The End of life Care Committee at Galway University Hospitals launched yesterday, Wednesday, 06 September the translation of their Bereavement & Post Mortem Information Booklets in Polish.. Ger Kilkelly, Patient Advice Liaison Service (PALS)/ End of Life Care Committee said, The booklets have been available in English for some time but in response to the growing diversity of families who have bereavements at the hospital, we looked at translating the booklets. The most commonly used interpreting service for GUH is Polish so this was the obvious language to start with. We hope that in the future with the continued support of hospital management we will translate the booklets into other commonly used languages. Even though we have the service of accredited interpreters we realised that there was a need for written information that the family can refer to in the weeks and months following a death.. Chris Kane, General Manager, University Hospital Galway said, Providing information and support to ...
Much kerfuffle at the NYT puzzle site last night. Apparently something in the formatting of this puzzle caused a big snafu and on-line subscribers couldnt get their puzzles until well after midnight (normal time: 10pm). Someone emailed me a bootleg copy of this puzzle in pdf format (from last weeks Marbles Amateur Crossword Tournament in Chicago, which used this weeks NYT puzzles), and so I printed it out and solved on paper. Came in at just under 6. I think thats pretty normal, especially factoring in the paper-solving (which almost always takes longer than keyboard-solving). It is news to no one that I am a big non-fan of this kind of puzzle. I hate taking the time to read a note (dont do it if I dont have to) and when I saw that the first theme clue was essentially gibberish, i.e. With this other answer, these letters in some illustration you cant see yet, all I felt was annoyance. I do not like being asked to draw on my puzzle. In fact, I refuse. So I ignored the theme answers ...

A long time ago, I was solving this puzzle and got stuck at an unguessable (to me) crossing: N. C. WYETH crossing NATICK at the N-I knew WYETH but forgot his initials, and NATICK ... is a small suburb of Boston that I had no hope of knowing. It was clued as someplace the Boston Marathon runs through (???). Anyway, NATICK- the more obscure name in that crossing-became shorthand for an unguessable cross, esp. where the cross involves two proper nouns, neither of which is exceedingly well known. NATICK took hold as crossword slang, and the term can now be both noun (I had a NATICK in the SW corner...) or verb (I got NATICKED by 50A / 34D ...

Disappointing. Tuesday theme on a Thursday = huge let-down. Puzzle was slightly more difficult than usual (for a Thursday) due to amped-up cluing, but at its core its just a first words puzzle, and not a terribly interesting one. I guess the low word count is what makes it tougher / later week. Shrug. There wasnt much value added there. Its not like the wide-open spaces were particularly scintillating. I mean, its all fine. Nothing offensive (unless you find the vomit implied by the EMETIC offensive). Just not a very interesting *Thursday* puzzle, and not really that interesting a puzzle for any day of the week. I finished with an error at what is perhaps the puzzles weirdest clue-12D: Honey-do list rejection. First, you dont reject an item on a honey-do list with a verbal rejoinder. Or … maybe you do, but the scenario is kind of forced / hard to imagine. Second, you dont reject an item on a honey-do list, period. You just do it. Or dont do it and hope she (Im making gender ...
This was a very easy Friday puzzle to me, as I never saw the theme until I was done, and with stacks of long Acrosses in the NW and SE corners, the grid looks/feels more themeless than themed. So its a Tuesday-type theme that played like a Wednesday but looked and felt like a Friday. And yet today is Thursday. No matter-I still had a good time. I think BEN STEINS is an unholy abomination of an answer (its an enormous partial trying to pretend that it isnt) (12D: Win whose money, in a bygone game show?), but everything else seems pretty solid, and the theme answers are bouncy (!) and original-seeming. I thought the theme would have something to do with fisherman, since there were those symmetrical answers about a [Fishermans relation?]. But that never panned out, and I finished the puzzle ... puzzled. Most befuddling part of the puzzle was the last letter I put in-the A in RAUCH (who?) (46D: Jon ___, at 611 the tallest player in Major League Baseball history) and ATL, which I did not ...
After I gave a talk at one high-tech firm in Silicon Valley, I asked some of the folks there how they wrote code. They said they actually visualized the whole programming tree, and then they just typed in the code on each branch in their minds. I recalled my autistic friend Sara R. S. Miller, a computer programmer, telling me that she could look at a coding pattern and spot an irregularity in the pattern. Then I called my friend Jennifer McIlwee Myers, another computer programmer who is autistic. I asked her if she saw programming branches. No, she said, she was not visual in that way; when she started studying computer science, she got a C in graphic design. But she did think in patterns. Writing code is like crossword puzzles, or sudoku, she said. (Crossword puzzles involve words, of course, while sudoku involves numbers. But what they have in common is pattern thinking ...
Bathpalathang Airport (IATA: BUT, ICAO: VQBT) is a domestic Bhutanese airport in Jakar (Bjakar), Bumthang District. One of only four airports in the country, it opened on 17 December 2011 with flights to Paro. The airport suspended operations in July 2012 due to runway damage, but it has since reopened to limited service.. The airport was in development from the Royal Bhutanese Governments 10th Five Year Plan (2008). The airport was originally scheduled to open in October 2010, and then delayed to November 2010. By December 2010, operations were pushed back to March 2011, then April 2011. Shortages in the spring prompted a new target date of July 2011, however the airport had not yet opened for operations through late 2011.. Airport construction at Bathpalathang met several delays, including soil instability under the runway, funding, labor and material shortages, and nearby river protection and diversion, each of which underpinned the ultimate success of any airport at the site. Despite ...

