The aim of the present study was to compare self-reported dental fear among dental students and patients at a School of Dentistry in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Eighty students ranging in age from 20 to 29 years and 80 patients ranging in age from 18 to 65 years participated in the study. A self-administered pre-tested questionnaire consisting of 13 items was used for data acquisition. The city of Belo Horizonte Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) was employed for socioeconomic classification. The chi-square test and binary and multinomial logistic regression were employed in the statistical analysis, with the significance level set at 0.05. The majority of dental students (76.5%) sought the dentist for the first time for a routine exam, while patients (77.3%) mostly sought a dentist for the treatment of dental pain. Dental fear was more prevalent among the patients (72.5%) than the students (27.5%). A total of 47.1% of the students and 52.9% of the patients reported having had negative dental experiences in

Although rates of patient aggression have been estimated for nursing students and medical residents, studies of aggression toward dental students have not been conducted. To begin to address this knowledge gap, we surveyed 160 D.D.S. student dentists in their third- or fourth years who were attending a large urban college of dentistry during the 2018-2019 academic year. Each class had approximately 375 students, leading to a response rate of 21%. Approximately 28% of students reported experiencing at least 1 instance of physical ...

Background: Formative assessment with its feedback component has a powerful effect on students learning. Aim: This research aimed to appraise how teaching and assessment practices were organised in dental undergraduate teaching institutions to inform the development and piloting of a novel peer-assessment protocol for undergraduate dental students pre-clinical competence and clinical performance. Subsequently, the protocols utility as a framework for immediate dialogic peer-feedback to boost students academic learning and achievement outcomes as well as their reflective skills, was evaluated. Materials and methods: An initial review of the literature on peer-assessment together with a scrutiny of the Kings College London Dental Institute undergraduate curriculum and assessment practices of 39 selected international dental teaching institutions was undertaken. This underpinned the development of a novel longitudinal, formative and structured peer-assessment protocol based on traditional ...
The main objective of this present study was taken to determine the knowledge and awareness on diabetic Ketoacidosis among the dental students. This study was a cross-sectional Questionnaire based observational study conducted among dental students from various universities in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It was carried out in December 2016. Study instrument was a self developed, pre-validated, semi-structured questionnaire which consisted of 10 questions and distributed among participants which had both undergraduates and postgraduates, 101 in number between the among group of 18-45. From the study it was concluded that not many students were aware of the basic knowledge regarding diabetes Ketoacidosis, its clinical features and management and they were not able to answer most of the questions. This concludes that more awareness camps were required to spread awareness about Diabetic Ketoacidosis.. ...
Description: This causal-comparative and correlational study examined cross-cultural adaptability of randomly selected licensed dental hygienists, 1995-2005 graduates, practicing in the state of Texas and first and second-year dental hygiene students attending 5 randomly selected accredited 2 and 4-year dental hygiene schools in the state of Texas. A sample of 289 individuals: 194 enrolled students and 95 licensed dental hygienists, alumni of the 5 schools, completed the 50-item Cross-Cultural Adaptability Inventory (CCAI ®) and a brief demographic survey. The purpose of this study was to determine if statistically significant differences existed among and between licensed dental hygienists and first and second-year dental hygiene students in the state of Texas on a cross-cultural adaptability measure. The study also examined relationships among and between cross-cultural adaptability scores, as measured by the CCAI, and several independent variables. The data were analyzed by using the ...
First, we now understand the importance of developing rapport with research participants; therefore, we plan to perform a separate consent and baseline assessment visit in the home setting before the first dental visit. However, although these home visits were helpful in increasing research quality, because of costs home visits may not be a practical strategy to enhance clinical care. Second, the inclusion of Spanish-speaking personnel to ensure parental understanding of the consent process and overall study was critical; it was not needed in the dental clinic because the clinic in which we conducted the study had a large Spanish-speaking population, and bilingual dental staff were part of the team. Third, we plan to reexamine the coding system for the videotaped dental visits. The goal will be to more clearly separate the behaviors that interrupted dental treatment (e.g., screaming, biting) from those that indicated mild patient distress (e.g., grimacing), and identify those that best ...
L-PRF technique is very simple, it acts as a fibrin membrane that accelerates wound healing and provides a significant postoperative protection.[14] It has the advantages of incorporating platelets, leukocytes, cytokines, and circulating stem cells.[15] Cytokines, growth factors such as transforming growth factor-β1 (TGFβ-1), platelet-derived growth factor-AB (PDGF-AB), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and matrix glycoproteins (such as thrombospondin-1) are released over a period of 7 to 11 days, during remodeling of fibrin matrix.[16] L-PRF has been used in periodontal surgery widely to treat gingival recessions and intrabody defects. Several studies compared the use of PRF with other different treatment options. The results showed that PRF enhances GTH and keratinized tissue.[17],[18] A systematic review[19] has been conducted to evaluate the use of PRF in periodontal therapy; it included 49 articles (14 in vitro, 2 animals, 33 clinical studies) and resulted that PRF is considered ...
Objectives: To investigate the quantitative impact of experience on competence in local anesthetic administration amongst final-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) students.. Methods: A Longitudinal cohort study design was employed. Purposive sampling was used to enrol final year BDS students and assess their competence longitudinally over a full academic year. The assessment criteria and scoring structure were reviewed during inspection of the institution by the regulator and the external examiner. Participants were assessed on four occasions, namely, after they had gained experience in performing 15, 40, 70 and 100 patient encounters involving local anesthetic administration.. Results: A total of 177 participants who were assessed including 31 males (18%) and 146 females (82%). Assessment of the participants on four occasions provided a total of 885 data points. A chi-square test was carried out to test the hypothesis. Students in Group 4 with over 100 patient encounters were most likely to ...
This book is directed primarily at undergraduate dental students and the newly-qualified dentist but it will also be of value to medical and dental educationalists. In its concept and content it is closely aligned to recent developments in dental education in the United Kingdom by reference to the General Dental Councils recommendations for the Undergraduate Dental Curriculum and the Quality Assurance Agencys Benchmark Statements for Dentistry.
This book focuses on essentials of physiology for dental students. Physiology is different from other biomedical sciences as it deals with the functional aspects of various systems in the living body along with the emphasis on the regulatory mechanism that maintain the normalcy of the functions within narrow limits. The primary aim of this book is to meet the needs of the dental, paramedical and health science students precisely in the examination point of view, in getting knowledge of recent developments in the field of physiology and in knowing the important applied aspects of various topics. This book covers general physiology, blood and body fluids, muscle physiology, digestive system, renal physiology and skin, endocrinology, reproductive system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system and environmental physiology, nervous system and special senses. In the starting of each chapter, we have included the topics that are to be learnt in that particular chapter which will help the reader to

