Objectives To update the incidence and prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) in Vasterbotten County, Sweden, and to compare this to previous investigations in the same area. Background Northern Sweden is a high-risk area for developing MS. Vasterbotten County has previously been surveyed in detail regarding the occurrence of MS. In several countries, increases in MS prevalence and incidence as well as a change in the sex ratio have been reported. Materials and methods Multiple sources were used to identify MS cases in Vasterbotten that either had their onset of the disease from 1998 to 2010 and/or lived in Vasterbotten, the two dates chosen for prevalence calculation: the 31st of December 2005 and 2010. Results The mean yearly incidence of MS in Vasterbotten during the entire period 1998-2010 was 6.0/100,000. The female to male ratio was 2.1. The prevalence of MS in Vasterbotten was 188/100,000 on 31st of December 2005 and 215/100,000 on 31st of December 2010. The MS prevalence increased over ...
Obesity is quite common in Swedish children, and we found that 12.9% of the five year old children were overweight and 4.3% were obese. It has been proposed that long-term breastfeeding may protect against obesity [15-19, 29, 30]. Both metabolic imprinting and behavioral aspects may potentially explain this association [31]. In Sweden, most mothers breastfeed their children [11]. In our study, 78.4% of the mothers exclusively breastfed for at least three months. The median duration of any breastfeeding was eight months. In comparison with other countries these figures are quite high [12]. The common and long-term breast-feeding duration could therefore be expected to reduce the risk of obesity in Swedish children. Thus, the aim of our study was to analyze if exclusive breastfeeding protects against obesity, when adjusting for a number of confounding factors.. Although we found a trend indication that short-term exclusive breastfeeding was in fact associated with obesity at five years of age (P = ...
Background: In epidemiology self-rated health is often measured as peoples subjective answer to a question "How is your health in general?" or "How is your general health compared to persons of your own age?". The answers have a strong association with significant medical outcomes such as death, diabetes, coronary heart disease, functional ability and depression, medical diagnoses and how these are perceived. The overarching aim of this thesis was to investigate if and how a use of the epidemiologists tool of self-rated health might aid GPs in practising medicine with a holistic perspective, contextually sensitive and taking into account the patients medical and personal histories.. Methods: In Paper I, I used semantics to elucidate the meaning of self-rated health. Data came from the Northern Sweden Monica Project 1990-1999. In Paper II, with data from the MONICA Project in 1999-2009, I used ordinal regression to investigate associations between self-rated health, medical factors, ...

Objective: To estimate the risks of non-traumatic lower extremity amputations (LEAs) in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).. Research Design and Method: We identified 31,354 patients with T1DM (15,001 women and 16,353 men) in the Swedish Inpatient Register between 1975 and 2004. The incidence of non-traumatic LEAs was followed up until December 31, 2004, by cross-linkage in the Inpatient Register and linkage to the Death and Migration registers. Poisson regression modeling was used to compare the risks of non-traumatic LEAs during different calendar periods of follow-up, with adjustment both for gender and attained age at follow-up. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) was used to estimate the relative risks with the age-, sex-, and calendar-period-matched general Swedish population as reference. The cumulative probability of non-traumatic LEAs was calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method.. Results: In total, 465 patients with T1DM underwent non-traumatic LEAs. The risk was lower during ...

