Swine vesicular disease is a viral disease, characterized by the formation of vesicles and erosions, that affects only pigs. Although it can cause mild to severe illness, this infection is transient and not life-threatening. Its main significance is the strong resemblance to other vesicular diseases, particularly foot-and-mouth disease. Rapid differentiation of these diseases is critical, as the introduction of foot-andmouth disease could cause severe economic losses in non-endemic regions. In addition, the stability of swine vesicular disease virus in the environment complicates its eradication and makes prompt recognition essential for control.

Imports of pork rinds, a snack food made from deep-fried pork skins, are so well cooked that the risk of transmitting hog diseases, such as foot-and-mouth disease, swine vesicular disease, African swine fever and classical swine fever, is non-existent, said the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
The European Commission said that given the serious impact that animal disease outbreaks can have on human health, society, the economy and trade, the allocation of EU co-financing will continue to assist national authorities to put in place precautionary measures, disease surveillance and eradication programmes, at national and European level.. Overall 142 programmes have been selected for EU funding: Bovine Tuberculosis (about €56 million); Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (about €42 million); Rabies (€27.5 million); Salmonellosis (about €17.5 million); Bovine Brucellosis (about €10 million); Classical Swine Fever (€3 million); Avian Influenza (€2.5 million); Bluetongue (€1.5 million); African Swine Fever and Swine Vesicular Disease in Italy (about €850.000).. EU co-financing has resulted in a continuous decrease in the number of cases of diseases, such as Salmonellosis (the second most frequently reported zoonotic disease in humans) and Transmissible Spongiform ...
p-Toluenesulfonamide is formed from chloramine-T, an antimicrobial agent used by the aquaculture industry to treat fish intended for human consumption. Chloramine-T is also widely used as a disinfectant in the medical, dental, veterinary, food processing, and agricultural industries. Because of its low degree of cytotoxicity, chloramine-T has been used in direct contact with tissues, including treatment for burns, in whirlpools for wounds, and as an oral mouthwash. In the agricultural industry, it is used as a broad-spectrum biocide for foot-and-mouth disease, swine vesicular disease, and poultry diseases. Chloramine-T was nominated by a private individual for toxicology studies based on its current status as an Investigational New Animal Drug for controlling proliferative gill disease and bacterial gill disease in aquaculture and the need for additional toxicology studies to support its safe use. p-Toluenesulfonamide was studied for toxicity by the NTP because it has been shown to be the major ...
Senecavirus A (SVA) is a positive sense single-stranded virus that belongs to the genus Senecavirus within the family Picornaviridae. Senecavirus has been present in US swine population since 1988. However, there have been only a few reports of SVA associated with disease in last two decades. In late 2014 early 2015, a sudden increase in the number of cases of Senecavirus A associated with vesicular disease was observed in Brazil, the US and China. Affected pigs presented vesicles on snout, coronary band, and dewclaw. Additionaly, increased neonatal mortality has been reported in the field. Many aspects of SVA epidemiology, infection biology, and pathogenesis, remain unknown. Also, the cause(s) for the recent emergence of SVA in swine remains unknown. The objectives of our study were - 1) To investigate epidemiological factors that may contribute to SVA spread in the field and 2) To assess the pathogenesis and infection dynamics of SVA in finishing pigs. In our first study, a diagnostic investigation

Microarray technology can be useful for pathogen detection as it allows simultaneous interrogation of the presence or absence of a large number of genetic signatures. However, most microarray assays are labour-intensive and time-consuming to perform. This study describes the development and initial evaluation of a multiplex reverse transcription (RT)-PCR and novel accompanying automated electronic microarray assay for simultaneous detection and differentiation of seven important viruses that affect swine (foot-and-mouth disease virus [FMDV], swine vesicular disease virus [SVDV], vesicular exanthema of swine virus [VESV], African swine fever virus [ASFV], classical swine fever virus [CSFV], porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome virus [PRRSV] and porcine circovirus type 2 [PCV2 ...
Introduction. Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious disease that affects cloven-hooved animals such as cattle, sheep, goats and pigs. FMD outbreaks have occured worldwide, resulting in significant economic losses (Knowles & Samuel 2003). Early identification of FMD virus (FMDV) is, therefore, critical for the control of disease and to minimise losses that could occur in livestock. Rapid and accurate diagnosis of FMDV is required for effective disease control. FMD cannot be distinguished clinically from other vesicular diseases, such as swine vesicular disease (SVD), vesicular exanthema of swine (VES) and vesicular stomatitis (VS); similarities that can pose challenges for early confirmation of field outbreaks. Routine laboratory diagnosis of FMD can be performed by a combination of antigen-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and virus isolation (OIE 2012). Antigen-capture ELISA only takes four hours to perform; however, this test is only suitable for epithelium ...

