AU - Chen, Chung Ying. AU - Chen, Lin. AU - Teng, Po Ren. PY - 2007/6. Y1 - 2007/6. N2 - Objective: To investigate the impact of media reporting of a celebrity suicide on subsequent suicide attempts. Method: A Poisson time series autoregression analysis was conducted to examine whether there was a significant increase in suicide attempts during the 3-week period after the start of extensive media reporting of a celebrity suicide. The reporting began on May 2, 2005, and lasted about 17 days. To investigate the influence of media reporting on suicide attempts, a structured interview was conducted with 124 suicide attempters identified from 2 counties in Mid Taiwan who had exposure to the media reporting. Results: After controlling for seasonal variation, calendar year, temperature, and humidity, there was a marked ...
Attempts to reduce suicide in a population do not always focus enough on high-risk patients, argues an Essay in PLoS Medicine this week that discusses different interventions for secondary suicide prevention.. Whilst primary suicide prevention aims to reduce the number of new cases of suicide in the population and tertiary prevention attempts to diminish clusters of suicides in an area (suicide contagion), secondary suicide prevention aims to decrease the likelihood of suicide attempts in particularly high risk patients. These include people with psychiatric illnesses, which is associated with 90% of all suicides. Leo Sher of Columbia University and colleagues discuss the growing research field that aims to help prevent suicide in these patients most at risk. Suicide poses a major threat to public health worldwide, accounting for 877,000 deaths worldwide in 2002.. Outlining both the clinical evaluations and biological markers of suicide, the authors argue that physicians need to be taught ...
BACKGROUND: Older adults have elevated suicide rates. Self-harm is the most important risk factor for suicide. There are few population-based studies of self-harm in older adults. AIMS: To calculate self-harm rates, risk factors for repetition and rates of suicide following self-harm in adults aged 60 years and over. METHOD: We studied a prospective, population-based self-harm cohort presenting to six general hospitals in three cities in England during 2000 to 2007. RESULTS: In total 1177 older adults presented with self-harm and 12.8% repeated self-harm within 12 months. Independent risk factors for repetition were previous self-harm, previous psychiatric treatment and age 60-74 years. Following self-harm, 1.5% died by suicide within 12 months. The risk of suicide was 67 times that of older adults in the general population. Men aged 75 years and above had the highest suicide rates. CONCLUSIONS: Older adults presenting to hospital with self-harm are a high-risk group for subsequent suicide, particularly
As expected, on average, younger individuals, have significantly lower suicide mortality than their older peers. For all methods, except firearms, younger age is associated with significantly lower suicide mortality independent of gender. Although the protective effect of younger age is less pronounced for more lethal methods, it remains significant even among those who used the second most lethal suicide method-suffocation. However, the considerable protective effect of youth vanishes among firearm users; for both males and females, suicide mortality is remarkably uniform across all age categories of firearm users.. For all methods except firearms, younger age protects against mortality regardless of suicide method and gender-our proxies for intention die. It seems that robust health and other characteristics of younger individuals lower suicide mortality independent of their intention to die. However, whatever protection younger age confers, firearms negate. It is unlikely that this lack of an ...
BACKGROUND Hungary previously had one of the highest suicide rates in the world, but experienced major social and economic changes from 1990 onwards. We aimed to investigate the antecedents of suicide in Hungary. We hypothesised that suicide in Hungary would be associated with both risk factors for suicide as identified in Western studies, and experiences related to social and economic restructuring. METHODS We carried out a controlled psychological autopsy study. Informants for 194 cases (suicide deaths in Budapest and Pest County 2002-2004) and 194 controls were interviewed by clinicians using a detailed schedule. RESULTS Many of the demographic and clinical risk factors associated with suicide in other settings were also associated with suicide in Hungary; for example, being unmarried or having no current relationship, lack of other social contacts, low educational attainment, history of self-harm, current diagnosis of affective disorder (including bipolar disorder) or personality disorder, and
Background: Mental health related hospitalizations and suicide are both significant public health problems within the United States Department of Defense (DoD). There are limited evidence-based suicide prevention interventions that have been developed for military personnel and veterans who are experiencing suicide ideation or who have made a suicide attempt.. Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of the Safety Planning for Military (SAFE MIL) on suicide ideation, suicide-related coping, and attitudes toward help seeking for hospitalized military personnel at high suicide risk.. Methodology: To test the efficacy of the adapted intervention, the investigators will randomize 186 patients to one of two conditions: Safety Planning for Military (SAFE MIL) or Enhanced Usual Care (E-CARE). The SAFE MIL condition (intervention) will consist of the Safety Planning Intervention to help the suicidal individual with a collaboratively generated personal plan to mitigate or prevent a future suicidal crisis. ...
High-risk strategies would only have a modest effect on suicide prevention within a population. It is best to incorporate both high-risk and population-based strategies to prevent suicide. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of suicide prevention between high-risk and population-based strategies. A Markov chain illness and death model is proposed to determine suicide dynamic in a population and examine its effectiveness for reducing the number of suicides by modifying certain parameters of the model. Assuming a population with replacement, the suicide risk of the population was estimated by determining the final state of the Markov model. The model shows that targeting the whole population for suicide prevention is more effective than reducing risk in the high-risk tail of the distribution of psychological distress (i.e. the mentally ill). The results of this model reinforce the essence of the Rose theorem that lowering the suicidal risk in the population at large may be more effective than
Throughout the holiday season, we hear from friends, family and others in the community about how stressful it must be working at a crisis prevention agency during this time of year. They ask how it is to hear from people who are sad and may be thinking about suicide. Suicide rates remain fairly stable throughout the year, and it is a myth that rates increase significantly during the November-December holidays. A 2017 article by the Annenberg Foundation stated that nearly 66 percent of the newspaper stories linking the holidays and suicide over the 2016-17 holiday season supported a false connection. According to new information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2015 November and December were the two lowest months (12th and 11th, respectively) in average suicide deaths per day, and January was ninth. The article also noted that May, July and March (in this order) had the highest daily average suicide rates.. Even though statistics can drive suicide prevention efforts, it ...
This work constitutes a macro-sociological study of suicide. The empirical focus is on suicide mortality in Russia, which is among the highest in the world and has, moreover, developed in a dramatic manner over the second half of the 20th century. Suicide mortality in contemporary Russia is here placed within the context of development over a longer time period through empirical studies on 1) the general and sex- and age-specific developments in suicide over the period 1870-2007, 2) underlying dynamics of Russian suicide mortality 1956-2005 pertaining to differences between age groups, time periods, and particular generations and 3) the continuity in the aggregate-level relationship between heavy alcohol consumption and suicide mortality from late Tsarist period to post-World War II Russia. In addition, a fourth study explores an alternative to Émile Durkheims dominating macro-sociological perspective on suicide by making use of Niklas Luhmanns theory of social systems. With the help of ...