We follow men and women born in nineteenth-century Northern Sweden and their descendants in contemporary Sweden. We examine absolute demographic success (number of great grandchildren), absolute socioeconomic success (number of great grandchildren with tertiary education), and average socioeconomic success (proportion of great grandchildren with tertiary education) from the perspective of our nineteenth-century cohorts. Our data comprise a population of predominantly farmers born in the Skellefteå region in Northern Sweden in the 1860s and 1870s, and we follow these lineages until 2007. We follow our lineages during the fertility transition, industrial revolution, and expansion of tertiary education. We use a prospective approach where the entire lineage is the unit of analysis and examine how the size and outcomes of future generations are structured by the eldest generations socioeconomic status, fertility, and timing of births within the lineage. Our results suggest that timing of birth, ...
The concept of ecosystem services is getting more used in planning. One important type of cultural ecosystem services is recreation, which has to be consumed where it is provided in contrast to services that can be transported to the beneficiaries. This creates a demand for users to move to the site of the service, making accessibility an important characteristic of the service. In a sustainable region the access to different services, including recreation, has to be considered in planning.. With general transit feed specification data available, storing spatial information and time tables for public transport, the possibility to create time table dependent travel time models emerge. This study utilizes a prototype tool for a geographic information system software to create a network model using time tables to calculate travel times between different origins and water related, cultural ecosystem services via the public transport network in Stockholm County, Sweden. This allows for mapping of ...
article{0e386dd1-72fc-40bc-8ebf-0fdca550c8b9, abstract = {Objectives: To investigate gender differences in daily smoking prevalence in different age groups in southern Sweden. Methods: The 2004 public-health survey in Skåne is a cross-sectional study. A total of 27,757 persons aged 18-80 years answered a postal questionnaire, which represents 59% of the random sample. A logistic regression model was used to investigate the associations between gender and daily smoking according to age. The multivariate analysis was performed to investigate the importance of possible confounders (country of origin, education, snus use, alcohol consumption, leisure-time physical activity, and BMI) on the gender differences in daily smoking in different age groups. Results: 14.9% of the men and 18.1% of the women were daily smokers. Middle-aged respondents were daily smokers to a significantly higher extent than young and old respondents. The prevalence of daily smoking also varied according to other demographic, ...

Previous studies implicated centrosomal dysfunction as a source of various neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia (SZ). Two recent reports [Gurling et al., 2006; Datta et al., 2008. Mol Psychiatry] described an association between polymorphisms in the PCM1 gene and SZ in a UK/Scottish population. In this study, we aimed to replicate these findings in a Northern Swedish association sample of 486 research subjects with SZ and 512 unrelated control individuals. We genotyped 12 previously described SNP markers and carried out haplotype analyses using the same multi-marker haplotypes previously reported. Though we could not replicate the association with SNPs rs445422 and rs208747, we did observe a significant protective association with intronic SNP rs13276297. Furthermore, we performed a meta-analysis comprising 1,794 SZ patients and 1,553 controls, which confirmed the previously reported association with rs445422 and rs208747. These data provide further evidence that PCM1-though ...

PURPOSE: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) studies in children and adolescents with disabilities tend to report lower self-reported health than in the typical population. However, reports are not always consistent and HRQoL appears to vary depending on diagnosis, cultural setting and clinical context. The aim of this study was to explore HRQoL in children and adolescents with various disabilities in Västerbotten County, Sweden.. METHODS: A total of 175 children and adolescents [57 girls, 118 boys; mean age 11.7 years (range 7-17 years)] divided into four different diagnostic groups (intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, movement disorders and hearing disabilities) participated in the study. The EuroQol Five Dimensions Health Questionnaire, Youth version (EQ-5D-Y) was used as HRQoL measure.. RESULTS: Significant differences in various EQ-5D-Y dimensions between the different diagnostic groups were found, but no differences in overall health status. HRQoL in children and ...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether childhood sociodemographic factors and parental psychopathology affect suicide risk differently in men and women. METHOD: Cox regressions were used to calculate interaction effects of gender for childhood and parental risk factors for 8815 suicides (27% women) in a national cohort of 2.47 million people born between 1946 and 1968. RESULTS: Low parental socioeconomic status increased suicide risk only for men, hazard ratio (HR) = 1.22 (P = 0.003 for gender interaction), while living in a metropolitan area increased the risk only for women, HR = 1.42 (P , 0.001 for gender interaction). Parental psychotic or affective disorder increased suicide risk more strongly for women (HR = 2.08), than for men (HR = 1.52) (P = 0.004 for gender interaction). CONCLUSION: Growing up in an urban environment and parental psychotic or affective disorder are significant gender-related risk factors for suicide, both conveying higher risks in women. The mechanisms linking childhood ...

