NADH dehydrogenase subunit-2 237 leucine/methionine (ND2-237 Leu/Met) polymorphism is associated with longevity in Japanese. A previous study has shown that ND2-237 Leu/Met polymorphism modulates the effects of green tea consumption on risk of hypertension. For men with ND2-237Leu, habitual green tea consumption may reduce the risk of hypertension. Moreover, there is a combined effect of ND2-237 Leu/Met polymorphism and alcohol consumption on risk of mildly decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (|90 ml/min/1.73 m2). Several beneficial effects of green tea on the kidney have been reported. The objective of this study was to investigate whether ND2-237 Leu/Met polymorphism modifies the effects of green tea consumption on risk of mildly decreased eGFR in male Japanese health check-up examinees. For ND2-237Leu genotypic men, after adjustment for confounding factors, green tea consumption may increase the risk of mildly decreased eGFR (P for trend = 0.016). The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for

Kombucha tea is a popular health beverage made by incubating the Kombucha mushroom in sweet black tea. Although advocates of Kombucha tea have attributed many therapeutic effects to the drink (1-3), its beneficial and/or adverse effects have not been determined scientifically. During April 1995, cases of unexplained severe illness (including one death) occurred in two persons in a rural town in northwestern Iowa who had been drinking Kombucha tea daily for approximately 2 months. Based on the findings of a preliminary investigation by the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), on April 10 IDPH issued a news release recommending that persons refrain from drinking Kombucha tea until the role of the tea in the two cases of illness had been evaluated fully. This report summarizes the investigation of these cases by the IDPH, CDC, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Patient 1 On April 1, a 59-year-old woman was found unconscious in her home by a neighbor and was transported to a local ...

Abstract:. Background: Treatment for type-2 diabetes mellitus focuses on the incretin hormone, Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1). However, it has a short half-life. Inhibition of the enzyme Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP IV) required maintaining the active form of GLP-1. Based on the previous studies on the highest activity of DPP IV enzyme inhibition of white tea extract, this study conducted on the fraction of white tea extract using rat blood serum (ex vivo). Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the inhibitory activity of fraction from white tea extract. Methods: White tea leaves extracted with ethanol. The inhibitory activity determined by using rat blood serum as DPP IV enzyme source (ex vivo), AMC (7-amino 4-methyl coumarin) as fluorescence substrate of DPP IV and sitagliptin as the standard reference. The the cleavage of fluorescence reaction product observed by a microplate reader with λex = 360 nm and λem = 460 nm at 37oC. Data expressed as mean ± SD and the IC50 value determined by ...
Scientists have shown that green tea extract can be considered a natural remedy, and can benefit cognitive functioning and memory - especially working memory (functional memory or short-term memory).. This tea is processed from the dried leaves of Camellia sinensis, an evergreen shrub. The teas that come from the same plant are green tea, black tea, and oolong tea. Green tea is prepared by steaming the freshly cut leaf. Green tea is consumed mostly in the following countries: China, Japan, and the countries of North Africa and the Middle East. Unlike black and oolong tea leaves, green tea leaves do not undergo a fermentation process. As a result, green tea has high levels of antioxidant compounds.. The people involved in this research conducted a study with the help of 12 healthy people to receive either a milk-based drink containing 27.5 grams of green tea extract or a milk-based drink without green tea. , while undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or magnetic resonance imaging ...

