Objective: To evaluate the impact of concurrent treatments for substance use disorder and nicotine-dependence for stimulant-dependent patients.. Method: A randomized, 10-week trial with follow-up at 3 and 6 months after smoking quit date conducted at 12 substance use disorder treatment programs between February 2010 and July 2012. Adults meeting DSM-IV-TR criteria for cocaine and/or methamphetamine dependence and interested in quitting smoking were randomized to treatment as usual (n = 271) or treatment as usual with smoking-cessation treatment (n = 267). All participants received treatment as usual for substance use disorder treatment. Participants assigned to treatment as usual with concurrent smoking-cessation treatment received weekly individual smoking cessation counseling and extended-release bupropion (300 mg/d) during weeks 1-10. During post-quit treatment (weeks 4-10), participants assigned to treatment as usual with smoking-cessation treatment received a nicotine inhaler and ...

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders includes a chapter on substance-related and addictive disorders. Subcategories include substance use disorder and addictive disorders. Substance use disorder encompasses both substance abuse and substance dependence and is subsequently categorized by the specific type of substance being used (e.g. alcohol use disorder). Substance abuse is the repeated use of high quantities of any substance that leads to physical and mental problems. Commonly abused substances include alcohol, nicotine, and illegal drugs. Legally obtained medication also makes up a large part of substance abuse. Anti-anxiety medication like Xanax®, for example, is popular among addicts while also being one of the easiest legal medications to receive. In the United States alone over 27 million people have misused a substance at any given time in the past 30 days. It is most common in teenagers and adults in their twenties, with the majority of dependent users starting ...

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) series (formerly titled National Household Survey on Drug Abuse) primarily measures the prevalence and correlates of drug use in the United States. The surveys are designed to provide quarterly, as well as annual, estimates. Information is provided on the use of illicit drugs, alcohol, and tobacco among members of United States households aged 12 and older. Questions included age at first use as well as lifetime, annual, and past-month usage for the following drug classes: marijuana, cocaine (and crack), hallucinogens, heroin, inhalants, alcohol, tobacco, and nonmedical use of prescription drugs, including pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives. The survey covered substance abuse treatment history and perceived need for treatment, and included questions from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders that allow diagnostic criteria to be applied. The survey included questions concerning treatment for both ...
Assessing Adolescent Substance Abuse Intervention Programs in South Texas. by Pam Wilson An Applied Research Project (Political Science 5397) Submitted to the Department of Political Science Texas State
Of the approximately 1.65 million adolescents (≤18 years) who are arrested in the United States each year,1 about 20 percent (330,000), are placed in short-term detention centers or long-term prison facilities.2 These detained adolescents (DAs) represent an especially vulnerable population, with prominent mental health problems and treatment needs.3,-,7 In fact, epidemiological studies of the DA population indicate that 40 to 55 percent of DAs meet the criteria for a disruptive behavior disorder (e.g., conduct disorder or oppositional defiant disorder),5,8 60 to 70 percent meet the criteria for a nonbehavioral mental disorder (e.g., anxiety disorder or major depressive disorder),5,9,-,11 and 45 to 50 percent meet the criteria for a substance-related disorder (e.g., alcohol use disorder or cannabis-related disorder),5,12,13 whereas only 10 to 20 percent of adolescents in the general population have a mental disorder.6,14. The high rates of mental and substance-related disorders among DAs are ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Substance use stigma. T2 - Reliability and validity of a theory-based scale for substance-using populations. AU - Smith, Laramie R.. AU - Earnshaw, Valerie A.. AU - Copenhaver, Michael M.. AU - Cunningham, Chinazo O.. PY - 2016/5/1. Y1 - 2016/5/1. N2 - Background: Substance use disorders consistently rank among the most stigmatized conditions worldwide. Thus, substance use stigma fosters health inequities among persons with substance use disorders and remains a key barrier to successful screening and treatment efforts. Current efforts to measure substance use stigma are limited. This study aims to advance measurement efforts by drawing on stigma theory to develop and evaluate the Substance Use Stigma Mechanisms Scale (SU-SMS). The SU-SMS was designed to capture enacted, anticipated, and internalized Substance Use Stigma Mechanisms among persons with current and past substance use disorders, and distinguish between key stigma sources most likely to impact this target population. ...
Objectives:The aims of this study were to estimate the frequency and course of substances use disorders in Latino patients with schizophrenia and to ascertain risk factors associated with substance use disorders in this population. Method: We studied 518 subjects with schizophrenia recruited for a genetic study from the Southwest United States, Mexico, and Central America (Costa Rica and Guatemala). Subjects were assessed using structured interviews and a best estimate consensus process. Logistic regression, χ 2 , ttest, Fishers exact test, and Yates correction, as appropriate, were performed to assess the sociodemographic variables associated with dual diagnosis. We defined substance use disorder as either alcohol or substance abuse or dependence. Results: Out of 518 patients with schizophrenia, 121 (23.4%) had substance use disorders. Comorbid substance use disorders were associated with male gender, residence in the United States, immigration of Mexican men to the United States, history of ...

