Predatory bacteria are ubiquitous in aquatic environments and may be important players in the ecology and biogeochemistry of microbial communities. Three novel strains belonging to two genera of marine flavobacteria, Olleya and Tenacibaculum, were cultured from coastal sediments and found to be predatory on other bacteria on surfaces. Two published species of the genus Tenacibaculum were also observed to grow by lysis of prey bacteria, raising the possibility that predation may be a widespread lifestyle amongst marine flavobacteria, which are diverse and abundant in a variety of marine environments. The marine flavobacterial clade is known to include species capable of photoheterotrophy, scavenging of polymeric organic substances, pathogenesis on animals, the degradation and lysis of phytoplankton blooms and, now, predation on bacterial communities. Retinal photodamage has previously been studied in teleost fish but very few have been performed on aquaculture species. To study retinal damage, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were previously acclimated to a control 12L:12D photoperiod with standard experimental low light intensity (0.1 W/m(2), equivalent to 3.2 x 10(13) photons/s/cm(2)) for at least 4 weeks and then kept under constant darkness (DD) for 3 days. The aim of the study was to validate a dummy regression approach for predictive modelling the fillet fatty acid (FA) composition of cultured European sea bass with dietary FA composition and lipid fillet content as independent variables. The model used our own data on gilthead sea bream as reference subgroup dataset and data from turbot, sole and European sea bass as dummy variables. Most of the observed variance within and among species was explained by the regression model without statistical significant interactions on blocks between diet composition and fish species subgroups. Tenacibaculum maritimum is a devastating bacterial pathogen of wild and farmed marine fish with a broad host range and a worldwide distribution. We report here the complete genome sequence of the T. maritimum type strain NCIMB 2154T. The genome consists of a 3,435,971-base pair circular chromosome with 2,866 predicted protein-coding genes. Genes encoding the biosynthesis of exopolysaccharides, the type IX secretion system, iron uptake systems, adhesins, hemolysins, proteases, and glycoside hydrolases were identified. They are likely involved in the virulence process including immune escape, invasion, colonization, destruction of host tissues, and nutrient scavenging. Among the predicted virulence factors, type IX secretion-mediated and cell-surface exposed proteins were identified including an atypical sialidase, a sphingomyelinase and a chondroitin AC lyase which activities were demonstrated in vitro.

Marine fish species exhibit low capacity to biosynthesise highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) in comparison to strict freshwater and anadromous species. It is admitted that the Delta(6) desaturase (FADS2) is a key enzyme in the HUFA biosynthetic pathway. We investigated by quantitative PCR the relative amounts of FADS2 mRNA in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in comparison with a salmonid species, the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss L.).
