The effects of peripheral sympathectomy with nerve growth factor antiserum (NGFAS) on blood pressure, systemic hemodynamics, myocardial function, myocardial hypertrophy, and renin were studied in male spontaneously hypertensive (SH) rats of the Okamoto strain and normotensive control Kyoto-Wistar (WKY) rats. NGFAS prevented the developing of hypertension in the SH rats but did not alter blood pressure in the WKY rats. The NGFAS-treated SH rats developed the same hemodynamic abnormalities as the sham-treated rats, including increased peripheral vascular resistance and depressed cardiac output; Indices of left ventricular performance, including peak flow velocity, stroke power, stroke work, dP/dtmax, and flow acceleration (dF/dt), were diminished in the SH rats compared to the WKY rats. NGFAS treatment further depressed ventricular function in the SH rats, but had little effect on the WKY rats; Plasma renin activity in both the SH and WKY rats was unaffected by NGFAS treatment. Although NGFAS ...
We have attempted to evaluate the role of adrenergic nerves which arise from the superior cervical ganglia or which are intracerebral throughout their course, in the control of local cerebral blood flow (CBF). Hypothalamic blood flow (HBF) was measured in the conscious rabbit by the 133Xe-clearance technique. Stimulation of the upper brainstem, using 5-Hz, 3-V, 1-msec, square wave pulses, increased by HBF by a mean of 7.6 ml/100 g per min (P less than 0.005). This effect was abolished by the intrahypothalamic injection of the beta-adrenoreceptor blocker, propranolol, and by chemical sympathectomy of the hypothalamus or of the upper brainstem with 6-hydroxydopamine, but was not altered by bilateral cervical ganglionectomy. Intrahypothalamic injection of 0.1 mug of tyramine caused a mean decrease in HBF of 15.6 ml/100 g per min (P less than 0.001). This effect of intrahypothalamic injection of tyramine was abolished by bilateral cervical sympathectomy but not by chemical sympathectomy of the upper ...
In our vehicle-treated rats, pacing-induced tachycardia reduced common carotid artery distensibility, although it had no effect on a stiffer, muscle-type vessel such as the femoral artery. A different pattern was observed in sympathectomized animals, however, inasmuch as after sympathectomy, the carotid artery showed a significant increase in distensibility during sinus rhythm and maintained sensitivity to the stiffening effect of tachycardia. In contrast, in the femoral artery sympathectomy also brought about an increase in distensibility during sinus rhythm that was, however, accompanied by the appearance of a rate-dependent stiffening effect that had not been observed in the sympathetically intact rats.. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that the rate-dependent decrease in arterial distensibility is primarily due to the viscous nature of the vessel wall and thus to its inertial response to changes in intravascular pressure; this is in agreement with the data of Boutouyrie et al19 ...

The effects of widespread destruction of central catecholaminergic structures on systemic hemodynamics, ventricular performance, myocardial hypertrophy and the renin-angiotensin system in developing male spontaneously hypertensive rats of the Okamoto strain (SHR) and control normotensive Kyoto Wistar (WKY) rats were examined and contrasted with the effects of peripheral sympathectomy. Both centrally administered 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) and nerve growth factor antiserum (NGFAS) prevented the development of hypertension in the spontaneously hypertensive rats but did not affect blood pressure in the control rats. Peripheral vascular resistance remained elevated and cardiac and stroke indexes depressed in both 6-OHDA- and NGFAS-treated spontaneously hypertensive rats despite preservation of normal blood pressure. Ventricular performance was depressed in the sham-treated spontaneously hypertensive rats and was not improved by either treatment. Neither 6-OHDA nor NGFAS treatment prevented the ...
Bladder contraction may cause spasms, an introduction into the various causes of bladder spasms, clinical symptoms, investigation and treatment modalities.
From The Decision I mention bladder spasms above because of something that happened to me and because of experience with my patients whose prostate I have removed. The bladder is in essence a very large and strong muscle. Any manipulation of the bladder, including removing the prostate and then placing a catheter, can cause bladder…
At 11:30 PM I was taking my last urination when suddenly it stopped mid-stream, involuntarily. In about 20 seconds I went from feeling OK to down on my hands and knees groaning and gasping for breath. I could barely rasp out my wifes name loud enough to call her. I mean this was some of the most serious pain I have experienced. She called the on-call doctor at my doctors practice. It took them about 25 minutes to call back. By then my wife and daughters (16 & 21) had helped me semi-dress and get downstairs. Of course, the doc could only say, Go to the emergency room which I REALLY did not want to do. After a total of about 30 minutes the pain eased off, and eventually went away. My doctor called the next day and said, I heard you had some problems last night. After I recounted the experience, he said, It was probably a bladder spasm. Nothing to worry about. Well, I was REAL leary going through my routines that day, but it never happened again, and has not happened since ...