Results The seroprevalence of Borrelia IgG antibodies was 3.2% (64/2000). Previous tick bite had been noted in 66% of these seropositive children but the majority (94%) had not previously been treated for LB. In addition, another 55 children reported a history of LB but were negative to Borrelia IgG antibodies in serum. Many of these seronegative children had received treatment for erythema migrans (n=24), which is a clinical diagnosis. Whether children were correctly treated or overtreated for LB is however unknown. No differences in gender, geographical location or reported tick bites were found when comparing Borrelia-seropositive children (n=64) and seronegative children with previous LB (n=55). ...

In the 1970s it was noted that the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) was higher in the Västerbotten area in northern Sweden than elsewhere in the country [1]. In fact, it was among the highest among men in the world [2]. Therefore, in 1985 a community-based prevention programme was initiated in the municipality of Norsjö, Västerbotten county. The program was later extended to the entire county [3]. The Västerbotten Intervention Programme (VIP), which still runs, then combined population-oriented activities, such as a food labelling system, health information meetings, cooking demonstrations, and individual-oriented activities, such as offering health examinations and counselling to inhabitants when they turned 30, 40, 50 and 60 years of age [4, 5]. Intervention on diet was a central component throughout the program. Concurrently, Västerbotten and Norrbotten, the two northern-most counties of Sweden, joined the WHO MONICA Project (Multinational Monitoring of Trends and Determinants ...

Sweden is a member state of the European Union as well as the Schengen Agreement. Many say that hitching in Sweden sucks. But it can work very well! Moreover almost everyone speaks English which will increase your chances of learning from the meetings along the way. As anywhere in Western Europe, the motorways are the holy temples of car driving religion and someone standing on them is committing blasphemy. ( I disagree, see Talk Sweden )But you can hitch on the motorway ramps as well as on local roads. Better bring a good map, though, so that you wont end up in an unexpected place. If you travel along the biggest motorway, E4, you will make faster time, but not see that much of Swedens beautiful landscapes. If your primary aim is to explore the country, you should stay away from E4. Especially in northern Sweden there are only a few main roads, which means that you might have a shorter time waiting and longer lifts. Be careful to stand somewhere where there is some sign of civilization. As ...

Context Phenomenography is a qualitative approach to research which has revolutionised the way that researchers and teachers think about the processes and outcomes of learning in higher education. Phenomenography has also been used successfully in medical and health care research for the last 20 years. Phenomenography provides a lens through which to view certain types of research question. It also provides direction for how to empirically carry out the research.. Methods This paper introduces phenomenography as a viable qualitative approach for use in medical education research.. Results A phenomenographic study maps the qualitatively different ways in which people experience a phenomenon. This type of study can have an important impact on, for example, patient communication, clinical practice and health care education.. Conclusion We suggest that a phenomenographic approach can be used to explore many medical education research issues, and can facilitate more solid links between research and ...

