The effect of the type of diet consumed on the reproduction of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) was studied. Females of P. nigrispinus fed on an artificial diet had a longer preoviposition period than those fed on 3rd or 5th instar cotton leafworm larvae [Alabama argillacea (Hübner)] or mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L.) larvae. P. nigrispinus females fed on 3rd or 5th instar cotton leafworm larvae or mealworm larvae had a longer oviposition period than females on an artificial diet. The numbers of egg masses per female and of egg masses per female per day were higher when P. nigrispinus was fed on 3rd or 5th instar cotton leafworm larvae than when fed on an artificial diet. Geological substrates and air pollution affect the availability of calcium to mammals in many habitats, including the Adirondack Mountain Region (Adirondacks) of the United States. Mammalian insectivores, such as shrews, may be particularly restricted in environments with low calcium. We examined the consequences of calcium restriction on the least shrew (Cryptotis parva) in the laboratory. We maintained one group of shrews (5 F, 5 M) on a mealworm diet with a calcium concentration comparable to beetle larvae collected in the Adirondacks (1.1 ± 0.3 mg/g) and another group (5 F, 3 M) on a mealworm diet with a calcium concentration almost 20 times higher (19.5 ± 5.1 mg/g). Animals were given no access to mineral sources of calcium, such as snail shell or bone. We measured running speed and performance in a complex maze over 10 weeks. We went out last night for a four hour Safari ride and then again early this AM, hoping to see various animals some of whom are nocturnal. Last night we did see five female lions out hunting, but my camera battery had died already and Madeleines wasnt working well in the dark…so well just hope you believe our tale and the photo we took of the lioness tracks this morning. We returned to a nice dinner last night and went to bed very tired. We did have one small creature visit us in our room-a frog who was on the inside of my mosquito netting! I was able to get him out of my bed area and under a basket for the night (Madeleine reminded me that there are poisonous frogs so I shouldnt pick him up) and get to sleep.