Although there are many legends about the discovery of tea, what is known for certain is that tea in its greenest and most natural form was discovered in China about 5,000 years ago. Unprocessed green tea leaves were used in Chinese medicine to treat a variety of ailments, including digestive problems, headaches, body aches, and weak immune systems. It was also used to improve overall well-being and life expectancy. For centuries, green tea was the only form of tea. The cultivation of green tea gradually spread to other Asian countries. To achieve the maximum therapeutic values of green tea for the skin and hair, it is imperative to ensure that the integrity of the plants nutrients are preserved. Fortunately, there are various ways to incorporate green tea as an additive in personal care products. The best way to take advantage of green tea in skin and hair care products is to incorporate it into formulas in extract form. In this way, the true essence of the green tea leaves can be
As we mentioned earlier green tea can be used to treat and prevent acne from the inside out. The simplest way to do this is to drink three to four cups of hot green tea on a daily basis. Its advised that you dont exceed this as some studies have shown that excess green tea consumption (6+ cups a day) may lead to liver toxicity.. This is all great of course but for some may sound pretty boring. Green tea can be something of an acquired taste - it is a little more bitter than black, white or oolong tea because of its lack of processing - and so some people find the thought of drinking those three to four cups of green tea per day a bit hard to swallow (if youll pardon the pun.). Drinking lots of store bought green tea mixed drinks is an alternative but not always a very good one. Green tea is most effective when you get as much of that EGCG from it as you can, and the green tea found in these drinks is usually heavily diluted. This dilution means there is less EGCG present, so it will be a less ...
The results of the present study demonstrate that ex vivo platelet aggregation in response to ADP and thrombin receptor-activating peptide is not inhibited in patients with CAD by acute or chronic consumption of tea, despite adequate absorption of tea flavonoids, as evidenced by increased total plasma catechin levels. These findings suggest that inhibition of platelet aggregation by tea flavonoids is unlikely to explain the apparent inverse association between tea consumption and atherosclerotic cardiovascular events.. Previous studies of inhibition of platelet aggregation in humans by use of flavonoid-containing foodstuffs have yielded conflicting data. In vitro studies have consistently shown that flavonoid-rich foods, such as red wine, and flavonoid extracts inhibit platelet aggregation11 ; the concentrations tested, however, have generally been higher than those that can be attained in vivo with nutritional supplements.35 Nevertheless, several recent reports have suggested that increased ...

Despite different drinking customs and a broad range in risk of death due to stroke, across the 6 countries studied, a consistent association is found. The pooled meta-analyses show tea consumption to be associated with reduced risk for occurrence of and mortality from stroke. Subjects drinking ≥3 cups of tea per day appear to reduce risk of a fatal or nonfatal stroke by approximately 21% as compared with nondrinkers of tea. The effect does not appear to be specific to green or black tea or to Asian or non-Asian populations. These findings suggest that tea drinking may be one of the most actionable lifestyle changes to significantly reduce the risk of stroke.. The term stroke is used in this article despite its imprecision, because it was the outcome most commonly reported on in the epidemiological literature. More desirable would be the incorporation of a more exact diagnosis of the stroke subtype and mechanism (small versus large vessel, secondary to atheroma or dissection) based on brain ...

Green tea (Camellia sinensis) is rich in catechins, of which (−)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant. Studies in animal models of carcinogenesis have shown that green tea and EGCG can inhibit tumorigenesis during the initiation, promotion and progression stages. Many potential mechanisms have been proposed including both antioxidant and pro-oxidant effects, but questions remain regarding the relevance of these mechanisms to cancer prevention. In the present review we will discuss the redox chemistry of the tea catechins and the current literature on the antioxidant and pro-oxidative effects of the green tea polyphenols as they relate to cancer prevention. We report that although the catechins are chemical antioxidants which can quench free radical species and chelate transition metals, there is evidence that some of the effects of these compounds may be related to induction of oxidative stress. Such pro-oxidant effects appear to be responsible for the induction of apoptosis ...
A 2009 meta-analysis of 12 studies indicated a borderline significant association between highest green tea consumption and reduced risk of lung cancer, and an increase in green tea consumption of two cups/day was associated with an 18% decreased risk of developing lung cancer.8 A newly published systematic review only included 5 human-related studies, and found insufficient evidence to support green tea use for preventing lung cancer.9 Another meta-analysis of 6 cohort/case control studies published in 2012 found significant nonlinear dose-response relationship between green tea consumption and risk of lung cancer, showing favourable effect of green tea consumption especially when the dose was more than 7 cups per day.10 ...

Lung cancer is the leading cause of all cancer deaths in Taiwan, said I-Hsin Lin, M.S., a student at Chung Shan Medical University in Taiwan. Tea, particularly green tea, has received a great deal of attention because tea polyphenols are strong antioxidants, and tea preparations have shown inhibitory activity against tumorigenesis. Past studies that have been poorly controlled have failed to prove that green tea reduces cancer risk, leading scientists to inconclusive evidence about whether green tea really does reduce cancer risk.. The scientists studied 340 healthy individuals and 170 people with lung cancer. Questionnaires were used to determine smoking status, dietary intake of fruits and vegetables, green tea consumption, cooking habits, and family history of lung cancer. The influence of drinking green tea and reduced risk of lung cancer was found by genotyping of insulin like growth factors IGF1, IGF2 and IGFBP3 that are associated with the development of lung cancer. Among the study ...
Just like the roasting of the coffee bean produces different flavored coffees, the fermenting of tea leaves produces different flavors. There are four common types of tea made from the same plant. The evergreen shrub is native to China and India. The Camellia sinensis plant is made into white, green, oolong and black teas.. Each type of tea has its distinct flavor and health benefits. The teas are given their names according to the way they are processed. Studies are finding that all these tea types have heart health benefits. White tea is produced from the buds and leaves of the Camellia sinensis shrub. It is the least processed. The unfermented buds and leaves are immediately steamed.. It has the highest antioxidant properties. White tea not only has heart health benefits, but it also has more cancer-fighting potential than the other teas. Green tea is made from unfermented leaves. It is widely known to have heart health benefits. It is made from leaves that are streamed.. Green tea has more ...