In this study, we examined the degree of grit and core competency in a group of dental hygiene students and confirmed which factors affected core competency.. The mean score of grit in dental hygiene students who participated in this study was 2.85±0.40. This was lower than the 3.31 points seen in a previous study, using the same tool, on the effect of grit and stress on college life adaptation in third and fourth grade nursing students21). It was also lower than the 3.12 points seen in a study on the effect that grit had on turnover intention in university hospital nurses26). It is difficult to compare the results because there have been no prior studies conducted on dental hygiene students. However, the participants in these studies were 3rd grade, 4th grade, or clinical nurses, which may lower the results. I think these results differ because second-grade students who have not yet experienced clinical practice were included.. Among the sub-factors of grit, the consistency of interest ...

Good news dental students: soon you will no longer have to approach your first victim patient with shaky, unsure hands. Researchers at Showa University in Japan have unveiled a new dental dummy, a realistic robot for dental students to practice on before taking the drill to real, human mouths.. I use the term dummy here loosely. Showa Tanako 2, as the researchers call her, has a wide range of human-like features. She can engage in simple conversations, flinch, roll her eyes, cough, and close her mouth like a real patient suffering from jaw fatigue. Oh, and she has a gag reflex.. So how did a group of dental researchers build such a realistic-albeit slightly scary-looking robot? Naturally, they sought help from Japanese sex doll maker, Orient Industry, who helped fashion the robots skin, tongue, and mouth. If the dolls face didnt look realistic, it wouldnt have the same effect on users psychologically, Showa University professor Koutaro Maki said in the video released by DigInfo. How ...
The level of education and clinical training required to earn a dental degree, and the high academic standards of dental schools, are on par with those of medical schools, and are essential to preparing dentists for the safe and effective practice of modern oral health care.. Most dental students have earned Bachelor of Science Degrees or the equivalent, and all have passed rigorous admissions examinations.. The curricula during the first two years of dental and medical schools are essentially the same - students must complete such biomedical science courses as anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, immunology and pathology. During the second two years, dental students coursework focuses on clinical practice - diagnosing and treating oral diseases. After earning their undergraduate and dental degrees (eight years for most) many dentists continue their education and training to achieve certification in one of nine recognized dental specialties.. Upon completing their training, dentists ...
Methods: An interactive web-based education course for the interpretation of craniofacial CBCT images was recently developed at our institution. Self-evaluation modules on correlative anatomical features were also included to support the learning process. Three e-learner groups were selected to evaluate the effectiveness of the educational modules. The three groups were (1) oral health specialists (OHSs) (comprising periodontologists, prosthodontists, orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons); (2) third grade (DS3) and (3) first grade (DS1) undergraduate dental students. The assessment modules that were part of the interactive web-course content were administered after delivery of the course material. In addition, each group received a computer affinity questionnaire to quantify the extent of knowledge about computers and a perception questionnaire to assess their attitudes toward the web-course ...

