Bone scintrigraphy has traditionally been a "hot" spot imaging method. Improvements in equipment design have allowed detection of focal "cold" defects that may not have been appreciated in the past. Photopenic lesions are, however, difficult to recognize consistently; they may be obscured by overlying normal bone, or adjacent areas of increased uptake. Axial lesions, as in this case, tend to be easier to identify, because the higher count density in adjacent normal bone provides better contrast with the photopenic region.. Ive had a bone scan done of my hips down to my toes... my podiatrist ordered it cause they didnt know what was wrong with my feet, thought I might have a series of micro-fractures in them. So they did the bone scan to see. The white spots, like the technician said shows where there is more concentration of your blood. When you are injured or have broken bones, your body sends more blood to that area to try and fix the damage. Thats why they inject you with the radiation before the bone scan. So that your blood has time to route it to the "problem" areas. When they see the bone scan, they basically can see where you are having problems. I guess to rule out the fact that people try and say they have pain when they truly dont. Had meeting with my Orthopedic... I was hoping the bone scan was showing a fracture that somehow I banged my arm and cause a fracture with out much pain.