A South Australian suicide prevention committee is at risk of being axed by the Rann Government, Liberal MLC Michelle Lensink said today.. In evidence given to the Mental Health Select Committee, Dr Paul Lehmann of Mt Barker told the committee that the Rann Government planned to scrap the Ministerial Advisory Council on the Prevention of Suicide and Deliberate Self Harm.. The council aims to prevent suicide among young people, particularly those living in regional South Australia.. This is yet another example of the Rann Governments neglect of the needs of country people, Ms Lensink said.. Each year more than 160 South Australians take their own lives - more than the total number of people killed on the States roads in 2004 (139).. This council plays a pivotal role in youth suicide prevention and the development of strategies to identify and reach people at risk.. Unfortunately, it is being neglected because its a country program, and doesnt achieve the media headlines with which the ...
Data on recommended care for young people aged 15-19 years after attempted suicide from nine European research centres during the period 1989-1992 were analysed in terms of gender, history of previous suicide attempt and methods used. Altogether 438 suicide attempts made by 353 boys and 1,102 suicide attempts made by 941 girls were included. Analyses of the total data from all centres showed that young people with a history of previous suicide attempt and those using violent methods had significantly higher chance of being recommended aftercare than first-time attempters or those choosing self-poisoning. There were no significant differences of being recommended care between genders. Logistic regression analyses of the material were performed and the results were similar. Both having previous attempted suicide (odds ratio 2.0, 95% CI 1.53-2.61) and using hard methods (odds ratio 1.71, 95% CI 1.49-1.96) were significantly associated with increased possibility of being recommended aftercare. Correlations were computed to examine relationships between suicide rates in 15-24-year-old males and females and per capita consumption of beer, wine, and spirits in the general population in 34 European countries. There was a negative correlation between suicide rates in 15-24-year-old males and per capita consumption of wine. There was also a trend towards a negative correlation between suicide rates in 15-24-year-old females and per capita consumption of wine. No correlations between suicide rates in 15-24-year-olds and per capita consumption of beer or spirits were found. In the whole population (all ages), suicide rates in males were negatively correlated with consumption of wine and positively correlated with consumption of spirits. As expected, suicide rates in males were significantly higher than in females. It is possible that the observed relationship is a result of a third factor affecting both suicide rates in 15-24-year-olds and consumption of wine.. Reference. 1. Sher L. Relation ...