The Evans Dental Institute, today known as the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, was founded in 1878 as the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery. After merging with the University of Pennsylvania in 1909, Thomas W. Evans, a prominent dentist to European nobility including Napoleon III, left the school a generous sum of money to construct what would be, at the time, the best equipped dental building in the United States. The Stomatological Society was a professional organization based within the school, active during the middle of the twentieth century, that served to further the knowledge and interests of dentists and dental students. ...

New and improved information technology provision. The official opening of the new facility is taking place this afternoon (Wednesday) and will be presided over by Dr Barry Cockcroft, chief dental officer. Speaking ahead of the event, he said: The development at Bristol Dental School is a key component of the governments £80 million programme for the expansion of dental education. It is the largest project undertaken at an existing dental school and all those involved in planning and construction are to be congratulated for delivering such high-quality facilities on time within cost.. Professor Jonathan Sandy, head of the dental school, added: The newly refurbished dental School will benefit Bristol and much of the South West region. The current pressing shortages in access to dental care in Bristol and the South West are well recognised. It is known that dental students tend to set up in practice close to where they train and, providing the wrinkles in the new contract for general ...

Objective: Identify areas of potential contamination of dental curing lights in a dental school clinical environment in order to optimize disinfection protocols. Method: Specific curing lights (LE Demetron, Kerr) used in dental student clinics were disinfected prior to clinical use. Specific locations of each curing light were swabbed using a sterile cotton tip, and immediately streaked onto blood agar plates. Samples were taken from seven areas on 20 light units: tip, light guide shank, blue-blocker shield, air vents, activation button, unit body, and the battery sides and end. The eighth was the negative control (sterile swab). Biologic growth in these areas represented control values for comparison to samples taken after the lights were used clinically. Students were not informed of the testing. Proper clinical procedure dictated that the student cleaned all surfaces of the curing light with a liquid, cold disinfectant (Dispatch, Clorox) between patients. At the end of the day, the same ...

Downloadable! This paper sheds light on the role of student motivation in the success of schooling. We develop a model in which a teacher engages in the management of student motivation through the choice of the classroom environment. We show that the teacher is able to motivate high-ability students, at least in the short run, by designing a competitive environment. For students with low ability, risk aversion, or when engaged in a long term relationship, the teacher designs a classroom environment that is more focused on mastery and self-referenced standards. In doing so, the teacher helps to develop the intrinsic motivation of students and their capacity to overcome failures.

Abstract:. Background: Researchers have described empathy as a cognitive attribute, which means it predominantly involves understanding another persons concerns. It has also been described as an affective or emotional characteristic, which implies that it primarily involves feeling another persons pain and suffering. Because empathic patient interactions by dentists are associated with improved patient outcomes, self-reported declines in empathy during dental student training are a concern.. Aim: To measure empathy levels among 3rd year, 4th year undergraduate students and interns studying in dental colleges of Bangalore city and to investigate the differences in empathy scores based on gender and year of dental training.. Methodology: A cross sectional descriptive research was undertaken among 800 dental students (3rd year, final year and interns) to measure the empathy levels using Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy-Health Professionals Version (JSPE-HP) questionnaire containing 20 items ...

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the dental students performance in ICDAS (International Caries Detection and Assessment System) coding with different levels of clinical experience. Materials and methods: Dental students (n = 122) in their clinical years, year 3 (n = 37), year 4 (n = 44), and year 5 (n = 41) received training (two-hour introductory lecture on ICDAS, followed by a 90 min e-learning video, and practice sessions using extracted teeth and photographs) from a calibrated expert. After training, the students examined a prevalidated set of extracted teeth and assigned scores in two sessions. The intra- and inter-examiner agreement between students was analyzed using weighted kappa statistics and a focus group discussion was conducted for qualitative feedback. Results: The range of kappa values for intra-examiner agreement among the year 3, 4, and 5 students for ICDAS caries code (0.611-0.879, 0.633-0.848, and 0.645-1.000) and restoration code (0.615-0.942, 0.612-0.923, 0.653-1.000), ...