Results Sympathectomy during AIA induction or neonatal sympathectomy significantly reduced the severity of acute AIA. Neither sympathectomy in the immunisation phase nor in the chronic phase influenced AIA. Flare-up reactions were reduced by sympathectomy just before flare-up or during the initial acute AIA stage. Sympathectomised AIA mice showed less hyperalgesia. Sympathectomy significantly reduced interleukin (IL) 2, IL-17 and transforming growth factor β in supernatants from lymph nodes and/or spleen cells and antigen-specific Th1-associated IgG2a in serum; IgG1 titres were unaffected. The ß blocker, propranolol, and the norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor bupropion produced similar anti-inflammatory effects, whereas the ß-adrenergic agonist isoproterenol increased AIA severity in neonatally sympathectomised mice.. ...

Operations on the sympathetic nervous system designed to relieve hypertension have aroused considerable interest for a number of years. Results from the majority of the earlier procedures were so variable that many surgeons and physicians became skeptical as to the possibilities inherent in this form of therapy. It is only in the past seven years that the more radical lumbodorsal sympathectomy developed by Dr. Reginald Smithwick has shown sufficiently good results to revive enthusiasm over the surgical treatment of hypertension.. The technic for the perfected operative procedure was published in 1940.1 The purpose of the operation is to interrupt the ...
Mine lasted for about a week and a half. The worst were the first week, some would make me want to crawl the walls. I ate what I wanted, which was what the doctor said would be okay. They were not a problem after the catheter removal. They gave me a syringe to deflate the bulb in the bladder, and I removed it at home. Sure was glad to have that gone. I never could correlate them to anything, so my assumption was the catheter. The spasm medicine that they prescribed did work well, as I said, even on the times when I would have pain that would bring tears. The main thing is they did go away after the cath was gone. I am still working thru the leakage, but it is down to a pad or two a day now. Expect the first couple of days to leak alot, at least that was how mine went. Keagels do work, if slowly. I read from another post about a book called beyond keagels, and I recieved it the other day. It lists and shows about three more exercises to do, and I will begin those soon. I will let you know if they ...

Authors report 163 cases of lumbar sympathectomy they did under local anesthesia from 1968 to 1975. All were older--and poor risk patients. Approach was always lumbar with resection of distal part of the 12th rib. If good care is taken to do anesthesia infiltration of the five lower intercostal nerves and of the 1st and 2nd posterior lumbar nerves, anesthesia is quite good, and surgery easy and painless. The main advantages are:--easy excision of the first lumbar sympathetic node through this lumbar approach;--low lethality as far as authors consider almost no contra-indications;--very fast recovery of bowel movements;--immediate oral feeding which is important for diabetic patients;--no tracheal, bronchial or lung postoperative infestation or trouble. Patients have never had any trouble (convulsions) from lignocaine since gardenal is given in pre-anesthesia.

An operation that should only be tried after all else fails (apart from maybe Botox, Id skip that all together) is ETS or Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy.. The most common side effects of blushing surgery is droopy eyelid, chronically dry hands and extra sweating bellow the nipple line. As you cannot sweat above the nipple line after surgery, it is very common for patients to sweet a lot more under the nipple line. Many patients have regretted having the surgery, but for even more it has changed their life for the better.. The surgery is done differently by surgeons, some collapse a lung and some dont. Some cut the nerves responsible for Blushing and sweating, most modern-day procedures the nerves are clamped.. In most cases two incisions are made under the arm pit for a micro camera and small custom-made tool made for the operation, either to cut or clamp the nerves.. If you are really interested in the surgery then you will have to do a lot of research. How much is the blushing ETS surgery ...