2 young people in Gloucestershire are raising funds for a suicide prevention charity after losing 2 friends to suicide - and doing it via a skydive despite both of them being absolutely terrified of heights.. Charlie Waplington and Elise Gardiner were hit hard by the tragic loss of friends Arro and Ed and wanted to take on a challenge to honour their memory. The girls are undertaking a skydive - determined to overcome their fear of heights - and the duo have decided to use the opportunity to raise funds for suicide prevention charity Papyrus Prevention of Young Suicide.. Suicide is the biggest killer of people under 35 in the UK, yet few people know anything about suicide prevention. It is often only when it touches you personally that people recognise the risk to young people and the impact a suicide can have on family, friends and loved ones.. Elise explains:. This is a charity very close to our hearts as we have both been affected by the loss of our 2 dear friends, Ed and Arro.. We believe ...
Aminu explained that there was no need for anyone who had tasted the good side of life in the past, and because of the difficult economic situation in the country to contemplate suicide.. He urged this class of people to be optimistic for better tomorrow as efforts were ongoing to get the nation out of the economic recession.. The don, however, expressed disappointment at the daring rate of suicide cases in the country.. He identified poverty and frustration as the main causes for the increasing cases of suicide in the country.. According to him, suicide is a catastrophe which occurs with untold hardship and stigma in a society to unfortunate victims.. The global suicide rate is 16 per 100,000 population and on average, one person dies by suicide every 40 seconds somewhere in the world, he said.. He stated that 1.8 per cent of worldwide deaths were suicides, adding that global suicide rates had increased by 60 per cent in the past 45 years.. Aminu said that the World Health Organisation ...
Women who take hormonal contraceptives such as birth control pills, the patch, the ring and hormonal IUDs can face up to three times the risk of suicide as women who never took hormonal birth control, and younger women face the gravest danger, a new study says.. Researchers in Denmark who conducted the study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry looked at associations between hormonal contraceptive use and suicide attempt and suicide in a sample of women from across Denmark who had no psychiatric diagnoses, antidepressant use, or hormonal contraceptive use before age 15 and who turned 15 during the study period from 1996 through 2013.. Nationwide registers were then used to collect data on use of hormonal contraception, suicide attempt, suicide, and other potential variables.. Use of hormonal contraception was positively associated with subsequent suicide attempt and suicide. Adolescent women experienced the highest relative risk, the researchers concluded.. The study showed that ...

Suicide rates increase during the life course and are as high as 48.7/100,000 among older white men in the USA. Specific health conditions and stress factors increase the complexity of the explanatory model for suicide in older adults. Am J Psychiatry 2011 Oct;168(10):1050-6.. OBJECTIVE: Bipolar disorder is associated with high risk for suicidal acts. Observational studies suggest a protective effect of lithium against suicidal behavior. However, testing this effect in randomized clinical trials is logistically and ethically challenging. The authors tested the hypothesis that lithium offers bipolar patients with a history of suicide attempt greater protection against suicidal behavior compared to valproate. METHOD: Patients with bipolar disorder and past suicide attempts (N=98) were randomly assigned to treatment with lithium or valproate, plus adjunctive medications as indicated, in a double-blind 2.5-year trial. An intent-to-treat analysis was performed using the log-rank test for survival data. Two models were fitted: time to suicide attempt and time to suicide event (attempt or hospitalization or change in medication in response to suicide plans).RESULTS: There were 45 suicide events in 35 participants, including 18 ...

