Every week on Monday morning , the Council and our invited guests weigh in at the Watchers Forum, short takes on a major issue of the day, the culture, or daily living. This weeks question: What Will Be The Most Significant Technological Development of the Next Decade?. The Razor: There are two game changers I see on the horizon, although the timing is probably much longer than a decade.. The first is driverless cars. Human beings are terrible drivers compared to computers. Even the best drivers can be distracted or suffer poor judgment in an instant. It will take a while for people to trust their cars, but when they do, American life will be changed in ways not seen since the internal combustion engine chased horses off the road. People will enjoy the independence of the car without the danger and required concentration, and while Im not sure what this would mean to everyday life I would expect it to change.. The second is an electronic universal translator. Were already seeing these used ...

Although not as significant numerically, final heights of European men who reached maturity have also been increasing over the past two centuries, as shown in Table 2.2. In some countries, average heights increased by as much as 10 cm per century. Body weight has also increased. Figure 2.1 shows that for some age groups, the body mass index (BMI), a measure of weight adjusted for height (equal to kg/m increased by about 10-15% within the past 100 years. This chapter aims to elucidate the long-run relationship between labor productivity and body size. In particular, it will be shown that improvements in the nutritional status of a number of societies in Western Europe since the early eighteenth century may have initiated a virtuous circle of technophysio evolution. The theory of technophysio evolution posits the existence of a synergism between technological and physiological improvements that has produced a form of human evolution that is biological but not genetic, rapid, culturally ...

In 1972, the Office of Technology Assessment was set up to give the United States Congress information that would enable decision-making about technology that reflected a wide range of concerns, adopted a long-term horizon and had a sound factual basis. Nor was Australia immune from these ideas. In the late 1970s there was a Committee of Inquiry into Technological Change in Australia, known as the Myers Committee. It was tasked with a mission to examine, report and make recommendations on the process of technological change in Australia, in particular around issues such the possibility that some technologies might lead to massive unemployment. One result of this committee was the establishment of the Technological Change Committee of the Australian Science and Technology Council, with a mission to review on a continuing basis the processes and trends in technological change in Australia and elsewhere; and to evaluate and report on the direct and indirect effects of technological change at the ...
Autori: Marcel O. Vlad, Alexandru Dan Corlan, Vlad T. Popa, John Ross. Editorial: PNAS, 104, p.18398-1840, 2007.. Rezumat:. The portfolio effect is the increase of the stability of a system to random fluctuations with the increase of the number of random state variables due to spreading the risk among these variables; many examples exist in various areas of science and technology. We report the existence of an opposite effect, the decrease of stability to random fluctuations due to an increase of the number of random state variables. For successive industrial or biochemical processes of independent, random efficiencies, the stability of the total efficiency decreases with the increase of the number of processes. Depending on the variables considered, the same process may display both a portfolio as well as an anti-portfolio behavior. In disordered kinetics, the activation energy of a reaction or transport process is the result of a sum of random components. Although the total activation energy ...
BACKGROUND: UK primary care is highly computerized; initially led by enthusiastic general practitioners who developed their own systems. This preceded the development of a National Health Service information strategy and an ambitious National Programme for IT. MODEL: A 4-element model is proposed to explain the development of information technology: (1) individual clinician choice; (2) integration into the clinical task - usually an office visit; (3) technological developments; and (4) organizational factors. CONCLUSION: All 4 elements of this model have been tilted in favor of the utilization of information technology; lessons from the United Kingdom may help other health systems looking to implement information technology systems in primary care. © 2008 Wolters Kluwer Health | Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.
In line with many sources, up-to-date technological developments mixed with social networking and viral marketing, has led to an outbreak in one thing referred to as Nature Deficit Dysfunction. I also am indecisive on whether or not technology and new communication is helpful or not. Students do that on a regular basis when dictator-like policies and rules govern technology use. Change is also centered on FREE instruments that are already readily available in the classroom or that are easily accessed by Web download. Quick forward to 2016, and I now work with NUITEQ® as a K-12 technology specialist, and realized that the publish needed some updating.. Grownup learners can utilize technology instruments and apply new abilities instantly to on the job duties. Im a big fan of technology that helps us. But Ive seen far too much technology that tries to do the whole lot and will get in the way. Utilizing technology within the classroom will engage kids as they are excited to make use of ...
On the contrary: To the extent that technocriticism is about the advocacy of particular developmental outcomes it would seem to me that the fact that vast majorities of actually existing people are variously religious taken together with the fact that their religiosity will often have to be taken into account both in effective policy and in effective formulations of recommendation would imply the opposite sort of conclusion; namely, that technocentrism should take pains to remain alive to religions as abiding forces in the world we share and will continue to share in whatever futures come to pass. Further, to the extent that technocriticism is an occasion for documenting or theorizing about the impact of technology on peoples lives the fact that religious people are fully-real people and are impacted as much as anybody else by disruptive technological development and habitual prosthetic practices would likewise seem to imply the opposite sort of conclusion ...

