Serena Jameka Williams (born September 26, 1981) is an American professional tennis player. The Womens Tennis Association (WTA) has ranked her world No. 1 in singles on eight separate occasions over the last 15 years from 2002 to 2017. She became the world No. 1 for the first time on July 8, 2002. On her sixth occasion, she held the ranking for 186 consecutive weeks, tying the record set by Steffi Graf for the most consecutive weeks as world No. 1 by a female tennis player. In total, she has been world No. 1 for 319 weeks, which ranks third in the Open Era among female players behind Graf and Martina Navratilova. Some commentators, players and sports writers regard her as the greatest female tennis player of all time. On April 19, 2017, she announced a hiatus from tennis until 2018 because of pregnancy. Williams holds the most Grand Slam titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles combined amongst active players. Her record of 39 Grand Slam titles puts her 3rd on the all-time list and second ...

It seems the key to protecting your spine from your serve is to make sure core strengthening is part of your overall workout routine. Dr. Lanman reminds, your back muscles are part of your core, so work them twice as hard as your work your abs. And if you do end up needing spine surgery (Heaven forbid) and want to get back out on the court, artificial disc replacement is a good option.. Sources:. Alyas F, Turner M, Connell D. The objective of this study was to estimate the incidence and prevalence of injury and illness among elite junior tennis players. A cohort of 73 players (11-14 years) in the 2012-2013 Dutch national high-performance program was followed for 32 weeks; all participants completed the study. The OSTRC Questionnaire on Health Problems was used to record self-reported injuries and illnesses and to record training and match exposure. Main outcome measures were average prevalence of overuse injury and illness and incidence density of acute injury. On average, players practiced 9.1h/week (SD 0.6; range 2.3-12.0) and had 2.2h of match play (SD 0.6; range 2.3-12.0). During the course of the study, 67 players reported a total of 187 health problems. The average weekly prevalence of all health problems was 21.3% (95% CI: 19.2-22.9), of which 12.1% (95% CI: 10.9-13.3) constituted overuse injuries and 5.8% (95% CI: 4.6-6.9) illnesses. The incidence of acute injuries was 1.2/1000h of tennis play (95% CI: ...
When a tennis player steps forward to hit a backhand groundstroke in closed stance, modifying the direction of the front foot relative to the net may reduce the risk of ankle injury and increase performance. This study evaluated the relationship between pelvic rotation and lower extremity movement during the backhand groundstroke when players stepped with toes parallel to the net (Level) or with toes pointed towards the net (Net). High school competitive tennis players (eleven males and seven females, 16.8 ± 0.8 years, all right- handed) performed tennis court tests comprising five maximum speed directional runs to the court intersection line to hit an imaginary ball with forehand or backhand swings. The final backhand groundstroke for each player at the backcourt baseline was analyzed. Pelvic rotation and lower extremity motion were quantified using 3D video analysis from frontal and sagittal plane camera views reconstructed to 3D using DLT methods. Plantar flexion of ankle and supination of ...

The principal findings of our study are first, that there is a great variation in the reported incidence rate of tennis injuries; second, that most injuries occur in the lower extremities, followed by the upper extremities and then the trunk; third, that there are very few cohort studies available that estimate a measure of association between risk factors and occurrence of tennis injuries; and fourth, that there are no randomised controlled trials on preventative measures in tennis.. The variation in the reported incidence rates of tennis injuries most probably reflects variation in injury definition, study design, populations under study, methods of data collection, and the duration of follow up or recall period. The lowest incidence rate (0.04 injuries per 1000 players per year) was reported in the LIS study.108 Injuries in this study included only those for which the player was treated at a hospital casualty department. This implies that predominantly more acute and serious injuries will be ...

Lower extremity injuries are common among all levels and ages of tennis players. In fact, some reports suggest as much as 67% of all tennis injuries are lower extremity related (1). More specifically, adductor (groin) strains are listed as one of the most frequent injuries in elite junior tennis players (2,3). Adductor strains occur during movements involving quick acceleration or rapid change of direction when paired with extreme hip abduction, such as split type movements in which the leg moves away from the body, or also large hip external rotation. Combined injury of the hamstrings and hip adductor muscles - respectively, the semimembranosus, and adductor mangus and longus - has been observed during a split type movement in sports such as tennis (4). These movements happen most frequently on surfaces with less friction such as clay. Increased prevalence of adductor strains is often anecdotally associate with increased sliding side-to-side during play. ...

