These three goals-lower prices, higher quality, and rapid deployment of technologies-became the cornerstone of public policy regarding telecommunications. The intent was to create a better telecommunications environment that would benefit consumers as well as the economy as a whole. However, the Acts promise of consumer and economic advantages has proven elusive. After an initial surge in market entry and an increase in economic growth, investment, and jobs, the telecommunications industry has experienced an unprecedented economic contraction. Telecommunications capital spending by the incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs)-including descendents of the original regional Bell operating companies-and by newly formed competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) fell by about 50% from a peak in 2000.12 During the slump, these telecommunications industry providers experienced nearly a $1 trillion increase in corporate debt and a $2 trillion decrease in market value.13 The market value for ...

[Excerpt] In this paper, I address the question of how deregulation in the telecommunications industry has altered the internal labor market structure of clerical and sales jobs-that is, the traditionally female-dominated operator, service, and sales jobs in the industry. This question is important for several reasons. First, from the perspective of the internal labor market literature, the Bell System represented a classic example of a highly developed and stable system. Given growing conventional wisdom that internal labor markets are disintegrating, the telecommunications industry provides a useful case for examining the extent to which corporate responses to deregulation have led to an erosion of the prior system. Second, from the perspective of women and the labor market, the highly unionized telecommunications industry was one of the few service industries in which women found high-skilled, high-pay jobs, with long career ladders. Do these jobs continue to be high-skilled and to provide women with
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to the fore the critical importance of universal affordable access to internet connectivity. Despite efforts from the different stakeholders, universal affordable access is far from being achieved, as existing national operators focus their efforts on using technologies and building infrastructure in more profitable areas. This means sparsely populated areas, where household incomes are low and infrastructure costs are high, remain unconnected. As a result, there is an emerging consensus regarding the need to do something different from business as usual.. Based on recent changes in the telecommunications industry, this paper analyses solutions for the expansion of the telecommunication operator ecosystem. In particular it focuses on the local operator as the actor to fill the coverage and usage gaps left by national operators, in a complementary way. These local operators serve a much smaller and more distinct market, with deeper knowledge of their users, ...

Wouldnt it be great if you could get convenient training and even certification on Session Initiation Protocol? Now theres an excellent, cost-effective and convenient source for both training and certification - The SIP Schools online program, endorsed by TIA.. What is SIP?. Critical for todays telecommunications, SIP is a signaling protocol used to establish sessions in an IP network. A session might be a simple two-way telephone call or it might be a collaborative multi-media conference session. The ability to establish these sessions means that a host of innovative services becomes possible, such as voice-enriched e-commerce, web page click-to-dial, Instant Messaging with buddy lists, and IP Centrex services. The Voice over IP (VoIP) community has adopted SIP as its protocol of choice for signalling. SIP is an RFC standard (RFC 3261) from the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the body responsible for administering and developing the mechanisms that comprise the Internet. SIP is ...

A Sagnac interferometric based strain sensor has the potential to measure strain of less than 100 microns over distances of 10 km or more. By incorporating these strain sensors into telecommunication grade fiber otic cable it would be possible to monitor earth movement to high accuracy over very long links at low cost on a continual basis. This technique would be extremely complementary to systems based on the Global Positioning Satellite and Satellite based radar imaging. The potential exists for incorporating the system directly into the local, regional, and national fiber optic telecommunication infrastructure, which would for the first time allow widespread data on earth movement to be obtained. This information would be useful in studying precursory deformation related to earthquake and volcanic activity, landslides, movement of land due to river outflows, and other earth movement features that directly impact the environment. This system could be used to reduce risks in hazardous waste ...

Its hard to believe, knowing what we do now about smoking, that ads like these ever existed. Yet they did, and no one gave a second thought to smoking cigarettes. It was simply accepted as safe and even healthy.. Sound familiar?. Right now you are likely one of the 3 billion people in the world who owns and uses a cell phone. Never before in history have people used this technology so frequently, and on an ongoing basis, nor have they been exposed to the EMR that come from all types of wireless technologies like we are, on a daily basis.. Yet, most everyone assumes cell phones are safe, largely because they have been reassured by scientists heavily influenced by the telecommunication industry. Why shouldnt they, after all, as no big warnings have come out touting cell phone dangers.. Cell phones have been called the biggest public health issue since tobacco, and just as big tobacco did all they could to keep you convinced that cigarettes were healthy, the cell phone industry will do whats ...
The verdict is still out on this one. The radio frequency energy emitted by the mobile phone, and even non-communication devices, such as the microwave oven are considered non-ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation, on the other hand, comes from X-rays and exposure to cosmic rays.. We only know that high doses of ionizing radiation are associated with an increased risk of developing blood cancers. This form of radiation isnt the same as the radiofrequency radiation used in the telecommunications industry. However, the research has not possessed the ability to build up what kinds of non-ionizing radiation may lead to a tumour.. For example, rodents were found to have a higher incidence of malignant brain tumours when exposed to Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA for 2G and 3G phones), while those exposed to Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM for 4G telephones) had no association with cancer. Those were the partial results released by the US National Toxicology Program in May ...

