CHICAGO (February 19, 2020) --Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Illinois EPA announced their proposal to formally redesignate the Pekin area to attainment of the most recent federal air quality standard for sulfur dioxide. Recent air monitoring data show that air concentrations of sulfur dioxide in the area are now below the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for sulfur dioxide, in addition to all other federal air quality standards set to protect public health. EPAs partnership with the State of Illinois has resulted in cleaner, healthier air in the Pekin area which is home to more than 40,000 people, said EPA Region 5 Administrator Kurt Thiede In addition to cleaner air, once Pekin is redesignated, local businesses will face fewer air permitting restrictions, paving the way for the infrastructure investment and economic development that help create jobs. Continuing southeastern winds will exist through most of the day, causing much of the contamination to exist elsewhere on the Big Island. This study examined the effects of three pH levels (2.90, 3.20, 3.80), three sulfur dioxide levels (25, 50, 75 ppm free SO2), three storage temperatures (20°C, 30°C, 40°C), and three storage times (0, 3, 9 months). A higher pH resulted in a loss of color intensity and redness and increased browning during storage for nine months. Wine with lower pH had a greater loss of free, unpolymerized anthocyanins, which indicated greater polymerization in lower pH wine. Fifty-eight accuracy audits were conducted in 2001. All but three of these audits were within the 10% full-scale analyzer response error considered acceptable by the APCD..