Washington, DC) -- U.S. Senators John McCain (R-AZ) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) today reintroduced The Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans (SAV) Act, bipartisan legislation that would improve mental health care and suicide prevention resources for American service members. The bill, which passed the House of Representatives yesterday, will now proceed to the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs for consideration.. It is unacceptable that an estimated 22 American veterans commit suicide every day, said Senator McCain. This bill would consolidate and improve existing mental health programs, provide new incentives to attract more psychiatrists to treat veterans through the VA, and enhance resources for transitioning veterans, especially combat veterans. Our nation has a long way to go to decrease the rate of suicide among our returning service members, but this bill is an important step toward improving the care we provide to the men and women who have sacrificed for all of ...
Rates of suicide appear to be increasing, indicating a critical need for more effective prevention initiatives. To increase the efficacy of future prevention initiatives, we examined the spatial distribution of suicide deaths and suicide attempts in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, to identify where high incidence suicide clusters were occurring. Such clusters represent candidate regions where intervention is critically needed, and likely to have the greatest impact, thus providing an evidence-base for the targeted prioritisation of resources. Analysis is based on official suicide mortality statistics for NSW, provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and hospital separations for non-fatal intentional self-harm, provided through the NSW Health Admitted Patient Data Collection at a Statistical Area 2 (SA2) geography. Geographical Information System (GIS) techniques were applied to detect suicide clusters occurring between 2005 and 2013 (aggregated), for persons aged over 5 years. The final

Later, Khan et al (2003 in American Journal of Psychiatry) examined the rates of suicides in SSRIs, active comparators, and placebo and found a relative risk of 1.4 (95% CI .56-3.62) in favor of greater suicide on SSRIs and, when including all antidpressants found a RR of 1.62 (95% CI .66-4.02). Lets keep in mind that the above issues with the coadministration of benzos applied in many of these studies, as well as some studies (though its unclear how many) counting suicides on placebo washout (when all participants were receiving placebo - nobody was taking antidepressants) as placebo suicides, which biases the data in favor of drugs appearing safe. See links on inappropriately attributing suicide/suicidality to placebo here and here. So even with the deck stacked in favor of showing drug safety, there is still an enhanced suicide/suicidality risk associated with antidepressants compared to placebo. Curious, eh? Perhaps if the deck was not stacked, this difference would have actually achieved ...
The aim of the study was to ascertain suicide seasonality in the Greek population and to associate this seasonal variation with age, sex, and suicide method. Studying seasonality can be of help in establishing a public health policy, related with suicide prevention. This is an epidemiologic study based on forensic evidence. We studied the deaths caused by self-injury (trauma), namely deaths by violent suicide (not self-poisoning). Statistically significant suicide seasonality was established with a peak in May. This seasonal variation is attributed mainly to males. As for the method, suicide by hanging peaks in June and by shooting in April. It was also observed that seasonality for individuals above the age of 45 peaks in early May.. ...

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people ages 10-19 in the U.S., and rates of youth suicide and self-injury hospitalization are on the rise, especially among younger adolescents (1, 2). A 2017 survey estimated that more than 1 in 6 high school students nationwide seriously considered suicide in the previous year, a figure nearly 20% higher than findings from a decade earlier (3). Between 2007 and 2015, suicide rates rose 130% for U.S. children ages 10-14 and 46% for youth ages 15-19 (2). Similar to suicide trends, from 2001 to 2015 self-injury hospitalization rates increased by more than 130% for ages 10-14 and by 47% for ages 15-19 (2). While self-inflicted injuries typically are not the result of suicide attempts and do not involve intent to die, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a risk factor for suicide (4). Data from a 2015 national survey show that in the previous year 18% of high school students had engaged in NSSI at least once, and 6% had engaged in NSSI six or ...

