A medical radio telemetry system has a plurality of telemeters with one telemeter being located on each patient. Each telemeter is connected to the patient to collect data such as temperature, heart rate, pacer rate, respiration rate, brain activity level and blood pressure level. Each telemeter has a patient locator system that functions in conjunction with one or more room locator transmitters. The room locator transmitters are spaced in the rooms or area where the location of a patient is being monitored. A signal from the patient locator transmitter is passed to the patient telemeter. All signals received by the patient telemeter are transmitted to an antenna system that is connected to a receiver. Preferably, there is more than one antenna system with means for switching between the systems to obtain the best signal. Each telemeter has up to six channels so that six separate signals can be sent to the receiver simultaneously. The receiver is connected to a display means for the signals.
There is provided an improved telemetry system for use with implantable devices such as cardiac pacemakers and the like, for two-way telemetry between the implanted device and an external programmer. The system employs highly energy efficient oscillators with encoding circuits for synchronous transmission of data symbols, which symbols form the telemetry carrier. The system provides improved circuits for higher density data encoding of sinusoidal symbols, including improved combinations of BPSK, FSK, and ASK encoding. Embodiments of transmitters for both the implanted device and the external programmer, as well as modulator and demodulator circuits, are also disclosed, and specifically include oscillators which switch capacitors between a tank circuit and a recharge path, the switching being controlled to occur at moments of substantially zero coil current, thereby providing high efficiency operation.
As healthcare institutions focus on patient satisfaction to provide evidence of quality care, understanding patients expectations is essential to improve care. The purposes of this study are: (a) identify patient expectations of nursing care, (b) determine if expectations were met, and (c) compare patients expectations of care in an acute adult general medical unit and a progressive telemetry unit. Neumans Systems theory is the framework for the study. The sample will consist of 50 general medical patients and 50 medical telemetry patients preparing for discharge. Permission will be obtained from Ball State University, the participating hospital, and from patients. The patients name will not be identified. All data will remain anonymous. A new telemetric body temperature measurement system was evaluated by three independent laboratories for its research application in poultry, swine, beef, and dairy cattle. In the case of poultry and swine, the system employs surgery.free temperature sensors that are orally administered to allow short-term monitoring. Computational algorithms were developed and used to filter out spurious data. The results indicate that successful employment of the body-temperature measurement method-telemetric or other measurement systems such as rectal or tympanic method, will depend on the specific application. However, due to the cost of the system, the surgeries involved (in some applications), and the need for filtering of data, careful consideration needs to be given to ensure that telemetry is the ideal method for the experiment protocol.

Long distance migration can increase lifetime fitness, but can be costly, incurring increased energetic expenses and higher mortality risks. Stopover and other en route behaviors allow animals to rest and replenish energy stores and avoid or mitigate other hazards during migration. Some animals, such as soaring birds, can subsidize the energetic costs of migration by extracting energy from flowing air. However, it is unclear how these energy sources affect or interact with behavioral processes and stopover in long-distance soaring migrants. To understand these behaviors and the effects of processes that might enhance use of flight subsidies, we developed a flexible mechanistic model to predict how flight subsidies drive migrant behavior and movement processes. The novel modeling framework incorporated time-varying parameters informed by environmental covariates to characterize a continuous range of behaviors during migration. A method for controlling an implantable medical device is disclosed. In one embodiment, a voltage of a power source within the implantable medical device is monitored. If this voltage is above a first threshold, the implantable medical device enables the following functions: it listens for a first type of telemetry from a first external component; it listens for a second type of telemetry from an external charging component; and it provides stimulation to device electrodes using the power source. By contrast, if the power source voltage falls below the first threshold, the implant discontinues listening for the first type of telemetry from the first external component and discontinues providing stimulation to device electrodes using the power source, but continues to listen for the second type of telemetry.

Free-swimming movements of telemetered bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) were documented 24 h before treatment and 24 h during treatments at 60, 121 and 213 mg/L CO2 (mean concentrations in pond water). Several behavioral endpoints were then quantified and compared to evaluate deterrence efficacy. In general, results showed that both carp species responded similarly to CO2 treatments. Carps consistently relocated into areas away from the injection site and made fewer attempts to re-enter CO2 treated areas.