ATP World Tour Exec Chair & President Brad Drewett shockingly announced that he would soon resign because he has been diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease (also known as ALS or Lou Gehrigs Disease). Drewett, who has been in his role for more than a year, but with the ATP for 35 years in some form as a player or administrator, made the sad announcement during the start of the Australian Open. Drewett has worked tirelessly during the last year seeking dramatic changes in prize money from the Grand Slams, which he won from the Australian Open. During that time he spoke with an unusually soft voice, which he said was due to problems with his vocal cords. It is unclear if the voice issue is related to ALS. Drewett said, It has been a privilege to serve as Executive Chairman and President of the ATP, an organization that Ive been a part of for more than 35 years since I became a professional tennis player. I hold the ATP very close to my heart, and its with sadness that I make the decision to enter ...

Rob thinks he and Dave have a big advantage because theyve cooked in the kitchen before. Rob is utterly deluded. Their actual advantage comes from the phrase Shake n Bake, which they plan to repeat so many times during the cook-off that Jane and Emma will hurl themselves out a window.. Time management has always been our downfall, says Jane, possibly because more than 80 per cent of her cooking time each episode is spent making idiotic comments about Emma being in love with Steve.. On the beardy side of the wall, Rob and Dave reflect philosophically on how quickly time passes. They both agree that it passes pretty quickly. Life is a puzzle, Rob and Dave agree. Up on the balcony Drasko and Bianca opine on the competing teams, while Rose pretends to be interested in what theyre saying. Rob and Dave become overexcited by the smell of their tomato sauce. Adam thinks Jane and Emma need to focus on their entrée - as a professional tennis player he learnt this lesson years ago.. Manu says Jane ...

Purpose: To investigate the effects of combined sleep hygiene recommendations and mindfulness on actigraphy-based sleep parameters, perceptual well-being, anxiety, and match outcomes during high-performance junior tennis tournaments. Methods: In a randomized crossover design, 17 high-performance junior tennis players completed the baseline, control, and intervention (INT) conditions across 3 separate weeks. The baseline consisted of unassisted, habitual sleep during a regular training week, and the control was unassisted sleep during a tournament week. The players attended a sleep education workshop and completed a nightly sleep hygiene protocol during a tournament week for the INT. Analysis was performed on the weekly means and on the night prior to the first match of the tournament (T-1). Results: Significant differences were observed for increased time in bed, total sleep time, and an earlier bedtime (P , .05) across the INT week. These parameters also significantly improved on T-1 of the ...

Introduction: Research has shown that both heat stress and endurance exercise can result in an increase in oxidative stress; however, there is limited information regarding the impact of the combination on oxidative balance, in particular an exercise bout characterised by high-intensity long-duration intermittent activity such as tennis. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of changes in oxidative stress and antioxidant status in response to two simulated tennis matches undertaken in cool (≈22° and 70%RH) and hot (≈36° and 35%RH) environments. Methods: Twelve high level (ITF rank 2-3) male tennis players volunteered to participate in the matches (separated by 72 hours), which consisted of 20 minutes of effective play separated into two 10 min segments. Core body temperature, body mass and indirect markers of oxidative stress and antioxidant status were assessed immediately prior to, at the mid-point and after the completion of the matches. Results: Preliminary data analysis
Laver came out on top in various experts polls for the best of all time. In 1986, the US magazine Inside Tennis polled 37 experts, which resulted in a computerised tournament. Laver ranked first on this list ahead of John McEnroe, Don Budge, Kramer, Björn Borg, Gonzales, Tilden, Jimmy Connors, Fred Perry, and Lew Hoad. In a poll by the Associated Press in 2000, Laver was voted The Male Tennis Player of the Century, ahead of Pete Sampras, Tilden, Borg, Budge, McEnroe and Hoad (tied), Rosewall and Roy Emerson (tied), and Kramer. In an article in Tennis Week in 2007, the tennis historian Raymond Lee statistically analysed the all-time best players. Laver topped his list ahead of Tilden and Borg (tied), Roger Federer, Gonzales, Rosewall, Budge, Ivan Lendl, Connors, Sampras, McEnroe, and Kramer. In 2009 it was written that Rod Laver is considered by most folks who saw him play and many whove heard of his accomplishments, to be as great a tennis player that ever lived-current players ...
It cant be that good, player shouts at amorous couple.. By Doug Fernandes , Sarasota Herald-Tribune MANATEE COUNTY - Theres love at every tennis match, but not the kind spectators were expecting Tuesday night during the Sarasota Open.. The amorous doubles team, grunting and groaning enough to make even Monica Seles blush, couldnt be told to get a room.. They already had one, inside a condo located about 200 feet from the court at James T. Driscoll Stadium on which Americans Frances Tiafoe and Mitchell Krueger were attempting to play a first-round match without being subjected to a case of, you know, tennis interruptus.. An audible one.. Yeah, because its quiet while youre playing, obviously. You could hear a pin drop and it was, yeah, interesting, said Open director Tony Driscoll.. Taifoe and Krueger played along when sounds of the playing along from an open window became a distraction.. Everyone did, including announcer Mike Cation on the Challenger Tour livestream broadcast, who ...
A critical look at two typical research designs is presented, the first study being an investigation of field dependence and reaction time in senior tennis players, and the second being an investigation of the concepts of locus of control and achievement motivation in highly successful male competitive tennis players age 65 and older. A critique of the first study indicates some neglect for determining the reasons for differences in performance. A cognitive functional approach is then presented which is intended to alleviate some of the problems of previous research. This approach emphasizes a careful evaluation of the individuals cognitions prior to, during, and following particular learning and performance situations, and attempts to determine which cognitions are contributing to or interfering with effective learning and maximum performance. References are included. (DS)
Downloadable! We exploit a unique setting in which two professionals compete in a real-life tennis contest with high monetary rewards in order to assess how men and women respond to competitive pressure. Comparing their performance in low-stakes versus high-stakes situations, we find that men consistently choke under competitive pressure, but with regard to women the results are mixed. Furthermore, even if women show a drop in performance in the more crucial stages of the match, it is in any event about 50% smaller than that of men. These findings are robust to different specifications and estimation strategies.