Club members learned how to insert an IV (intravenous) catheter into a pseudo dog arm which was supposed to mimic the cephalic veins. The cephalic vein is the main vein used for small animal medicine (dogs and cats). It is located on the front forelegs, running between the wrist joint and elbow of the animal. IV catheters are important for veterinary medicine because they supply medications and fluids directly into the patients bloodstream, providing rapid relief and care. At the station, students were given a pseudo dog arm with straw veins, IV catheter, and some tape to practice with. They learned how to stabilize the vein, angle the catheter (30 degree shallow angle) and advance(push) the catheter into the vein. The vet student also taught them how to check to see if they are inside the vein. Vet student Michelle said, You should feel a resistance when you first insert the needle and then you should feel an easy, smooth entrance when youre in the vein. After students placed their ...

At the stage before higher education, special education has been divided into preschool, basic education and senior high school. The education system is the same as in the rest of each phase of education, and each school needs to form special education classes. Separate special education schools are also established primarily for students with serious or multiple disabilities, while there are also special schools for students with hearing and visual impairments respectively. In order to meet the educational needs of special education students, the phases of education, the organization of the academic year, the education venues and way of implementation, the curriculum, teaching materials, and teaching and evaluation methods should all maintain flexibility. Evil, in a general sense, is defined by what it is not-the opposite or absence of good. It can be an extremely broad concept, although in everyday usage it is often more narrowly used to talk about profound wickedness. It is generally seen as taking multiple possible forms, such as the form of personal moral evil commonly associated with the word, or impersonal natural evil (as in the case of natural disasters or illnesses), and in religious thought, the form of the demonic or supernatural/eternal. While some religions, world views, and philosophies focus on good versus evil, others deny evils existence and usefulness in describing people.. ...

Digital Curation Many teachers would like to use more diverse literature in the classroom. But with a brand new class each year, its easy to fall back on read-alouds and literature circle picks that have worked in the past. As librarians, we can make our colleagues aware of the lack of diversity in childrens literature and invite them to be advocates of variety. One way to do this is to make resources easily available to them. I use Livebinders (www.livebinders.com), a virtual collection of resources formatted much like a physical binder with tabs and subtabs. I can imbed my binders in the library link of our schools homepage, or share the link with staff only. Heres an example of one binder Ive started to put together that contains resources for teaching middle grade books about the immigration experience in the U.S.: http://www.livebinders.com/play/play?id=821829 . For each book, Ive created a tab for authors websites, any teaching materials or curriculum guides, interviews, book ...
In Search of Shakespeare is a historical whodunit, a new four-part PBS documentary that explores Shakespeares life through the turbulent times in which he lived. CCT recently conducted a formative evaluation of the educational series and its accompanying, web-based teaching materials, located at PBS.org. As part of this research, CCT conducted a series of focus groups with educators to undertake a close analysis of the In Search of Shakespeare website, along with comparisons of the site to other Shakespeare sites popular among teachers. Our formative research was governed by a number of qualitative questions, including the following: ...
The impact of synthetic biology depends on the number and quality of scientists making significant contributions to the field. Future scientists will rise from current high school students who are excited about science and gain a solid background in math and science in their formative years. To this end, we decided to raise the awareness of high school students about the interdisciplinary field of synthetic biology and to also teach them about the process of scientific research. We decided to create teaching materials for high school students inspired by our teams research project. Our goal was that these materials can be easily used by a science teacher in a lecture in a Biology or Chemistry course to (1) explain what Synthetic Biology is (2) illustrate the opportunities created by Synthetic Biology in improving human well being (3) discuss ethical concerns related to Synthetic Biology (4) enable the students to understand how our biosensor works. To bridge the gap between the background of a ...
