one in Lawrence. In Lowell we saw the power looms, figured out how they worked, and learned just how loud they were. We put together our own model canals, trying to build the most efficient systems of water wheels. We also compared the power and speed of different kinds of wheels. After lunch we rode the trolley to another mill and saw how different simple machines ...

Those beautiful farms up there that had for years produced the best cotton crops in the United States, had begun to wear out. And they were not getting anything for their product-it wasnt commercially feasible to raise cotton. The cotton mills up there were closed down or working one shift, and the people working in them werent making more than a dollar an hour, something like that. One of the big arguments made against the minimum wage law, where Hugo Black was involved, was that if they paid $1.35 an hour they would break every hosiery mill and every textile mill and every saw mill in the state of Alabama. none of them could operate under those terms. So as the New Deal went on, it just became obvious that it was good for the state ...
Abstract: A photocatalytic system for wastewater treatment from textile industries was constructed and tested for its efficiency. The system consisted of two units - a photoreactor for dye decomposition and a catalyst recovery unit. The photoreactor was an annular plug flow photoreactor under irradiation of 36 W Toshiba blacklight. The catalyst recovery unit was 42 L of sediment tank for TiO2 catalyst recovery. In our study, a Cibra Cron red R-W 150% (an anionic azo dye) was used to prepare a synthetic textile wastewater. The experimental parameters such as flow rate, pH, dye initial concentration, catalyst loading and setteled time that affected the system performance were investigated. The photodegradation kinetics were found to follow the Langmuire - Hinshelwood model and also depended on the TiO2 concentration and the pH. The optimum condition for photocatalytic decomposition was at pH 3 and at 1 g/L of TiO2 catalyst loading. The reaction rate constant, k and the adsorption constant, K for ...

Sedbergh is famous for its public school, set in magnificent parkland on the edge of the town. There is a fine Norman church, St Andrews Church, and overlooking the town is the site of Castlehaw, an ancient motte and bailey castle built to repel the Scottish hordes. George Fox, founder of the Quakers, preached both in the churchyard of St Andrews, and in the nearby Brigflatts Meeting House, which dates from 1675.. Just outside the town is Farfield Mill with four floors of inspiration await you in this former Victorian woollen mill. It was rescued and restored by local people and is now home to 16 outstanding artists and craftsmen. There is a heritage exhibition which explains the processes employed in a textile mill i.e. carding, scribbling, tentering, dyeing and finishing to name but a few. Examples of these processes are displayed from the raw fleece to the finished woollen cloth. There are several looms - still working - including a 300-year-old Witney Loom with its flying shuttle, and one ...
Gear metering pumps and meter mix dispense systems.. In 1948 Mahr created its line of metering pumps in support of Prof. Schlack who invented, in 1938, the Perlon fibre (Polyamide 6). The complete line of high-precision gear metering pumps has been manufactured under the brand name Feinpruef. Aptly named the spinning pump, the Feinpruef high-precision gear metering pump excelled in the synthetic textile industry. Known for its superior manufacturing and metallurgy, major manufacturers still choose the Feinpruef pump as their partner today. Mahr Metering Systems Corporation manufactured its first automated meter/mix/dispense system in 1992. Since this time, systems have been supplied to many diverse markets, such as adhesives, chemicals, paints, plastics, and silicones. Mahr has formed alliances with many raw material suppliers, acting jointly in research and development to create effective metering systems for new materials. During this research Mahr has found new ways to accurately meter ...
