BackgroundRussia is traditionally an endemic area for Taenia saginata infection, where a programme for the prevention of infection has been implemented for sixty years. This paper aims, therefore, to review the recent epidemiology data of Taenia saginata infection in the Russian Federation.MethodsWe undertook a systematic review of published and grey literature, and official data for information on the incidence, prevalence and distribution of Taenia saginata taeniosis and cysticercosis in the Russian Federation between 1st January 1991 and 31st December 2017.ResultsFrom the 404 records returned by our search strategy, we identified 17 official county reports, 17 papers and one meeting abstract on the occurrence of taeniosis or cysticercosis from the Russian Federation, eligible for inclusion in this study. In the Russian Federation, Taenia saginata infection has been continuously present and notifiable in the study period between 1991-2016. In the same area, a continuous decrease in the ...
Taeniasis is a parasitic disease due to infection with tapeworms belonging to the genus Taenia. Three tapeworm species cause taeniasis in humans, Taenia solium, Taenia saginata and Taenia asiatica.. On todays show, I will be talking to my guest, Parasitology teacher, author and friend of the show, Rosemary Drisdelle about the beef tapeworm, Taenia saginata.. Parasites: Tales of Humanitys Most Unwelcome Guests. ...
Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm) is a zoonotic parasite. The adult tapeworm lodges in the intestines of the human final host (taeniasis) and releases eggs, which are shed via the stool or by active expulsion. The intermediate cattle host acquires the infection by ingestion of these infective eggs via infected stool or environmental/feed/water contamination. Ingested eggs develop into cysticerci, primarily in the muscles (bovine cysticercosis, BCC). The human final host gets infected by consumption of raw/undercooked, infected beef. BCC causes significant economic losses to the farmers and meat sector. An infected carcass leads to degradation of the carcass value (50% price reduction due to the freezing treatment) or, in case of heavy infections, total condemnation.. ...
Abstract Nitazoxanide, a nitrothiazole derivative, was tested in 22 patients infected with Taenia saginata and 18 infected with Hymenolepis nana. A single 25 mg/kg body weight dose was effective against T. saginata, while twice this dose level (50 mg/kg), also as a single dose, was required for treating H. nana infection. Tolerance of the drug was good at both dose levels used.
The diagnostic values of seven serological tests (ELISAs) and of the obligatory European Union-approved routine visual meat inspection for the detection of Taenia saginata cysticercosis were investigated. A total of 793 slaughtered dairy cows were selected in three European Union approved abattoirs in Switzerland, an endemic area (apparent prevalence by enhanced meat inspection up to 4.5%) with typically low parasite burdens. ELISAs based on a somatic larval antigen, isoelectric focused somatic larval antigen, larval excretory/secretory antigens, peptide HP6-2, peptide Ts45S-10, pooled peptide solution and a monoclonal antibody antigen capture assay were initially screened. As there is no perfect diagnostic gold standard reference test, the obligatory meat inspection and four selected serological tests were further analysed using Bayesian inference to estimate the true prevalence and the diagnostic test sensitivities and specificities. The ELISA for specific antibody detection based on ...
Tapeworm infections occur infrequently in the United States (1) and those that do appear are usually subclinical. It is even less common for tapeworm infestation to occur in a patient also suffering from diabetes mellitus, Laennecs cirrhosis, and arteriosclerotic heart disease.. The purpose of this paper is to report a case of diarrhea and protracted weight loss in a 72-year-old male, which was originally attributed to digitalis toxicity and diabetes mellitus. The patient himself furnished the diagnosis by spontaneously passing an extensive segment of Taenia saginata proglottids. ...

Taenia saginata, also known as Taenia rhynchus saginata or the beef tape worm, is a parasite of both cattle and humans, which can only reproduce in humans. T. saginata occurs where cattle is raised, human feces is improperly disposed off, meat inspection programs are poor, and where meat is eaten without proper cooking. Of the 32 recognized species of Taenia, only Taenia solium and Taenia saginata are medically important. However, recent epidemiologic studies in Southeast Asia have identified a third Taenia species in humans, known as the Asian species 1,2 . Approximately 50 million people worldwide are infected by T saginata or T solium.. T. saginata is common in cattle-breeding regions. Areas with the highest (i.e. ,10%) prevalence are central Asia, the Near East, and central and eastern Africa 3 . Most individuals with taeniasis are either asymptomatic or have mild-to-moderate complaints.. Humans develop a tape-worm infection by eating raw or undercooked beef or pork. The cysticercus becomes ...