Substance abuse programs provide a new start, and just as with any new start, they can be quite scary. For those looking for NJ Behavior Health programs focused on substance abuse, the comfort of knowing what they can expect can really mean a lot. While enrolled in a substance abuse program, you can expect to be a little uncomfortable, you can expect to be challenged, but most of all, you can expect to come out on the other side as a person who knows more about themselves and with the tools to regain control of your life.. One of the first emotions you can expect to feel when participating in a substance abuse program is irritation or anger. As your body is going through re-learning how to live without substances, its likely to be on edge during the adjustment process, and this can cause you to lash out or feel very uncomfortable with even the smallest annoyance. Its important to remember, however, that this is a natural process, and working through it can only help to better develop coping ...

Co-occurring Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders: A Guide to Diagnosis and Treatment provides a clinically detailed, evidence-based, and exhaustive examination of a topic rarely plumbed in psychiatry texts, despite the fact that co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorders are common. The authors argue for a more holistic and integrated approach, calling for clinicians to tactfully but persistently evaluate patients for a broad range of co-occurring disorders before determining appropriate treatment. Focusing on a substance use disorder in isolation, without determining whether another psychiatric disorder is co-occurring, can doom treatment efforts, and the reverse also is true. To help clinicians keep the big picture in mind, the book is organized around 18 cases, each of which addresses a particular diagnostic skill (e.g., assessment), group of disorders commonly comorbid with substance use disorders (e.g., PTSD, eating disorders), specific treatment (e.g., pharmacological ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Adolescent stressors, psychopathology, and young adult substance dependence. T2 - A prospective study. AU - King, Kevin M.. AU - Chassin, Laurie. PY - 2008/9. Y1 - 2008/9. N2 - Objective: There is much theory, but sparse empirical evidence, supporting the notion that internalizing symptoms and negative affect are the mechanism by which exposure to stressful life events influence the development of substance-use disorders in adolescence and young adulthood. However, many empirical studies have shown that, in addition to elevations in internalizing symptoms, exposure to stressful life events also produces elevations in externalizing behaviors and conduct problems, which are important risk factors for substance-use disorders. The current study tested adolescent externalizing and internalizing symptoms as competitive mediators of the effects of stressors on young adult drug dependence. Method: Data from an ongoing study of children of alcoholics (n = 223) and matched controls (n = ...
Background Prenatal substance use screening is recommended. The 4 Ps Plus screener includes questions on perceived problematic substance use in parents and partner that are not considered in risk stratification. Objectives This research examined the: (1) prevalence of self-reported problematic parental and partner substance use and associations with biochemically-verified prenatal substance use; (2) utility of self-reported perceptions of parent/partner substance use as proxies for prenatal substance use; and (3) degree to which the sensitivity of the 4Ps Plus can be augmented with consideration of parent/partner questions in risk stratification. Methods A convenience sample of 500 pregnant women was recruited between January 2017 and January 2018. Participants completed the 4Ps Plus and provided urine for drug testing. Diagnostic utility of problematic parent/partner substance use questions was assessed, then compared to the 4Ps Plus used as designed, and to the 4Ps Plus used with these 2 ...