Undergraduate student groups previously had to register themselves with the OSL each year in order to remain recognized by the College. If groups failed to renew this registration, they would be deemed inactive by administrators and thus ineligible for certain benefits such as Harvard funding and advising resources.. On Sunday night, the Undergraduate Council amended its constitution and bylaws to give itself the responsibility to recommend the creation of student groups. The move marks a major shift in the process by which student groups join the College.. Miller said the data from the audit revealed a significant portion of student groups end up become inactive after launching.. We have seen turnover within the first two years of the groups. We average around 20 to 30 percent of groups going inactive after one to two years, Miller said.. Millers remarks come weeks after a committee to implement penalties on unrecognized social groups recommended that recognized groups should be ...

The once a year student senate elections simply dont provide enough knowledge to represent all students wishes. As issues arise and the student senate and administration makes decisions, it is important we are taking into consideration the interests of all students, not only the 18 voting members of the student senate. The student senate needs to hold bi-weekly polls accessible to the entire student body, and offer designated time slots during each meeting for students to present any input they may have. The student senate should refrain from making any votes until after consideration of all of the feedback to consistently assure we are representing the wishes of the entire population.. Due to social distancing, online classes and limited interaction as a result of the pandemic, mental health is at an all time low. The Universitys focus has been solely on the spread of the virus and they have neglected the importance of focusing on the mental health of students as well. Depression, anxiety ...

In CERPs annual survey of undergraduate students in computing fields, students were asked to identify the resources they are using to fund their education. They could select multiple resources. This graphic shows the distribution of responses for first-generation versus continuing-generation college students. The percentages are the number of students who selected a particular funding source out of the number of students within each group (total first-generation students = 1,076; continuing-generation students = 7,157). Nursing education needs to prepare students for care of dying patients. The aim of this study was to describe the development of nursing students attitudes toward caring for dying patients and their perceived preparedness to perform end-of-life care. A longitudinal study was performed with 117 nursing students at six universities in Sweden. The students completed the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale (FATCOD) questionnaire at the beginning of first and second year, and at the end of third year of education. After education, the students completed questions about how prepared they felt by to perform end-of-life care. The total FATCOD increased from 126 to 132 during education. Five weeks theoretical palliative care education significantly predicted positive changes in attitudes toward caring for dying patients. Students with five weeks theoretical palliative care training felt more prepared and supported by the education to care for a dying patient than students with shorter ...
Art by Samantha Miller After the postponement of spring Student Government Association elections due to COVID-19, Instagram, Twitter and Change.org became platforms for students to voice outrage and disappointment over University decisions this summer.. While the online protests were proof of students taking a stance, few names appeared on this falls SGA ballot, prompting even more complaints. Students who hold opinions but choose not to run for office must acknowledge SGAs role and use the structure to voice their own concerns.. A Call to Action for Students. As elected representation, SGAs initiatives should reflect issues the student population is experiencing. This can only happen if students speak up about their concerns in productive ways.. The SGA constitution states that the organization acts on the directives of students as an intermediary council between students and administration. For SGA to fulfill that role, students need to communicate their concerns.. Considering Seaver ...
Disability insurance is something most dental students, including myself, are not overly concerned about. We have been told that our profession relies on a healthy neck, back, hands, and eyes. But, those horror stories of dentists injuring their backs and being forced into early retirement would never happen to you, right? Personally, I have had my fair share of close calls, but that does not mean I will opt to sit out on the next winter ski trip or fall softball league just to avoid a potential accident. I enjoy seeking lifes thrills, and minor accidents hadnt ever stopped me, until two weeks ago. A minor car accident left me with a broken right wrist, surgery to place pins in my scaphoid, and eight to ten weeks in a cast. In many ways, the accident was lucky. No one was further injured, the break was on my non-dominant hand, and I am only a dental student, meaning there is no major financial loss that practicing dentists would experience. I could steer this conversation towards the ...

Sample sizes for the medical student studies were 1135, 2032 and 2973 for the students in the 1981, 1986 and 1991 cohorts (and these samples consisted of all applicants in the 1981 and 1986 cohorts, and all entrants in the 1991 cohort), and were 330, 376 and 1437 for the final-year students in the 1981, 1986 and 1991 cohort studies. The INDSCAL analyses were restricted to those subjects for whom complete career information was available; this consisted of 538 applicants and 312 final-year students in the 1981 cohort, 1118 applicants and 301 final-year students in the 1986 cohort, and 1638 entrants and 1437 final-year students in the 1991 cohort. See 1 for details of the breakdown of samples by sex and maturity. The stress formula attempts to quantify ...
