OBJECTIVE: The Internet contains an extraordinary amount of information on the recreational use of psychoactive substances. We investigated the effect of the Internet on the drug-use knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of adolescents. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of adolescents being managed for substance abuse. RESULTS: Of 12 patients (9 male, 3 female) who had used the Internet to learn about psychoactive substances, 100% reported that Internet-based information had affected the ways in which they had used psychoactive substances. Of the 12 respondents, 8 described adopting behaviors intended to minimize the risks associated with psychoactive substance use. Respondents also reported changes in the use of a wide variety of illicit substances as well as over-the-counter and prescription pharmaceuticals. Recent studies have shown that efforts to curb alcohol use by increasing the price of alcohol and limiting youths access have succeeded, but they may have had the unintended consequencce of increasing marijuana use. This possibility is troubling in light of a recent government report that shows that marijuana use among teens more than doubled between 1990 and 1997. What impact will the proposed large increase in cigarette prices have on the demand for other substances such as marijuana? To better understand how the demand for marijuana responds to changes in the policies and prices that affect its use, we explore the National Household Survy on Drug Abuse (NHSDA). While the intersection between drug and alcohol use and unprotected sex is well recognized, few studies have examined the relationship between substance use patterns and unprotected sex among high risk-populations such as street-involved youth. Data were derived from the At-Risk Youth Study (ARYS), a prospective cohort of street-involved youth from Vancouver, Canada. Pathological and problem gambling refer to a class of disorders, including those meeting criteria for a psychiatric diagnosis, and others comprising a spectrum of severity defined by significant personal and social harm, that may be common in substance use treatment but are frequently unrecognised. This paper presents a systematic review and meta-analysis of available evidence indicating the prevalence of such gambling disorders in substance use treatment. It provides the best available estimates from studies of clinical samples of substance users, and suggests around 14% of patients that demonstrate comorbid pathological gambling. Around 23% suffer conditions along the broader spectrum of problem gambling. The review also highlights important limitations of existing evidence, including scant data on current versus lifetime comorbidity, as well as reliance on convenience samples and self-administered measures of gambling problems. The aim of this study was to summarise the scientific evidence on the prevalence of psychoactive substance use and on the factors associated with their intake among truck drivers. The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship between recent and long term substance use on adolescents neuropsychological functioning. Subjects were 77 adolescents who were referred for outpatient treatment for drug and conduct problems. Subjects were administered the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery-III, structured interviews to assess substance use, and urine tests. Subjects were divided into neuropsychologically impaired and nonimpaired groups. Results indicated no significant group differences for: self-reports of lifetime use of alcohol, cannabis, and hard drugs; self or collateral reports of recent (past 30 days) use of alcohol, cannabis, and hard drugs; or urinalysis detection of alcohol, cannabis, and hard drugs. Two years ago, the National Institutes of Healths Scientific Management Review Board (SMRB) issued a report recommending that NIH move to establish a new institute focused on substance use, abuse, and addiction-related research to optimize NIH research in these areas. ADHD is common in substance use disorder patients in general and cannabis use disorder (CUD) in particular, occurring at rates substantially greater than in the general population. A meta-analysis found that approximately 23% of substance abusers seeking treatment have childhood and/or adult ADHD. Moreover, ADHD was overrepresented in adults with CUD compared to other substance use disorder patients seeking treatment.