BACKGROUND: To assess the prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of suicide involving acute alcohol intoxication among U.S. ethnic minorities. METHODS: Data were derived from the restricted 2003 to 2009 National Violent Death Reporting System. The study focused on the sociodemographic and toxicological information of 59,384 male and female suicide decedents for 16 states of the United States. Acute alcohol intoxication was defined as having a blood alcohol content (BAC) ,/=0.08 g/dl. Overall, 76% of decedents were tested for the presence of alcohol. RESULTS: The proportion of suicide decedents with a positive BAC ranged from 47% among American Indians/Alaska Natives (AIs/ANs) to 23% among Asians/Pacific Islanders (PIs). Average BAC was highest among AIs/ANs. Among those who were tested for BAC, the proportion of decedents legally intoxicated prior to suicide was as follows: Blacks, 15%; AIs/ANs, 36%; Asians/PIs, 13%; and Hispanics, 28%. Bivariate associations showed that most suicide ...

Executive Summary. Over the past 20 years, a growing body of research has focused on suicidality among transgender individuals, including prevalence estimates and risk factors associated with suicide thoughts and attempts. Studies of the transgender population demonstrate that the prevalence of suicide thoughts and attempts among transgender adults is significantly higher than that of the U.S. general population. For example, transgender adults have a prevalence of past-year suicide ideation that is nearly twelve times higher, and a prevalence of past-year suicide attempts that is about eighteen times higher, than the U.S. general population. The 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey (USTS), which is the largest survey of transgender people in the U.S. to date, found that 81.7 percent of respondents reported ever seriously thinking about suicide in their lifetimes, while 48.3 percent had done so in the past year. In regard to suicide attempts, 40.4 percent reported attempting suicide at some point in ...
SEATTLE-August 25, 2009-Researchers working with Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans have found that post-traumatic stress disorder, the current most common mental disorder among veterans returning from service in the Middle East, is associated with an increased risk for thoughts of suicide.. Results of the study indicated that veterans who screened positive for PTSD were four times more likely to report suicide-related thoughts relative to veterans without the disorder. The research, published in the Journal of Traumatic Stress, establishes PTSD as a risk factor for thoughts of suicide in Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans. This holds true, even after accounting for other psychiatric disorder diagnoses, such as substance abuse and depression. Veterans who screened positive for PTSD and two or more comorbid mental disorders were significantly more likely to experience thoughts of suicide relative to veterans with PTSD alone.. As many as forty-six percent of veterans in the study experienced ...
The National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) collects data on violent deaths, i.e., suicides, homicides and legal intervention, including terrorism-related incidents. The system also includes some other types of deaths, namely deaths due to undetermined intent and unintentional deaths due to firearms. One of the main reasons for including these types of deaths is that there is overlap in how these deaths are coded. For example, a particular poisoning case may be classified as an undetermined death in one state, but in a neighboring state, the same case may be coded as a suicide or an unintentional poisoning. NVDRS is an incident-based system that collects data from different data sources, including death certificates, coroner and medical examiner records, police reports, crime lab data, and child fatality review records. The system collects data on a violent incident, the deaths belonging to that incident, the injury mechanisms leading to death, and the alleged perpetrators (suspects) ...
Findings show that American Indians are at much greater risk than other ethnic groups.. In 2009, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide ranked as the 10th leading overall cause of death in the United States. Prior research has also shown that alcohol use disorders confer increased risk for suicide, and are second only to mood disorders as common among individuals who have committed suicide. A study of the prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of suicide involving acute alcohol intoxication among U.S. ethnic minorities has found that American Indians are at much greater risk than other groups.. Results will be published in the May 2013 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research and are currently available at Early View.. I do not think that most people in the U.S. are aware that suicide is ranked as the 10th leading cause of death, said Raul Caetano, regional dean (Dallas) and professor of epidemiology at The University of Texas School of Public ...
To test the hypothesis that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants may have a suicide emergent effect, particularly in children and adolescents. Detections of different antidepressants in the forensic toxicological screening of 14 857 suicides were compared with those in 26 422 cases of deaths by accident or natural causes in Sweden 1992-2000. There were 3411 detections of antidepressants in the suicides and 1538 in the controls. SSRIs had lower odds ratios than the other antidepressants. In the 52 suicides under 15 years, no SSRIs were detected. In 15-19-year age group, SSRIs had lower relative risk in suicides compared with non-SSRIs. The hypothesis that treatment of depressed individuals with SSRIs leads to an increased risk of suicide was not supported by this analysis of the total suicidal outcome of the nationwide use of SSRIs in Sweden over a period of 9 years, either in adults or in children or adolescents.. ...
By definition, people who commit suicide are responsible for their own death, but other people and entities my be involved. Proving liability in a suicide can be complicated, but it is possible. Liability can arise in the school setting under certain circumstances.. A child suicide lawyer will take into consideration physical and emotional harm to determine whether your claim is worth litigating. For instance, if your child sustained a broken bone when others ganged up on him and caused serious emotional suffering for both the child and the parents over a prolonged time, a lawsuit may prevent incidents like this from ever happening again.. If your child attempted or committed suicide that could have been prevented, you may want to contact child injury lawyer Jeffrey Killino.. It is not gloom and darkness but sunlight which drives people to kill themselves, according to new research. A study of suicides in Greenland has found that suicide rates increase sharply in summer, worsening with increased northerly latitude and round-the-clock daylight.. The counter-intuitive findings are reported in a paper by Karin Sparring Björkstén from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, co-authored with Danish researcher Peter Bjerregaard and Californian Daniel Kripke.. The three academics studied suicides in Greenland from 1968-2002, during which period there were apparently 1351 suicides and 308 homicides. The researchers compared suicide rates with homicides and also with local beer consumption, to see if there were any correlations. It could have been, for instance, that Greenlanders would drink more beer in the summertime and being boozed-up would lead them to top themselves - not the mere fact that it was summer.. But this wasnt the case. The study reports peaks in June and ...
This study examines suicide perceptions of police officers from two groups, east coast officers and west coast officers. To investigate this problem, the researcher conducted a quantitative analysis utilizing a previously validated instrument. Participants of this study voluntarily completed the Suicide Attitude Questionnaire (SUIATT), administered by the National Police Suicide Foundation. The participants consisted of 75 sworn officers from each group varying in age, education, experience, and job description. This study also examined various leadership styles and makes recommendations for leaders to improve upon or implement police suicide prevention training. Risks factors and warning signs were identified by participating officers, which may assist supervisors in identifying potential officers at risk.