Our population-based Swedish cohort study, designed to detect possible effects of estrogen in the etiology of gastric cancer, revealed a reduced risk of gastric cancer among a cohort of patients with prostate cancer of whom most had received estrogen treatment.. Some methodologic aspects of our study deserve attention. Because the Swedish Cancer Register is nationwide and virtually complete since the early 1960s, we could use the entire male population of Sweden during a long period as the base for our cohort, rendering a follow-up of a substantial number of person-years at risk, which reduces the risk of bias or chance errors. Loss to follow-up is the main source of error in many large cohort studies. However, our ability to do precise record linkages to the well-functioning and continuously updated registries of causes of death and emigration vouch for a virtually complete follow-up in our study.. A potential shortcoming of our study is that information about the specific estrogen exposure of ...
HealthDay)-Poor glycemic control is associated with increased risks for stroke and death among patients with type 2 diabetes, according to a study published online Oct. 1 in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism.. Alexander Zabala, M.D., from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, and colleagues used the Swedish National Diabetes Register to compare stroke incidence among patients with type 2 diabetes. Each patient with type 2 diabetes (406,271 patients) was matched with five individual population-based controls (2,008,640 control individuals; mean age, 64 years for both).. The researchers found that during a median follow-up of 7.3 years, 6.5 percent of patients with type 2 diabetes and 4.4 percent of controls were diagnosed with a stroke. The incidence rates were 10.88 versus 7.03 events per 1,000 person-years, respectively (hazard ratio [HR], 1.54). In adjusted analysis, the risk for stroke increased with increasing glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels among patients with type 2 diabetes (hazard ...
The MISS cohort started in 1990 when 40 000 women between 26 and 65 in Skåne were randomly selected to participate in an interview about the risk factors for malignant melanoma and breast cancer. 29 508 (approximately 74%) of women surveyed chose to participate. None of the women had a history of cancer. The interviews were conducted between 1990 and 1992 and the questions concerned, among other things, the time for the womans first menstruation, number of pregnancies, age at entry into menopause, contraception, alcohol, smoking, sun exposure and constitutional factors. The cohort was interviewed one more time in year 2000 and again 2011. Re-interviews are scheduled for every ten years. During 2011 to 2013 DNA was collected from the cohort through saliva. Follow-up of morbidity and mortality are made annually through the national registry.
Objective. To assess whether antenatal health care consumption is associated with maternal body mass index (BMI). Design. A register based observational study. Methods. The Swedish Medical Birth Register, the Maternal Health Care Register, and the Inpatient Register were used to determine antenatal health care consumption according to BMI categories for primiparous women with singleton pregnancies, from 2006 to 2008, . Pairwise comparisons among BMI groups are obtained post hoc by Tukey HSD test. Result. Obese women were more often admitted for in-patient care (), had longer antenatal hospital stays (), and were more often sick-listed by an obstetrician () during their pregnancy, compared to women with normal weight women. Preeclampsia was more than four times as common, hypertension five times as common, and gestational diabetes 11 times as common when comparing in-patient care, obese to normal weight women ( for all comparisons). Underweight mothers had longer stay in hospitals () and ...

This article presents a study investigating how adolescents from Sweden and the Gambia learned music while interacting with each other in a concert project conducted in the Gambia. The main aim is to explore in what ways adolescents acquire music and to analyse it in a context of cultural identity. A sociocultural and ethnomusicological approach was employed, drawing on field studies and interviews with the adolescents. The results demonstrate that the students musical and cultural backgrounds strongly influence the ways in which they learn and how they teach others. Their cultural backgrounds also affect their choice of tools for learning and teaching. The adolescents appear to be more inclined to change their ways of teaching others than to change the methods of their own musical learning. The results suggest that teachers ought not to always use the same methods in teaching their students as they experienced when learning themselves, and that teachers need an ability to identify the learning ...
... has nearly one hundred thousand lakes. They are found throughout the country, but central Sweden in particular is a scatter zone of lakes and plains. The four largest lakes in the country are found here: Vänern, Vättern, Hjälmaren, and Mälaren. Vänern (3,593 square kilometers/1,387 square miles) and Vättern (1911 square kilometers/738 square miles) are among the four largest lakes in Europe. Vänern has an outlet to the west by way of the Göta River. It claims Swedens largest catchment area. Lake Mälaren (1,140 square kilometers/440 square miles) lies only about 0.6 meters (2 feet) above the average level of the Baltic Sea. The capital city of Stockholm is located along the strait that connects the lake to the sea. Archaeological evidence suggests that this lake and plains region was the core of early Swedish settlements. The depressions of the Norrland region are filled by lakes, most of which lie somewhat more than 305 meters (1,000 feet) above the level of the Baltic. The ...
OBJECTIVETo investigate the potential relationship between overweight, obesity, and severe obesity and the risk of hospitalization for heart failure (HF) in patients with type 1 diabetes.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODSWe studied patients with type 1 diabetes included in the Swedish National Diabetes Register during 1998-2003, and they were followed-up until hospitalization for HF, death, or 31 December 2009. Cox regression was used to estimate relative risks.RESULTSIn a sample of 20,985 type 1 diabetic patients (mean age, 38.6 years; mean BMI, 25.0 kg/m2), 635 patients were hospitalized with HF as a primary or secondary diagnosis during a median follow-up of 9.1 years. Cox regression adjusting for age, sex, diabetes duration, smoking, HbA1c, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and baseline and intercurrent comorbidities (including myocardial infarction) showed a significant relationship between BMI and hospitalization for HF (P | 0.0001). In reference to patients in the BMI 20-25 kg/m2 category, hazard