Each of the ingredients of bubble tea can have many variations depending on the tea store. Typically, different types of black tea, green tea, and sometimes white tea are used. Another variation called yuenyeung (鴛鴦, named after the Mandarin duck) originated in Hong Kong and consists of black tea, coffee, and milk. Decaffeinated versions of teas are sometimes available when the tea house freshly brews the tea base. Other varieties of the drink can include blended tea drinks. Some may be blended with ice cream. There are also smoothies that contain both tea and fruit. Although bubble tea originated in Taiwan, some bubble tea shops are starting to add in flavors which originate from other countries. For example, hibiscus flowers, saffron, cardamom, and rosewater are becoming popular.[5] Tapioca balls (boba) are the prevailing chewy spheres in bubble tea, but a wide range of other options can be used to add similar texture to the drink. These are usually black due to the brown sugar mixed in ...

In this report, we did gene expression analyses on both normal lungs and tumors treated with either green tea or polyphenon E to examine mechanistic questions regarding the efficacy of green tea or polyphenon E. We showed that a subset of the differentially expressed genes in tumors treated with green tea were reversed towards levels found in normal lungs, suggesting that they might be involved in mediating the chemopreventive effect of green tea or polyphenon E. We also identified a green tea gene expression signature that can readily discriminate green tea-treated lung tissues from those without exposure to green tea in mouse models.. As can be seen in Fig. 1, treatment with either polyphenon E (2.0% in diet) or green tea (0.6% in water) administered beginning 1 week following the last dose of carcinogen, decreased lung tumor multiplicity by 45% and 55%, respectively. Presuming consumption of 5 mL of water and a similar amount of feed, a 25 g animal would consume roughly 1.4 g/kg of green tea ...
WHAT IS BLACK TEA?. All tea comes from the leaves of one plant, Camellia sinensis, which is processed into four tea types: White, Green, Oolong and Black.. Regional conditions in the various tea-growing area of the world determine a teas profile, and one tea type can be quite different from another of its type in color, body, flavor and aroma.. In the case of Black Teas, the differences are noted in the names, which often are taken from the districts in the countries where they are grown. Variations include such names as Assam (India), Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Yunnan (China).. For all four teas, the main point differentiating them comes from processing. After being picked from the Camellia sinensis plant, both White and Green Teas remain as unoxidized teas, Oolong Tea is partially oxidized, and Black Tea is fully oxidized. Oxidation occurs when enzymes in the tea leaves are released and the leaf responds to the oxygen in the environment, causing the leaves to turn a bright copper ...

Tea is harvested by plucking the bud and the first two leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. Depending on the methods used to process tea leaves, three different types of tea can then be produced: green, oolong, and black tea.. Generally, after harvesting, the leaves are rolled, disrupting the cellular compartmentation and bringing phenolic compounds into contact with the enzyme polyphenol oxidase. In the production of green tea, the rolled leaves are steamed or dried immediately to inactivate the enzyme and minimize oxidation. In contrast, to produce black tea, the rolled leaves undergo oxidation (fermentation) before drying. Oolong tea is produced similarly to black tea, deploying a shorter fermentation period.. Tea is known to have a highly complex chemical composition comprising diverse polyphenols, purine alkaloids, polysaccharides, amino acids, vitamins, lipids, and volatiles. The predominant polyphenols contained in green tea are catechins (flavan-3-ols) such as gallocatechin, ...
A cup of green tea a day may keep the dentist away, according to new research from Japan. The finding, which appears in the latest edition of Preventive Medicine, shows that drinking at least one cup of green tea a day increases the odds of keeping your teeth as you age. The researchers suspect that antimicrobial molecules called catechins present in green tea and in lesser amounts in oolong tea provide the benefit. But be careful if you like your tea with sugar: sweetener may negate the effect, the team found. Green tea may have bacteriocidal effects, which would affect teeth, but only if you drink it without sugar, says Alfredo Morabia of Columbia University in New York and editor of Preventive Medicine, who wrote an editorial accompanying the new research. They also reported that drinking sweet coffee was actually deleterious, he sdds. Coffee alone had no problem, but sweet coffee would actually make you lose your teeth. Yasushi Koyama of the Tohoku University Graduate School of ...

