Expansion of the aquaculture industry is limited by incomplete knowledge on fish larval nutritional requirements. Nevertheless, it is believed that dietary taurine deficiencies may be particularly critical for fish larvae. The reasons include the high taurine levels found during egg and yolk-sac stages of fish, suggesting that taurine may be of pivotal importance for larval development. Moreover, unlike aquaculture feeds, natural preys of fish larvae contain high taurine levels, and dietary taurine supplementation has been shown to increase larval growth in several fish species. Changes in urinary and plasma taurine and amino acids have been evaluated in trained runners competing in the Rotterdam Marathon, 1998, both immediately after completing the event and 24h after recovery. There were significant changes in the urinary amino acids excretion, the majority showing a significant decrease both immediately at the completion of the Marathon and after 24h recovery. In contrast urinary taurine excretion increased immediately post Marathon, although not significantly as the range of results was wide. SUMMARY: Taurine has been reported to be a component of the capsular polysaccharide of the encapsulated M strain of Staphylococcus aureus. This led to a study of the uptake and metabolism of [1,2-14C]taurine in a variety of encapsulated and unencapsulated S. aureus strains. Taurine was taken up by all strains studied. A discrepancy between uptake measured as depletion of radioactivity from growth medium and as cell-associated radioactivity suggested that taurine may be catabolized to CO2 in some strains. In most strains, cell-associated radioactivity was located mainly in cold TCA-soluble (pool metabolites) fractions.