The timeline for a copycat suicide is generally weeks and months, though in the case of a high-profile celebrity suicide, it might be as long as one year. Some of the most famous suicides that have caused a spike in the overall suicide rate include Marilyn Monroe (that August had about 200 suicides more than was typical for the month) and the Tunisians street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi, whose self-immolation kicked off the Arab Spring. The Netflix series 13 Reasons Why saw a 26-percent increase in searches for how to commit suicide, an 18-percent increase in searches for commit suicide and a 9-percent increase in searches for how to kill yourself. The teen suicide rate itself spiked after the release of the show.. The Werther Effect for mass shootings was found to be 13 weeks by the study conducted by Arizona State University and Northeastern Illinois University.. For his part, Phillips mostly blamed the media. He believed that people who were having a hard time felt that in some way they had ...

Funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), and in collaboration with colleagues from the Universities of Manchester and Oxford, the researchers from the School of Social and Community Medicine used national mortality statistics, inquest reports of people dying by suicide and interviews with people affected by the recession, including 19 who had made suicide attempts, to understand the ways in which the recession affected mental health and suicide.. David Gunnell, professor of epidemiology at the University of Bristol said: Prior to the recession, rates of suicide in the UK were declining. Around the time of the recession, this decline reversed, and similar patterns were seen in other European countries and in North America. The greatest rise in the incidence of suicide appeared to be in young men.. OBJECTIVE: Depressive episodes are common in bipolar disorder, and the disorder is characterized by high suicide rates. Recent analyses indicate a possible association of antidepressant treatment and suicidality in children and adults with depressive or anxiety disorders. However, few data are available to inform the suicidality risk assessment of antidepressant use specifically in bipolar disorder. METHOD: Of the first 2000 participants followed for 18 months in the Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder (STEP-BD), 425 experienced a prospectively observed, new-onset major depressive episode without initial suicidal ideation. Standardized ratings of suicidality and antidepressant exposure at index depressive episode and next evaluation were used to investigate the primary hypothesis that new-onset suicidality was associated with increased antidepressant exposure (antidepressant initiation or dose increase). Secondary analysis investigated correlates of new-onset suicidality and
About 479,000 people are hospitalized each year from intentional self-injuries, with about one-tenth of suicide attempts ending in death. The majority of successful suicides involve firearms, followed by suffocations and poisonings.. SALT LAKE CITY September 14, 2016 - Attorney General Sean D. Reyes released the following statement on National Suicide Prevention Month:. Over the past two years, the Office of the Attorney General has teamed with legislators, state agencies, mental health clinicians, suicide prevention advocates, the faith community, educators, law enforcement, parents and teens to combat the leading cause of death of Utah children, ages 10-17. We can no longer accept the horrible reality that our kids are not only contemplating leaving this life, but actually succeeding in their determination to end it themselves. The shocking tragedy of suicide permeates our state and our children are finding it to be a solution to loneliness, depression, discrimination, anxiety and the devastating pain caused by bullying, harassment, and abuse.. As I have visited with youth throughout the state over the past two and a half years individually and in groups, I have asked how many of them feel alone, judged, alienated or ...

