A new construct, the Science Locus of Control (SciLOC) Orientation, was examined as a predictor of attitudes toward science teaching among 108 preservice elementary teachers. It is postulated that each person holds beliefs regarding the degree of his or her personal control in situations where decision, actions, or other modes of performance require either the application of scientific knowledge or the employment of inductive or deductive reasoning skills associated with scientific thinking. These beliefs give rise to behaviors, including expressed attitudes, which reflect the control orientation. At a recent meeting of biology faculty who have designed concept inventories, the characteristics and uses of concept inventories were defined. Concept inventories used as pre- and post-measures of student learning provide a window into students understanding of key concepts of a discipline and serve as a tool to motivate faculty toward evidence-based teaching habits. Early in my teaching career, I was reluctant to require attendance at lecture; it seemed rather heavy-handed. I now consider this a fundamental component of this teaching approach. The possibility of being called on at any moment creates a mild sense of apprehension in the classroom. As a consequence, students are usually very self-motivated to give at least a passable answer in front of their peers. If attendance were not required, this peer pressure would probably be a motivation for some students to avoid attending class, especially when they do not feel adequately prepared.. I respect the fact that the unexpected can happen in students lives, so the first unexcused absence from class does not affect their grade. Among humans, teaching various tasks is a complex process which relies on multiple means for interaction and learning, both on the part of the teacher and of the learner. Used together, these modalities lead to effective teaching and learning approaches, respectively. In the robotics domain, task teaching has been mostly addressed by using only one or very few of these interactions. In this paper we present an approach for teaching robots that relies on the key features and the general approach people use when teaching each other: first give a demonstration, then allow the learner to refine the acquired capabilities by practicing under the teacher’s supervision, involving a small number of trials.