Epidemiological studies demonstrate robust correlations between green tea consumption and reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and its cardiovascular complications. However, underlying molecular, cellular, and physiological mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Health promoting actions of green tea are often attributed to epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the most abundant polyphenol in green tea. Insulin resistance and endothelial dysfunction play key roles in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and its cardiovascular complications. Metabolic insulin resistance results from impaired insulin-mediated glucose disposal in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue, and blunted insulin-mediated suppression of hepatic glucose output that is often associated with endothelial/ vascular dysfunction. This endothelial dysfunction is itself caused, in part, by impaired insulin signaling in vascular endothelium resulting in reduced insulin-stimulated production of NO in arteries, and arterioles that regulate ...
Supporting: 1, Mentioning: 24 - Previous studies have demonstrated that (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a green tea polyphenol, protects against ischemia and reperfusion-induced injury in many organ systems. Here, we test the hypothesis that part of EGCGs neuroprotective effects may involve a modulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) after cerebral ischemia. C57BL/6 mice were subjected to 20 min of transient global cerebral ischemia. EGCG (50 mg/kg) or vehicle (saline) was administered i.p. immediately after ischemia. Brains were examined 3 days after ischemia. The effects of EGCG on MMP (gelatinase) activity and neuronal damage in the hippocampus were assessed. Gelatin gel zymography showed induction of active forms of MMP-9 protein after transient global cerebral ischemia. In situ zymography showed that ischemic gelatinase activity occurred primarily in pyramidal neuronal areas after brain ischemia. Mice treated with EGCG showed significantly reduced gelatinase levels. Neuronal damage was
TY - JOUR. T1 - The galloyl moiety of green tea catechins is the critical structural feature to inhibit fatty-acid synthase. AU - Wang, Xuan. AU - Song, Ke Sheng. AU - Guo, Qing Xiang. AU - Tian, Wei Xi. PY - 2003/11/15. Y1 - 2003/11/15. N2 - It has been reported that inhibition of fatty-acid synthase (FAS) is selectively cytotoxic to human cancer cells. Considerable interest has developed in identifying novel inhibitors of this enzyme complex. Our previous work showed that green tea (-)-epigallocatechin gallate can inhibit FAS in vitro. To elucidate the structure-activity relationship of the inhibitory effects of tea polyphenols, we investigated the inhibition kinetics of the major catechins and analogues. Ungallated catechins from green tea do not show obvious inhibition compared with gallated catechins. Another gallated catechin, (-)-epicatechin gallate, was also found as a potent inhibitor of FAS and its inhibition characteristics are similar to (-)-epigallocatechin gallate. Furthermore, the ...
Title:Novel Mechanisms of Anticancer Activities of Green Tea Component Epigallocatechin- 3-Gallate. VOLUME: 14 ISSUE: 6. Author(s):Le Zhang, Yaqing Wei and Jinsong Zhang. Affiliation:Key Laboratory of Tea Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Anhui Agricultural University of China, 130 West Changjiang Rd., Hefei 230036, Anhui, PR China.. Keywords:Cancer prevention, cancer therapy, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, 67-kDa laminin receptor, thioredoxin system, tea.. Abstract:After water, tea is the most widely consumed beverage. The major active constituents in green tea are catechins, of which epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) is the most abundant and active compound. Animal experimental studies using EGCG alone or green tea catechins with EGCG being a major component have generated a mounting body of evidence suggesting that EGCG as a naturally occurring compound and commonly consumed beverage ingredient is a promising cancer preventive agent. However, the relationship between green tea consumption and ...
Department of Dermatology, Case Western Reserve University, 11100 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44106, USA. Epidemiological, in vitro cell culture, and in vivo animal studies have shown that green tea or its constituent polyphenols, particularly its major polyphenol epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) may protect against many cancer types. In earlier studies, we showed that green tea polyphenol EGCG causes a G0/G1-phase cell cycle arrest and apoptosis of human epidermoid carcinoma (A431) cells. We also demonstrated that these effects of EGCG may be mediated through the inhibition of nuclear factor kappa B that has been associated with cell cycle regulation and cancer. In this study, employing A431 cells, we provide evidence for the involvement of cyclin kinase inhibitor (cki)-cyclin-cyclin-dependent kinase (cdk) machinery during cell cycle deregulation by EGCG. As shown by immunoblot analysis, EGCG treatment of the cells resulted in significant dose- and time-dependent (i) upregulation of the ...