INTRODUCTION: Thorascopic sympathectomy is accepted as an effective treatment for palmar hyperhidrosis, facial blushing and to a lesser extent for digital ischaemia and axillary hyperhidrosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data were collected retrospectively on patients undergoing thorascopic sympathectomy at St Peters Hospital between 1987 and 2006. Patients were followed up by telephone interview. RESULTS: A total of 233 thorascopic sympathectomy procedures were performed by a single operator in 123 patients. Ages ranged from 9-71 years and 75 were women. In patients, 105 had a bilateral and 13 a unilateral procedure, 5 patients had a bilateral procedure performed in two stages. In 6 upper limbs, the procedure could not be done. Overall, 110 patients (90%) had the procedure performed for palmar hyperhidrosis, 8 (6%) for facial blushing and in 5 (4%) patients the operation was performed for digital ischaemia with tissue loss. There were no deaths and all patients were discharged on day 1 following the

N2 - Introduction: Treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis with endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) became popular in the last decade. Following an increasing number of individuals receiving the procedure, a large number of them had reported to be suffering from post-operation side effects. Due to the diminutive percentage of devastating side effects, medical literatures had paid little attention towards this issue. For better understanding of side effects after ETS, we evaluate the websites built by sufferers who underwent this procedure. Methods: We knew the URL of the support group of compensatory sweating (CS) sufferers in Taiwan from the report of a local newspaper in August 2004. And upon browsing their website, we got the link to the Swedish Sympathetic Association, and through which we came across the ETS and ...

In this study we evaluated the mechanisms underlying s.c. and spinal intrathecal (i.t.) nicotine inhibition of bradykinin-induced plasma extravasation in the knee joint of the rat (J. Pharmacol. Exp. Ther. 262: 889-895, 1992; ibid., 264: 839-844, 1993). The dose-response curve for the inhibitory action of s.c. nicotine on bradykinin-induced plasma extravasation was attenuated by adrenal medullectomy and by intra-articular perfusion of ICI-118,551 (a beta-2 adrenoceptor antagonist). In addition, the dose-response curve of s.c. nicotine was attenuated by acute surgical lumbar sympathectomy and by intra-articular phentolamine (an alpha adrenoceptor antagonist). The dose-response curve for i.t. nicotine (up to 1 mg/kg) was not attenuated by intra-articular ICI-118,551 and was potentiated by adrenal medullectomy. The action of i.t. nicotine was also not affected by intra-articular phentolamine or by acute surgical lumbar sympathectomy. These results suggest that the inhibition of bradykinin-induced ...

I had this! I went through about 5 weeks of doctors, then my own research and trial and error. I found ALOT out. First I think I had a UTI, and they put me on three different antibiotics for 3 weeks. I think I was actually cured but I still kept having bladder spasms. I still dont know if its bladder spasms or interstitial cystitis (IC) but I have found out much that helps it. I did not have bacteria in my urinalysis the whole time. After the Cephalexin, Nitrofuraten (sp!), then Doxycycline they gave me Oxybutinin to stop the spasms so I could sleep at night. At this point I was feeling the constant need to pee and some burning after peeing. The Oxybutinin helped ALOT but I didnt like the side effects and I hate drugs. I probably did have a UTI at first because after about 2 days of the last two antibiotics the pain subsided and I thought I was on the mend. The third night of one of them I thought I was getting better so I had a huge meal and some spicy food in it. The next day it was worse ...

Endogenous norepinephrine content and retention of 3H-norepinephrine were investigated in the vas deferens, seminal vesicle, urinary bladder and left atrium of the guinea pig under several experimental conditions. Castration of adult guinea pigs resulted in a 50% reduction in wet weight of vas deferens and seminal vesicle. Reduction in weight of these tissues was accompanied by a proportional decrease in norepinephrine content and 3H-norepinephrine retention. Administration of testosterone (10 mg/kg s.c.) five times a week for 30 days to castrate adult animals increased the weight of vas deferens and seminal vesicle by 2-to 3-fold. Norepinephrine content and retention also revealed about 2-to 3-fold increase. In spite of simultaneous loss or gain in the wet weights of seminal vesicies and vasa deferentia, their endogenous amine concentration, expressed as micrograms per gram of tissue, remained remarkably constant under a wide variety of experimental conditions. Seventy-five days after ...
A urinary spasm or bladder spasm is a sudden, involuntary contraction of your bladder muscles that produces an urgent desire to urinate, according to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. If you do not respond by voluntarily urinating, the bladder spasm can cause urine to leak out of your bladder.Normal Bladder FunctionA properly functioning bladder is relaxed as it fills up with urine and begins to send signals to your brain to let you know that you need to urinate, according to the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse. When you decide to urinate, your bladder contracts to release the urine. A spa...