This expert meeting was implemented following the request of the Codex Committee on Food Hygiene (CCFH) which has been developing the Proposed Draft Guidelines for Control of Specific Zoonotic Parasites in Meat: Trichinella spp. and Taenia saginata. In November 2012, the 44th Session of the CCFH re-iterated the request of its 43rd session to FAO and WHO to develop risk-based examples for Trichinella spp. and Taenia saginata to illustrate the level of consumer protection likely to be achieved with different pre- and/or post-harvest risk management options, based on evaluation of slaughterhouse information and other data sources such as human illness. To facilitate the response, the CCFH requested the collection and review of existing information on risk-based examples for Trichinella spp. and Taenia saginata.. The proposed objectives of the meeting were:. ...
A previously described Taenia saginata HDP2 DNA sequence, a 4-kb polymorphic fragment, was previously used as the basis for developing PCR diagnostic protocols for the species-specific discrimination of T. saginata from T. solium and for the differentiation of T. saginata from T. asiatica. The latter was shown subsequently to lack the required specificity, so we undertook genetic studies of the HDP2 sequence from T. saginata and T. asiatica to determine why, and to develop a novel HDP2-PCR protocol for the simultaneous unambiguous identification of human taeniids. Sequencing and further analysis of the HDP2 DNA fragments of 19 Asiatic isolates of T. saginata and T. asiatica indicated that the HDP2 sequences of both species exhibited clear genomic variability, due to polymorphic variable fragments, that could correspond to the non-transcribed region of ribosomal DNA. This newly observed polymorphism allowed us to develop a novel, reproducible and reliable HDP2-PCR protocol which permitted the

Taenia solium has been ranked as the most important foodborne parasite and Taenia saginata as the most commonly found human Taenia tapeworm worldwide. The last official reports of taeniosis from Estonia were in 2003 for T. solium and 2012 for T. saginata. By law, all animal cases of cysticercosis must be registered and reported when found. Our aim was to estimate the prevalence of cysticercosis in Estonia caused by T. solium in pigs and T. saginata in cattle. The four slaughterhouses participating in the study slaughter between them approximately 80% of pigs and cattle in Estonia annually ...
Anatomical distribution and characterisation of cysts. The liver, shoulder, tongue, heart and masseter harboured at least one cyst. Shoulder muscles were the most frequently infected (30.5%), followed by the liver (22.6%) and tongue (18.5%) (see Table 3). Among the 177 cattle harbouring metacestodes of T. saginata (see Table 1), 131 (74.0%) had at least one cyst in a single organ or muscle whereas the remaining 46 (26.0%) had cysticerci in more than one organ or muscle.. The number of cysts found in a given organ or muscle ranged from one to nine; the highest number was recorded in the shoulder muscle. Among the different parts affected, shoulder muscles, liver and heart together accounted for 65.4%, 66.0% and 65.4% relative prevalence, cyst count and relative viability respectively (see Table 3 and Table 4).. Out of 661 cysts examined, 185 (28.0%), 284 (43.0%) and 192 (29.0%) were found to be viable, non-viable and calcified, respectively. The highest relative viability was recorded in the ...
Identification or diagnosis of the type of intestinal worms is important before treatment is ensued. While tape worms are large enough to be identified by naked eyes, other varieties of intestinal worms like pin worms can only be diagnosed using pathological microscopes.. This can be done by applying a scotch tape on the anus, in the morning before the toilet. The particles accumulated on the tape can be deposited on a glass slide which should be send to the laboratory for analysis.. The type of Intestinal worms can also be estimated based on the typical symptoms displayed by each type of worm.. Tapeworms enter the body due to foods contaminated by dogs and through undercooked food or meat.. There are two species of Tapeworm (taenia): Taenia Solium (beef tapeworm) and Taenia Saginata (pork tapeworm). Tapeworm resemble noodles, are white in color and mover in a wriggling motion.. Abdominal pain is the most common symptom of Tapeworm. This may or may not be accompanied by weight loss.. Roundworms: ...

Bovine-associated zoonotic infectious diseases pose a significant threat to human health in the Lao Peoples Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). In all, 905 cattle and buffalo serum samples collected in northern Lao PDR in 2006 were used to determine seroprevalence of five major bovine zoonotic infectious diseases that included Taenia saginata cysticercosis, bovine tuberculosis, Q-fever, bovine brucellosis, and bovine leptospirosis. Five enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) were used to test for the presence of antibodies to the diseases, except Taenia saginata, for which we tested for the presence of Taenia metacestode circulating antigens. The overall highest prevalence was for T. saginata (46.4%), with lower prevalence for Q-fever (4%), leptospirosis (3%), tuberculosis (1%), and brucellosis (0.2%). Although there were no significant differences in the proportion of seroprevalence between sex and age of the animals sampled, there were significant differences between the provincial ...
Epilepsy affects an estimated 10.5 million children worldwide, of whom 80% live in developing countries. The treatment gap is estimated at around 90% in the Lao Peoples Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). The present work analyses some of the reasons that could explain the low access to antiepileptic drugs (AED) for children with epilepsy in the Lao PDR. Epilepsy, the mad pig disease, is highly neglected. Traditional beliefs, fear and stigma are common among the general population and shared by 40% of health staff. Poor knowledge of the disease and its treatment, low trust in modern treatment, restricted access to AED and ignorance of long-term treatment explain the low access to AED. Improving understanding of epilepsy and its treatment, will improve the treatment gap for epileptic children in the Lao PDR.. ...