Suicides incur in all public transit systems which do not completely impede access to tracks. We conducted two studies to determine if we can reliably identify in stations people at risk of suicide in order to intervene in a timely manner. The first study analysed all CCTV recordings of suicide attempters in Montreal underground stations over 2 years to identify behaviours indicating suicide risk. The second study verified the potential of using those behaviours to discriminate attempters from other passengers in real time. First study: Trained observers watched CCTV video recordings of 60 attempters, with 2-3 independent observers coding seven easily observable behaviours and five behaviours requiring interpretation (e.g.
People with bipolar disorder are sometimes treated with antiepileptic drugs but there have been worries that these can increase peoples suicide risk. Researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago studied 47,918 people with bipolar disorder, 13,385 of whom were taking antiepileptics. They found that those taking the antiepileptic drugs had similar rates of suicide attempts as those taking lithium or those people who were taking no medication at all. In fact after people started taking the antiepileptic drugs they had a significantly lower rate of suicide attempts than before they had started taking them. Relative to taking no medication at all taking antiepileptic medication led to a fivefold decrease in risk ...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between the availability of paracetamol and its use for overdose and suicide. DESIGN: Analysis of routinely collected information on time trends for paracetamol suicides, non-fatal overdoses, and sales. SETTING: England and Wales and France. RESULTS: There were strong correlations between trends in paracetamol sales in the UK and trends in non-fatal paracetamol overdose in Oxford between 1976 and 1993 (Spearmans r = 0.86; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.54, 0.96) and between paracetamol sales and non-fatal overdoses in France between 1974 and 1990 (r = 0.99; 95% CI 0.97, 1.00). Sales figures were also correlated with paracetamol related suicides in both England and Wales, 1983-91 (r = 0.72; 95% CI 0.11, 0.94) and France, 1974-90 (r = 0.79; 95% CI 0.50, 0.92). Similarly strong relationships were observed between trends in non-fatal overdoses and suicide by paracetamol poisoning in England and Wales (r = 0.85; 95% CI 0.61, 0.95) and France (r = 0.79; 95% ...
Chemical suicides can pose a great danger to responders and bystanders because a cloud of toxic gas may remain at the scene (confined space), waiting to be released as a door or window is opened. The materials used in the suicide may continue to off-gas for an extended period of time after initial generation, and toxic gases may remain in the victims lungs, clothing, or in the confined space. These gases are lethal at low concentrations and often cant be easily detected. If a chemical suicide is suspected, first responders should follow local response guidelines, take precautions, and wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). The event should be treated as:. ...
Even though asylum seekers are considered vulnerable to mental ill-health, knowledge of their suicidal behaviour is limited. The aim of this study was to improve our understanding of factors that influence the clinical assessment of asylum seekers who have attempted suicide compared to the assessment of non-asylum seekers. The study focused on 88 asylum seekers registered for suicide attempts in mental health services 2005-2009, who were matched for age and gender and compared with 88 suicide attempters with Swedish personal identity numbers. The medical records were analysed with a quantitative protocol, focusing on social risk and protective factors, health history, current clinical picture as well as the assessment procedure, diagnostics, patterns of treatment and follow-up in this clinical group. Data was analysed using the chi-square test, Fishers exact probability test, and the Mann-Whitney U test. As in earlier studies, asylum seekers were more traumatized, had different social risk factors and

