Talc supplies SiO2, MgO, CaO, and small amounts of Na2O, Al2O3, Fe2O3, and MnO. TX talc is reported to be less gassy than NY talc. Talc is a magnesium silicate mineral with theoretical composition 3MgO 4SiO2 H2O. Rocks made of talc are also known as Soapstone or Steatite. The talc used by potters (tremolitic talc) is usually a mixture of the minerals Tremolite (2CaO 5MgO 8SiO2 H2O), Serpentine (3MgO 2SiO2 2H2O), and Talc (3MgO 4SiO2 H2O), in an approximately 2:1:1 ratio by weight. Talc is formed by a complex metamorphic process from quartzite and dolomite. The process occurs in several stages; each stage produces a later mineral in the sequence. New York talc is mined by R.T. Vanderbilt Co., Inc. in St. Lawrence County, NY. This talc was formed in the Precambrian (over 600 million years ago). Talc is a common flux in low-fire clay bodies, especially white clay bodies, and is used as a flux in stoneware glazes ...
Background: Talc is the most effective chemical pleurodesis agent for patients with malignant pleural effusion. However, concerns have arisen about the safety of intrapleural application of talc, after reports of development of acute respiratory distress syndrome in 1-9% of treated patients. Our aim was to establish whether use of large-particle-size talc is safe in patients with malignant pleural effusion. Methods: We did a multicentre, open-label, prospective cohort study of 558 patients with malignant pleural effusion who underwent thoracoscopy and talc poudrage with 4 g of calibrated French large-particle talc in 13 European hospitals, and one in South Africa. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of acute respiratory distress syndrome after talc pleurodesis. Findings: No patients developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (frequency 0%, one-sided 95% CI 0-0·54%). 11 (2%) patients died within 30 days. Additionally, seven patients had non-fatal post-thoracoscopy complications (1·2%), ...
The recent $55 million judgment against Johnson & Johnson over the death of an African American woman with ovarian cancer not only revives previous concerns about the potential link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer but also raises important new questions about risk to African American women in particular. As far back as 1971, researchers in the UK noted talc particles in ovarian tumors, and in 2006 the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified talcum powder as a "possible human carcinogen" if used in the female genital area. Although a number of observational studies have linked use of talcum powder to increased risk of ovarian cancer, others have not, and a direct cause-and-effect relationship has never been proven. These observational studies may have suffered from recall bias and included mainly white women. The Food and Drug Administration has stated that there has been no conclusive evidence to establish causality, though it is plausible that talc may elicit a ...
A woman who filed a talcum powder lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson has reportedly been awarded $70 million by a jury. The woman alleged her ovarian cancer was the result of having used Johnson & Johnsons talcum powder for decades, although the defendants argued that claim is not based on science. Currently, research on the link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer is contradictory, and lawsuits have brought in mixed results. ...

In the mortality study, we compared death rates in talc workers to death rates in the general U.S. population. The U.S. rates gave us the number of expected deaths in workers.. Compared to the general public, talc workers were more likely to have non-cancer lung diseases (8 deaths found, about 3 expected). These include lung diseases caused by breathing in dust, as well as by smoking. Some lung diseases cause problems with breathing, which may be permanent.. Talc workers were also more likely to get lung cancer (17 found, about 8 expected). The interpretation of this finding has been a matter of debate because 8 of these people worked with talc for less than 1 year. This suggests that their work with talc may not be related to lung cancer. However, NIOSH believes that the lung cancer might have been linked to mining and milling talc at this site. Although smoking or work exposures at other jobs may have contributed to these deaths, we do not think they explain the entire excess. We believe talc ...
As concerns about baby powder being contaminated with asbestos mount, a new study finds a link between such contamination and a rare and deadly cancer.. A group of 33 people developed mesothelioma after long-term use of talcum powder and no exposure to other sources of asbestos, the report stated.. "All of them had significant exposure to talcum powder," said lead researcher Dr. Jacqueline Moline, a professor with Northwell Healths Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research in Manhasset, N.Y. "It wasnt like they sprinkled it on once a month. These were people who used it daily or many times a day for many, many years. They all used the powders, and then over time they developed the cancers," Moline said.. Just last week, Johnson & Johnson recalled a shipment of baby powder after U.S. authorities found it had been contaminated with asbestos - the first such recall in the companys history, a spokesman said.. Johnson & Johnson did not respond to a request for comment on Molines study, but said ...
The aim of this thesis work was to gain understanding of the interactions between talc mineral and surfaces, liquids and chemicals relevant for industrial applications, such as pulp and paper. Talc is used in the pulp and paper industry as a filler pigment, in control of pitch (lipophilic extractives) deposits and as a coating pigment. A deeper understanding of talc interactions will be beneficial in optimizing its use.. Long-range attractive interactions between talc and hydrophobic model probes, as well as pitch probes, have been measured using the atomic force microscope (AFM) colloidal probe method. Two procedures for preparation of pitch colloidal probes were developed to allow these studies. Model hydrophobic, nanorough surfaces with surface energy characteristics similar to talc have also been prepared and their interactions with hydrophobic model probes compared to interactions between hydrophobic model probes and talc. It is demonstrated that talc mineral interacts with model ...