The American Medical Association released its annual review of health insurance competition and, again, Michigan ranks among the 10 least-competitive states in the nation for health insurance.. The HHI Index, utilized by the Department of Justice to review mergers for prevention of monopolies, ranks any state with a score above 2500 as uncompetitive. Michigans score was 4562 this year.. The HHI Index is a calculation that measures percentage of market share. Our dominant carrier in Michigan maintains a 66 percent overall market share and a 78 percent market share in the PPO market, which is most utilized by employers, even after state regulatory, tax, and structural changes intended to improve competition.. The Maine-based New England Telehealth Consortium (NETC), which is working to link more than 400 healthcare facilities in northern New England to a telecommunications network, recently announced its 125th connection.. Connecting the 125th healthcare site to the NETC network is a testament to years of planning, designing, and building, Jim Rogers, the founder of NETC and President of ProInfoNet, the company managing the implementation of the NETC network, said in a statement. From satellites enabling mobile health vans to serve rural Maine to crystal clear long-distance consultations for surgery, NETC is powering a cost-savings healthcare revolution.. NETC is a regional group of rural and urban healthcare members, formed in response to the Federal Communications Commissions Rural Health Care Pilot Program of the Telecom Act of 1996. The Act dedicated funding for aiding rural hospitals, clinics, and physicians through advanced telecommunications. Now, healthcare facilities linking to NETCs ...
While I have always been extremely health conscious and am presently in excellent health, I did become temporarily out-of-commission (i.e. I was really sick) in 2005 with a number of at the time unexplainable symptoms. I was quite puzzled at the time because I had been eating mainly organically grown food, drinking spring water, doing Yoga every morning, and going to the gym several times a week. In other words, I was doing everything one is supposed to do to stay healthy. I was not supposed to get sick. It took me six months before discovering or even imagining the main source of the problem - which was in fact overexposure to electromagnetic - especially microwave - radiation. I was living within 200 meters of two cell phone towers at the time and within 500 meters of a 3rd one with numerous WiFi signals bleeding into my apartment from adjacent neighbors. I developed a host of symptoms, which are found in what has been misleadingly described as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) -- but much more ...

Second, they can help end the regions lack of modern infrastructure by working together in improving transportation, power supply, telecommunications and energy production. For transportation, China can help build the north-south corridor - a 2,000 km highway linking Kunming, capital of Yunnan province, and the Thai capital city of Bangkok via Laos. Japan, meanwhile, can aid the construction of the east-west corridor - a 1,500 km highway stretching from the port city of Da Nang on Vietnams east coast through Laos and Thailand to Myanmar. The crisscrossing corridors will serve as pivotal transportation arteries, powering the development of regional economy; link the maritime members of ASEAN to the east and south; extend westward to India and link the Mekong River with the Ganges River; provide access to China in the north and help speed up the integration of an emerging regional economic sphere. Also, according to a report by Nikkei News on April 29, Japan and China were discussing the ...
Direct consultation involves an individual with a skin condition contacting a dermatologist via telecommunication to request diagnosis and treatment. In this field, mobile applications of teledermatology gain importance. Telediagnosis in the absence of personal contact with health care workers to the individual is complex. It requires active participation of the individual and without appropriate guidance may lead to improper management. However, as a triage tool, leading the individual directly to the appropriate specialist for his/her disease, it could be very valuable in the near future. Specialist referral is a major area of application in teledermatology A general practitioner (or other medical professional) that sees the individual consults a specialist/ specialised centre via telecommunication in order to get a second opinion. The specialist then helps the GP in rendering a diagnosis, providing management options et cetera.[6] Home telehealth/telehomecare involves an individual with a ...

Consistent with the points we made throughout the drafting of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), ITTA members strongly believe that the $7.2 billion in broadband stimulus money should be focused on unserved parts of our country. Building out broadband to the unserved will do more to create jobs and open up new economic opportunity than diverting money to other purposes. Making broadband available everywhere will also facilitate other ARRA objectives, such as intelligent transportation systems, electronic medical health records and smart-grid technology. Unless ARRA’s limited funds are focused on bridging the gap between the broadband haves and have nots, ARRA could actually widen today’s digital divide. ARRA is an excellent start to close existing broadband gaps, but it is vitally important to ensure that funding is utilized as efficiently as possible to extend broadband’s reach as far as possible. Thus, connecting the ...

Content delivery and telecommunications are becoming rapidly intertwined in a converging world, bringing new opportunities but also likely leading to a dogfight among the high number of networks platforms for content delivery currently available, according to experts.. Not every horse can win the race at the same time, and there is a lesson there for convergence, David Wood, head of new media at the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), told Intellectual Property Watch. Every day a new means of providing media to the public seems to come out of the woodwork, all convinced they will be popular, valuable, and make a lot of money. But it cant happen. There will be winners and losers.. The EBU hosted a 21-22 June meeting of high-level experts jointly with the UN International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Our hope in organising the conference jointly with the EBU and ITU was to bring this into focus; and, if we accept that not everything can be successful, to see through to which would be ...

business has a responsibility to the community where they are conducting their business. That responsibility may be carried in many ways. Often companies support or sponsor community events such as medical camps, sports, school fees, festivals, scholarship and awards and environmental clean-up. Most organizations encourage their employees to get involved in their communities. It is not un-usual to find business people holding key positions as community volunteers. Most organization depends on such cadre of volunteers to accomplish their goals. Getting involved in such activities would repay the company in a thousand ways one never even knew existed (Fry and Keim: 94-106 ...