Aimed at supporting the expressive potential of the experimentation in the eco-visualization field, there is today an actual technological development which has led to the evolution of the Sensing Technologies, computational graphics, network systems, real-time data processing applied to locative media and digital mapping.. This research approach characterises the interdisciplinary environment called eco-visualization or in other words adoption of art and design techniques in order to confer visibility to otherwise invisible environmental data in order to promote the awareness of energy depletion and environmental pollution through visual feedbacks.. The Eco-Visualization finds its historical roots in the Environmental Art, in the cultural and artistic activism of the 60s as well as in some collective performances of the 80s (J. Beuys, 7000 Oaks, 1982). It is based on the convergence of three fields media art, information visualization and affordable design.(1). Pioneer and theoretician of the ...
Its partly because of this problem that Im interested in how technology can help deliver training programs like Dore. Computers or games consoles are the perfect way to monitor the exercises and provide feedback so that the exercisers knows they are doing it correctly. This reduces wasted time, improves the rate of progress and most importantly, reduces the demand on the rest of the family. This all adds up to a more effective treatment with a lower drop-out rate.. One technological development that has a lot promise is the slowly emerging 3D cameras. These are not strictly speaking 3D cameras, instead they use a variety of methods to identify depth and distance. This information is then passed back to the computer which can use it to workout if objects are moving towards it or away from it. Something that is very hard to do with a traditional camera.. The best demonstration of this technology I can find is this Second Life demonstration. Second Life (SL) is a virtual reality world shared by ...

Support for health care reform is lacking from those surveyed who have experienced the greatest recent cost increases. Those who have experienced the highest recent price increases are also the least likely to see health care reform as potentially improving the situation. Thirty percent say they have seen costs increase by 9 percent or more annually over the last three years, and these companies have the most negative attitudes toward health care reform.. As employers have seen spikes in the cost of offering health care benefits, many report they have reacted by increasing premium costs, copays and deductibles for employees and dependents. With health care costs continuing to increase in recent years, fully 20 percent of employers say they have even seriously considered cessation of health care benefits.. So it seems that, while the social contract between employers and employees remains secure for the time being, there are signs that it is weakening among some employers. This suggests that as ...
Lack of adequate information per se is not the real problem facing members of Congress today. The real problem is that, for the most part, legislators neither understand nor seem to care about how best to govern and establish regulatory frameworks for new technology. As a result, Congress passes laws that threaten to slow down the progress of technological development, thus harming consumers while protecting incumbents. Assuming for the moment that there is some kind of horizon-scanning capability that a new OTA could provide, it necessarily fails, even on these terms. By the time Congress is sufficiently alarmed by a new or latent problem (or at least a politically relevant feature) of technology, the industry or product under examination has most likely already progressed far enough in its development that its far too late for Congress to do anything useful. Even though the NAPA reports authors seem to believe that a horizon scanning capability will help, in a dynamic economy, truly ...