Design: A longitudinal prospective study comparing bereavement by suicide to other types of sudden deaths over time (6, 12 and 24 months). Setting: Queensland, Australia. Participants: 25 suicide-bereaved and 15 sudden-death-bereaved persons. Outcome measures: Grief reactions (measured with the Grief Experience Questionnaire). Results: The response rate was 52.1% in the suicide bereaved and 45.5% in the sudden-death group. There was a small number of dropouts, with the retention rate over 85% for both groups. Linear ...
Suicide is a difficult subject for many people to talk about or try and face, said Shanay Scott, chairperson of the Mental Health Awareness Committee and organiser of the free screening event.. LONDON: Al-Qaida is laying deadly booby traps by equipping its female suicide bombers with explosive breast implants that are impossible to be detected at airport security checkpoints, British intelligence agency MI5 has claimed.Women suicide bombers recruited by al-Qaida are known to have had the explosives inserted in their breasts under techniques similar to breast enhancing surgery, the British newspaper Sun quoted terrorist expert Joseph Farah, as saying.. The lethal explosives called PETN are inserted inside plastic shapes during the operation, before the breast is then sewn up, he added.. According to the MI5, al-Qaida doctors have been trained at some of Britains leading teaching hospitals before returning to their own countries to perform the surgical procedures.. The intelligence agency has also discovered that extremists are inserting the explosives into the buttocks of some male suicide bombers.. Top surgeons have confirmed the feasibility of the explosive implants.. Properly ...

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, prisoners are at high risk of suicide. Reducing the number of suicides in jails and prisons is an international priority. Several risk factors for suicide attempts, such as historical, prison-related, psychosocial and clinical factors, have been found in prisoners. We assessed whether demographic, conviction-related and neuro-behavioral variables might be associated with current suicide risk and lifetime suicide attempts in two large central Italy prisons. METHODS: On a preliminary sample of 254 detainees within an ongoing project, we assessed whether demographic, conviction-related, psychiatric, cognitive variables and illness comorbidity might be associated with current suicide risk and lifetime suicide attempts in two large central Italy prisons ...

The US Food and Drug Administration body (FDA) requires all antidepressants, including venlafaxine, to carry a black box warning with a generic warning about a possible suicide risk. A 2014 meta analysis of 21 clinical trials of venlafaxine for the treatment of depression in adults found that compared to placebo, venlafaxine reduced the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior.[21]. A study conducted in Finland followed more than 15,000 patients for 3.4 years. Venlafaxine increased suicide risk by 60% (statistically significant), as compared to no treatment. At the same time, fluoxetine (Prozac) halved the suicide risk.[22]. In another study, the data on more than 200,000 cases were obtained from the UK general practice research database. At baseline, patients prescribed venlafaxine had a greater number of risk factors for suicide (such as prior suicide attempts) than patients treated with other anti-depressants. The patients taking venlafaxine had significantly higher risk of completed suicide ...
Objective: This was to determine the prevalence of suicidal behaviours prior to and during the first year of treatment in a comprehensive early psychosis program (EPP) and to identify predictors of suicidal behaviour.. Method: In a cohort study of 238 subjects, patients were assessed at initial presentation to an EPP and 1 year later. Measures included a range of demographic variables, suicide attempts, depression, positive and negative symptoms, social functioning and substance misuse.. Results: Although 15.1% attempted suicide prior to program entry, only 2.9% made an attempt in the year after program entry and 0.4% completed suicide. No further attempts were seen in those with previous parasuicide. These rates are lower than other published rates for first-episode patients.. Conclusion: It is possible that specifically designed first-episode programs can reduce the suicidal behaviour in this high-risk population. The low prevalence of attempted suicide makes modeling predictors difficult. ...

Different kinds of windows.. *********. Other voters comments included:. Given the devastating statistics of male suicide this is one of those poems that pushes through the poetry landscape as a signpost to show people where suicide takes those left behind. It is so personal and brave that it takes the breath away but comforts, disturbs and educates like poetry should. It is a timeless poem like Frieda Hughes poem also about her brother Nicholas suicide. Beautiful. A painfully, beautiful and brave poem. Im voting not for the subject matter alone, but for the quality of the poem, which is up to the task.. An honest, brave poem that tackles a very difficult subject.