It is hypothesized that the use of the mobile phone-based self-help system FTA, and with the patients as active players, will improve diabetes self-management reflected by improved glycemic control and lipids, self-care behaviours and lifestyle changes such as improved dietary habits and increased physical activity, compared with usual care. Following this; it is also hypothesized that this will also lead to a reduction in overall risk for diabetes complications (expressed by reduction in e.g., 5 year absolute risk for coronary artery disease as calculated using the Swedish National Diabetes Registers risk calculator) and in the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome (e.g., as defined by the International Diabetes Federation). It also hypothesized that health counselling based on TTM and CBT by a diabetes nurse, and with individualized feedback via sms from the diabetes nurse, may have an important function as a supplement to the self-help system (FTA). In addition, it is hypothesized that the ...

Opioid-related deaths have increased in Western countries over recent decades. Despite numerous studies investigating opioid-related mortality, only a few have focused on the lives of the deceased individuals prior to their deaths, specifically regarding contact with care-providing authorities such as health, social and correctional services. Furthermore, a change has been noted in the last two decades as to which opioids cause most deaths, from heroin to prescription opioids. However, studies comparing fatalities caused by different substances are rare. The aim of this study was to investigate contact with care-providing authorities during the year prior to death among individuals who died as a result of opioid intoxication and to analyse differences relating to which opioids caused their deaths. The study is based on retrospective register data and includes 180 individuals with a history of illicit drug use, who died from opioid intoxication in Skåne, Sweden, between 1 January 2012 to 31 December
The incidence of heart failure (HF) is decreasing in older ages, but increasing rates have been observed among younger persons in Sweden. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between risk of hospitalization for HF and body mass index (BMI).This was a prospective registry-based cohort study. N2 - Background: Risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality for patients with versus without type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) appears to vary by the age at T2DM diagnosis, but few population studies have analyzed mortality and CVD outcomes associations across the full age range. Methods: With use of the Swedish National Diabetes Registry, everyone with T2DM registered in the Registry between 1998 and 2012 was included. Controls were randomly selected from the general population matched for age, sex, and county. The analysis cohort comprised 318 083 patients with T2DM ...
Methods. From the Swedish population-based patient register, all individuals with a diagnosis of GPA from 1964-2012 were identified (n = 3224). Through linkage with the Swedish Cancer Register, we searched for all cases of leukemia [International Classification of Diseases (ICD) 7: 204-207 and corresponding codes ICD 8-10] registered after the first discharge listing GPA. The GPA diagnosis was evaluated using the European Medical Association classification algorithm. To confirm the hematological malignancy, all diagnostic bone marrow samples were reclassified. Clinical data of both the GPA and hematological malignancy were collected from medical files. ...
The study, published in the journal Acta Oncologica, shows that the increased risk of ovarian cancer is linked to a known mutation in women with breast cancer in Western Sweden. The research team had previously identified a special mutation in the breast cancer gene BRCA1 originating with some distant forefather on Swedens West Coast many generations back. The mutation is often seen in families where three or more members develop breast and/or ovarian cancer and where someone under 50 is diagnosed with breast and/or ovarian cancer.. "Our previous research showed that Western Swedish women with breast cancer are more likely to develop ovarian cancer than women diagnosed with breast cancer in other parts of the country," says Per Karlsson, associate professor from the Department of Oncology and leader of the research team at the Cancer Genetics Clinic at Sahlgrenska University Hospital.. Most ovarian tumours are benign, especially in younger women, but more than 700 women in Sweden are diagnosed ...
Half a ton of cocaine, with a street value of hundreds of millions of kronor, was stopped at the Swedish border last year, Swedish News SVT reported on Sunday.. The most common route to Sweden is, according to police and customs staff, the Oresund Bridge, but Swedish police warn that criminal networks are also infiltrating fruit wholesalers using ports.. Some 90 percent of all fruit and vegetables shipped to the Nordic countries go through ports. Fruit and vegetable containers leaving South America for the Nordic region are used by smugglers to ship cocaine, usually without the owner of the container being aware. Instead, the smugglers rely on corrupt staff scattered throughout ports around the world.. "They are the ones who are the eyes and ears of the criminal networks at the harbor in order to be able to carry out the smuggling," Patrik Andersson, head of the police intelligence unit for southern Sweden, told SVT. Anderssons unit is working on mapping the networks.. Andersson believes ...