The racket frames mechanics during impact are similar to those of the strings. Though a racket frame appears to be quite rigid when compared to the ball and strings, it does indeed bend upon impact. Both the strings and frame return to their original shape after deformation; however, unlike the strings, the frame is significantly less elastic. According to a 1995 article by Steven Ashley, the associate editor of Mechanical Engineering, it takes about 15 to 30 milliseconds for a frame to return to its original shape. This time period may sound short, but it is too long to return the energy back to the ball, since the ball is present in the string plane for a mere three to six milliseconds - the ball leaves the racket before the racket frame has time to return in its original shape. Therefore, some energy stored in the racket frames deformation is lost, never returning to the ball. Consequently, engineers turned their attention towards the creation of stiffer rackets that resist deformation [4 ...

A racket frame for ball games, such as a tennis racket frame, is made out of a length of material shaped into a loop to form a generally round head and two parallel longitudinal branches forming a portion of a racket handle. The length of material comprises a hollow beam having a cavity of generally rectangular cross-section. The cavity is bounded by flanges and webs of the beam which are shaped so as receive and cooperate with additional elements. The frame has a central bow having a longitudinal internal channel in communication with the internal cavity of the length of material and molded material extends through the cavity of the beam and into the channel of the central bow. The racket frame possesses good mechanical qualities and results in satisfactory playing performance.

Keefe Gorman has nearly three decades of experience as an advisor with prominent financial institutions such as Merrill Lynch. Beyond his financial activities with Merrill Lynch, Keefe Gorman enjoys staying physically active by playing tennis.. Though not exclusive to tennis players, tennis elbow ranks as one of the most common injuries tennis players suffer. Tennis elbow is the colloquial term used to describe lateral epicondylitis, a condition characterized by pain in muscles and tendons around the elbow. The condition is brought about not only by overuse of the forearm but by repetitive motions made by the hand and arm, making tennis players particularly vulnerable.. Tennis elbow can begin either as a symptom of a sudden injury or as a long-developing standalone condition. The lateral epicondyle, the area of the arm where muscles and tendons meet the bony exterior of the elbow, is typically the source of discomfort, with symptoms generally originating in the dominant arm.. All types of ...