November 24, 2010 - The U.S. Department of Agricultures Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is amending its regulations governing the importation of certain animals and animal products by adding the Brazilian State of Santa Catarina to the list of regions we recognize as free of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), rinderpest, swine vesicular disease (SVD), classical swine fever (CSF) and African swine fever (ASF). APHIS is also adding Santa Catarina to the list of regions that are subject to certain import restrictions on meat and meat products because of their proximity to or trading relationships with rinderpest- or FMD-affected countries. These actions will update the disease status of Santa Catarina with regard to FMD, rinderpest, SVD, CSF and ASF while continuing to protect the United States from an introduction of those diseases by providing additional requirements for live swine, pork meat, pork products, live ruminants, ruminant meat and ruminant products imported into the ...
APHIS has determined that the Republic of Cyprus is free of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), rinderpest, and swine vesicular disease (SVD), and is low risk for classical swine fever (CSF). This determination will allow the importation of meat and meat products into the United States from Cyprus under certain restrictions, while continuing to mitigate the risk of introducing these diseases into the United States. While this action covers the majority of the country, it does not include areas north of the United Nations buffer zone, known as the Green Line ...
by Sylvia Poggioli. American gourmets and lovers of Italian food products, your days as food smugglers as over.. No more stuffing your suitcases with delicacies bought in Italy, hoping the sniffer dogs at JFK or other American airports wont detect the banned-in-the-USA foodstuffs inside your luggage.. In the U.S., theyre called cured meats, the French say charcuterie and in Italy, the word for cured-pork products is salumi. Starting May 28, a four-decades-old ban on the import of many Italian salumi will be lifted.. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that the Italian regions of Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto and Piedmont, and the provinces of Trento and Bolzano, are free of swine vesicular diseases. Imports of pork products from those areas, says USDA, present a low risk of introducing the disease into the U.S. The disease was first detected in the 1960s and can survive cooking and even long curing.. Up to now, only few Italian pork products were approved for import to the ...
Foot and mouth disease (FMD), is a highly infectious vesicular disease of cloven footed animals, primarily of cattle, swine and occasionally of sheep, deer and bison.. Outbreaks of this disease in previously FMD free countries have caused billions of dollars in economic losses related to eradication efforts and trade bans.. Losses from death are insignificant though, the disease has great economic importance because animals are left by its poor condition for meat, milk production and breeding purposes. The disease spreads rapidly directly or indirectly through contaminated feed, water, in milk or in garbage containing contaminated meat. The saliva of the infected animal carries the causative agent. It is caused by one of the smallest filterable viruses and is not stable and may form many types or subtypes.. With this development, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists, have been able to make a breakthrough in identifying specifically where the FMD virus starts infection in ...
VS is prevalent in northern South America, throughout Central America, and at one site in the United States: Ossabaw Island, Georgia. However, outbreaks of VS have been reported in the western United States, northern Mexico, and temperate regions of South America. The disease can cause blisters on an animals mouth, teats or hooves. Clinical outbreaks of VS in livestock can result in significant economic impact on producers and extensive regulatory responses by governmental agencies, including trade restrictions, market closures, and quarantines. Such measures are needed because of the clinical similarities between VS and foot-and-mouth disease and other foreign vesicular diseases in livestock species. ...
Scabetic Eczema, also known as scabies is an infectious skin disease which is caused due to the infestation of mites burrowed beneath the surface of the skin. Scabies often occurs on the less exposed parts of the body including buttocks, breasts, groin areas, auxiliary folds, finger webs and elbows. These could be spread by coming into direct or indirect contact with the affected areas.. Some of the symptoms attached to scabies are rash, itching, scratching and reddening of the affected parts. These mites are burrowed beneath the surface of the skin and therefore there could be allergic reactions caused by the eggs or faeces of the mites. Scabies happens to be a vesicular disease, where the intensity of the itching would lead to extreme scratching. This would lead to all the symptoms which might appear as eczema initially. The symptoms of scabies do not usually appear until it gets worse. The length of the scabetic burrows is about 1.5 to 3.0mm and the width is about 1mm. In some rare cases, the ...
Vesicular stomatitis virus of the New Jersey serotype (VSV-NJ) causes vesicular disease in cattle, pigs, and horses throughout the Americas. Vesicular disease is clinically indistinguishable from foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). Therefore, outbreaks of vesicular disease in FMD-free areas must be rapidly diagnosed by laboratory methods and affected farms must be quarantined until laboratory results confirm the absence of FMD. Diagnosis is currently performed in high-containment (biosafety level 3) laboratories by using complement fixation and virus isolation in tissue culture. We describe here an alternative method for the detection of VSV-NJ RNA in clinical samples. This method includes a rapid acid guanidine-phenol RNA extraction procedure coupled with a one-tube polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using reverse transcriptase. By using this test, we were able to detect the largest number of positive samples (53 of 58), followed by complement (48 of 58) and isolation in tissue culture (43 of 58). The ...
Senecavirus A, commonly known as Seneca Valley virus (SVV), is a picornavirus that has been infrequently associated with porcine idiopathic vesicular disease (PIVD). In late 2014 there were multiple PIVD outbreaks in several states in Brazil and samples from those cases tested positive for SVV. Beginning in July of 2015, multiple cases of PIVD were reported in the United States in which a genetically similar SVV was also detected. These events suggested SVV could induce vesicular disease, which was recently demonstrated with contemporary US isolates that produced mild disease in pigs. It was hypothesized that stressful conditions may exacerbate the expression of clinical disease and the following experiment was performed. Two groups of 9-week-old pigs were given an intranasal SVV challenge with one group receiving an immunosuppressive dose of dexamethasone prior to challenge. After challenge animals were observed for the development of clinical signs and serum and swabs were collected to study viral

It thus follows that the Ricci tensor is completely determined by knowing the quantity Ric(ξ,ξ) for all vectors ξ of unit length. This function on the set of unit tangent vectors is often simply called the Ricci curvature, since knowing it is equivalent to knowing the Ricci curvature tensor. The Ricci curvature is determined by the sectional curvatures of a Riemannian manifold, but generally contains less information. Indeed, if ξ is a vector of unit length on a Riemannian n-manifold, then Ric(ξ,ξ) is precisely (n − 1) times the average value of the sectional curvature, taken over all the 2-planes containing ξ. There is an (n − 2)-dimensional family of such 2-planes, and so only in dimensions 2 and 3 does the Ricci tensor determine the full curvature tensor. A notable exception is when the manifold is given a priori as a hypersurface of Euclidean space. The second fundamental form, which determines the full curvature via the Gauss-Codazzi equation, is itself determined by the Ricci ...