studies in the 1990s reported small increases in ovarian cancer among women who use talc in the perineal area. Among nine studies reviewed by the 1994 International Society of Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology (ISRTP)/FDA workshop regarding consumer uses and health perspectives of Talc, eight studies found relative risks of 1.6 or less, and one had a non-significant relative risk of 3.9. The relative risks less then 2 are generally considered insufficient to establish biological significance. The one study with a non-significant relative risk of 3.9 cannot be separated from random error because it was based on only seven cases and three controls that used dusting powder. Additional epidemiology studies, completed since the ISRTP/FDA workshop, do not provide support that perineal talc use is associated with ovarian cancer. The experts attending the ISRTP/FDA Talc workshop concluded that the epidemiology studies did not demonstrate a real association between talc and ovarian cancer. Studies ...

Thousands of women throughout the United States may have developed ovarian cancer from side effects of talcum powder. Lawsuits are being investigated over allegedly inadequate warnings provided by manufacturers who sell talcum-based products under various different names, including Baby Powder, Body Powder and Talc Powder.. Concerns over the potential link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer has been suspected for decades. However, the manufacturers have sold talc body powder as a safe product, withholding important safety information from consumers.. As early as 1971, researchers found talc embedded in 75% of all ovarian tumors researchers studied. In addition, several studies and reports have confirmed that talc applied to a womans genital area may travel through the vagina and into the uterus, Fallopian tubes and ovaries.. In June 2013, a study published in the medical journal Cancer Prevention Research found that women who used talcum body powder as a feminine hygiene produce may face ...

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (Legal Newsline) - Judges continue to play a crucial role in the sprawling, possibly multibillion-dollar talcum powder litigation facing Johnson & Johnson by choosing how jurors will view the plaintiffs key expert.
Bloating, pelvic pain, urinary problems are late-stage symptoms of ovarian cancer, a disease which has recently been linked to genital use of talcum powder.
Yet another jury has determined that Johnson & Johnson should be punished substantially for failing to warn women about the risk of ovarian cancer from talcum powder, awarding more than $110 million in damages to a woman injured after using Johnsons Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower for decades.
The ramifications of the BMS ruling hit the Missouri litigation with the swiftness and ferocity of a lightning storm. An immediate mistrial for a current talcum powder trial was granted. Subsequently, J&J removed 1,300 cases to federal court for dismissal or transfer to the New Jersey MDL. Given that its headquarters are in New Jersey, the federal court there is decidedly friendlier ground for the company.. However, Eva Echeverria, 63, is suing on her home turf. Echeverria alleges that J&Js Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower products caused ovarian cancer. The approximately 300 Los Angeles talcum powder cases represent a considerably smaller docket than Missouris. However, a high-profile plaintiff verdict in the countrys most populous state could expose J&J to a tsunami of new lawsuits. This potential wave of California talcum powder trials could finally finish what the Missouri litigation started. If California talcum powder trial verdicts are anywhere near the few Missouri cases, then ...

Abstract. Purpose: Talc pleurodesis (TP) is employed worldwide for the management of persistent pneumothorax or pleural effusion, particularly of malignant origin. However, there are very little available data on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron-emission tomography/computed tomography (18F FDG PET/CT) response evaluation in malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) patients treated with TP and chemotherapy.. Methods: Patients with histologically confirmed MPM underwent TP and FDG PET/CT staging and restaging after 3-4 courses of chemotherapy. All patients fasted and received a dose of 5.18 MBq 18F-FDG per kilogram of body weight. Whole-body emission scans were acquired with and without Ordered Subset Expectation Maximization (OSEM) iterative reconstruction algorithm.. Results: From January 2004 to March 2010, 8 patients with biopsy confirmed MPM (7 epithelial, 1 biphasic), with a median age of 65 years (range: 54-77), were evaluated. Median follow-up was 31 months (range: 4-44). After TP treatment, ...
Paper: Talc is used in both uncoated and coated rotogravure papers where it improves printability as well as reducing surface friction, giving substantial improvements in productivity at the paper mill and print house. It also improves mattness and reduce ink scuff in offset papers. Used as pitch control agents, talc "cleans" the paper making process by adsorbing any sticky resinous particles in the pulp onto their platy surfaces, thereby preventing the agglomeration and deposition of these on the felts and calenders. As opposed to chemical pitch-control products that pollute the process water, talc is removed together with the pulp, enabling the papermaker to operate more easily in closed-circuit. In specialty papers such as colored papers or labels, talc helps to improve quality and productivity ...

Kazan, McClain, Satterley & Greenwood, PC of Oakland, CA announces a $117 million verdict for their clients Stephen and Kendra Lanzo, formerly of Lafayette, CA. A jury this week found that Johnsons Baby Powder contained asbestos, and that Johnson & Johnson Consumer, Inc. and its supplier Imerys Talc America, Inc. failed to adequately warn consumers of this fact, and further that Johnson & Johnson had a safer alternative design in cornstarch.. The jury awarded the Lanzos $37 million dollars as compensation for Stephen Lanzos asbestos cancer, mesothelioma, with 70% to Johnson & Johnson Consumer, Inc. and 30% to Imerys Talc America, Inc. The jury also awarded $80 million in punitive damages.. Trial counsel Joe Satterley explained that this historic victory was based on newly revealed confidential documents: "For the first time the jury was allowed to see secret, internal company documents showing that these companies knew that Johnsons talc Baby Powder contains asbestos. As a result, the jury ...

