Objectives To update the incidence and prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) in Vasterbotten County, Sweden, and to compare this to previous investigations in the same area. Background Northern Sweden is a high-risk area for developing MS. Vasterbotten County has previously been surveyed in detail regarding the occurrence of MS. In several countries, increases in MS prevalence and incidence as well as a change in the sex ratio have been reported. Materials and methods Multiple sources were used to identify MS cases in Vasterbotten that either had their onset of the disease from 1998 to 2010 and/or lived in Vasterbotten, the two dates chosen for prevalence calculation: the 31st of December 2005 and 2010. Results The mean yearly incidence of MS in Vasterbotten during the entire period 1998-2010 was 6.0/100,000. The female to male ratio was 2.1. The prevalence of MS in Vasterbotten was 188/100,000 on 31st of December 2005 and 215/100,000 on 31st of December 2010. The MS prevalence increased over ...
Many festivals around the world have signed the gender equality pledge, but Swedens Goteborg Film Festival has become the first to promise that its next edition will programme 50% of its films from female directors. This marks the first time a major international film festival will hit that target.. The programme for the 43rd Goteborg Film Festival (Jan 24 - Feb 3, 2020) will feature 200 films directed by men and 200 by women. The festival calls this initiative 50/50 Vision.. Jonas Holmberg, Artistic Director, Goteborg Film Festival, told Screen: We have talked about gender parity for a long time, but change is happening too slowly. Now, we have decided to stop talking and do something concrete at the upcoming Goteborg Film Festival. By promising to present a program with 50% female directors, we want to inspire both reflection and action. During the ongoing programming work we are actively scouting films directed by women, but the most interesting process this decision has provoked is the ...
Obesity is quite common in Swedish children, and we found that 12.9% of the five year old children were overweight and 4.3% were obese. It has been proposed that long-term breastfeeding may protect against obesity [15-19, 29, 30]. Both metabolic imprinting and behavioral aspects may potentially explain this association [31]. In Sweden, most mothers breastfeed their children [11]. In our study, 78.4% of the mothers exclusively breastfed for at least three months. The median duration of any breastfeeding was eight months. In comparison with other countries these figures are quite high [12]. The common and long-term breast-feeding duration could therefore be expected to reduce the risk of obesity in Swedish children. Thus, the aim of our study was to analyze if exclusive breastfeeding protects against obesity, when adjusting for a number of confounding factors.. Although we found a trend indication that short-term exclusive breastfeeding was in fact associated with obesity at five years of age (P = ...

Background: In epidemiology self-rated health is often measured as peoples subjective answer to a question How is your health in general? or How is your general health compared to persons of your own age?. The answers have a strong association with significant medical outcomes such as death, diabetes, coronary heart disease, functional ability and depression, medical diagnoses and how these are perceived. The overarching aim of this thesis was to investigate if and how a use of the epidemiologists tool of self-rated health might aid GPs in practising medicine with a holistic perspective, contextually sensitive and taking into account the patients medical and personal histories.. Methods: In Paper I, I used semantics to elucidate the meaning of self-rated health. Data came from the Northern Sweden Monica Project 1990-1999. In Paper II, with data from the MONICA Project in 1999-2009, I used ordinal regression to investigate associations between self-rated health, medical factors, ...

The present study reports for the first time on the experience of infliximab in the clinical setting of IBD in a strictly population based cohort. The study comprised all IBD patients treated in Stockholm County between 1999 and 2001. This enabled us to assess infliximab therapy in an epidemiological context with regard to severe adverse events, including postoperative complications, serious infections, malignancies, and deaths. In our clinical experience with infliximab in an unselected IBD population, we encountered more severe adverse events than expected from earlier reports.18-20 A total of six deaths were seen; all of those patients had received a single dose (5 mg/kg) of infliximab. The annual mortality rate among IBD patients in Stockholm County has been historically low, with a standardised mortality ratio of 1.51 for CD and 1.37 for UC.21 Two of the fatalities occurred postoperatively, giving a mortality rate of 4.9%, which is higher than that previously reported from St Marks ...

Objective: To estimate the risks of non-traumatic lower extremity amputations (LEAs) in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).. Research Design and Method: We identified 31,354 patients with T1DM (15,001 women and 16,353 men) in the Swedish Inpatient Register between 1975 and 2004. The incidence of non-traumatic LEAs was followed up until December 31, 2004, by cross-linkage in the Inpatient Register and linkage to the Death and Migration registers. Poisson regression modeling was used to compare the risks of non-traumatic LEAs during different calendar periods of follow-up, with adjustment both for gender and attained age at follow-up. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) was used to estimate the relative risks with the age-, sex-, and calendar-period-matched general Swedish population as reference. The cumulative probability of non-traumatic LEAs was calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method.. Results: In total, 465 patients with T1DM underwent non-traumatic LEAs. The risk was lower during ...