In other words, the MHPA and MHPAEA created a parity-if-offered system where insurers were not required to offer insurance coverage for mental illness and substance use disorder treatment, but they were required to offer it at parity with medical and surgical benefits if they did. The ACA increased this standard to full parity - insurers were required to offer coverage for mental illness and substance use disorder treatment and this coverage had to be comparable to coverage for other medical and surgical coverage.. So… does the Graham-Cassidy bill cover mental health services?. The Graham-Cassidy bill is essentially a parity-if-offered bill. In other words, if states choose to include mental health care services treatment and/or substance use treatment services as an essential benefit, there has to be parity in coverage compared to other medical and surgical coverage. The bill therefore reverts to pre-ACA legislation and it will require insurers to cover mental health and substance use ...

The problem of alcohol and substance abuse is a growing concern among the general public, military personnel, and veterans. Impacts of this abuse are both personal and societal, and include reduced levels of readiness, mental health problems, increased crime, sexual assaults and suicides. In addition, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and other psychological health problems are strongly linked to alcohol and substance abuse disorders. The Alcohol and Substance Abuse Disorders Program (ASADRP) was established in fiscal year 2010. Since its inception, the program has established a network of research teams with the explicit goal of accelerating the delivery of new or improved treatments, especially related to PTSD and TBI.. The programs approach is to organize multidisciplinary, team-based translational research efforts to expedite the process of identifying promising beneficial compounds by conducting human proof-of-principle clinical trials. If successful, this ...
What motivates someone to change is complex, particularly when it comes to addictive behaviors. Substance abuse programs in the U.S. reflect the disparity evident in the health care system as a whole-while Whites are twice as likely to report substance abuse problems as Blacks, Black clients are two times less likely to complete substance abuse treatment programs.. Race and referral sources. In an effort to investigate this paradox, a team of University of Iowa researchers, including Marizen Ramirez, associate professor of occupational and environmental health in the College of Public Health, considered how referral source might affect completion of treatment among racial groups. They found that Black clients were most likely to successfully complete treatment when referred by an employer, while for White clients, criminal justice referrals such as court orders were associated with the highest percentage of program completion.. The study, which was published online April 18, 2015, in the journal ...

OBJECTIVE: The Internet contains an extraordinary amount of information on the recreational use of psychoactive substances. We investigated the effect of the Internet on the drug-use knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of adolescents. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of adolescents being managed for substance abuse. RESULTS: Of 12 patients (9 male, 3 female) who had used the Internet to learn about psychoactive substances, 100% reported that Internet-based information had affected the ways in which they had used psychoactive substances. Of the 12 respondents, 8 described adopting behaviors intended to minimize the risks associated with psychoactive substance use. Respondents also reported changes in the use of a wide variety of illicit substances as well as over-the-counter and prescription pharmaceuticals. Examiners assessed whether quotations demonstrated that respondents knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors toward psychoactive substance use were affected by Internet information. Despite the subjective

Recent studies have shown that efforts to curb alcohol use by increasing the price of alcohol and limiting youths access have succeeded, but they may have had the unintended consequencce of increasing marijuana use. This possibility is troubling in light of a recent government report that shows that marijuana use among teens more than doubled between 1990 and 1997. What impact will the proposed large increase in cigarette prices have on the demand for other substances such as marijuana? To better understand how the demand for marijuana responds to changes in the policies and prices that affect its use, we explore the National Household Survy on Drug Abuse (NHSDA). Overall, we find that marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco are complements, sot that increasing the price of any one will decrease the demand for marijuana. The results of this paper will help guide the creation of comprehensive policies that curb the use of marijuana in two ways: first, they quantify the effects of policies aimed at ...
Rates of sexually transmitted infections (STI) and unplanned pregnancy are high among youth. While the intersection between drug and alcohol use and unprotected sex is well recognized, few studies have examined the relationship between substance use patterns and unprotected sex among high risk-populations such as street-involved youth. Data were derived from the At-Risk Youth Study (ARYS), a prospective cohort of street-involved youth from Vancouver, Canada. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to examine substance use patterns that were independently associated with unprotected sex, defined as (vaginal or anal) sexual intercourse without consistent condom use. Between September 2005 and May 2013, 1,026 youth were recruited into the ARYS cohort and 75% (n = 766) reported engaging in recent unprotected sex at some point during the study period. In a multivariable analysis, female gender (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.46, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.18-1.81), Caucasian ancestry ...

