African Americans were excluded from employment in the Southern textile industry for most of this century. Before 1965, they made up little more than two percent of its employees. At first glance this fact is unsurprising since economic life throughout the South was strictly segregated, with blacks occupying poorly paid laborer jobs whenever they worked in the same industries with whites. But from an economic point of view the exclusion of African Americans from textiles is surprising indeed. The textile industry was the largest manufacturing industry in the South and one of the most competitive. Most production jobs in the mills required little skill. ...

Where are the organized women workers? Alice Kessler-Harris asked in 1975.1 Her question unleashed an unabating torrent of provocative studies of proletarian women in a number of countries, particularly in the United States and Europe.2 This deluge of solid research notwithstanding, activist women, to paraphrase Anne Firor Scott, continue to be seen and not seen.3 Pre-World War II Japanese women textile workers suffer the. same,...if not indeed a more pervasive, invisibility. When they are not generally overlooked, they are pitied as passive victims incapable of acting on their own initiative. When instances of activism are so obvious they cannot be ignored (as when silk reelers carried out a major strike in 1885), they are dismissed as unique, aberrant events. Womens failure to become the backbone of an enduring union movement confirms the conventional view of them as passive. Their gender, it is argued-or, as one scholar suggests, their youth4-made them hard to organize. Further research on womens
Fast Fashion refers to clothing designs which move speedily from fashion events to stores to meet new trends. Fast fashion allows the public to consume these products at an affordable price, but in the United States or Australia, we find that a majority of these products are not manufactured in either of these countries. These products are commonly manufactured in China or Bangladesh, but in recent years, Indonesias textiles exports have grown exponentially.. In terms of rankings, Indonesia is among the top ten textile-producing nations in the world and is the 12th largest textile and apparel exporter, with a majority of their products being exported to the United States, the Middle East and the European Union (Mordor Intelligence).. In spite of all that, Indonesias textiles industry is under threat due to the escalating trade wars between the United States and China (Textile Focus). The US is currently the largest market for Indonesian textiles and apparel (36 per cent) whereas the Middle ...

This fall, the EU Commission will present its strategy for a sustainable textile sector. This is because the textile industry is one of the most environmentally damaging of all. One aspect of the EU strategy concerns the circular economy.. Dr. Rüdiger Fox, CEO of Sympatex Technologies, is a rigorous advocate of the circular economy. He has already won several awards for his sustainability-centered management.. Action is urgently required, as the numbers from the EU Commission show. Since 1996 the per-capita consumption of clothing has increased 40 percent while its useful life has markedly decreased. Across the EU nearly 26 kilograms of textiles are bought per inhabitant and 11 kilograms are disposed of, with the majority being incinerated or ending up in landfills.. Its not just Fox who wants to change this - the industry is looking for solutions. There are already many initiatives and networks in existence - such as the expert group Circular Economy that has formed within the ...

NCTO further agrees with President Trump that all U.S. free trade agreements should be periodically reviewed on a performance basis.. As for any new trade deals, NCTO supports President Trumps preference for individual bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs) over multilaterals. Moreover, any new FTA targets should be limited to countries that trade in a fair, reciprocal manner. NCTO would oppose any FTAs with non-market economy countries like China and Vietnam because of their demonstrated ability to disrupt the U.S. textile market.. NCTO welcomes President Trumps view that U.S. has made a mistake by not prioritizing trade enforcement in recent years. NCTO intends to make this issue a point of emphasis in the coming months because curtailing customs fraud and enforcing trade laws incentivizes reshoring. Moreover, due to the extremely high volume of trade in our sector, the textile industry is especially susceptible to customs fraud.. For FY 2017, the U.S. International Trade Commission reports ...

Pretreated dirty cotton residue (PDCR) from the textile industry was used as an alternative carbon source for the submerged cultivation of Aspergillus oryzae and the production of xylanases. The filtered culture supernatant was fractionated by ultrafiltration followed by three chromatographic steps, which resulted in the isolation of a homogeneous low-molecular-weight xylanase (Xyl-O1) with a mass of 21.5 kDa as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrilamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) co-polymerized with 0.1% oat spelt xylan. Enzyme catalysis was the most efficient at 50 °C and pH 6.0. The Km values (mg·mL−1) for the soluble fraction of oat spelt and birchwood xylans were 10.05 and 3.34, respectively. Xyl-O1 was more stable in the presence of 5,5-dithio-bis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB), 1,4-dithiothreitol (DTT), l-cysteine or β-mercaptoethanol, which increased the rate of catalysis by 40%, 14%, 40% or 37%, respectively. The enzyme stability was improved at pH 7.0 in the presence of 20 mM l

Argentina is taking a new tack in its efforts to boost its textile industry.. The Philippines has traditionally been a big supplier of textiles to the world, but the countrys economy has been suffering from years of overcapacity and its textile exports have fallen in recent years.. And while the country has seen a rise in demand for textiles, the government has been looking for ways to boost production and boost its economy.. Thus, it is necessary to investigate the removal of dyes from wastewater using a simple method such as sorption. Since different salts are used during the dyeing of textile, anions and cations are present in wastewaters and they can affect the process of dye removal. In this paper, the influence of several anions on the removal of textile dyes was investigated. Chitosan and methacrylic acid-based hydrogels obtained by free-radical polymerization and cross-linked with N,N-methylenebisacrylamide were used as sorbents. Removal of two textile dyes was investigated (anionic dye C.I. Acid ...
