As a radiology resident, my ego isnt really hurt that much by Joe Six-Pack not knowing Im a physician or that Im the one who diagnosed his HCC (too many six packs, it seems) on that CT scan, not his primary physician. The issue we have is that the patient not knowing or caring who we are makes it easier for others in the healthcare industry to turn radiology into a commodity (something were partially to blame for by hermiting in the reading room for the last couple decades, not to be seen or heard from beyond a written report). If the patients dont know or care who interprets their CT scan, why not save 25% by going with this teleradiology group? The patients dont know the difference, and these easy to measure turn-around times are excellent for this cheaper group ...

PURPOSE: Our purpose was to study the ability of personal computer teleradiology (PCT) to improve the quality of communication between physicians during newborn infant transfers and consultations. STUDY DESIGN: In the first part of the study 36 radiographs of neonatal intensive care unit patients were transmitted by PCT. The pediatrician reviewed the original films and three neonatologists reviewed the PCT images. Their interpretations were scored by use of criteria established by a neutral reader. In the second part chest x-ray films (CXR) of 31 newborns weighing more than 2000 grams with respiratory distress were transmitted by PCT. A pediatrician and three neonatologists participated in an exercise to simulate a telephone neonatology consultation. Cedar Lane Animal Clinic is a full service medical facility established in June of 1975 by Dr. James Bacon. The clinic is conveniently located in the Drug Fair Shopping Center at the corner of Cedar Grove Lane and Easton Avenue, just two blocks south of Interstate 287. We are less than 10 miles from downtown New Brunswick. The clinic contains 4 exam rooms, an in-patient treatment room, a dental treatment area, a surgical suite, a digital radiology room, a hospitalization ward, and pharmacy and administrative office space.

After slogging through your typical lobar pneumonia, bronchiolar pneumonia, and miliary cocciciomycosis pneumonia (ok, maybe not so typical), we reach the highlight image of the day. The small group facilitator clicks his snazzy InFocus clicker and a spiral CT chest image comes onto the screen. The group gets to work analyzing the image. Mediastinum... clear. Outside the lungs... clear. Lurking in the lower right lobe is a fascinating bright opacity. The group diligently examines said opacity, and discerns that it is a cavitary invasive lesion of the bronchus. It was invasive. It was big. And the local lymph nodes were enlarged and bright. A lossless bandwidth compression method for use in a distributed processor system for communicating graphical text data from a remote application server to a user workstation over a low bandwidth transport mechanism enables the workstation display to support the illusion that the application program is running locally rather than at the remote application server. At the application server, the graphical text data is represented by a string of glyphs, each glyph being a bit mask representing the foreground/background state of the graphical text data pixels. Each unique glyph is encoded by assigning a unique identification code (IDC). Each IDC is compared with the previous IDCs in the string and, if a match is found, the IDC is transmitted to the workstation. If a match with a prior IDC is not found, the IDC and the corresponding glyph pattern are transmitted to the workstation. At the workstation, the IDCs are queued in the order received while the glyph patterns are cached using the corresponding IDCs

The process of redirecting ions through 90° turns and tee switches utilizing Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulations (SLIM) was evaluated using theoretical and simulation methods at 4 Torr pressure. SIMION simulations were used to optimize and evaluate conditions for performing turns without loss of signal intensity or ion mobility resolving power. Fundamental considerations indicated that the race track effect during ion turns may incur only small losses to the ion mobility resolving power at 4 Torr pressure for the typical plume widths predicted in an optimized SLIM tee switch design. The dynamic switching of ions into orthogonal channels was also evaluated using SIMION ion trajectory simulations, and achieved similar performance. Simulation results were in close agreement with experimental results and were used to refine SLIM designs and applied potentials for their use. ...