Substance use is common among people living with HIV and is associated with less successful HIV treatment outcomes. Integrating substance use services into HIV care is a promising strategy to improve patient outcomes and reduce HIV incidence. To determine the availability of substance use-related education, screening, and referrals in HIV treatment centers across the globe, investigators examined two surveys of HIV care and treatment sites participating in the International epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS (IeDEA) Consortium.
Psychoactive substance use disorder can be defined as a chronic illness with an uncontrollable impulsivity to drug use by affecting reward, motivation, memory and decision making mechanisms in individuals brains. These substances can cause dangerous consequences in the lives of individuals by causing addiction and, on the other hand, by stimulating or depressing the central nervous system, causing mood, mental state, behavioral and motor function disorders. Caffeine, hallucinogens, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), inhalants, nicotine, phencyclidine, sedatives, hypnotics, anxiolytics, anabolic steroids, nitrous oxide are among the addictive substances (1 ,2). The incidence of psychiatric disorders in patients with substance use disorders is 2.7 times higher. It has been reported that 70-75% of individuals with substance use disorders are accompanied by at least one psychiatric disorder (2,3). It is also known that substance abuse is more common in psychiatric disorders. In a study conducted in ...

Impulsivity and risk-taking are known to have an important impact on problematic substance use and criminal behavior. This study examined the predictive value of baseline self-report and behavioral impulsivity and risk-taking measures [Delay Discounting Task (DDT), Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART) and Behavioral Inhibition, Behavioral Activation Scale (BIS/BAS)] in 12-months follow-up substance use outcomes (e.g., use of alcohol, cannabis and other substances) and criminal recidivism (yes/no). Participants were 213 male offenders with a substance use disorder (SUD) under probation supervision. Bivariate regression analyses showed that BIS and BAS levels were associated (respectively) with the use of alcohol and cannabis. Multiple regression analysis showed that BIS was negatively associated with alcohol use at follow-up, whereas cannabis use at baseline and BAS predicted cannabis use at follow-up. At a trend level, interactions between delay discounting and risk-taking, and interactions between

The unique effects that drug and alcohol abuse has on gender in Colorado are felt by men even perhaps more than women. The National Institute on Drug Abuse writes that while less than 30 percent of college-aged women reported using marijuana, almost 40 percent of men of college age reported smoking (or otherwise consuming) the drug. Further to that point, the Journal of Adolescent Health found a connection between college-aged men drinking alcohol and abusing prescription drugs while on campus; no such association was found in young women. Similarly, researchers found that for boys, previous substance abuse was connected to an increased likelihood of substance abuse of prescription opioids (painkillers) during young adulthood. For girls, however, only previous marijuana use had any such connection.. ...
Dual Diagnosis of Bipolar and Substance Use Disorders. By Gibson Manick Kistan: CEO of Tranquility Clinic. Substance use disorders (SUD) and mental illnesses have many of the same symptoms. Additionally, having a substance use disorder may predispose someone to develop a mental illness and vice versa. Further, those with BD (Bipolar Disorder) and SUD are at increased risk for non-medical use of prescription opioids.. Drug use and addiction can happen at any time during a persons life. SUD typically starts in adolescence, a period when the first signs of BD commonly appear.. Some research has found that mental illness may precede a substance use disorder, suggesting that better diagnosis of youth BD may help reduce comorbidity. One study found that adolescent-onset BD confers a greater risk of subsequent SUD compared to adult-onset BD. Similarly, other research suggests that youth develop internalising disorders, including depression and anxiety, prior to developing substance use ...
Why Family Support is Critical Drug abuse leads to violence, separation of parents and children, loss of jobs, feelings of hopelessness, serious money problems, single parenthood, anxiety over childcare needs, bad relationships, and emotional and behavioral difficulties in children. Many drug abusers end up in prison or jail. Sometimes they steal property to get money for drugs. Or, often they will commit crimes while high on drugs. Here are some important facts: Most people in State prisons and local jails have abused drugs or alcohol regularly. However, fewer than one-fifth of these offenders received treatment while incarcerated. In 1999, 1.5 million children had a parent in prison. Most of these children (nearly 900,000) were younger than 10 years old. Children with parents who abuse drugs and alcohol are widely considered at high risk for a range of physical and behavioral problems, including substance abuse problems. What Should Families and Offenders Know? Treatment