According to a legal complaint filed in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey on Thursday, February 8, investors suffered from losses when the price of Johnson & Johnsons stock plummeted after reports went public that the company knew decades ago that its talc products contained asbestos fibers that could cause cancer.. Johnson & Johnson is currently under hot water as it is facing thousands of consumer lawsuits over the alleged link between its talcum products - even baby powder - and ovarian cancer and mesothelioma. As of its last quarterly filing, Johnson & Johnson is facing around 5,500 lawsuits.. One of these lawsuits was lodged by Tina Herford in Los Angeles, alleging that the companys talcum powders can cause mesothelioma due to it being tinged with asbestos. Johnson & Johnson won in the ...

In December 1985 two physicians urged parents not to use baby powder, stating that it was unsafe to inhale and Johnson & Johnson responded with an official statement that "product is safe when used as it is intended".[38] In February 2016, J&J was ordered to pay $72 million in damages to the family of Jackie Fox, a 62-year-old woman who died of ovarian cancer in 2015. She had used Johnsons Baby Powder for many years. J&J claimed that the safety of cosmetic talc is supported by decades of scientific evidence and it plans to appeal the verdict. The British charity, Ovacome was quoted as saying that while there were 16 studies which showed that using talc increased the risk of ovarian cancer by around a third, and a 2013 review of US studies had similar results for genital, but not general, talcum powder use they were not convinced that the results were reliable. Furthermore, they said, "Ovarian cancer is a rare disease, and increasing a small risk by a third still gives a small risk."[citation ...

Recently, a long-simmering issue - whether talc (the mineral found in baby powder) can cause ovarian cancer if used in a womans genital area - has reemerged in the spotlight. Even though the question was first raised back in the early 1980s, scientists have still not reached a consensus on this topic. Some researchers suggest that talc can find its way into a womans reproductive system and then reach the ovaries, where it can cause scarring and inflammation that can eventually lead to cancer. Other medical professionals, though, are less certain about the existence of biologic mechanisms in which talc could influence the development of ovarian cancer.. According to Shelley Tworoger, PhD, a cancer epidemiologist and senior member at Moffitt Cancer Center, researchers have detected the presence of talc deeply embedded within some ovarian tumors. Furthermore, the results of some studies have established a clear link between the use of talcum powder and ovarian cancer. However, its important to ...
In this study, the influence of grinding parameters of talc sample in the conventional ballmill on water-based paint properties was investigated, and the results obtained from the experiments were statistically modeled. The regression analysis were designed to reveal the correlation between grinding parameters of the talc and the opacity and brightness of the paint with the recipes containing prepared mineral. In multivariate regression analysis, the differential grinding parameters were used to determine the change on opacity and brightness of the paint with a linear model between the change of the grinding parameters as the variables. Therefore, developed analysis includes a numerical model which could foresee the changes on final paint properties due to parameter changes (ball charge, material charge and time) in the grinding process. At the end of the experimental studies, the results indicated that the changes on brightness and opacity of a water-based paint are very dependant to the ...
PITTSBURGH -- Several defendants named in an asbestos-containing talcum powder lawsuit have moved to transfer venue, maintaining that a nearby county is more suitable to hear the claims. In an Oct. 2 brief filed in the Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas for Allegheny County explained that the plaintiffs live and allege exposure at the nearby Cumberland County. In an amended complaint filed Aug. 4, the plaintiffs stated that Mary Herron frequently used cosmetic talcum products for approximately 30 years, purchasing those products at the local Rite Aid Pharmacies. As a result of her use of these products -- which the ...

For single-port VATS talc pleurodesis Mean Survival Time was estimated at 14.849 months with SEM of 4.965. Median Survival Time was estimated at 2.900 months with standard error of 0.907 ...
New research from Wayne State University shows how talc exposure causes inflammation and creates an environment favorable to the growth of ovarian cancer.
A skin biopsy from a woman revealed necrotizing inflammation and some fat necrosis. There was focally abundant strongly birefringent material with some foreign body giant cell reaction. The photomicrographs illustrate the reaction, the crystalline material in H&E stains and with the silver stain (GMS). Several features help recognize cellulose particles and distinguish them from mineral talc particles. The cellulose particles often have a faint yellow or brown color and show cross or linear banding. Cellulose particles stain strongly with GMS stain but talc does not stain with GMS.. If necessary, additional analyses can be done using SEM/EDS to identify talc by its characteristic Mg and Si composition (See more on talcosis). Cellulose would show only Carbon and Oxygen peaks by EDS. To further delineate the molecular composition of such particles, Infrared or Raman spectroscopy may be useful, but these latter two are less available techniques than SEM/EDS.. In this case, the most likely source of ...