This routine features 2 unique complexes: one thats strength-oriented and another thats cardio-focused. All you need a tennis ball or racquet ball for this workout. These drills will improve your hand-eye coordination and reflexes, 2 critical and often overlooked aspects of fitness as we age. Plus theyre a fun change-up that will make the time pass fast while you sweat your ass off. They may look silly but they will give you a nasty little metabolic spanking if you take it seriously. The iso-dynamic stability drills in Complex 1 will crush your legs, abs, and shoulders. And my heart rate is always 160 bpm+ during the agility drills in Complex 2 so its really as hard as you make it. COMPLEX 1: STABILITY EMPHASIS Perform each move for 60 seconds with no rest between moves: 1. Tennis Ball Split Squat Multi-Level ISO Dribbles- Left/Weak Side 2. The US open of Tennis is about to start. As world number 1, Novak Djokovic, takes the court one of the great stories in sports will be told again and again. If you are unfamiliar with his story, here it is. Up to 2011 Djokovic was an excellent player, yet he was not considered to be one of the elite tennis stars. Why was this? After all, he won the Australian Open in 2008. Although he was obviously very skilled in every aspect of the game, he had a habit of collapsing in the heat and during long extended matches. Djokovic would blame it on asthma and seasonal allergies. He appeared out of shape to most of his opponents and even television announcers. This accusation was despite Djokovics regimented training schedule, which consumed most of his waking hours. Then in 2011 he won 3 Grand Slam tournaments, 10 Titles, and 43 consecutive matches on his way to becoming the worlds number 1 tennis player. He was so dominant that year there are few achievements in the history of sports that can even ...
Clinicians attending to patients suffering from tennis elbow ask them to alter the grip size of their racket to ease muscle fatigue
Made with premium grade NANOMETRIC DR carbon graphite, the new EZONE DR 98 generates increased flex and repulsion, creating a larger sweetspot and greater power throughout the racket. The rackets ISOMETRIC head shape increases the number of main and cross strings that meet in the centre of the frame, giving a 7% more effective hitting area. Shockless Grommets at the bottom of the frame reduce impact vibration, while Quake Shut Gel, embedded inside the grip, removes any subtle discomforts. The combination of these two technologies reduces overall vibration by up to 50%. An O.P.S. (Oval Pressed Shaft) manufacturing technology builds the ideal amount of shaft flex at racket impact, extending dwell time for enhanced ball spin and directional control. The Super Cushion Grip minimises vibration, helping to protect the wrist, forearm, and elbow from shock-induced injuries. Tennis elbow is considered a repetitive strain injury. Think of a tennis player repeatedly hitting the ball with a backhand stroke. The repetitive loading and pull of these muscles over time creates micro-tears in the muscle and tendon, which ultimately leads to inflammation. Poor conditioning and poor mechanics can greatly increase your chances of developing the condition. But tennis elbow is not limited to only tennis players. Basically anyone who uses their hands in a repetitive way such as musicians, chefs, painters, writers, carpenters and even massage therapists are all at risk. Writers for example may develop whats known as writers cramp. The constant contraction of the forearm extensors in addition to the cocking of the wrist, will over time lead to muscle exhaustion and eventually irritation of the tendon.. Recent studies have also shown that a single event, such as a direct blow to the elbow or a sudden overloading of the muscles, can precipitate a sudden onset of tennis elbow. The ...
Our hypothetical tennis match between Thiem and Zverev highlights how you can use probability to find value. But how you arrive at these assumptions is up to you. The probability of the tennis match was based solely on head-to-heads, but you may want to consider other criteria. Youll also need to consider current form, player motivations, and be an excellent judge of when players are improving or regressing. How much you factor these criteria into your probability calculations is what will make the difference between you being a successful or unsuccessful gambler.. Of course, probability applies to all sports, including football, golf, cricket, basketball, ice hockey, American football, and many more.. Horse racing probabilities can be even more complex. Ground, track, distance, jockeys, trainers, and draw are all factors that can change the probability of a horse winning a race. While the idea of using probability to find the value in betting markets is a simple approach, it can take a lot of ...
Chapter One: Echizen Rika. In America, there is one school which was constantly talked about in newspapers, the Internet, tennis magazines and on the radio as well as the television. That school was St Andrews, located in California. And all because of one reason: two of the team captains for their tennis club were tennis prodigies who had been winning tennis championships...for the high schoolers section.. One of their team captains was Echizen Rika, the daughter of the legendary Samurai Nanjirou and winner of four consecutive championships in high school tennis tournaments. The other captain was the best friend and childhood friend of Rika, Kevin Smith, who like her, had also been winning championships in tennis matches way above his age level. And the vice-captain for the tennis team was a girl by the name of Yakiwa Yuki - a childhood friend of both Rika and Kevin.. And it is because of those three that their school was able to participate in tennis championships for the high school section ...
Tennis is one of the more popular sports on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Year round competition at all levels can unfortunately lead to various overuse injuries, and some athletes may even sustain acute traumatic injuries which may force them to miss time. An overview of common injuries as well as ways of preventing and treating them may help to keep a tennis player on the court.. Tennis Elbow. Perhaps the most dreaded of all the overuse conditions is Tennis Elbow, or lateral epicondylitis. A degenerative process affecting the tendons on the lateral aspect of the elbow, which help to bend the wrist backwards, it is commonly seen in tennis players given that these muscles help resist impact when the racquet strikes the ball. Combined with their importance in gripping the handle, these muscles/tendons are prone to overuse if not properly prepared. Strengthening, a regular warm-up routine, and paying attention to grip size can help minimize the risk of developing the condition. Treatment often ...