The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between factors in working- and family life and long-term sick listing ≥90 days in Swedish women. The hypothesis that there are associations beyond those which are strictly connected to the medical diagnosis that could be associated with long-term sick leave in Swedish women was confirmed. In this study factors connected with occupational work and own children were studied, but the underlying disease or dysfunction was not further investigated. The results provide evidence that factors in working life connected with competence and influence, industrial mobility, dissatisfaction with work tasks, mental and physical strain above capacity, are associated with long-term sick-listing.. Long-term sick listing show associations with number of children, age at birth of first child and having the main responsibility for own children. The picture of a long-term sick-listed woman could be that she had had her first child rather early, and have ...

There is increasing concern that environmental antibiotic pollution promotes transfer of resistance genes to the human microbiota. Here, fluoroquinolone-polluted river sediment, well water, irrigated farmland, and human fecal flora of local villagers within a pharmaceutical industrial region in India were analyzed for quinolone resistance (qnr) genes by quantitative PCR. Similar samples from Indian villages farther away from industrial areas, as well as fecal samples from Swedish study participants and river sediment from Sweden, were included for comparison. Fluoroquinolones were detected by MS/MS in well water and soil from all villages located within three km from industrially polluted waterways. Quinolone resistance genes were detected in 42% of well water, 7% of soil samples and in 100% and 18% of Indian and Swedish river sediments, respectively. High antibiotic concentrations in Indian sediment coincided with high abundances of qnr, whereas lower fluoroquinolone levels in well water and ...

Objectives: The aim was to explore the conceptions of working life among employees with mild-moderate aided hearing impairment (HI).. Design: This study has a descriptive design, in which data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. The text was analysed in accordance with the phenomenographic approach.. Study sample: Fifteen participants with mild-moderate aided HI were recruited to the current study.. Results: The analysis of the interviews resulted in four main categories describing the participants conceptions of working life: (1) diffiiculties in daily work, (2) communication strategies, (3) facilitating factors in work environment, and (4) impact on daily life. The four identified descriptive categories show that the effects of HI on the lives of working adults generate far-reaching psychosocial consequences for the individual.. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that difficulties and impact of having a HI ...

Evidence from this large cohort of Swedish children suggests that maternal smoking during pregnancy affects the risk of childhood leukemia in the offspring. The data are consistent with a small protective effect of smoking on risk of ALL and with an excess risk of AML. There is also some evidence that maternal smoking increases the risk of NHL, although small numbers of cases in the cohort prevent definitive conclusions. Although there is no statistical evidence of interaction, the effect of maternal smoking on ALL seems more consistent among male compared with female offspring and slightly stronger for infants during the first year of life.. In evaluating the results of the study, there are several strengths to consider. The large size and duration of follow-up provide one of the few opportunities to evaluate the research question of maternal smoking on cancer risk using a cohort design. The Swedish Medical Birth and Cancer Registers include 99% of all births and 96% of cancer cases in Sweden ...
Downloadable (with restrictions)! There is scant knowledge of the effects of country of birth on the health of individuals in the years prior to and after retirement. The aim of this study was to consider country of birth in relation to health status, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) and all-cause mortality when adjusted for socioeconomic status (SES). Cross-sectional data were collected between 1986 and 1991 on 8959 individuals between the ages of 55 and 74. Self-reported data were analysed using a logistic regression model while the mortality data were analysed by means of a proportional hazard model. In the present study, immigrants from Southern Europe, Eastern Europe and Finland carried significantly increased risks of poor health even after adjustment for SES. Southern Europeans, refugees from Developing countries and Finns exhibited an increased risk of impaired IADL compared to Swedes, even after adjustment for SES. In conclusion, country of birth was associated with poor health

