TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH. The Texas Department of Health traces its beginnings to the need for quarantine in the nineteenth century. The many epidemics that visited Texas early in that century made quarantine necessary, particularly at principal ports of entry. Although before 1879 responsibility for quarantine in Texas lay with the governor, practical application of quarantine began with local authorities. In 1879 an act amending and supplementing the Quarantine Act of 1870 authorized the governor to appoint a medical health officer for the State. This person was to be a physician familiar with yellow fever, old enough to have mature judgment but not too old to be capable of active duty, and pledged to the importance of both quarantine and sanitation. He was to operate exclusively under the direction of the governor and to be paid ten dollars for each day of service, plus travel expenses. Later that year, $12,000 was appropriated to build quarantine stations along the coast and at the ...

The building is expected to use 80% less energy per square foot than the adjacent UT School of Public Health building, built in 1977, and 41% less energy than a conventional, minimally code-compliant building. This reduction in energy use is expected to save $38,000 annually.. The building envelope, lighting, and mechanical systems were all designed to minimize cooling loads. Strategies include high-performance glazing and shading devices; high-efficiency, right-sized mechanical systems; daylit work spaces with dimming devices to reduce lighting loads; and operable windows.. The site available was not ideal from a solar standpoint and required the buildings long facades to face due east and west. This presented unique challenges and opportunities to the design team. To address this undesirable orientation, the design team implemented numerous passive strategies to minimize direct solar heat gain and maximize the use of natural light. The result is a facility that tells the story of the suns ...

Researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center have found that the use of metformin among older men has a positive effect on a range of age-related cancers, heart disease, depression, dementia and mortality rates.. The scientists analysed data from 41,204 men aged over 65 with type 2 diabetes and found, among the 8,393 who were using metformin to manage their diabetes, an association with a reduction in age-related diseases. The effect was particularly high in men classified as being at high-risk of certain diseases.. The effect of metformin on reducing a specific occurrence was the greatest in the class with the highest risk for that condition (eg, the greatest reduction in CVD was found in the high CVD risk class), and these benefits appeared to further reduce mortality,. said Chen-Pin Wang, PhD, of the department of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.. While the research is exiting Chen-Pin Wang said that using ...
Mexican American women in the United States are more likely to live a sedentary lifestyle than women of other ethnic groups. As a result, obesity affects Mexican American women at a high rate. Obesity and a lack of physical activity are risk factors for many diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancers. Increasing physical activity can lead to weight loss and lower the risk of developing these diseases. This study represents a partnership between the University of South Carolina, the South Carolina Hispanic Latino Health Coalition, and the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) Regional Academic Health Center in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Study researchers from these institutions will first conduct interviews and focus groups and then develop a program aimed at encouraging moderately intense physical activity among Mexican American women. The Texas Music Office was established in 1990 with the legislative mandate and mission statement to promote the development of the music industry in the state by informing members of that industry and the public about the resources available in the state for music production.. The idea for a Texas Music Office originated in 1985 during the Sixty-ninth Texas Legislature with the creation of the Texas Music Commission, an advisory board consisting of nine members appointed by Gov. Mark White. The board recognized the growing popularity of Texas music throughout the world and the perceived need to promote Texas music as part of the states overall economic development. Ultimately, the Texas Music Commission recommended the creation of a sister office to the Texas Film Commission-both under the newly-created Texas Department of Commerce. Casey Monahan, an Austin American-Statesman music journalist and marketing analyst, was hired as the Texas Music Office director, and the office opened on ...

San Diego, CA - The perception that diet sodas are a benign alternative to highly sweetened beverages might be dangerously wrong, according to the results of the San Antonio Longitudinal Study of Aging, which were reported here at the American Diabetes Association (ADA) 2011 Scientific Sessions [1].. Diet soft drinks have long been thought to be a healthier alternative to their sugary counterparts; however, past reports have linked increased incidence of weight gain, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes to the frequent intake of diet soda.. In the study presented, Sharon P Fowler (University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio) and colleagues examined the effect of the long-term consumption of diet sodas by a population of individuals 65 to 74 years of age (n=474).. At baseline, measures of height, weight, and waist circumference were recorded, as was diet-soft-drink intake. Three additional exams of the study subjects were conducted over an average follow-up of just over 3.5 years (the ...

Purpose: A prospective radiographic study analyzed condylar position in patients who had undergone orthodontic treatment and isolated maxillary advancement after Le Fort I osteotomy. Patients and Methods: Eleven patients were selected and radiographic images were taken in the immediate preoperative, immediate postoperative (1-2 weeks), and late postoperative periods (minimum of 6 months). Tracings were done on acetate paper for the submento-vertex radiograph, to measure the axial angulation of the condyles, and for the tomographic images of both sides, in the maximal intercuspation, rest position, and maximal opening, for the 3 periods. Linear measurements were taken for the tomograms over the posterior, superior, and anterior articular spaces. These images with the tracings were digitized and measured by means of computer software (UTHSCSA Image Tool 3.0; University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, San Antonio, TX), after it had been adequately calibrated. Results: The analysis of ...
