METHODS: A modeled population is subject to only two diseases. Disease A is a curable disease that can be shortened by curative care. Disease B is an instantly fatal but preventable disease. Curative care workers are financed by public spending and private fees to cure disease A. Non-personal, preventive services are delivered by public health workers supported solely by public spending to prevent disease B. Complex networks seem to be ubiquitous objects in contemporary research, both in the natural and social sciences. An important area of research regarding the applicability and modeling of graph- theoretical-oriented approaches to complex systems, is the probabilistic inference of such networks. There exist different methods and algorithms designed for this purpose, most of them are inspired in statistical mechanics and rely on information theoretical grounds. An important shortcoming for most of these methods, when it comes to disentangle the actual structure of complex networks, is that they fail to distinguish between direct and indirect interactions. Here, we suggest a method to discover and assess for such indirect interactions within the framework of information theory. To adapt to such environments, clinicians may be required to make alterations to their workflows resulting in deviations from standard procedures. Some of these deviations are errors which can result in harmful outcomes. On the other hand, some of the deviations can be innovations, which are dynamic adjustments to the protocols made by people to adapt the current operational conditions and achieve high accuracy and efficiency. However, there is very little known about the underlying cognitive processes that are related to errors and innovations. In this work, deviations from standards in trauma critical care are studied.. Intensive care unit (ICU) blood glucose control algorithms were reviewed and analyzed in the context of linear systems theory and classical feedback control algorithms. Closed-loop performance was illustrated by applying the algorithms in simulation studies using an in silico model of an ICU patient. Steady-state and dynamic input-output analysis was used to provide insight about controller design and potential closed-loop performance. The proportional-integral-derivative, columnar insulin dosing (CID, Glucommander-like), and glucose regulation for intensive care patients (GRIP) algorithms were shown to have similar features and performance. The CID strategy is a time-varying proportional-only controller (no integral action), whereas the GRIP algorithm is a nonlinear controller with integral action. A minor modification to the GRIP algorithm was suggested to improve the closed-loop performance. Recommendations were made to guide control theorists on important ICU control topics worthy of further study.

Infants with unilateral brain lesions are at high risk of developing unilateral cerebral palsy (CP). Given the great plasticity of the young brain, possible interventions for infants at risk of unilateral CP deserve exploration. Constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) is known to be effective for older children with unilateral CP but is not systematically used for infants. The development of CIMT for infants (baby-CIMT) is described here, as is the methodology of an RCT comparing the effects on manual ability development of baby-CIMT versus baby-massage. The main hypothesis is that infants receiving baby-CIMT will develop manual ability in the involved hand faster than will infants receiving baby-massage in the first year of life. This spring eight F&ES students were invited to Flint, Michigan, to participate in a conference on the unfolding water crisis in the city, where lead was discovered in the public water supply. While many conference participants addressed specific infrastructure and economic actions needed to address the problem-such as engineering challenges and the urgency of replacing the citys water pipes-the Yale students talked about systems thinking, an approach to problem-solving that explicitly examines interactions between various components of a system. The group, which took the F&ES course Science to Solutions with Profs. Paul Anastas and Julie Zimmerman, made the case for how utilizing such an approach might help prevent the next Flint. It seemed to me the writer was more concerned about a non-existent baby than about the child who was with a grown man for all that time. Fourteen-year-olds do crazy things, and many times put their lives in danger due to lack of sound choices. (We dont know all the details regarding this situation yet.) Interestingly, no single case with human quadrupedalism was reported in the scientific literature after Childs first description in 1917 until the first report on the Uner Tan syndrome (UTS: quadrupedalism, mental retardation, and impaired speech or no speech)in 2005 (Tan, 2005, 2006). Between 2005 and 2010, 10 families exhibiting the syndrome were discovered in Turkey with 33 cases: 14 women (42.4%) and 19 men (57.6%). Including a few cases from other countries, there were 25 men (64.1%)and 14 women (35.9%). The number of men significantly exceeded the number of women (p , .05). A major challenge of modern teams lies in the coordination of the efforts not just of individuals within a team, but also of teams whose efforts are ultimately entwined with those of other teams. Despite this fact, much of the research on work teams fails to consider the external dependencies that exist in organizational teams and instead focuses on internal or within team processes. Multi-Team Systems Theory is used as a theoretical framework for understanding teams-of-teams organizational forms (Multi-Team Systems; MTSs); and leadership teams are proposed as one remedy that enable MTS members to dedicate needed resources to intra-team activities while ensuring effective synchronization of between-team activities. Two functions of leader teams were identified: strategy development and coordination facilitation; and a model was developed delineating the effects of the two leader roles on multi-team cognitions, processes, and performance. The objective of this study was to elucidate the possible importance of factors from the social environment for the development of depression. As a theoretical framework, Engels biopsychosocial model (Engel, 1980), based on systems theory, has been applied. Proceeding from the single individual (characterized by experience, personality, behaviour) as the highest level of the organismic hierarchy the following system levels have been taken into account: dyads, family, community, culture-subculture.. The depressive patients (n=lll) showed to be living in a narrowed social network and to lack confiding relationships compared with a non-psychiatric control sample (n=98). Graph isomorphism is not known to be in BQP. There has been a lot of work done on trying to put it in. A very intriguing observation is that graph isomorphism could be solved if quantum computers could solve the non-abelian hidden subgroup problem for the symmetric group (factoring and discrete log are solved by using the abelian hidden subgroup problem, which in turn is solved by applying the quantum Fourier transform on abelian groups). One of the ways people have tried to solve graph isomorphism was by applying the quantum Fourier transform for non-abelian groups. There are algorithms for the quantum Fourier transform for many non-abelian groups, including the symmetric group. Unfortunately, it appears that it may not be possible to use the quantum Fourier transform for the symmetric group to solve graph isomorphism; there have been quite a few papers written about this which show that it doesnt work, given various assumptions on the structure of the algorithm. Ive been lurking on this list for a while now -- and have decided to dump my 2 cents (in 1977 $$). Unas list reminds me of the general systems theory oriented biology text that James Miller published with McGraw-Hill in the mid 1970s. I think it ended a more traditional way -- with populations of organisms (e.g. population biology/ecology). Maybe the bothersome point in the list is the cross-ver (around pt 4-6) between world 1 (the natural world a la Popper) and world 3 -- the world of organized disseminated shared information that sensate beings (e.g. usns) CREATE based on our individual world 2s -- the world of individual perceptions/ subjective knowledge structures (a la Kenneth Boulding -- an economist who was also a GST person and introduced a lot of ecological models into his economics). According to risk systems theory and the characteristics of the chemical industry, an index system was established for risk assessment of enterprises in chemical industrial parks (CIPs) based on the inherent risk of the source, effectiveness of the prevention and control mechanism, and vulnerability of the receptor. A comprehensive risk assessment method based on catastrophe theory was then proposed and used to analyze the risk levels of ten major chemical enterprises in the Songmu Island CIP, China. According to the principle of equal distribution function, the chemical enterprise risk level was divided into the following five levels: 1.0 (very safe), 0.8 (safe), 0.6 (generally recognized as safe, GRAS), 0.4 (unsafe), 0.2 (very unsafe). The results revealed five enterprises (50%) with an unsafe risk level, and another five enterprises (50%) at the generally recognized as safe risk level.