Not having been at war for 200 years, there is generally little nationalistic feeling in Sweden. Self-effacement is so far developed that native Swedes now question the suitability of flying the national flag, bearing in mind that the country has over the years become home to several hundred thousand "new Swedes"-the politically correct term for refugees, asylum-seekers, and other immigrants (mostly from the Middle East). There are about 400,000 Muslims-4 percent of the population-and 20,000 Jews in Sweden.. In 2006, a non-socialist coalition government came to power led by the Conservatives and supported by the Liberals, Center Party, and Christian Democrats. The current coalition adopts a more balanced approach to the Middle East but has been unable to make a real change. For example, economic aid to the Palestinians is never conditioned on such issues as greater democracy and human rights or even a limitation on not using Swedish aid for anti-Israel incitement.. How has all this affected ...
In spite of no effect of the campaign on subjective risk of detection, some support for the possible relation between objective and subjective risk of detection may still be obtained by comparing figures across the different counties in the study. To this end, the relation between objective and subjective risk of detection (based on percentage figures for the different counties at the two time periods) was analysed; for objective risk (according to questionnaire data) the correlation was r=.86 (p=.000), and for figures according to police data the correlation was r=.74 (p=.000). In order to better understand the outcome regarding the subjective risk measure, a stepwise regression analysis was made, based on individual level data (Pedhazur, 1982). All the other factors (questions) were used as regressors in the analysis. The time factor and the area factor were included as well. A significance level of a = .05 was adopted for factors entering and leaving the model. In the analysis nine factors ...

We report herein an incidence of SCN in Sweden of 1·0 per 100 000 live births, including patients with verified disease-causing mutations and patients with probable SCN. On average one child per year in Sweden has been diagnosed with SCN. Previously, the prevalence of SCN has been estimated to 1-2 patients per million inhabitants with equal gender distribution (Zeidler et al, 2009). This estimate implies that Sweden, with a population of about 9 million inhabitants, would have 9-18 patients currently alive with SCN. In fact, our study identified 21 patients born during a period of 20 years, and of these, 18 patients are currently alive corresponding to a minimal prevalence of two patients per million inhabitants. However, the current study does not provide information on patients alive and born prior to 1987, who would have contributed to even higher prevalence figures.. The present study was not designed to determine the incidence of all known SCN mutations. Notwithstanding, we can report the ...

The main aim of this study was to assess the agreement of questionnaire data with data reported to the Register from health care personnel during routine consultations. Patient data were obtained by sending a questionnaire with 27 of the 41 Register variables to 3714 members of the Norwegian Diabetes Association. Questionnaire data were compared with data already in the Register. Paired t-tests, percentages of total agreement, percentages of

In this large, population-based CD-screening study we found that CD-associated symptoms and conditions are as common among screening-detected CD cases as among non-CD children when reported before knowledge of their CD status. We also found that there is no difference in CD prevalence among symptomatic and asymptomatic children, and that CD case-finding conducted by asking for CD-associated symptoms and conditions had a poor diagnostic accuracy in a general Swedish population of 12-year-olds.. This study has several strengths. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of a hypothetical case-finding strategy with prospective collection of questionnaire data and CD serological marker testing of all children in the study population, allowing for evaluation of the diagnostic performance of a questionnaire-based approach as a first step in finding CD in a general pediatric population. A limitation of the study is that the questionnaires were constructed specifically for this study and ...
