IMPORTANT update for gonorrhea treatment - if you get the drip, you need a shot | BuckMD Blog
As if you needed another reason to practice safe sex, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) just updated their guidelines for the treatment of gonorrhea, an sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a bacterium called Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Gonorrhea is one of the most common STIs in the United States and we see it fairly regularly here at the Student Health Center. Gonorrhea is a really smart bug - it has become resistant to every medication weve ever used to treat it so weve had to keep coming up with new options. Until now, weve been able to use oral antibiotic (one you take by mouth) to treat it, but sure enough, recent trends have shown that our latest option, Cefixime (Suprax), is starting to become less effective. So now were literally down to our last shot - an injectable antibiotic called Ceftriaxone (Rocephin). According to the new guidelines, if you get gonorrhea you need to get a single shot of Ceftriaxone PLUS an oral antibiotic, either azithromycin ...

TNT - TRUTH ... not TASERS: Taser policies slow to form on college campuses
The death of an 18-year-old high school graduate after University of Cincinnati police used a Taser on him is likely to reopen an intense debate on whether or how the weapons should be allowed on college campuses. Yet since the last time that debate was had - following high-profile incidents at the University of California at Los Angeles and University of Florida in 2006 and 2007, respectively - it seems that not much has changed.. After investigating the incidents, those two universities, to be sure, revisited their own police department policies regarding how and when Tasers should be used. Both determined their officers acted appropriately, but UCLA issued new guidelines allowing Taser use only on violent subjects, and Florida created a more formal, step-by-step confrontation approach that makes the weapons more of a last resort at public events.. At the macro level, perhaps because the weapons are rarely used, nothing really changed.. Im not sure if its any different, said Anne P. ...

Frequently Asked Questions - Meningitis B - Student Health
Meningococcal disease is a rare but potentially fatal infection caused by the bacteria, Neisseria meningitides. Early symptoms resemble the flu, making diagnosis difficult. When it causes inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, it is called meningococcal meningitis. Meningococcal disease can also cause bloodstream infections. There are several bacterial serogroups or types that cause meningococcal disease, most commonly serogroups A, C, W, Y, and B.. Signs and symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, nausea, vomiting, exhaustion or rash. Early diagnosis and treatment is important because meningococcal disease can be deadly within hours or days of getting sick. It can also lead to severe disabilities, such as loss of limbs.. The bacteria that cause meningococcal disease require prolonged or very close, person to person contact in order to spread. You must be in close contact (e.g., living in close quarters, kissing, etc.) with the persons ...
Statement Regarding the U.S. Supreme Court Ruling in King v. Burwell | University Health
From George B. Hernández Jr., president and CEO of University Health System: Todays Supreme Court decision upholding the availability of subsidies in every U.S. state is a major victory for the people of Bexar County and South Texas. About 94,000 Bexar County residents are among the more than 1 million in Texas who bought health coverage through the federal marketplace. These are our neighbors who are benefiting from access to affordable healthcare services under the Affordable Care Act and who can now rest easier knowing they wont return to the medical and financial uncertainty of the past.. Despite this victory, we cannot forget that many, many of our neighbors remain uninsured. We at University Health System will continue to advocate for a Texas solution that would expand affordable healthcare coverage, as well as access to important preventive healthcare services, to roughly another 100,000 Bexar County residents. These are the most vulnerable low-wage workers in our community who earn ...

3 Steps Could Nearly Eliminate COVID Infections on College Campuses: Study
With no prevention, about three-quarters of students and nearly one in six faculty members would become infected over the semester. Minimal social distancing policies would reduce infections by only 16% in students.. Closing the campus and switching to online-only education would reduce infections by 63% among students, but that would be less effective than keeping the campus open and having a combined mask-wearing and social distancing policy, which would reduce infections by 87% among students, according to the report published online recently in the Annals of Internal Medicine.. While some measures are highly effective, implementing them is entirely up to each colleges financial situation, which may have already become strained because of the pandemic, said study co-senior author Pooyan Kazemian, an assistant professor of operations at Case Western Reserve Universitys School of Management, in Cleveland.. It is clear that two common non-medical strategies are very effective and ...

Factors associated with self-rated health status in university students: a cross-sectional study in three European countries |...
Self-rated health status (SRHS) is a reliable and valid measure for assessing the subjective and objective health of individuals. Previous studies have either focused predominantly on the elderly or investigated only a narrow range of factors potentially associated with SRHS. In examining student populations, these past studies were limited to single countries. The objectives of this study were to assess which candidate variables were independently associated with SRHS in university students, to compare these variables by country and by gender, and to investigate which of the variables was most important as a rating frame for SRHS. The data is from the Cross-National Student Health Survey, conducted in 2005 in universities in Germany, Bulgaria, and Poland (n = 2103; mean age = 20.7 years). SRHS was assessed with a single question using a five-point scale ranging from excellent to poor. The study also measured a wide range of variables including: physical and psychological health, studying, social