We follow men and women born in nineteenth-century Northern Sweden and their descendants in contemporary Sweden. We examine absolute demographic success (number of great grandchildren), absolute socioeconomic success (number of great grandchildren with tertiary education), and average socioeconomic success (proportion of great grandchildren with tertiary education) from the perspective of our nineteenth-century cohorts. Our data comprise a population of predominantly farmers born in the Skellefteå region in Northern Sweden in the 1860s and 1870s, and we follow these lineages until 2007. We follow our lineages during the fertility transition, industrial revolution, and expansion of tertiary education. We use a prospective approach where the entire lineage is the unit of analysis and examine how the size and outcomes of future generations are structured by the eldest generations socioeconomic status, fertility, and timing of births within the lineage. Our results suggest that timing of birth, ...
The concept of ecosystem services is getting more used in planning. One important type of cultural ecosystem services is recreation, which has to be consumed where it is provided in contrast to services that can be transported to the beneficiaries. This creates a demand for users to move to the site of the service, making accessibility an important characteristic of the service. In a sustainable region the access to different services, including recreation, has to be considered in planning.. With general transit feed specification data available, storing spatial information and time tables for public transport, the possibility to create time table dependent travel time models emerge. This study utilizes a prototype tool for a geographic information system software to create a network model using time tables to calculate travel times between different origins and water related, cultural ecosystem services via the public transport network in Stockholm County, Sweden. This allows for mapping of ...
article{0e386dd1-72fc-40bc-8ebf-0fdca550c8b9, abstract = {Objectives: To investigate gender differences in daily smoking prevalence in different age groups in southern Sweden. Methods: The 2004 public-health survey in Skåne is a cross-sectional study. A total of 27,757 persons aged 18-80 years answered a postal questionnaire, which represents 59% of the random sample. A logistic regression model was used to investigate the associations between gender and daily smoking according to age. The multivariate analysis was performed to investigate the importance of possible confounders (country of origin, education, snus use, alcohol consumption, leisure-time physical activity, and BMI) on the gender differences in daily smoking in different age groups. Results: 14.9% of the men and 18.1% of the women were daily smokers. Middle-aged respondents were daily smokers to a significantly higher extent than young and old respondents. The prevalence of daily smoking also varied according to other demographic, ...

Previous studies implicated centrosomal dysfunction as a source of various neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia (SZ). Two recent reports [Gurling et al., 2006; Datta et al., 2008. Mol Psychiatry] described an association between polymorphisms in the PCM1 gene and SZ in a UK/Scottish population. In this study, we aimed to replicate these findings in a Northern Swedish association sample of 486 research subjects with SZ and 512 unrelated control individuals. We genotyped 12 previously described SNP markers and carried out haplotype analyses using the same multi-marker haplotypes previously reported. Though we could not replicate the association with SNPs rs445422 and rs208747, we did observe a significant protective association with intronic SNP rs13276297. Furthermore, we performed a meta-analysis comprising 1,794 SZ patients and 1,553 controls, which confirmed the previously reported association with rs445422 and rs208747. These data provide further evidence that PCM1-though ...

PURPOSE: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) studies in children and adolescents with disabilities tend to report lower self-reported health than in the typical population. However, reports are not always consistent and HRQoL appears to vary depending on diagnosis, cultural setting and clinical context. The aim of this study was to explore HRQoL in children and adolescents with various disabilities in Västerbotten County, Sweden.. METHODS: A total of 175 children and adolescents [57 girls, 118 boys; mean age 11.7 years (range 7-17 years)] divided into four different diagnostic groups (intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, movement disorders and hearing disabilities) participated in the study. The EuroQol Five Dimensions Health Questionnaire, Youth version (EQ-5D-Y) was used as HRQoL measure.. RESULTS: Significant differences in various EQ-5D-Y dimensions between the different diagnostic groups were found, but no differences in overall health status. HRQoL in children and ...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether childhood sociodemographic factors and parental psychopathology affect suicide risk differently in men and women. METHOD: Cox regressions were used to calculate interaction effects of gender for childhood and parental risk factors for 8815 suicides (27% women) in a national cohort of 2.47 million people born between 1946 and 1968. RESULTS: Low parental socioeconomic status increased suicide risk only for men, hazard ratio (HR) = 1.22 (P = 0.003 for gender interaction), while living in a metropolitan area increased the risk only for women, HR = 1.42 (P , 0.001 for gender interaction). Parental psychotic or affective disorder increased suicide risk more strongly for women (HR = 2.08), than for men (HR = 1.52) (P = 0.004 for gender interaction). CONCLUSION: Growing up in an urban environment and parental psychotic or affective disorder are significant gender-related risk factors for suicide, both conveying higher risks in women. The mechanisms linking childhood ...

Results The seroprevalence of Borrelia IgG antibodies was 3.2% (64/2000). Previous tick bite had been noted in 66% of these seropositive children but the majority (94%) had not previously been treated for LB. In addition, another 55 children reported a history of LB but were negative to Borrelia IgG antibodies in serum. Many of these seronegative children had received treatment for erythema migrans (n=24), which is a clinical diagnosis. Whether children were correctly treated or overtreated for LB is however unknown. No differences in gender, geographical location or reported tick bites were found when comparing Borrelia-seropositive children (n=64) and seronegative children with previous LB (n=55). ...