The importance of GDH was underscored by features of hyperinsulinemia/hyperammonemia syndrome, where a dominant mutation causes the loss of inhibition by GTP and ATP. Here we report the effects of green tea polyphenols on GDH and insulin secretion. Of the four compounds tested, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and epicatechin gallate were found to inhibit GDH with nanomolar ED50 values and were therefore found to be as potent as the physiologically ...
Vascular Biology Laboratory, JM USDA-Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, Boston, MA 02111, USA. Epidemiological and animal studies have indicated that consumption of green tea and high vitamin E intake are associated with a reduced risk of developing certain forms of cancer. However, the inhibitory mechanism of green tea catechins and vitamin E in angiogenesis, an important process in tumor growth, has not been well established. In the present study, alpha-tocopherol and several major catechins of green tea (catechin, epicatechin, epicatechin gallate, epigallocatechin, and epigallocatechin gallate) were tested for their ability to inhibit tube formation in vitro using a model in which human microvascular endothelial cells were exposed to a constant rate of a physiologically low level of H2O2. In this model, the production of interleukin (IL)-8 by human microvascular endothelial cells at a low level of H2O2 was required for angiogenesis, as assessed by tube formation in ...

Tea from the tea plant, Camellia sinensis, helps to maintain cholesterol levels that are already within the normal range. Yunnan tuocha tea, in particular, has been researched for its health promoting properties. The Chinese attribute special qualities and health benefits to Yunnan tuocha tea. Traditionally, this mild and delicious black tea was used to help promote healthy digestion, especially of fat, and balance health. Green, black and oolong teas, cha, all are made from the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. Yunnan tuocha tea, however, is one of a few teas known as pu-er cha, made from an ancient subspecies of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis assamica. It is grown in the Yunnan province of southern China. Tuo cha means bowl-shaped tea. It refers to the method of shaping the pu-er tea during drying. Experts recommend drinking three cups of this tea everyday. Enjoy it hot or iced. Drink it as is, or try adding lemon and your favorite sweetener. Also, drink any of Triple Leaf Teas green, white or

Researchers from Rutgers Univ have published the result of a study in the journal Food and Function that explains a synergistic health-promoting relationship when green tea polyphenols and the flavonoid quercetin are provided through diet or supplementation. Quercetin helps boost the levels of green tea polyphenols in cancer cells to decrease methylation of their anti-cancer compounds, effectively increasing the green teas potency as a cancer-fighting agent. Quercetin boosts green tea antioxidant capacity two to fourfold to fight cancer development In past studies, scientists have demonstrated that green tea catechins undergo extensive methylation after ingestion, lowering the effectiveness of the health-promoting compounds to shield against cancer proliferation. Quercetin is a known inhibitor of methylation in normal metabolism, and a study was conducting using mice to determine if the naturally occurring flavonoid found in many fruits and vegetables could increase the potency of green tea ...

