Occupational therapy students choice of client activities: does patients gender matter?
Aim: In order to achieve a fairer system of health care, it is important that the research and education of health professionals, as well as the organisation of health care, takes into account the gender perspective. The gender order influences womens and mens lifestyles and living conditions and, through this, their health, quality of life and daily activities. The aim of the present study was to explore the perceptions of gender in occupational therapy students in their choice of activities: do students choose activities according to traditional roles? Method: The method was a fictional case study containing 16 activities. Each student was given a copy of one of the versions of the case, Eric or Erica. The students were told to underline the three activities regarded as being of most benefit for the actual patient. Eight male and 99 female students participated. Results: The most chosen activities were cooking, visits to cafeterias and gardening, and the least chosen were spinning, laundry and ...

Immunization attitudes, opinions, and knowledge of healthcare professional students at two Midwestern universities in the...
In addition to administering vaccinations, healthcare professionals (HCPs) also play a crucial role in providing education and advocacy to the public regarding immunizations. Yet, many current and future HCPs are unprepared or reluctant to address the vaccine conversation with hesitant patients. Doctors, pharmacists, and nurses are all recognized as the most trusted sources of vaccine information. By comparing future HCPs in these three distinct programs, we can better understand where potential gaps may lie in their training and education. With insight from students, potential changes to curriculum can improve future HCPs ability to address vaccine hesitancy in their respective careers. The objective of this study was to assess and compare the knowledge, attitudes, and opinions of HCP students on the topic of immunization. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2017 to assess students in nursing, medical, and pharmacy programs at two universities in the state of North Dakota in the United States.

Evaluation of a Bright Futures Oral Health Intervention - Tabular View - ClinicalTrials.gov
Although health professionals must be equipped to promote healthy lifestyles and serve as resources for the publics health information, many gaps in the education and training of residents exist. Health professional students readily admit to deficiencies in their training (i.e. lack of learning principles of prevention, health promotion, behavior change and risk reduction), yet, curricular changes have been slow [1,2]. A 1997 AAMC Medical School Graduation Questionnaire revealed that almost one quarter of graduates felt instruction time devoted to health promotion and disease prevention was inadequate [3, 4, 5, 6]. Mandates for competency-based, post-graduate training by the ACGME Outcomes Project and competency expectations by the AAMC Medical Schools Objectives Project (MSOP) require all residency programs and medical schools to develop innovative approaches to teaching clinical skills.. We believe the resident continuity experience is the perfect venue to implement and practice clinical ...

Gannon University | Gannon University Doctor of Physical Therapy Students Take Inspiring Trip to Valladolid, Mexico
One of my favorite parts of the trip was the opportunity to give out assistive devices to many of the people that came to see us, Longjohn said. This was my favorite part, because so many of these people came in with pain or difficulty moving, and when you give them these devices it significantly improves their quality and ease of movement. It really made me feel that even though we would only be able to treat these people for a single session, we were also giving them tools to use at home to make life just a little easier, Longjohn added. A few lessons that Longjohn was able to take home with her from her trip to Valladolid, Mexico was listening to the patient and treating known injuries. Longjohn and her classmates didnt have the right equipment to diagnose the patients, so they were very dependent on what the patient was saying hurt them. She said she found it is important to educate patients on why they are having pain and what they can do to further reduce it in their everyday lives. ...

Glory Owe. I am a Public Health Science student at the University of Maryland School of Public Health. I am interested in the public health field because I believe health should be analyzed from a holistic perspective in order to improve quality of health for all. After taking MIEH 300 Introduction to Environmental Health with Dr. Payne-Sturges, I wanted to know more about the ways the environment influences our health. With this interest, I am evaluating the effectiveness of a new Maryland the law, the Pollinator Protection Act which passed the Maryland General Assembly in 2016 with bi-partisan support and went into effect on January 1, 2018. This law bans the sale of neonicotinoid insecticide products by home and garden stores. Neonicotinoids are a class of systemic insecticides widely used on food crops globally. Neonicotinoids are chemically similar to the chemical compound nicotine, which binds to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) causing fast excitatory synaptic transmission in the ...
