TY - JOUR. T1 - Study to determine clinical decision thresholds in small animal veterinary practice. AU - Guevara, Natalie Toulme. AU - Hofmeister, Erik. AU - Ebell, Mark H.. AU - Locatelli, Isabella. PY - 2019/8/10. Y1 - 2019/8/10. N2 - This study aimed to determine clinical decision thresholds for six common conditions in small animal veterinary practice. Participants were provided with an online survey. Five questions described scenarios of canine patients with suspected panosteitis, hypothyroidism, urinary tract infection (UTI), mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction (GIO) and idiopathic epilepsy, and one question described a feline patient with suspected chronic kidney disease. A range of probabilities was applied to each scenario. Test and treatment threshold levels were computed for each scenario from 297 usable responses. The test and treatment thresholds were determined for UTI (test=12.8 per cent; 95 per centCI=1.1 to 20.7; treatment=82.0per cent; 95 per centCI=66.3 to 100) and GIO ...
To investigate how first opinion small animal veterinary surgeons in the UK handled chemotherapeutic agents, a questionnaire was distributed at the 2014 British Small Animal Veterinary Association congress and by internet. Chemotherapy was regularly offered by 70.4 per cent of the respondents. Gold standards defined according to available guidelines for safe handling of antineoplastic drugs were poorly followed by general practitioners with only 2 per cent of respondents complying with all of them. Dedicated facilities for preparation and administration of cytotoxic drugs were variably available among participants. The level of training of staff indirectly involved in handling chemotherapy was appropriate in less than 50 per cent of practices. No association was found between demographic characteristics of the sampled population and the decision to perform chemotherapy. The results of this study raise concerns about the safety of the veterinary staff in first opinion practices involved in ...

If you find a bite wound on your cat it should be bathed with a salt solution (1 tablespoon of salt in a pint of water) and the wound watched closely for signs of swelling over the next few days. Sometimes the first indication that your cat has an abscess is when the swelling bursts, releasing foul smelling, creamy white or green pus. If the abscess doesnt burst naturally your vet will lance it, flush out the remaining pus and then wash it with an antiseptic solution.. Your cat will probably be put on a course of antibiotics lasting between three and seven days. There are many different types of antibiotic that kill different types of bacteria. Your vet will use his experience to select the right antibiotic for the job. If the wound is still infected after a few days tests may be necessary to find which particular bacteria are present and help your vet choose an alternative antibiotic. ...

How will I know that my pet is having difficulty breathing?. It may well be obvious to you that your pet is struggling to breathe because you are used to seeing them breathing normally and will notice a change. In many cases there is an increase in both the rate and effort of breathing but one or other may occur. You may notice for example that there is more movement of their chest and tummy area or that there is flaring of the nostrils. Some of the most severely affected animals show postural adaptations to help them move air (e.g. sitting upright rather than lying down, standing with their elbows out). In very severe cases, the gums may take on a bluish or purplish appearance rather than their normal salmon pink colour. This is referred to as cyanosis and should prompt immediate veterinary attention.. What will my vet do to help my pet?. Your vet may want to approach the management of your pet in a slow and steady fashion, taking their time to do the various necessary tests and treatments ...
It is normally quite straightforward to recognise that there is something wrong with your pets eyes. In most diseases that affect the eye the eye will look sore or there will be excessive discharge. If your pet has a reddened or runny eye, is blinking a lot or pawing at its face then an early trip to the vet is advisable. Cats that have suffered from cat flu as kittens may be left with permanently runny eyes and some infectious diseases can also cause conjunctivitis in cats.. Eye problems can be caused by a foreign body in the eye - often a grass seed or piece of dirt; a scratch on the eye caused by another cats claw or running into a twig, or a simple eye infection. To work out what is wrong with the eye your vet will need to examine it carefully. Any foreign material in the eye can be removed and it is likely that your pet will need some eye drops or cream for a few days afterwards.. Blindness is not commonly recognised in pets and if your pet is only blind in one eye they may compensate ...
Your vet will first want to examine your cat and by feeling the bladder and other organs they may be able to get a good idea of what is going on. Tests on a urine sample will show if there is anything wrong with the urine such as excess sugar, protein or crystals in the urine. If there is a problem then a urine sample may be sent to a laboratory to see if bacteria can be grown (cultured). If bacteria do grow there are tests that can be done to find the right antibiotics to clear up the infection. If the problem keeps coming back or fails to clear up properly, your vet may advise that the bladder is examined using X-rays or ultrasound. If your pet has signs of general illness, such as fever or poor appetite, more general tests including blood tests are likely to be carried out ...
Your vet will then want to perform a thorough clinical examination. Ideally, the information you provide and the results of your vets examination will give diagnostic clues as to which direction in which to look first. If these findings make one particular cause of collapse more likely than others then this gives a far better chance of determining the cause. A problem arises where signs are vague and do not allow us to home in on a particular group of possibilities. In these circumstances unfortunately investigation needs to be very broad-based and we would start by evaluating for the most common causes of collapse.. How is collapse investigated?. There is no single test that will evaluate the patient for all causes of collapse. Tests are picked on an individual basis according to how valuable the clinician expects the test to be in a particular case. This is why the intial information and history is so important because it will help the clinician to be more specific with the tests ...
The importance of organizations for understanding differences in the working conditions and health of employees is often emphasized but rarely explored empirically. The general aim of this thesis is to describe organizational characteristics of workplaces, and to assess their impact on the psychosocial working conditions and health of employees. In modern working life, it is assumed that employees working conditions and health are affected by a general transformation of workplaces from bureaucracy to post-bureaucracy.. The organizational data used are based on structured interviews with managers at workplaces in different types of operations in mid-Sweden, whereas the individual data consist of a questionnaire to all employees working in the participating workplaces, resulting in a dataset of 90 workplaces and 4306 individuals. Descriptive analysis was carried out for comparison of organizational characteristics in different types of operations, while multilevel analysis was applied to ...
Problems with the urinary tract in cats can cause excessive urine production or an urge to urinate frequently.. If your cat has cystitis often the first sign you will notice is that it is passing small amounts of urine very often. Sometimes you will see blood in the urine and occasionally your cat will strain as if trying to go to the toilet but nothing comes out. In these cases cystitis may be mistaken for constipation or an obstruction in the urinary tract. A blockage in the urinary tract is more common in male cats than females. Obstruction to the urinary tract is an emergency situation so if you think your cat is straining to pee then you should contact your vet immediately.. Cats may also choose not to use a litter tray and spray or urinate in other parts of the house. This may be due to a medical problem but in many cases can be a behavioural response to stressful situations. In multicat households cats may avoid using a litter tray frequented by other cats and most cats will avoid a dirty ...

There is no NHS for pets, and Veterinary medicine has become increasingly sophisticated over the past few years. On a daily basis we see the decisions our clients face regarding the treatment of their animals. To offer you peace of mind in knowing that you will never have to compromise on the level of veterinary care for your pet, we strongly recommend that you insure your pet against accident and illness.. We are not allowed to advise you about which insurance company or particular policy to choose (or avoid). However, we would suggest you consider Lifetime Cover or Maximum Benefit Cover. A good point to note is that the price difference between some providers is not significant and a little increase in your budget when taking a policy out may prove to be extremely prudent in the event of a claim.. Important! - Medical insurance, differs from other types of insurance.