Catechins, flavanols found at high levels in green tea, have received significant attention due to their potential health benefits related to cancer, autoimmunity and metabolic disease, but little is known about the mechanisms by which these compounds affect cellular behavior. Here, we assess whether the model organism Dictyostelium discoideum is a useful tool with which to characterize the effects of catechins. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the most abundant and potent catechin in green tea, has significant effects on the Dictyostelium life cycle. In the presence of EGCG aggregation is delayed, cells do not stream and development is typically stalled at the loose aggregate stage. The developmental effects very likely result from defects in motility, as EGCG reduces both random movement and chemotaxis of Dictyostelium amoebae. These results suggest that catechins and their derivatives may be useful tools with which to better understand cell motility and development in Dictyostelium and that this
Green tea catechins are four molecules, high amounts of which are present in green tea and other sources. The most potent one is EGCG. It is effective in respect to most claims and potent in a few. Any fat burning benefits are dependent on being caffeine naive.
Second only to water, tea is one of the most popular beverages and is widely consumed throughout the world. Several forms of tea including green, black, oolong and white teas are prepared from the harvest of leaves from the Camellia sinensis plant. The teas differ by their processing and bioactive chemical contents. Green tea has been well-investigated and is recognized by ancient Chinese medicine as having many significant health effects on humans. In recent years, the health benefit effects of green tea are mainly attributed to high concentrations of polyphenols, which are collectively called catechins. Green tea contains five major catechins including: catechin, epicatechin, epicatechin gallate, epigallocatechin, and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG); the latter comprises more than 40% of the total polyphenolic mixture of green tea catechins. Epidemiological, experimental, and clinical studies have suggested several beneficial effects from consuming green tea: antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ...
Catechins or polyphenols have been shown to possess strong antioxidant properties (see article on antioxidants), thus preventing damage to DNA, and reducing risk of cancer cell formation. Through their antioxidant activity, the catechins in green tea also may profoundly reduce inflammation of the liver and gastrointestinal tract, providing a potential benefit in enteritis and hepatitis in small animals of almost any cause. The four major green tea catechins are epicatechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin gallate, and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCc). Of these four, EGCc is the most potent and physiologically active antioxidant. A typical cup of green tea contains between 300-400 mg of catechins, of which 10-30 mg is EGCc. Black tea also contains theoflavins and theorubigins, which inhibit carcinogens and protect against oxidative damage.. ...

Several pu-erh tea consumers have claimed that drinking pu-erh tea, especially aged pu-erh tea, can attenuate the pain of gout at the bone joint . The mechanism of this interesting clinical effect of pu-erh tea may come from the inhibitory effects of tea polyphenols on the uric acid-generating enzyme xanthine oxidase (XO) . The inhibitory effects of six tea polyphenols, namely, theaflavin (TF1), theaflavin-3-gallate (TF2), theaflavin-3,3-digallate (TF3), epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), gallic acid, and propyl gallate, on XO have been investigated 11 These six antioxidant compounds reduce oxidative stress in HL-60 cells . Theaflavins and EGCG inhibit XO to produce uric acid and also act as scavengers of superoxide TF3 acts as a competitive inhibitor and is the most potent inhibitor of XO among these compounds . It has been shown that pu-erh tea contains different levels of theaflavins, thearubigins, and higher polymerized catechins Therefore, pu-erh tea is expected to inhibit the XO activity ...

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) has been reported to affect many cellular regulatory pathways. This study aims to determine whether EGCG could target microRNA (miRNA), one of the mechanisms for cells to achieve subtle change in multiple targets. We found that, in both human and mouse lung cancer cells in culture, EGCG specifically upregulated the expression of miR-210, a major miRNA regulated by HIF-1α. Furthermore, we found that overexpression of miR-210 led to reduced cell proliferation rate and anchorage-independent growth as well as reduced sensitivity to EGCG. On the mechanisms of miR-210 regulation by EGCG, we demonstrated that the regulation was mediated through the hypoxia-response element in miR-210 promoter. Consistently, the upregulation of miR-210 was found to be correlated with the stabilized HIF-1α in lung cancer cell lines after EGCG treatment. This EGCG-induced stabilization of HIF-1α was further shown by the stabilization of HA-tagged HIF-1α but not the P402A/P564A-mutated ...

Background: An upward trend has been noted for the incidence of prostate cancer (PCa) in Vietnam, but information is limited on modifiable factors associated with this form of cancer. This case-control study was conducted to ascertain any relationship between habitual tea consumption and PCa risk. Materials and Methods: Two hundred and fifty-three incident patients with histologically confirmed PCa and 419 (340 community-based and 79 hospital-based) controls, matched by age, were recruited in Ho Chi Minh City during 2013-2015. Information on frequency, quantity and duration of tea consumption, together with demographics, habitual diet and lifestyle characteristics, was obtained by direct interviews using a validated questionnaire. Logistic regression analyses were performed to assess associations between tea consumption variables and PCa risk. Results: The control subjects reported higher tea consumption levels in terms of cumulative exposure, frequency and quantity of tea drank than the PCa patients.