According to documents issued by the WHO [1], the term community health worker (CHW) refers to local healthcare workers who are not medical professionals such as doctors or nurses but who provide some form of healthcare service to the public after receiving required training. Although the titles and tasks performed by CHWs differ from country to country, the role that such workers play in local healthcare systems is universal [1]. At present, as efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), scheduled to end in 2015, reach a climax, it has been pointed out that improving the robustness of existing healthcare systems [2] and enhancing basic healthcare services are important to achieving goals related to health indicators [3, 4]. From that standpoint, it has been demonstrated that policies utilizing CHWs are effective in improving health indicators and that such strategies also excel in terms of cost-effectiveness [1, 5, 6].. At the same time that attention is being paid to the role ...

SEKONG PROVINCE, Lao Peoples Democratic Republic, 11 June 2012 ¬- Nearly 40 local nurses and doctors have gathered at the Health Department in Sekong, a rural province in southern Lao PDR.
The study showed that village headmen and their informants participated well in the questionnaire approach. The return rate was higher than expected, given that these groups received no specific preliminary information or incentives to collect the questionnaire at district health offices, to search for symptomatic villagers or to return the filled data sheets to the health offices. In extremely remote districts like Toumlane (Saravane province), the return rate reached 87% and the information provided was relevant; i.e., a strong correlation was found between the numbers of reported and confirmed chronic cough patients. However, the opposite was also found (e.g. Attapeu province) where the return rate was low (58%) with weak correlation, indicating that laypersons may have more difficulty assessing chronic cough than originally thought. In the context of the Lao Peoples Democratic Republic, coughing may be very common given poor housing and daily indoor exposure to tobacco and fuel ...

OBJECTIVES: In 2012, a stratified random survey, using mystery shoppers, was conducted to investigate the availability and quality of antibiotics sold to patients in the private sector in five southern provinces of the Lao Peoples Democratic Republic (Laos). METHODS: A total of 147 outlets were sampled in 10 districts. The active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) content measurements for 909 samples, including nine APIs (amoxicillin, ampicillin, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, ofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline and trimethoprim), were determined using HPLC. RESULTS: All the analysed samples contained the stated API and we found no evidence for falsification. All except one sample had all the units tested with %API values between 75% and 125% of the content stated on the label. However, we identified the presence of substandard antibiotics: 19.6% (201/1025) of samples had their units outside the 90%-110% content of the label claim and 60.2% (617/1025) of the samples had units outside of

Lao Peoples Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) submitted a request to Japan for 200,000 doses of expired foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) O type vaccines that were in storage for emergency use. Approximately 100,000 animals, consisting of both cattle and Asian water buffalo (Bubalus bubalus bubalis), received the same vaccine twice within one month in Xieng Khouang province in the northeast area of Lao PDR. Concurrently, the efficacy of three-month expired FMD O type vaccine (6PD50 O Manisa) was assessed in serum samples of 90 cattle and 31 buffalo from the field using a Liquid Phase Blocking-ELISA (LPBE) assay. Of these samples, 75 cattle (83.3%) and 24 buffalo (77.4%) were seropositive against the FMD virus (FMDV) O type before vaccination. Testing for non-structural protein (NSP) using the PrioCHECK FMD NS kit showed that many of the animals with high titers in the screening test before vaccination were FMDV-infected animals. Fifteen cattle and seven buffalo with titers 1:32 or under before ...

In April 2003, Médecins Sans Frontières launched an HIV/AIDS programme to provide free HAART to HIV-infected patients in Laos. Although HIV prevalence is estimated as low in this country, it has been increasing in the last years. This work reports the first results of an observational cohort study and it aims to identify the principal determinants of the CD4 cells evolution and to assess mortality among patients on HAART. We performed a retrospective database analysis on patients initiated on HAART between 2003 and 2009 (CD4|200cells/μL or WHO stage 4). We excluded from the analysis patients who were less than 16 years old and pregnant women. To explore the determinants of the CD4 reconstitution, a linear mixed model was adjusted. To identify typical trajectories of the CD4 cells, a latent trajectory analysis was carried out. Finally, a Cox proportional-hazards model was used to reveal predictors of mortality on HAART including appointment delay greater than 1 day. A total of 1365 patients entered

To date, the sharing behaviors associated with the homemade tobacco waterpipe used in rural areas of the Western Pacific Region have not been studied. Evidence from studies of manufactured waterpipes raises the possibility of infectious disease transmission due to waterpipe sharing. The objective of our pilot study in rural Lao Peoples Democratic Republic (PDR) was to identify and measure the prevalence of waterpipe sharing behaviors.