Prevalence of swallowing dysfunction screened in Swedish cohort of COPD patients Margareta Gonzalez Lindh,1,2 Monica Blom Johansson,1 Margareta Jennische,1 Hirsh Koyi2,3 1Department of Neuroscience, Speech and Language Pathology, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden; 2Centre for Research and Development (CFUG), Uppsala University, County Council of Gävleborg, Gävle, Sweden; 3Department of Respiratory Medicine, Gävle Hospital, Gävle, Sweden Background: COPD is a common problem associated with morbidity and mortality. COPD may also affect the dynamics and coordination of functions such as swallowing. A misdirected swallow may, in turn, result in the bolus entering the airway. A growing body of evidence suggests that a subgroup of people with COPD is prone to oropharyngeal dysphagia. The aim of this study was to evaluate swallowing dysfunction in patients with stable COPD and to determine the relation between signs and symptoms of swallowing dysfunction and lung function (forced

BACKGROUND: Both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and tuberculosis (TB) primarily affect the lungs and are major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. COPD and TB have common risk factors such as smoking, low socioeconomic status and dysregulation of host defence functions. COPD is a prevalent co-morbid condition, especially in elderly with TB but in contrast to other diseases known to increase the risk of TB, relatively little is known about the specific relationship and impact from COPD on TB-incidence and mortality.. METHODS AND FINDINGS: All individuals , or = 40 years of age, discharged with a diagnosis of COPD from Swedish hospitals 1987-2003 were identified in the Swedish Inpatient Register (n = 115,867). Records were linked to the Swedish Tuberculosis Register 1989-2007 and the relative risk of active TB in patients with COPD compared to control subjects randomly selected from the general population (matched for sex, year of birth and county of residence) was estimated ...
In the 1970s it was noted that the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) was higher in the Västerbotten area in northern Sweden than elsewhere in the country [1]. In fact, it was among the highest among men in the world [2]. Therefore, in 1985 a community-based prevention programme was initiated in the municipality of Norsjö, Västerbotten county. The program was later extended to the entire county [3]. The Västerbotten Intervention Programme (VIP), which still runs, then combined population-oriented activities, such as a food labelling system, health information meetings, cooking demonstrations, and individual-oriented activities, such as offering health examinations and counselling to inhabitants when they turned 30, 40, 50 and 60 years of age [4, 5]. Intervention on diet was a central component throughout the program. Concurrently, Västerbotten and Norrbotten, the two northern-most counties of Sweden, joined the WHO MONICA Project (Multinational Monitoring of Trends and Determinants ...

The need for a mobile workforce inevitably means that the length of the total work day (working and traveling time) will increase, but the health effects of commuting have been surprisingly little studied apart from perceived stress and the benefits of physically active commuting. We used data from two cross-sectional population-based public health surveys performed in 2004 and 2008 in Scania, Sweden (56% response rate). The final study population was 21, 088 persons aged 18-65, working | 30 h/week. Duration (one-way) and mode of commuting were reported. The outcomes studied were perceived poor sleep quality, everyday stress, low vitality, mental health, self-reported health, and absence from work due to sickness during the past 12 months. Covariates indicating socioeconomic status and family situation, overtime, job strain and urban/rural residency were included in multivariate analyses. Subjects walking or cycling to work | 30 min were used as a reference category. Monotonous relations were found

Sweden is a member state of the European Union as well as the Schengen Agreement. Many say that hitching in Sweden sucks. But it can work very well! Moreover almost everyone speaks English which will increase your chances of learning from the meetings along the way. As anywhere in Western Europe, the motorways are the holy temples of car driving religion and someone standing on them is committing blasphemy. ( I disagree, see Talk Sweden )But you can hitch on the motorway ramps as well as on local roads. Better bring a good map, though, so that you wont end up in an unexpected place. If you travel along the biggest motorway, E4, you will make faster time, but not see that much of Swedens beautiful landscapes. If your primary aim is to explore the country, you should stay away from E4. Especially in northern Sweden there are only a few main roads, which means that you might have a shorter time waiting and longer lifts. Be careful to stand somewhere where there is some sign of civilization. As ...
For example, the number of deaths as a share of total cases is a useless statistic, since countries have completely different testing regimes. It is at best an indication of a countrys testing capacity and how many people with more mild cases are being tested-an area where Sweden has not impressed.. Those who want to show how great Sweden is doing have produced charts comparing us to countries like Britain, Belgium, France, Spain, and Italy. Those who want to prove the opposite replace those countries with Norway, Denmark, and Finland, all of which have fewer deaths.. If you want Sweden to look bad, compare it to the U.S. as a whole-120 deaths per million in Sweden vs. 94 in the U.S. according to Our World in Datas April 16 numbers. If you want Sweden to look good, compare it to New York state, which is at a more similar stage to us in the viruss spread-120 vs. 580.. The truth is that Sweden is somewhere in the European middle when it comes to deaths per capita, which in itself is ...