Tea plant is known to be a hyper-accumulator of fluoride (F). Over-intake of F has been shown to have adverse effects on human health, e.g., dental fluorosis. Thus, understanding the mechanisms fluoride accumulation and developing potential approaches to decrease F uptake in tea plants might be beneficial for human health. In the present study, we found that pretreatment with the anion channel inhibitor NPPB reduced F accumulation in tea plants. Simultaneously, we observed that NPPB triggered Ca2+ efflux from mature zone of tea root and significantly increased relative CaM in tea roots. Besides, pretreatment with the Ca2+ chelator (EGTA) and CaM antagonists (CPZ and TFP) suppressed NPPB-elevated cytosolic Ca2+ fluorescence intensity and CaM concentration in tea roots, respectively. Interestingly, NPPB-inhibited F accumulation was found to be significantly alleviated in tea plants pretreated with either Ca2+ chelator (EGTA) or CaM antagonists (CPZ and TFP). In addition, NPPB significantly depolarized

Characterization and quantification of anthocyanins in selected tea cultivars processed into black (aerated) and green (unaerated) tea products was carried out in this study. The anthocyanins were extracted from tea products processed from a number of newly bred purple leaf coloured Kenyan tea cultivars (Camellia sinensis) using acidified methanol/HCl (99:1 v/v). Extracted anthocyanins were purified by C 18 solid phase extraction (SPE) catridges and characterised by HPLC-UV-Visible. They were identified according to their HPLC retention times, elution order and comparison with authentic standards that were available. Total monomeric anthocyanins were determined by the pH-differential method. Although the tea cultivars gave different yields of anthocyanins, the unaerated (green) teas had significantly (p 6 0.05) higher anthocyanin content than the aerated (black) teas. This was attributed to the degradation of anthocyanins by polyphenol oxidase products (catechin O-quinones) formed during the ...

The extensive history, contained in a single cup of loose leaf tea, is an exciting story that belies the gentle and relaxing nature of this mild beverage. Millions of people around the planet begin and end their day with a fresh cup of hot green tea or black tea.. Teas origin began in China, the birthplace of the first cultivated tea gardens along Yunnans southern border. Awareness of tea spread first from Yunnan, throughout China, then to the rest of Asia, and finally to the West.. By the time of the Shang Dynasty (1766-1050 BC), green tea was being consumed in Yunnan Province for its medical properties. For any given ailment, tea leaves were boiled with a host of other forest plants, seeds, barks, and leaves to concoct healing herbal remedies.. As the popularity of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Daoism spread throughout China, so did an awareness of life-enhancing tea. Each of these religious embraced loose leaf teas for its healthful virtues and powers of rejuvenation. The Tang dynasty ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Dynamic behavior of tea catechins interacting with lipid membranes as determined by NMR spectroscopy. AU - Uekusa, Yoshinori. AU - Kamihira, Miya. AU - Nakayama, Tsutomu. PY - 2007/11/28. Y1 - 2007/11/28. N2 - Interaction between tea catechins, such as epicatechin gallate (ECg) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg), and isotropic bicelle model lipid membranes was investigated by solution NMR techniques. 1H NMR measurements provided signals from the B-ring and the galloyl moiety in ECg and EGCg that were obviously shifted, and whose proton T1 relaxation times were shortened upon interaction of the catechins with the bicelles. These results indicate that the B-ring and the galloyl moiety play an important role in this interaction. Nuclear Overhauser effect spectrometry experiments demonstrated that the B-ring and the galloyl moiety are located near the γ-H in the phospholipid trimethylammonium group. On the basis of these findings, we propose that ECg and EGCg interact with the ...
Long-term green tea polyphenol supplementation could be an efficient protection against the health issues induced by high-voltage power lines.
Results-In the 1 066 718 person-years of follow-up, we documented the incidence of strokes (n=3425) and coronary heart disease (n=910). Compared with seldom drinking green tea, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) of all strokes were 0.86 (0.78-0.95) and 0.80 (0.73-0.89) in green tea 2 to 3 and ≥4 cups/d, respectively. Higher green tea consumption was associated with inverse risks of CVD and strokes subtypes. Compared with seldom drinking coffee, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) of all strokes were 0.89 (0.80-0.99), 0.80 (0.72-0.90), and 0.81 (0.72-0.91) for coffee 3 to 6 times/week and 1 and ≥2 times/day, respectively. Coffee consumption was associated with an inverse risk of CVD and cerebral infarction. Higher green tea or coffee consumption reduced the risks of CVD and stroke subtypes (especially in intracerebral hemorrhage, P for interaction between green tea and coffee=0.04). None of the significant association was ...