About a decade ago, I would have agreed with this 100%, and I still am fascinated and, quite frankly, awed by Racket and LOP (and looking forward to Racket Fest 2019 here in Berlin[1]).. But.. (You knew there was a but).. While I dont quite agree with the assertion that with the right tooling (so: this tooling), creating a language is as easy as creating a library, I dont think it would solve our problems even if it were true.. Language design is much harder than library design, even if the tooling is perfect and transparent. In the extreme were going to end up with what Alan Kay calls inverse vandalism[2] aka the Mount Everest Effect: making things because we can, not because we should or theyre good.. In essence, designing a (domain specific) language should be your last resort, not your first resort. At least one that requires a parser or macro system to implement. After all, when we create a library, we are in fact creating a domain specific language, or at least a domain specific ...

Unique among tennis players, Tilden became a great player only at the relatively advanced age of 27. Prior to 1920 he had won a number of national doubles titles but had lost to Lindley Murray and Little Bill Johnston in the 1918 and 1919 singles championships. In the winter of 1919-20 he moved to Rhode Island where, on an indoor court, he devoted himself to remodeling his relatively ineffective backhand. It was all he needed. He emerged with a new grip and a powerful new backhand in the summer of 1920 and for the rest of the decade dominated world tennis. Except, perhaps, for Vinnie Richards, Johnston remained the second best American player for the next 6 or 7 years but was never again able to beat Tilden in an important match. Tall, lean, and gangly, with long arms, enormous hands, and exceptionally broad shoulders, Tilden possessed what was called at the time a cannonball service. Although he could serve aces almost at will, he had little interest in advancing to the net behind his ...
For the 11th consecutive year, Baldwin Citys Bill and Michelle Leeker hosted a successful slow-pitch softball tournament and raised money for medical research.. The Leekers hosted Trevors Tournament on June 25at the ball field complex on the west edge of town. The tournament is named in honor of Trevor Leeker, who was the son of Bill and Michelle Leeker who passed away Feb. 17, 2001, from a rare genetic illness called Krabbes Disease.. It went really well, Michelle Leeker said. I was really worried, because the rain made us start an hour behind. I think we left the park about 2 a.m. It was a very, very long day, but it went really well. We always center it around Baldwin, because Baldwin was there for us when we needed it.. The proceeds from the tournament benefit the Trevor Leeker Scholarship Foundation. The scholarship funds go to aid an individual entering a field focused on special needs children. They usual have between 60-150 applications for the scholarships. All of those students ...

The most common condition we see in our clinic is lateral elbow pain or pain on the outside aspect of the elbow. It is common amongst sports people and manual workers. This condition has been known as tennis elbow - however, this is not a diagnostic term. It is no more specific than back pain as a diagnosis. In fact this condition is more common in non tennis players then tennis players! Generally the symptoms arise from a degenerative process relating to a strength deficit in one of the extensor tendons of the forearm just below where it originates from the elbow. This is most commonly a result of an overuse syndrome related to excessive use of the wrist. Frequently there is also a significant contribution from the neck and upper spine. The pain can range from relatively trivial to almost incapacitating.. ...
PATIENT PRESENTATION A 19-year-old male semi-professional tennis player presents with a chief complaint of a grinding sensation when he moves his right shoulder, especially with overhead and reaching motions. Other symptoms include pain in the lateral and anterior shoulder and crepitus about the scapula. The patients primary concern is that his tennis serve is limited due to the grinding and posterior shoulder pain.. Examination reveals significant scapular protraction and increased thoracic kyphosis (combination of structural and postural), positive impingement test on the right, muscle weakness of the serratus anterior, middle and lower trapezius as well as gross weakness of the rotator cuff musculature. Examination of flexibility reveals shortening of anterior chest musculature, especially pectoralis minor on the right. Joint mobility of the thoracic spine is moderately hypomobile, and the glenohumeral (GH) joint is mildly limited in inferior glide and moderately limited in posterior glide. ...

It is reported that Low back pain associated with tennis can have various causes: The hard surface of the court and uneven nature of the sport, which places most of the burden on one side of the body, can cause aches and pain in the neck, shoulders, and back. Bad posture is a common culprit of back pain for tennis players.. However, table tennis can strengthen the muscles in your back and also work your full body. It is important to have a good warm up before playing table tennis so you can stretch out and prevent injury. You should always be wearing appropriate footwear, as this will help with stability and movement when playing the game.. A survey found that some people play table tennis to help relieve pain from arthritis in their neck, lower back or knees. The survey also found that 34% of table tennis players were aged 50 years and over, and back pain was the most commonly reported health problem. It is therefore important to stretch out well before playing the game to prevent any ...
