Despite the increasing interest in insect-based bioactive products, the biological activities of these products are rarely studied adequately. Larvae of Tenebrio molitor, the yellow mealworm, have been eaten as a traditional food and provide many health benefits. Therefore, we hypothesized that T. molitor larvae might influence adipogenesis and obesity-related disorders. In the present study, we investigated the anti-adipogenic and antiobesity effects of T. molitor larvae in vitro and in vivo. The lipid accumulation and triglyceride content in mature adipocytes was reduced significantly (up to 90%) upon exposure to an ethanol extract of T. molitor larvae, without a reduction in cell viability. Exposure also resulted in key adipogenic and lipogenic transcription factors. Additionally, in adipogenic differentiation medium the extract induced phosphorylation of adenosine monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase and mitogen-activated protein kinases. Unfortunately, in my current living situation, I am unable to keep dubias. I was planning on breeding them, but I had to find another option. I was told BSFL alone was much better than crickets, as they are less likely to pass on parasites and are more nutritious (doesnt have to be gutloaded/high calcium content), as well as they would grow better and healthier eating these insects. Crickets caused too many problems, as they are extremely hard to get where I am (takes weeks to ship for some reason and the order is always wrong, I once got only 50 crickets when I ordered 200, and they were all the wrong size). Anyway, its not like staying indoors watching birds out my window is without hazard. My desk is next to my feeder window, and when Im hard at work writing, I tend to play music and sing along, especially when Im totally engrossed in something. This fall, I was working on a couple of projects at my desk on the second floor of our house, singing away, when suddenly two chickadee flocks arrived at once, so I cranked open the window while I was in the middle of singing "Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid. The chickadees never seem to mind my singing-theyve been known to sing a song or two themselves. Anyway, while I was leaning out the window singing at high volume, with one especially picky chickadee sitting in my hand sorting through all the mealworms, one by one, to find the biggest one, and four very impatient chickadees buzzing around my head yelling every chickadee swear word in the book at the one in my hand (notes which sound oh so sweet and happy to the unpracticed ear), I just ...