COLUMBIANA, Ohio (WYTV) - From Columbus to the classroom, Gov. John Kasichs office is talking to schools about its youth drug prevention program.. The program is called Start Talking and doesnt cost schools a penny.. There are three programs in Start Talking: law enforcement is part of the mix, as well as education for parents. As part of Start Talking, police take trips to schools to discuss the dangers of drug use with students, and parents are filled in on the important conversations to have with their kids.. On Monday, local superintendents and principals learned about Start Talking, which has already been implemented in Trumbull County schools. They met at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center to learn more.. One supporter is Columbiana Schools Superintendent Don Mook.. The more messages we can get out to kids and their families, the better we can combat the drug issues on Ohio, and certainly in our school districts, he said.. Choosing a residential treatment center (RTC) for children might be a good idea. This is because many research studies have shown that most people begin abusing drugs and alcohol before their 18th birthday. As a result, it is clear that early detection and rehabilitation of these substance use disorders is essential. In fact, the sooner you are able to get your children the help that they need to overcome their addiction, the easier it will be for them. If your children have been abusing these substances, it is probably because they have been doing so for recreational reasons. However, their drug taking might soon get out of control such that they reach a stage where they are no longer able to control themselves.. Most children will often start using gateway drugs like cannabis and alcohol. over time, however, they will eventually transition to other substances like cocaine and heroin. This is because all of these drugs are easily accessible and often affordable. As you will learn from any ...

For over 30 years, CLFC has been recognized for effective substance abuse prevention. As substance abuse is a well-known and major risk factor for contracting HIV/AIDS, the substantial reduction in use of alcohol and/or other drugs by our participants also reduces their risk of infection with HIV/AIDS.. In addition, two recent COPES projects served similar target populations and implemented a similarly adapted version of CLFC. These projects tracked the number of participants who voluntarily received HIV Testing during the HIV/Hepatitis prevention module. Over the entire 5-year life of both projects, an average of 77% accepted an opportunity for HIV testing and were tested. This high average rate of voluntary HIV testing suggested an increased commitment to health and personal wellness, and a dedication to engage in safe sex practices, all critical components of HIV prevention.. The CLFC Fatherhood Program Impacts Multiple Generations with HIV Prevention Messages. During program session ...

This paper is a discussion of the issues and treatment options for women recovering from substance abuse disorders with a comorbid depressive disorder. A summary of the development of substance abuse, substance abuse treatment, and relapse is given. Gender differences between substance dependent males and females are discussed. The proposed longitudinal study evaluated the efficacy of a residential recovery home in preventing relapse in substance-dependent women diagnosed with a comorbid depressive disorder. Participants (n= 60) included an experimental group of 26 participants and a control group of 34 participants. The experimental group resided in a recovery house for a period of 9 months and underwent a rigorous relapse prevention program. Overall, the women had long histories of substance abuse and relapse. The mean age of the participants was 28.3 years for the experimental group and 26.5 years for the control group. Participants in the control group did not participate in the residential ...
